“As long as you are aware of something and maintain that awareness that is meditation”
- Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche
Satipaṭṭhāna is the establishment or arousing of mindfulness, and aims at channelizing varied spectrum of thoughts by making one aware of his existence by using light, water and matter(space). The journey in itself is a cumulative collection of various pause points that unfold as the path untangles.
The Architecture tries to encapsulate and translate the “untangling journey” of the mind and body. The shaft acts as a visual marker that makes one contemplate about what lies under and encourages him to find out ways to reach his destination.
Gateway to nothingness
One encounters the entrance, the only visible spatial entity above ground which directs the user into a subterranean trail that unwinds and culminates at an inner space where he encounters his ultimate destination, a gateway to nothingness. The meditative space then directs the user to the boundless ocean. The cycle is completed, he is reborn. On the contrary, the built landscape focuses on celebrating the ruins, recapturing the essence of the site.
The brief asks for the design of a general specialty hospital, intending to meet the medico socio needs of various communities with different economic status in MIDC patalganga region.
A hospital building differs from other building types with respect to the complex functional relationships that exists between the various parts of the building. Apart from providing the right environment for patients and care providers, it should also be sensitive to the needs of visitors. It is thus imperative to examine the emerging issues, analyze the challenges and acknowledge the emerging trends for designing healthcare spaces.
Ground floor plan
Three arms
This zoning allows us to have three separate arms, between which the functions are divided. This gives us better opportunities for vistas, natural light & ventilation. Every arm consists of a secondary service core with the main core in the center.
Condensed Functions
Here the adjacencies are further placed close to each other, allowing for better efficiency in circulation, the placement of primary and secondary cores remain the same.
Condensed Functions with courtyard
The adjacencies are kept in line to the option 2 but including a courtyard in the middle. This in its primary sense allows natural light and ventilation in the structure, and also saves existing trees.
Final form derivation
A. Stationary building volume with offset.
A B C D E D. Cutting up unnecessary volume for wing division and providing essential connections.
B. Pulling the volume outside for courtyard light and ventilation.
C. Pulling more volume towards south for more shade through out the year.
E. Rotating the north block for more light and openness in courtyard along with integration of roof gardens.
The green open courtyard becomes an essential spill out space, which is placed centrally, accessible to everyone. The volume is stacked up on the south west side, this helps in casting shadow in the courtyard through out the day.
The elevations further accentuate the gradual increase in the architectural massing. Each side exhibits a different volumetric character while the facade remains monotonous.
Section through courtyard
A section cutting through the north and south block show the varied scales of masses which one can encounter in the hospital, this significantly increases its architectural quality.
Section through access bridge
The access bridge provides a vital connection between the IPD wards and staff cores.
