Western Music Academy at Auroville Bachelor’s Thesis Project Spaces for music instruction are very different from those of any other institution. The spatial layout of music spaces, coupled with

The Genesis of Form The form for every built form withn the entire academic zone has been derived from a generator grid, which in turn has been derived directly from the geometric requirements for a good acoustic environment.

acoustic considerations inherently give them very different and often very unique geometrical configurations. And when it comes to the design as a whole, the entire ‘environment’ should breathe life into the users, and fuel thier creative spirit. It should allow minds to think freely. And above all, it should inspire. The Academy of Western Music was designed in Auroville as an institute providing diploma and degree level professional training in western music and instruments, having various major and minor courses under its wing. It would teach both Western Classical, as well as more contemporary forms such as Rock, Pop and Jazz. Western classical music deals with the Renaissance and post – Renaissance music of Europe, and covers the Renaissance,

Location of the Site within Auroville The site for the academy lies within the ‘Cultural Zone’ of the township. The cultural zone is designated for the promotion of cultural and artistic expression, education, sport, and the like. acoustically from the open air arena and auditorium of the public performance zone. The residential and public performance zones have been dealt with on a site plan level, while the academic zone has been designed in detail.

The bulk of the academic zone comprises of teaching and practice spaces, including ensemble rooms, recording studios and production labs. The spaces have been grouped into clusters which, along with the landscaping, has been derived from the generator grid. Practice halls form the core of the zone, while lecture halls cater to conventional instruction. The administrative cluster is accessible directly from within, as well as from outside the academic zone.. 7 | Portfolio | Rohit Priyadarshi Sanatani

The Music Clusters As shown in the genesis of form, the music clusters derive strictly from the generator grid, guided by acoustic and functional considerations. This gives rise to a great deal of flexibility to the design, and the design of the clusters can indeed be readily modified. The

The Practice Halls and the Central Plaza The central plaza forms the core of the entire academic zone. Comprising mainly of two practice halls occupying the semi basement below, the raised zone above is designed to serve as a hotspot of interaction as well as informal performance and ‘jamming’. This zone upholds the true ‘sense’ and culture of the entire music academy. The practice halls have been situated within this zone as they belong to the entire academy as a whole, and are meant to serve as a space for all to come together in a formal setup.

TATA Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati | Sem 8 Studio Project A college campus is not merely a centre for learning and academic activity. It a place which concentrates the energy of the youth. A place where young brains think free. A place where minds clash while souls connect. A campus is home to what is known as ‘campus life’. A vibrant atmosphere that serves as a platform for education. education is not just about gaining knowledge in specific fields. Education is learning that teaches us to learn. Upholding this ‘sense’ of an educational campus should, I feel, remain the core objective of any such design. The tata institute of social sciences is one of the premier institutes in it’s field that our country possesses. The core focus of the entire design is a large central courtyard within the main block. This courtyard aims to uphold the whole idea of a vibrant campus life. not only does it serve as a core for the building itself, but also as a core for the entire campus as a whole. The various academic, informal, and administrative functions have been arranged around this core, each possessing smaller courtyards which highlight the hierarchy of space and circulation. the design aims to break away from the ‘single building’ concept, and introduce a complex of spatial systems which interact with each other, thus maintaining their functional relationships. Gandhi Road

The first step was to identify possible alternative spaces which may be utilised for parking these vehicles which remain parked throughout the day. Both the north as well as the south edge of the concerned stretch of Gandhi road is flanked by commercial buildings. The layer of buildings adjacent to the commercial establishments are mostly residential, and accessed from secondary and tertiary streets running parallel to Gandhi road. The Raikhad Urdu School which is no longer in use, is a building which was severely damaged during the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, and now belongs to the Ahmedabad municipal corporation. According to the Manek Chowk Redevelopment Plan, this building is set to be demolished. This disused site has been identified as a possible location for accommodating the vehicles as ‘Pay and Park’. Designed Intervention The broad stand taken during the design process was to dedicate the maximum possible amount of street section to the pedestrian while restricting carriageway. The space earlier occupied by parked vehicles now belonged to shoppers. The informal vendors were streamlined through the design of modular units which included platforms for display as well as spaces for goods storage. Imagining the Westwind at Sanand | Urban Extension Studio The brief for this studio project was to design a future western extension to the city of Ahmedabad, near the town of Sanand. The project was to be implemented as a Town Planning scheme. Extensive site surveys and door to door interviews were carried out to gather enough data pertaining to demographics, travel patterns and the like. The site itself was acted upon by two strong forces - the force of industrial developments to the west, and the force of urban sprawl and real estate demand due to Ahmedabad to the east. The proposed Delhi - Mumbai Dedicated Freight Corridor also ran through the site.

The Serampore Initiative | CEPT Winter School 2016 The Shabari in Serampore, West Bengal is a gem of the former Danish colony’s architectural heritage. Over the past few decades, it has fallen into despair and is in urgent need for conservation. This project was initiated by the National Museum of Denmark, and involved extensive documentation of the structures, dialogues with all concerned stakeholders, and the preparation of a comprehensive conservation strategy. The site presents immense potential as a large community space that can be rented out for large gatherings such as marriages. The outcome of this project was presented as a public exhibition at the Government House at Serampore.
