“Pinging Up� Alabama’s 13th National Championship E\ $ODQ %UXPEHORH So what does Ping Pong have to do with the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 13th national championship? We will answer that question in just a moment. First, however, let me offer a brief introduction to National Senior Olympian Table Tennis Gold Medalist, Homer Brown. You’ve no doubt seen, played in, or at least heard of Homer’s Bumper Nets retail store and entertainment venue for family fun in the Riverchase Galleria mall, but what you may not know about Homer is his illustrious background of achievements served up by life’s multi-sided paddle. Within the world of table tennis, Homer holds the World Record for the most appearances in the Table Tennis U.S. Open, having competed 41 times in the coveted tournament. While Homer Brown may have gotten off to a late college start playing table tennis, he would ultimately take his place in modern history as one of the greats to ever play the sport and continues to do so today; but his spirited endeavors have included more than table tennis; Homer has achieved the pinnacle of success in other arenas.

So, what DOES Table Tennis have to do with the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 13th national championship? Just ask the University of Texas after being routed by the Crimson Tide’s unstoppable offense and virtually impeccable defense, as the Tide showed-off some pretty keen & mean eye-hand-coordination skills in their 37-21 national championship victory back in January. So, from where did all of that great eye-hand coordination emanate? Well, maybe at least in part from Birmingham Senior Olympian Gold Medalist, Homer Brown. Over the Summer of 2009, Homer was asked to put on a Table Tennis clinic in Tuscaloosa with the Crimson Tide Football team for fun and to help build eye-hand coordination. Speaking about the clinic, Homer said the Tide football team has some very talented table-tennis players; and certainly, in the end, the results of the two-part Summer clinic became evident for all to see with their 13th national championship. On your next trip to the Galleria, stop by Bumper Nets and see the action pictures proudly posted of the Tide showing off their eye-hand coordination and table-tennis skills, honed to near perfection by national senior Olympic Champion, Homer Brown. As Homer says, “You may never win a national championship in Football, but anyone can play table tennis and have fun at any age and play for a lifetime.”

For most of his life before Bumper Nets, Homer was in the oil business. After successfully managing two service stations and saving his earnings, Homer became the youngest person in America to own and run a Gulf service station at the age of 21. He went on to work for BP Oil for 23 years in marketing and retail training, and eventually achieved his final goal in the oil business of actually running an oil company. All along he kept his table-tennis dreams at the forefront, coaching his son, Adam, to a National Championship for ten-and-under at age eight in 1989 and present-day to five state men’s singles championships! In 1996, Homer became the COO of Vulcan Oil before resigning in 1998 to pursue his dream of somehow sharing his love for the sport of Table Tennis. Tearing a page from his life in retail experience in the oil industry, Homer opened the country’s first table-tennis retail store in August of 1999. The store is altogether interactive with multiple open-court table-tennis play, robot table tennis, large arcade with regular pinball tournaments, pool tournaments, and not to mention table-tennis tournaments. Customers can purchase a wide variety of gaming equipment, rent game tables, or take lessons from true professionals.

In 2008, Bumper Nets was honored by The Alabama Retail Association (ARA) and UAB as Retailer of the Year. The President of the ARA, Mr. Rick Brown, stated that Bumper Nets is more than a retail establishment; it is a destination and an experience. Customers can play games, take lessons with a professional or play in tournaments right inside the same store, where they can buy pool tables & equipment, table tennis, air hockey, foosball, shuffleboard, or other game accessories. There is a table-tennis tournament every Friday night and a pool tournament every Thursday night. For tons of family fun, visit Homer Brown and his son, 5-time Alabama state men’s singles Champion, and Store Manager, Adam Brown, at Bumper Nets in The Galleria Mall, lower level by Sears. Also, Homer has a vision to see table tennis make its way into the schools as an approved team sport. Shrimp and Grits – serves 4

,ȨÉœČƒČŁČ?Č˝ Grits 1 – Cup heavy cream 2 – Cups water 1 ½ – Cups chicken stock Âź – Cup butter 1 – Cup stone-ground grits – Salt and pepper to taste In a large sauce pan over medium high heat, combine cream, water, stock; bring to a gentle boil. Add butter, salt and pepper. Slowly add grits, stirring so grits don’t settle to the bottom and scorch. Reduce heat to medium low. Cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until grits are tender.

At Dale’s we are always looking to ďŹ nd and try authentic southern recipes, staying true to our concept. This recipe came from Charleston, SC, where they call it “breakfast shrimp.â€? We make this dish in two partsâ€ŚďŹ rst we get our grits going and almost done then we begin cooking our shrimp, so we can serve the hot shrimp over the prepared grits. This recipe is very easy and prepares fast‌you can be enjoying it in less than 30 minutes.

Shrimp 1 lb – Large to jumbo shrimp (peeled and deveined) 26/30 is a good size for this recipe

2 tbsp – Fresh lemon juice – Salt and cayenne pepper to taste Ÿ – Cup liquid margarine 4 – Slices bacon

1 – Small onion 1 – Clove garlic, minced www.Da Âź – Cup red tomato lesGrill .com Âź – Cup green tomato ½ tsp – Black pepper 1 – Cup smoked Gouda cheese – Shredded green onions

In a bowl, season shrimp with lemon juice, salt and cayenne pepper, liquid margarine. Let this marinate in your refrigerator for about an hour. Cook the bacon pretty crispy, remove bacon, pat dry with paper towel, set aside. Coarsely chop bacon when cool. Save 4 tablespoons of bacon grease in sauce pan. Add onions, garlic, black pepper and sautÊ for a few minutes, add shrimp mixture and bacon; sautÊ for about 5 more minutes or until shrimp are opaque in the center— add both tomatoes and cook for another minute. Remove from heat.

To serve Spoon hot grits on plate, sprinkle Gouda cheese over grits, place shrimp mixture on top of grits—top with green onions‌.
