WELLNESS CENTRE

SEMESTER X Nowadays most of us when we look around, we are surrounded by a ‘built environment’ an environment that is made by humans. Most of it is built very few of them are designed. In an environment like this very often we fail to understand the impact of these buildings on our cognition and behavior. All kinds of design elements influence people’s experience and its not just of the environment but also of themselves. A well-designed building with composed ordering systems and patterns, active and engaging materials and Texture and many elements of design have a positive effect on people. They have the power to shape our cognition, emotion and also actions. If a built environment has such potential, could we utilize this to improve ourselves and also in the process improve our society?

Abstract

The site is located in the city of Mysore. Mysore is known for its rich heritage and history. Mysore also has a strong culture rooted in wellness and health, a city known for its Yoga and Ayurvedic centers. The city attracts people from all over the world, and all age groups. Mysore as a city has had an urban growth in the last few years, the city has a dense core with multiple activities such as workspaces, banks, residences, educational institutes, and much more.

The site is located away from the dense urban fabric, towards the foothills of the Chamundi hills. The site is located on Maharana Prathap road, which is one of the main accesses to Chamundi Hills. The main road hosts many vehicular movement, the Maharana Prathap road offers an opportunity for cyclists, walkers and joggers who visit the Chamundi hills.

In this process of questioning, I understood that fields like Psychology, Philosophy and Neuroscience are crucial to my understanding and they are all related to how the user experiences buildings and how they feel in certain spaces. This thesis is a journey of understanding this question and understanding what architecture makes people feel, and whether it could be used as a tool to make people feel a certain way.

Aim of the Thesis

To understand the relationship of the built environment with the body and mind, and to design a wellness institution in which the built actively participates in enhancing the experience of the development of the body and the mind.

The site is located on Maharanaprathap Road which is not a major road, but it connects one from the Highway to Cha mundi Hills. The vehicular movement is limited and provides an oppurtunity for pedestrians and cyclists to use this road.

Main Road Highway Maharanaprathap road

The site area is 62,205 sq.m. The longest side measuring 295 meters, and the shorter side is 210 meters

The site being at the foothills of the mountain experiences both windward and leeward side during the different monsoons. While the prevailing wind direction is in the South West direction, the site is in the leeward side, as a result of which it receives the descending dry air. It is vice versa during the North East monsoon, when the site is in the leeward side of the mountain and receives rising, cool air.

The water from the hills flows through the site and continues to flow out towards the lower region outside the site

The diagram shows the flow of water from the valleys of Chamundi hill, as it enters the site.

The slope on the site is gradual.

The shorter section has a slope of 1:17.5

The longer section has a slope of 1:33.3

The south west monsoon being the prevailing months of monsoon in India, the site is in the leeward side of the hill.

Annual Rainfall in Mysore= 800mm Area of Mysore= 107 sq. Km

Area of Chamundi hills= 8.8 sq. Km

Annual rainfall in Chamundi hills= 65mm RH: 70% during rainy seasons

Distance from the highest point in the hill till the site= 850 meters

Elevation= 210 meters

Slope= 1:4

Contours depicting the slope and the rises of the site.

The South east and the south west halves of the site are higher and slope downwards towards the north western half of the site

Existing vegetation in the site. The north western part of the site in densely vegetated

Existing vegetation and the contours help us understand the drainage pat terns in the site

Identifying the zones suitable for buildings, without disturbing the existing vegetation

Dining and Workshop

Identifying the buildable space to blend with the landscape. Drawing from the context to develop the language, form and the experience of the space.

The paths on either sides of the building make it accessible and also a point of convergence

Situating the building based on the previous studies, making the building a shaded and porous walkway

A sense of flexibility is provided in the act of dining as the user can choose any of the highlighted areas for informal seatings during their meals.

The staircase is designed to be a dynamic space which offers the users the oppurtunity to use the staircase in any way they choose.

18

Physiotherapy space

The physiotherapy space was used by clients who were visiting the wellness centre as individuals. The space was designed to accommodate various therapy rooms where the physiotherapy would take place. The concept was to break the monotony of these spaces and elevate some of the therapy rooms and leaving the rest on the ground. The therapy rooms provide a sense of privacy but still manage to bring in light into these rooms through openings and skylights. The lobby is well lit and kept a double height volume to welcome the cli ents as they enter the space
