Thieves hit second NSR gear cache Emergency supplies stolen, trashed in second raid BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

For the second time in a week, the North Shore Rescue team has learned one of its backcountry emergency caches has been raided by thieves. North Shore Rescue’s Hanes Valley cache was broken into and nearby helicopter pad vandalized beyond repair sometime in the last week. “Another one. We learned late (Thursday) afternoon,” said Doug Pope, North Shore Rescue search manager. “It’s very similar to what happened at Hanes Valley. It looks

like, very likely, the same individuals, the way it was carried out.” It appeared the thieves used a nearby rock to break the lock and then made off with tents, sleeping bags, Thermarests, ropes, gas stoves, first aid equipment and tools, this time from a cache near Norvan Falls, about 6.5 kilometres north of the Lynn Headwaters Regional Park parking lot. In this case though, the thieves did not use a chainsaw to destroy the nearby helipad. It’s possible both caches were ransacked on the same day as they are part of the same trail system, but the one at Norvan Falls wouldn’t be visible to hikers who were sticking to the trail, Pope said. “This one’s closer to civilization and a more travelled route but it’s offtrail,” Pope said. “Someone See Cache page 5

District of North Vancouver firefighters had a busy day Thursday, responding to three fires, two of which have left families out of home. The uncommonly flammable day started just after 5 a.m. when a garage fire broke out in a home in the 2800-block of Wembley Drive in Lynn Valley.

The homeowner woke up to the smell of smoke and alerted his family members. The garage was damaged beyond repair and smoke seeped into much of the rest of the house. Investigators are still working to determine if the home is structurally safe and what may have caused the fire. “It’s probably not a bad idea, See Smoke page 8

Cache was off the trail, says team From page 1 has done some research to find out where they are. Other than that, we don’t have a real idea who would stoop so low as to vandalize and steal rescue equipment.” Pope said the team has since checked on all of their remaining five caches and all of them are secure. Both caches have been used by North Shore Rescue volunteers to help keep rescuers and lost hikers alive overnight while bad weather made it too hard to get out, Pope said. The caches were an initiative of Metro Vancouver and Tim Jones, North Shore Rescue’s former team leader who died in January. “It was that kind of scenario that Tim prepared our team for and now we’ve come to rely on these as a key part of our safety net. We need this equipment badly and we’re going to have to find a way to replace it quickly,” he said. “We’re thinking the two together are up above

$20,000 in damage that we’re facing now.” The team has been met with a show of support from the community since the thefts. Just hours after news of the second cache theft broke, Clint Mahlman, executive vice-president of London Drugs, put a message on social media that the company would be donating $10,000 to help replace the stolen and damaged gear. In a post on the company website, officials said that when they learned about the vital equipment “being stolen from this volunteer group that does so much good for hundreds of people year round, we knew we had to help.” North Vancouver RCMP investigators have collected evidence from both sites and are asking anyone who may have information to come forward. Most of the stolen gear is marked with North Shore Rescue’s logo. The team is still taking donations at northshorerescue.com.

Lower than low

W

e’ve printed more than a few stories about senseless acts in the North Shore News. Such are the frailties of human nature. But the news this week that someone has stolen and vandalized gear from life-saving North Shore Rescue caches — not once, but twice — truly boggles the mind. We can’t really imagine who would stoop to such a low.The level of stupidity involved and disregard for other people’s lives is colossal. Disturbingly, it must have taken someone a fair amount of effort to pull off this stunt. The emergency caches are by their very nature located in some of the North Shore’s most remote backcountry, hours of hiking from anywhere else. They are placed there so that potentially life-saving gear will be available when conditions are dire enough that both those

MAILBOX

needing rescue and those rescuing them can’t make it out. The caches are a key part of what our volunteer searchers rely on when they head out in dangerous conditions. They are one of the legacies of the late team leader Tim Jones, who we’re sure would be using some choice words to describe the culprits. It’s almost beyond comprehension that someone would target the caches to outfit themselves with some new camping gear. Even more reprehensible is the damage these lowlifes did to the equipment they didn’t steal — including a helicopterlanding pad. North Shore Rescue now has to spend more of its precious resources and those of its donors to replace the gear. Those who trekked so far into the mountains to cause such destruction must know that they themselves could easily become victims of their own folly.

Shout from the rooftops this Canada Day Dear Editor: Re: One Class Only, June 25. Your editorial is alarmingly prescient as Bill C-24 speaks of a future when, in Canada, many thousands of “citizens” will live with a very uncertain definition of what it means

to be Canadian and will, perhaps, be somewhat muted in their celebration on this particular Canada Day. In the name of a socalled security threat from within the country, the Conservative government has greatly diminished the

significance of the Oath of Citizenship made by millions of immigrants to this country. The oath is simple and profound and reads: I swear (or affirm) That I will be faithful And bear true allegiance To Her Majesty Queen

Elizabeth the Second Queen of Canada Her Heirs and Successors And that I will faithfully observe The laws of Canada And fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. What else can one do or one say that sets

in concrete, not in sand, the unassailable fact of citizenship? What you have so eloquently said in your editorial, I will shout from the rooftop on this Canada Day, namely: “One class only.” Don Robertson North Vancouver

Call before you dig — but don’t expect much help Dear Editor: The article in the North Shore News on contacting BC One Call to locate utilities before you dig, and on digging practices, is helpful but misses a key point. Apparently unlike all other provinces, in B.C. no legislation exists to require

B.C. utilities to do an onsite locate of the various utilities. They will send you a map.The one we got was over 28 years old, and the neighbourhood has changed. It was too vague to be of any use. When we asked Fortis if they would attend and do an on-site locate, even for

CONTACTUS

money, they refused. They told us Telus and BC Hydro are the same.We would have to hire a private contractor for $250 to $300. Do they really wonder why people still dig without positive locates and do damage? BC One Call confirmed that there is no legislation in B.C. requiring utilities

to do an on-site locate and that the utilities do not do them. They are only required to have a positive response to a locate request and apparently the 28-year-old map Fortis sent me fulfills that requirement. BC One Call confirmed that B.C. is the only province that takes this approach, but

thought that companies with high pressure lines will do physical locates. In Aurora, Ontario, when my son wanted a locate to install a basketball net, a technician was there the next day and located all the utilities except cable TV (or See Quicker page 10

VIEWPOINT

Kids, soccer stars share bad taste One of my kids dabbled in biting for a few weeks. Of course, he was a little toddler, not one of the 20 most talented soccer players in the world. I don’t mean to sell my son short — he may have been one of the 20 best toddler soccer players in the world at the time he went through his biting phase. I mean, he could do this pretty cool thing where he’d pick up a ball and drop kick it pretty high, like, almost over a very small fence. But it wasn’t even a real soccer ball, just one of those superlight plastic jobs. And other parts of his game were sorely lacking. His headers were just crap, and don’t even get me started on his trouble with the offside trap. I don’t think he even understood the rule! Once again though, he was just two years old. Luis Suarez, on the other hand, is a grown up man with intricate knowledge of the offside rule and a remarkable knack for scoring goals. In 2013 he finished 19th in FIFA’s Player of theYear voting, and his performances this year had some people suggesting that he could shoot into the top three for 2014, maybe even up to No. 1. He scored 31 goals in 33 British Premier League games this season with Liverpool to win the Golden Boot as well as the league’s Player of theYear award. So yeah, he’s better at soccer at age 27 than my kid was at age two. But get this — he also bites people. As you probably know, Suarez, playing for Uruguay in the World Cup on Tuesday, inexplicably bit Italian Giorgio Chiellini

Andy Prest

Laugh All YouWant on the shoulder during an otherwise benign play. To mark this bizarre occasion I’ve carried on the World Cup tradition of writing a terrible song that will be sung by someone famous who is wearing really short pants. Here it is, sung to the tune of the smash 1963 hit “Then He Kissed Me” performed by The Crystals: He walked up to me and he asked me if I wanted to play He played for the two-time world champions from Uruguay When he played, he was a sight And when he shot, he scored all night So I tried to defend him tight And then he bit me. And then he bit me. Amazingly it’s not the first time he’s taken a bite out of someone in a game. He’s done it three times now in the last four years. He just doesn’t seem to grasp that the rest of the world finds human-on-human biting to be (bad pun alert! bad pun alert!) in very bad taste. I want to help Luis Suarez. Biting is not a good thing to do — apparently the human mouth is full of more questionable toxins than the

pool at the Playboy Mansion. And this isn’t helping his career either. On Thursday FIFA banned Suarez from all soccer for the next four months as well as Uruguay’s next nine matches. Parenting books tell you that many kids go through a biting phase between the ages of one and three. The best thing to do, they tell you, is simply, clearly and sternly say to the child: “No, please don’t bite. It hurts.” I’m guessing that’s what the referee, practicing good parenting, did with Suarez, because he didn’t offer any more traditional punishments such as a red card. It’s also important to reduce the likelihood of an angry biting encounter by ensuring that the child gets enough sleep and — this one comes from The Book Of Obvious — gets enough to eat. Those things didn’t work right away on my kid, who was too young to realize that the biting inflicted real pain. What ultimately got him to stop was when he bit someone he truly respected. Not his mom or dad, of course, but his beloved Grampa. Grampa and my son were wrestling around one day when the little guy got caught up in the fun and bit down on the back of Grampa’s leg. “Ow! He bit me!” Grampa understandably said in a slightly shocked tone. Seeing his Grampa react like that really freaked out my son and he has never bitten anyone since. Recalling that incident has helped me make my plan for Suarez. All we

have to do is to trick him into biting someone that he really respects — a beloved Grampa or uncle or maybe one of his sponsors from Cannibal’s Anonymous — and he’ll learn how

much pain he’s causing. It shouldn’t be that hard to set up — all we’d need to do is to tell the person to innocuously come in contact with Suarez during a soccer game and voila

Smoke alarms good in garage From page 1

especially if your garage is being used for storage, to have smoke alarms in your garage as well and keep any storage space neat and tidy,” said assistant fire chief Mike Cairns. Just before 7 p.m., crews were again called to Upper Lynn Valley after a steel container full of demolition waste from a housing renovation on Underwood Avenue caught fire. Crews hit the flames with hoses and prevented the fire from spreading to the home under renovation. The cause will likely go down as unknown, Cairns said. “There’s a whole bunch of things in there so it’s hard to determine,” he said. Less than an hour later, the trucks were rolling again, this time to the 5600-block of Covey Place in the Grousewoods neighbourhood, where a fire on a second-floor deck had spread to the top floor and roof of a home. One of the upstairs residents tried to

put out the fire with a small extinguisher while multiple neighbours called 9-1-1. “(The damage) is substantial. The top floor is heavily damaged by fire. The roof is damaged by fire. And the main floor and basement suite had a lot of water damage,” Cairns said. The fire appears to have started on a couch on the deck and investigators are looking into whether some nearby candles may have started the fire. In all, the home had seven residents in two suites. The families are insured but they will be displaced for “quite a few months” Cairns said. No one was injured in any of the blazes. While it’s not uncommon for district fire crews to be called out for several emergencies in a day, it’s not typical for so many to be fire-related. “It has happened but it’s pretty rare when we get three fires in one day, and two were pretty substantial,” Cairns said.

Bear lured to minivan by smell of spilled milk JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com

Got milk? That may have been what one bear wanted to know when he ripped a minivan apart like a tin can while searching for food early Thursday morning. West Vancouver police attended the 500 block of St. Andrews Place at 4 a.m. after a homeowner heard her vehicle alarm blaring and noted her front passenger door ajar. Attending officers estimated the bruin’s rampage caused $3,000 damage to the minivan. The bear may have been lured by spilled milk,

according to police. The car had been thoroughly cleaned since the spill, but the scent may still have been strong enough to entice the fourlegged forager, according to police. Birdfeeders, dog food and barbecues are some of the usual suspects when it comes to bear attractants, according to Tony Webb chairman of the North Shore Black Bear Network, who has continually advised North Shore residents about the power of a bear’s olfactory system. Authorities are advising residents to take note of all possible attractants and to be on the lookout for a bear with a white mustache.

Trendy pub chain coming to waterfront Tap & Barrel to open in Shipyards Coppersmith Shop

BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

The City of North Vancouver has named a trendy Vancouver restaurant and pub chain as the anchor tenant in the Shipyards’ Coppersmith Shop at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue. Tap & Barrel, which already has locations in the Olympic Village and Coal Harbour, is now negotiating a lease with the city with an aim to start construction this summer. The pub hopes to open for customers in time for summer 2015. The restaurant and pub will occupy the entire building as well as a large patio area facing Shipbuilders’ Square — a key part of the redeveloped central waterfront the city is working on. The details of the lease are still being negotiated so the city cannot release what Tap & Barrel will be paying,

The city hired Colliers International to market the 8,500-square-foot historic building, netting a number of potential tenants. From the short-list of three, the city ranked candidates based on quality of their proposals. Some of the key elements of Tap & Barrel’s

Transit authorities, represented by the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority and the Coast Mountain Bus Co., argued in court that they shouldn’t be held responsible, saying there was no direct evidence of negligence and it was only speculation that the bus driver was travelling too fast. But the judge disagreed, saying drivers must make sure there is enough distance between their vehicle and those in front so they can stop if something unexpected happens. That’s even more true for bus drivers, especially on a bus that included people standing and at least one stroller, Davies noted. Davies added the bus driver knew he was following an erratic driver, but didn’t slow down soon enough. The award of just under $353,000 includes $94,000 for lost wages and $120,000 for loss of future earning capacity as well as payments for past and future medical expenses.

Parking problems plague Panorama Residents of Deep Cove, Indian Arm vie for spots JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com

Just like lack of love can divide a family, lack of parking is dividing a North Vancouver community as Panorama Drive residents and the folks who live across the water jockey for spots. The growing popularity of the Baden Powell Trail brought an increase of cars to Deep Cove, turning Panorama Drive into a safety hazard for emergency vehicles in the summer of 2013. The traffic also precluded some residents from entertaining company, because visitors had nowhere to park. “If we do not have visitors parking, we’re isolated,” said John Paul Stevenson, who advocated for residents-only parking at a council meeting this spring. Council moved

While residents-only parking signs were a boon to Panorama Drive

residents with no offroad parking, they were a boondoggle for Indian Arm residents who access their homes by boat. Nearly 70 per cent of Panorama Drive residents responding to a district

survey voted for residentsonly parking. However, Indian Arm residents — including those with Panorama Drive mailing addresses — complained of not getting that survey. “We were not included

in the initial survey which suggests either an oversight or that DNV staff do not believe we are residents of Panorama Drive,” said Jeff Boniface, speaking to council at a June 9 meeting. The District of North Vancouver recently decided to include Indian Arm residents in the residentsonly parking trial period, but that may not solve the problem because of lack of space on the road. “We do not have the physical capacity to accommodate all of the vehicles belonging to Panorama Drive homes and Indian Arm homes,” district spokeswoman Jeanine Bratina wrote in an email. Following the trial period, the district is slated to develop a parking and traffic strategy for the neighbourhood. While the new regulations may not solve every problem, they have cut down on the number of hikers parking on the block, according to Indian Arm resident Phil Mowatt. “Since the signs have gone in, it’s amazing how much the parking has improved,” Mowatt said.

Longtime Indian Arm residents have watched parking spots disappear in recent years, according to Mowatt. “When we moved up there, there were two lots of parking, parking at the marina, and we were allowed to park on Panorama,” Mowatt said. Space has dwindled in the increasingly expensive marina, leaving many boaters parking their secondary vehicles on Panorama Drive, according to Mowatt. Mowatt said he’s sympathetic to gridlock concerns, but wants to be sure Indian Arm residents get the same treatment as Panorama Drive’s denizens. “Indian Arm residents don’t get garbage collection and we don’t need new streetlights and we don’t need signs and we don’t complain about laneways. We really look after ourselves,” he said. The issue is unlikely to go away any time soon, according to Coun. Lisa Muri, who spoke about the problem in April. “The Cove is never going to have sufficient parking, ever. It’s the end of the road,” she said.

An exhibition opening Friday at WestVancouver’s Ferry Building Gallery is turning an artistic eye to the topic of dementia. A Celebration of Creativity features mixed media highlights from The Society for the Arts in Dementia Care’s permanent art collection, created by older people and by people living with dementia, collected over time from around the world. The exhibition was organized by Dalia GottliebTanaka, founder and chairwoman of the society, a partner with the gallery for the initiative. The Society for the Arts in Dementia Care hosts conferences on creative expression, communication and dementia, and workshops on creativity, aging, memory and health. The society also engages on an international level as part of its focus on improving the quality of life of older adults and seniors living with dementia,

So to see any artwork, expression on paper or singing or moving in a dance, was fantastic. That meant to me the person is still capable and wants to stay in contact with others and express themselves,” says Gottlieb-Tanaka, who splits her time between North Vancouver and Vernon. Living on the North Shore is like having the perfect first date over and over again. Just when you think you are really getting to know it you discover another amazing aspect that makes you want to find out even more.

PHOTO: CINDY GOODMAN

There is no limit to the recreation options here. If you want to go for a walk you can enjoy a casual stroll along the waterfront while sipping on your fresh latte, or you can venture up nature’s Stairmaster and climb the Grouse Grind. In between those two extremes are a wealth of other choices. In many of these same locations you can bike or run.

“Living on the North Shore is like having the perfect first date over and over again.”

If you’ve worked up a sweat you can cool off with a swim in one of the local swimming pools, plunge in the ocean at a gorgeous beach, or find an even more invigorating swim in one of our mountainfed rivers. In the winter we have three ski resorts to choose from, all offering various snow activities from downhill skiing to snowshoeing.

But the North Shore is much more than just a recreation haven. Fantastic restaurants of many types of cuisine are here to tantalize your palate. Shopping choices are everywhere with several large retail centres plus an abundance of unique boutique stores. And when it’s finally time to go home there are choices galore for where you might choose to live. From apartment living complete with incredible views to modern townhomes and detached houses of every size. No matter what type of accommodation you choose when you get home you’ll know that if you’re on the North Shore then you made the right choice.

POCKETKNIFE Although a multitool is preferred, a good pocketknife with a quality blade will suffice. It may also be worth carrying a small pruning saw for cutting branches when building a shelter or fire. SHELTER Large orange plastic bag and thermal tarp.

LOCALS’ GUIDE TO NORTH SHORE RIDES APP This guide presents two locals’ perspectives on the North Shore trail network, and makes an effort to describe a wide range of trails that can accommodate all skill levels. App features include: Rider’s location on maps, trail descriptions, ratings, and lengths, recommended ride descriptions, profiles, route overlays, and an overview map of the North Shore, which includes hiking trails.

WATER Drink one-two litres before your hike and carry one-two litres with you.

RED CROSS FIRST-AID APP The official Canadian Red Cross First Aid app puts lifesaving advice in your hands. The app features videos, interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice to help you maintain life-saving skills and respond when needed for everyday emergencies. SAFE BOATING BY THE ROYAL CANADIAN MARINE SEARCH AND RESCUE APP This app features links to useful voyage planning resources such as tidal, wind, weather and fishing information. Transport Canada required safety equipment and navigation light requirements are also included. Run through the useful checklists with your crew as well as review suggestions for recommended equipment.

When visiting local trails, even the best weather can change rapidly. Always tell a reliable person where you are going and when to expect you back. North Shore Rescue also recommends taking the following 10 essentials:

SIGNALLING DEVICE Whistle (NSR recommends the Fox 40 whistle with a lanyard), bear bangers, pencil flare.

LIGHT Flashlight or a headlamp with extra batteries (and light bulb if not LED). Green cyalume stick or small turtle lights as emergency backup.

EXTRA CLOTHES Hat or toque, gloves or mittens, fleece jacket, Gortex jacket, polypro underwear, good quality hiking socks and Gortex over-pants.

FIRESTARTER Matches (waterproof or in a plastic bag) or lighter. NSR also recommends a commercial firestarter and/or a candle.

FIRST-AID KIT Should include pocket mask; Sam Splint, bulk dressings, protective gloves, bandage, scissors and blister dressings. NAVIGATION Good-quality compass with builtin declination adjustment and both topographical and interpretive maps. NSR also recommends a GPS unit but only as an adjunct to compass and map. COMMUNICATIONS – CELLPHONE NSR recommends you bring a cellphone with a fully charged battery. It is advisable to keep the phone turned off and stored in a sealable plastic bag to help keep the phone dry and fully charged. Many people manage to call 911 initially but their phone dies before their location can be relayed, which is not a desirable situation. If you have a smartphone, you should also know how to get GPS coordinates off of it to give to search and rescue if you become lost or injured. SOURCE: NORTHSHORERESCUE.COM

What is your favourite NS secret? It’s nice because it’s a different perspective of Vancouver. It feels like a little getaway — like an island oasis.

I love to bike and hike here on the North Shore. Typically I go up Cypress or out to Horseshoe Bay. The best time is really in the morning, it’s quiet and peaceful. I Love being in the Mount Seymour Backcountry as it is only a quick drive to the mountain but once you’re there, it feels a world away. Skiing has always been a huge part of my life as an anchor and outlet for an active lifestyle, my love of the outdoors and creative expression.

For me, it comes down to one thing — the sense of community. People here pitch in to make the North Shore a great place to both live and work. Whether it’s the area’s large companies, our small business owners, community service organizations or local residents, I see community spirit everywhere.

It’s an amazingly diverse population, tolerantly living together and united by a common love for the North Shore utopian lifestyle of skis, trees and seas.

What is your favourite NS secret? I love living and working on North Shore because we are all tied together here by the energy of the Capilano River, and bookended so nicely by the unique character of an early morning Indian Arm sunrise and a glorious evening Howe Sound sunset. The North Shore is the best place to work and play, not to mention all the activities you can do — Lynn Canyon, the Grouse Grind. It just seems to have something for everyone.

Working and living on the North Shore are rewarding experiences. There is sense of pride and commitment in the business community that goes beyond the notion of just a “ job” and the same can be said about living on the North Shore. The North Shore is a great community to live and work, where business relationships become friendships and friendships lead to business opportunities.

Larry’s River native makes his mark

From N.S. to the North Shore, adventurer goes the distance Elmer Pellerine is a relative newcomer to the North Shore but his family has been in Canada for a very long time. The Pellerine name, in its many variations, shows up in the historic record as early as 1617. In those days, before there was Canada, there was New France. The French claim to most of North America included the territory that is now Canada’s Maritime provinces, which the French named l’Acadie or Acadia. Acadian culture lives on in communities throughout the Maritimes. One of these is Larry’s River, a hamlet on Nova Scotia’s northeast shore. On Jan. 3, 1942, the population of Larry’s River, then at its peak of 500 souls, increased by one with Elmer’s birth. “It was pretty insular,” recalls Elmer. “Everyone got along very well and everyone spoke French. My mother was an Avery. Her family came from Wales. She never spoke anything but French.” Making a living in Larry’s River was determined by the climate. His father would be away most of the summer, a deckhand on the government hydrographic survey boats. Elmer’s

mother cared for the children and worked in the local factory, a lobster cannery. It was, and is, a close-knit community, selfreliant and reliant also on the support of neighbours and family, especially when raising eight children. Like his brothers, Elmer enlisted in the Canadian armed services in his early 20s.When his hopes to train as an air force pilot did not come about, Elmer made his way west and trained as a teacher at the University of British Columbia. He taught French in the Castlegar school district, driving from one elementary school to the next. “It was a good time to be a teacher,” says Elmer, “when language education was introduced in elementary schools.” In 1980, he married Veronica Bullock, blending four children into a new family that now includes nine grandchildren. For the Pellerine family, life in the Kootenays was good, Castlegar was booming and building a new house led to an entrepreneurial opportunity. “We had designed our house together,” says Elmer, “and we enjoyed the whole process so much, from design to building, that we looked around for another project.”They created the Lion’s Head Pub in the

mountains near Castlegar and operated it for more than 16 years. The inspiration for Elmer’s next adventure had gestated for approximately 40 years. “I decided to get my pilot’s license. It was a great experience to be learning something new at the age of 64.” Piloting a small aircraft in the mountains of British Columbia is not for the faint of heart but for Elmer, the challenges he faced were part of the joy of flight. “I liked to dangle that little airplane around the mountains and the clouds, then return and land safely. While flying, I learned how to handle potential catastrophes. All of a sudden, you’ve got to be really disciplined and rely on your skills. Coming out of such situations is just absolutely the thrill of a lifetime,” he says. Antarctica is next on Elmer’s bucket list. A dip in the icy waters of that continent will complete his

A few years ago, he and Veronica drove the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, on the shores of the Beaufort Sea. “I came prepared with a bathing suit but was not prepared for how cold the Arctic Ocean would be,

Age-defying WV track athlete dies at 95

JOHN MACKIE Contributing writer

West Vancouver’s Olga Kotelko didn’t take up competitive track and field until she was 77 years old. But she made up for lost time. Kotelko would set 30 world records for her “masters” age group in the 100- and 200-metre sprint, long jump, high jump, and hammer. She earned more than 750 gold medals. She was such a marvel

that Vancouver writer Bruce Grierson made her the subject of a book, What Makes Olga Run? Her feats gave her international renown — Grierson profiled her in the NewYork Times, and the BBC in London recently did a story. Kotelko died Tuesday after suffering a brain hemorrhage at her home. She was 95 years old. Kotelko was only five feet tall, and weighed about 125 pounds. But she was strong, determined, and

had a lot of spirit. “She was really something,” said Grierson. “Anatomically she was really remarkable,” he said, which was why scientists wondered about what might be going on inside her body to defy the usual effects of age. “There was something about her spirit, also, that was really infectious,” Grierson said. “She was super optimistic, and always found a way to be enjoying herself.”

Kotelko was one of 11 children born to Ukrainian immigrants in Vonar, Sask., near Saskatoon. She grew

Kotelko maintained an intense training regimen From page 19 up on a farm, where she formed a lifelong habit of eating right and staying in shape. She married, had a daughter and became a teacher at Vonar’s one-

room school. But she left Saskatchewan after her drunken husband held a knife to her throat. “She hopped on the train in the night. She was actually pregnant with one of her daughters, and had the other one, who was

eight or nine, with her. They landed at her sister’s place in New West, and she didn’t go back,” Grierson said. She raised her daughters as a single parent, while going to night school to get her B.C. teaching certificate. In her 40s she

took up tai chi and yoga, and after she retired from teaching she started playing slo-pitch softball, at the age of 70. She rediscovered a love of competitive sport she had back in Saskatchewan, where she spent her

summers playing baseball. When she left her slo-pitch team a few years later, a friend suggested she try track. Grierson met her when she was 89, and was amazed at the intensity of her training regimen.

Okanagan winery focuses on 4 varieties

Tim Pawsey

Notable Potables The other day I meandered my way up

towards the northern end of Lake Okanagan to check out 50th Parallel Estate for the first time. With its steep, southwest-facing, welldrained slopes and focus very much on Pinot Noir (made by former Quails’ Gate winemaker, and coowner, Grant Stanley) this is yet one more landmark winery in the making. Unlike many other wineries, 50th Parallel is focused on just four varieties, all estate planted,

with plans for at least 40 per cent of the production going into Pinot Noir. Even though the plantings are still relatively young, Stanley’s experience and his ability to truly focus solely on the home vineyard (about 45 acres planted) is already paying dividends. Late this summer a state-of-the-art, gravity flow winery will be completed, just in time for the 2014 vintage. By 2016 there will be a multi-

purpose reception facility and spa. It’s an interesting juxtaposition. Or, as co-owner SheriLee Turner-Krouzel likes to say, “You’ll be able to detox then retox!” I’m struck by the house style that’s emerging. These are very focused wines, varietally true, lean in a good way, without being sparse, for the most part dry finished and very food friendly. Already, Stanley’s latest releases, including 2013

Pinot Noir, are starting to garner attention in major competitions. 50th Parallel 2012 Pinot Noir Cherry and dark red berry notes with an appealing savoury edge below clean fruit expression. Mediumbodied with a touch of mineral wrapped in good acidity before a long finish (91 points, $32, gold, AllCanadian Wine Awards). 50th Parallel 2013 Pinot Gris Lifted citrus and orchard fruit, green apple, spice and good balance with a crisp, clean finish ($18, 89 points). 50th Parallel 2013 Pinot Noir Rosé Bright strawberry and red fruits on top, followed by a juicy, lively palate with a little herbal edge ($18, 90 points). A word of advice if you go: try not to wind up on the new parkway that will transport you with no chance of escape halfway to Vernon. Ideally, either take Oceala Road from Highway 97 (before the parkway) and wend your way up via Gray Monk or Intrigue; stick close to the shores of Lake Okanagan and you’ll find 50th Parallel close to the end of Terrace View road. Speaking of landmark wineries: Black Hills Nota Bene 2012 The flagship blend is still approachably Merlotdominant but has enough Cab Sauv (35 per cent)

that delivers extra heft, along with Cabernet Franc. Look for black fruit aromas and earthy plum notes, with luscious blackberry and anise on the supple, full-bodied palate, and a touch of vanilla and spice wrapped in well-integrated tannins before a lingering, peppery close (92 points). The bad news? You’ll have to dig hard to find it. Best head smartly to the winery to taste it in one of the valley’s most sophisticated and fun settings. Just introduced this year: food from Joy Road Vineyard Kitchen, as well as daily poolside Happy Hour, complete with DJ and two-forone tasting deals. Check blackhillswinery.com for details. Belly’s Best Heartland Spice Trader 2012 (South Australia) Fire up the barbie for this Shiraz Cab with a difference made by star Barossa winemaker Ben Glaetzer. The Shiraz delivers that familiar, plush black and blue fruit, while the Cab brings structure and length with a definite spicy streak and easy tannins in a juicy, mouth-filling drop that deserves a serious steak (90 points, BCLS $19.99). Albertina showcases huge collection Prince Albert bought in bulk for hisVienna art museum

JOHN MASTERS MeridianWriters’ Group

VIENNA— The Albertina museum has the world’s largest and finest collection of Old Masters prints and drawings, gathered from across Europe. How did they all end up in Vienna? That story is told in From Dürer to Napoleon: the Origins of the Albertina, which also showcases 100 of the best works currently on view at the museum. The answer, in a nutshell, is that Prince Albert of Saxony married well — very well — and passionately embraced the ideals of the Enlightenment. The exhibition’s 15 large rooms are divided between displaying the artworks and telling the story of their collector. If the latter were hived off into a separate show it could be called It’s a Wonderful Life.

he wed, Marie Christine (1742-1798), was an archduchess and daughter of the Habsburg emperor, a very major royal house, indeed. Marie Christine was her mother’s favourite and therefore the only one of 16 children allowed to marry not for dynastic reasons, but for love. She chose Albert. Via paintings, silverware and various jewel-encrusted ornaments, the exhibition demonstrates how lavish their lifestyle was. They had more than 500 servants and made Grand Tours of the continent, visiting galleries and staying with relatives who, in their case, were usually the rulers. Marie Antoinette, for example, the French king Louis XVI’s wife, was Marie Christine’s little sister.

From the beginning, the pair were art connoisseurs. Marie Christine herself drew, and two of her sketches, included in this exhibition, show her to be quite good. Albert read widely and bought one of the first copies of Diderot’s Encyclopédie, a series of volumes meant to encapsulate all of human knowledge to that time. This was what the Enlightenment

was about: assembling, classifying and sharing what we know, pushing reason to the foreground, burying superstition and ignorance. Albert decided he would do the same for art. Instead of buying for princely vanity, his idea was to collect enough of an artist to be able to critically appraise his work, and to arrange items not by theme, as was then

SALSA by the Sea

the case, but by region and date. He bought in bulk and in the end amassed 14,000 drawings and 200,000 prints. In keeping with Albert’s system, the works shown here are grouped by region. Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael are in one room; Dürer, for whom the Albertina is especially famous, in another, with The Hare (1502), the museum’s Mona Lisa, having pride of place. Further on are galleries devoted to Rubens, Rembrandt and the elder Breughel; then French drawings, including Boucher; and finally artists from Albert’s own days, among them Jacques-Louis David and Caspar David Friedrich. One marvels, quite aside from the works’ artistic merits, at the superb draftsmanship on display throughout. After his wife’s death from typhus in 1798, at 56, Albert spent much of his remaining quarter century working at his palace, the Albertina, cataloguing and filling in missing bits. He was rather like a baseballcard collector. But what a collection. If you go: For more information on From Dürer to Napoleon: the Origins of the Albertina visit the museum’s website at albertina.at. Time to bone up on dog bone safety I was watching my dogs eat bones the other day and was enthralled by it. There was a trance-like state of serenity about them as they closed their eyes, held one end of the flat rib bone between their front feet and methodically gnawed on the other end with their back teeth. The pleasure they were in was obvious. Nothing, not a squirrel, not a bird, not even a neighbouring dog barking could distract them from their objective — chewing a raw bone. Every once in a while, with their eyes still closed in their pleasure trance, they would stop and slowly give the bone a big lick, move it around a little and then begin their methodical gnawing once again. With each grind of their back teeth their bodies absorbed the minerals locked inside the bone and their teeth were naturally cleaned by the grinding action. After about an hour they lifted their heads, panting from the exhaustive physical and

Joan Klucha

Canine Connection mental effort it takes to eat a raw bone, and rested contently. Shortly after that, they all rolled onto their sides and fell asleep still grasping their bones. There was a message in this about the joy of simple pleasures. Yes, I feed my dogs raw bones and raw meat. I have no concern for whatever the current controversy is regarding feeding dogs a raw diet. I’ve been feeding my dogs this way for decades. They absolutely thrive on it and I have no desire to change it. But I do respect that it is not for everyone or for every dog. Feeding raw food

to your dog is a bit of a science. There has to be some knowledge of minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, and the crucial role a proper balance between these minerals plays in the body of a dog. The knowledge I have comes after literally decades of self-teaching. There are many raw food enthusiasts, like myself, out there who work for businesses that sell raw dog food — which I do not — who are willing and able to help you begin your raw food educational journey, if this interests you. But a good place to start is with recreational raw bones. These bones are fed to dogs that are either on a raw food diet or not. They are meant more for entertainment value, hence the term recreational, and are not fed every day. Before you run out and give your dog a bone to ease his boredom, there are a few safety issues to review first. Although safe, chewing bones can create some bone-related

problems in your dog if you are not savvy in your bone choices. Bowel blockages may happen when aggressive chewers chomp off a lot of bone at once resulting in impactions, which may end with a trip to the vet. Signs of impaction can include bloating or frequent, unsuccessful attempts to defecate or vomit. Long bones or shaftstyle bones are not suited for these “go-for-broke” chewing dogs. Large knuckle bones that are usually larger than the dog’s head are best. Cooked bones tend to get brittle and very hard and can break into sharp pieces causing internal harm. There is also the risk of broken teeth when eating long or shaft-style bones. Flat bones, like neck or hip bones, are a better choice because they are softer and less likely to break teeth. Dogs that are new to bones or that eat primarily a kibble diet can suffer from loose stools normally caused by the

Happy Canada Day!

marrow inside the bone. Long bones contain more marrow than flat bones or knuckle bones. Consuming large amounts of bone can cause constipation and the result is a powdery, yellowish stool. To prevent constipation, it is important to monitor your dog to make sure it is not consuming too much bone in one sitting.

Finally, if feeding raw bones interests you, be sure that you have a veterinarian who is knowledgeable or at least an advocate of feeding raw food to dogs. SPCA seeks donations to pay for dog’s surgery The West Vancouver SPCA branch is reaching out to the public for help covering some costly vet bills incurred by a dog that was recently dropped off at the shelter in bad shape. Little Pete was found in critical condition, injured and bleeding, suffering from several serious lacerations. A Good Samaritan brought the spaniel to the branch and he was immediately rushed to an emergency animal hospital for treatment. Now recovering in foster care after surgery, he will soon be looking for a permanent home. Branch manager Dragana Hajdukovic calls Little Pete “quite the charmer.” “He has endeared himself to everyone in foster care and loves moving

from lap to lap, looking for attention and love,” she says in a press release. “He’s making great progress as he recovers and loves following his foster family around everywhere. He’s very wellmannered and even dances with excitement to greet his human guardians.” The estimated cost for Little Pete’s medical bills is expected to exceed $2,500. A non-profit organization, the BC SPCA relies mainly on public donations. “We just want to see this courageous little canine get a chance to experience a long, active and happy life,” Hajdukovic says. To donate, visit the branch in person at 1020 Marine Dr.,West Vancouver, or go to spca. bc.ca. — Christine Lyon

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY

Ruling the Grind at age 69 Senior wins multi-climb challenge with 15 Grinds in one day ANDY PREST aprest@nsnews.com

NorthVancouver’s Idar Karlsen climbed the same mountain 15 times last Saturday, winning Grouse Mountain’s inaugural Multi-Grouse Grind Challenge. To put that into perspective, that is like running an entire marathon, plus a bonus kilometre or so, straight up a mountain. That’s 12.8 kilometres of elevation gain, or roughly the elevation gain of travelling from base camp to the peak of Mount Everest — three times. That’s 42,450 stairs, the equivalent of walking up to the 86th floor observation deck at the Empire State Building — 27 times. To summarize, that’s a whole lot of climbing. And maybe the most remarkable stat of all has to do with Karlsen, the event’s champion: he’s 69 years old. “It just comes down to doing one Grind at a time,” said Karlsen with more than a hint of a Norwegian accent coming through. “If you are in good shape you just keep on going.” Karlsen grew up in Northern Norway, north of the Arctic Circle, and came to Canada when he was 20 years old. “I thought I’d come over to the West Coast and stay for a year,” he said. “At that time you couldn’t get a work permit, so I immigrated. And here I am.” He eventually became the chief electrician at the paper mill on Annacis Island before it closed down. Karlsen coached his kids in sports like softball and baseball but never got into elite sports himself. “I don’t know that I would call myself an athlete,” he said with a laugh. When the kids left home he increased his fitness regime, hiking trails all over British Columbia and taking up kayaking. He

Karlsen did the Grind so much that he decided to move from Coquitlam to North Vancouver three years ago. Since then he has really started cranking out the Grinds, doing 345 official ascents last year and 115 already this year, putting

him first by more than 30 on the official Grind stats page for 2014 climbs. With 725 official Grinds in his lifetime Karlsen ranks seventh on the all-time list. Last Saturday’s Challenge — cleverly scheduled for the longest day of the year — saw seven athletes racing to claim the first official record for most ascents in one day. Other

unofficial records have been set but this was the first race sanctioned by Grouse Mountain, with proceeds going to the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation Grind For Kids program. The action got underway at 4 a.m. and Grind veteran Colin Pither, who happens to be 45 years younger than Karlsen, set a fast early pace. The climbers continued to

Grind away while the trail became busier and busier with Saturday traffic. “It’s pretty awful,” Karlsen said of trying to keep a pace while faced with a wall of tourists. “There’s people everywhere so you’ve really got to concentrate on where you step and what the people See Tomlinson page 26

are doing ahead of you.” Karlsen settled into a rhythm of doing two or three in a row before stopping for food, averaging about 50 minutes per ascent. “You can throw in a 45 but it just takes too much out of you, and it doesn’t fit with the Gondola,” said Karlsen. “I tried to time it so I’d get there just in time to make the Gondola so I don’t have to stand on top waiting, while at the same time not taking too much out of me. Just nice and steady. . . . I missed one (Gondola) that I really wanted to get. The girls and guys that run the Gondola, I’ve known them now for quite a while. They’re very nice.” By late afternoon Karlsen’s steady approach put him into the lead and he stayed there for good. By the end of the night he

was the clear-cut winner, outpacing all his younger opponents. Others may have been surprised to see a 69year-old take the title, but Karlsen was not. His vast Grind experience includes many days full of multiples — his previous best was 13 in a day — and the younger racers will catch up to him once they get a bit more experience, he said. “I think this was a good learning experience for them and I’m sure they will come back strong next year if they enter,” he said, adding that the day didn’t take too much out of him. “I feel good. A lot of it is mental toughness. Part of it you learn from training by yourself and running marathons. That is something that makes you pretty strong mentally.” Veteran Grinder Sarah Tomlinson set the pace in the women’s event, ending the day with 13 ascents.

“She’s an awesome lady,” said Karlsen. “Strong, strong hiker.” Karlsen, meanwhile, doesn’t expect to ever top his record of 15 if the race format stays the same — all of the racers had to swipe in for their last ascent by 10 p.m. “I’d have to pick up another half an hour somewhere along the line and I’m not so sure of that,” he said. “I do not have 16, within the time frame that we had this year.” That, however, is not going to stop him from hitting the Grind at least once every day that he is in the Lower Mainland. “You meet a lot of very nice people and you strike up friendships,” he said. “You come down and have a cup of coffee or tea with them. For a retired guy that wants to stay in shape, it’s nice.”
