The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure. Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports. During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator. Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business community. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century. His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama athletics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a
10
positive direction toward a future that holds great promise. Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama officially dedicated the facility formerly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility. Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced several Southeastern Conference championships, winning titles in gymnastics, men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball; and an NCAA gymnastics championship. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis. In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.
Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of seven national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, and 1992), 14 SEC championships, and 27 bowl trips during his career as a player and coach, the first as a member of the Crimson Tide’s 1961 national championship team. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of seven national championships. During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bryant’s graduate assistant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for five years beginning in 1965 before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82 and serving as the Tide’s first offensive coordinator starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for Alabama’s last four national championship teams. A 1963 graduate of The University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He has been married to the former Charlotte Davis of Tuscaloosa since July 20, 1968. They have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

Up before the sun, the rowers converge on the Crimson Tide’s home on the Black Warrior River, which boasts of high banks, long, protected straightaways, and minimal current, making it a prime training site. The start time on the water varies by when the sun is high enough in the sky so the rowers can see and be seen, the intensity does not vary, as Alabama works hard to move up to the elite level of collegiate rowing as fast as possible. After workouts, the student-athletes grab a quick breakfast before heading out to class.

p w. paul w bryant a academic Center The Center for Athletic Student Services (CASS), a mainstay of The University of Alabama’s academic success, got a huge boost when it moved into its new home in the spring of 2005. The Crimson Tide’s academic home, the Paul W. Bryant Academic Center, is the crown jewel in Alabama’s $125-plus million Crimson Tradition building initiative. “This project was certainly one of our focal points when we started the renovations of our athletic facilities,” athletics director Mal Moore said. “Academics are at the center of our mission at Alabama and we wanted to create a place that would aid all our student-athletes in their educational pursuits. Bryant Hall provides everything we need in that regard.” Through the auspices of the Crimson Tradition Fund, Alabama took its former athletic dorm and converted it into 18
a 55,000-square foot state-of-the-art facility that benefits all 500-plus Crimson Tide student-athletes. “Bryant Hall is a tremendous facility for our studentathletes,” Heather Anders, the rowing team’s academic advisor said. “Within Bryant Hall a student-athlete has everything that they need to be successful academically and it demonstrates the commitment The University of Alabama and the athletics department has to that success. Bryant Hall has everything under one roof, a tremendous asset for our student-athletes and their busy schedules. They can meet with their advisor, work with a tutor, attend their orientation class, use the math lab, reading lab, writing lab, or computer lab – all right here.” Among the building’s many amenities is a 48-seat computer lab with brand-new equipment. The computer lab also houses 25 laptop computers that can be checked out
by student-athletes for use on road trips. There are math, English, and writing labs as well as individual study rooms. The athletic academic advisor offices are also housed in the building along with several study lounges, two 50-seat classrooms and a 140-seat classroom. The classrooms utilize cutting-edge teaching devices, including digital overhead projectors and “smart boards” that allow instructors to interact with students on the go. Throughout the building there are 16 information stations that provide student-athletes with news about tutorials, study sessions and even practice schedules. The building also houses the Crimson Tide’s Academic Hall of Fame and its nationally recognized LifeSkills program.

For coach Larry Davis the goal is simple. He wants his student-athletes to leave Alabama with a championship trophy under one arm and a diploma under the other. And success for the rowing team has been immediate. Over the last three years, 16 rowers have earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award a total of 25 times, including nine last season. And on a conference level, Alabama’s rowers have been named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll 48 times, including 23 last year. Last season, senior Stacey Ogle became the first Tide rower to earn a place on the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large second team. The secret behind the academic success for Tide student-athletes is really no secret at all. Alabama’s Center of Athletic Student Services, located in the state-ofthe-art Paul W. Bryant Academic Center, stands ready to help Tide student-athletes get the most out of their academic experience at one of the nation’s finest universities. CASS is headed by Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services Jon Dever. Dever is assisted by Heather Anders, rowing’s academic advisor, Tom Buttram, Barbara DeLaire, Brenda Elliott, Fern Hampton, Jason Johns, Jill Lancaster, Lisa Patrick and Lance Walker. Joining this group are six
interns and 65 part-time tutors. The entire operation is housed in the Bryant Hall Academic Center. Dever and his staff work with athletes from every sport to ensure that they first receive a quality education before taking their first stroke on the river. The CASS staff works as a liaison between the Athletic Department, undergraduate divisions, and the administrative offices of the university. The staff assists with class-scheduling and registration, makes sure all athletes are maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degrees, monitors academic eligibility and provides career counseling. The advisors also secure tutors and schedule study sessions. From the moment a recruit first walks on to campus to the moment an athlete graduates with diploma in hand, the academic services provided are outstanding. For the first year at the Capstone, freshmen and junior college transfers are required to attend nightly study halls. After that, the attendance is based on the individual’s GPA and study needs. The dedicated CASS staff can only give guidance and direction. Achievement is left in the hands of the student-athlete. If the athlete wishes to succeed in the classroom as they do in competition, then Alabama’s CASS will provide them with every opportunity to achieve the highest goals.

COACHINGSTaFF Four years into the process, it’s obvious that rowing coach Larry Davis is in the place where he wants to be, involved with a sport he loves. With a passion for the sport and a strong relationship with the city of Tuscaloosa, Davis is doing exactly what he’s always wanted to. “I love the sport of rowing and it’s something where I really have a commitment to the University and the city of Tuscaloosa. It’s a place I’ve been at now for 12 years.” Davis, who still gets on the water himself on a regular basis, has taught the team to take it one step at a time, and with 20
the University’s help, the process has been accelerated faster than anyone could have imagined. “One of the things that I’ve learned over time is that good things take time and you have to put them all in layers and build on the pace and keep building. The University has been very good about giving us the tools we need on a step-by-step basis to achieve that.” It’s no easy task taking a club team and building it into a successful, Division-I NCAA program, but as year four approaches, Davis and his staff have much to be pleased with.
“We want to be one of those sports that represents the University at the highest level. I’m excited about being here and I think everybody with the program feels that way.” Success has come early and often for Alabama Rowing under Davis. In his first year, the Tide earned top-5 finishes at many of the regattas it competed at and won a number of races in dual-meet competitions against already well-established programs. At the Dad Vail College Championships, the Tide advanced to the semifinals in all of its races, something that is unheard of for such a green squad.
In only its second season, the Tide continued to make enormous strides forward, most notably at the esteemed Head of the Charles Regatta where Alabama’s Varsity 8+ grabbed a silver in the women’s Club race. In the spring, Alabama went to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships and came home with a silver medal for their efforts in the Varsity 8+ race, placing them second overall at the regatta. At the Dad Vail, the Tide followed up their first-year success by once again advancing to the semifinals in all their races and making it to the finals
in two events, including a fourth-place finish in the Grand Final of the Novice 8+ race. Not only have Tide rowers seen success on the water, but they have also excelled in the classroom. Over the last three years, Alabama rowers have earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award 25 times, including nine last season. On a conference level, Alabama’s rowers have been named to the Southeastern Conference AcademicHonor Roll 48 times, including 23 last year alone. Such success for such a young program is nothing short of astounding, but it was certainly in line with Davis’ goals when he took the job as Alabama’s inaugural head coach.
“We have a plan, and it’s an aggressive plan, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s one that we can fulfill,” Davis said. His plan includes steady, and as he said, aggressive improvement in all phases of the program year-to-year and includes competing for an NCAA Championship bid within the program’s first eight to 10 years. “Starting from almost scratch, to see it move along in a span of really three-years plus, it’s very rewarding to see that kind of growth. We need to realize that we still have a long way to go but there’s so much opportunity here that I can’t see us not achieving the kind of success that I think we’re capable of.” This success has been part of Davis’ vision from day one, Feb. 2, 2006, when after an exhaustive search, the University’s athletics department made it official: Larry Davis was its new rowing coach. From the first mention of rowing being added, the best candidate to lead this new varsity sport was Davis. He was hard at work, already building a rowing tradition in Tuscaloosa. “We are excited to have a coach of Larry Davis’ knowledge and experience on board as we start this new venture,” Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore said. “Larry is well respected and connected in the rowing community and brings immediate respect to our program.” Davis has constructed Alabama’s varsity program from the ground up. Rowing is the 21st sport at the Capstone and the first to be added since softball in 1996. From day one until now, intimidation is something the coaches have tried to combat as it
is a key step towards future success. “I think the next thing we need to do as a team is realize that these big name teams, they’re just people,” Davis said. ”One of the things we’re doing is working hard and we expect to beat those well-established squads. Just because you’re sitting next to them on the line and they’ve had a tradition of 10 years, 20 years, or however long they’ve run, doesn’t mean they’re inhuman.” Davis’ past in rowing spans 40 years, including 25 as a coach. Before starting the Crimson Tide’s program, he coached the Alabama Crew Club starting in 1998. In addition to his duties with the University’s club team, he has served as the Director of Wellness and Aquatics at the YMCA of Tuscaloosa County. “I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with the students of the University of Alabama club crew program over the years,” Davis said. “They impressed me with their work ethic and character. Coaching the club also provided me the opportunity to discover what a great institution the University of Alabama is.” Prior to his time in Tuscaloosa, Davis spent 1981-93 at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he was the head coach of the varsity crew and served as the school’s compliance officer as well. He led Marist to wins at the MAAC Championship Regatta and the New York State Small College Championships. He was also the head coach of the University of AlabamaHuntsville’s varsity crew from 1977-81. Aside from his collegiate duties, Davis spent time with the U.S. National Team. In 1983 Davis was an assistant coach for the United States Men’s National Rowing team and later, in 1987, he served as team manager. In 1983 the National Team competed at the World Championships in Germany and the Pan American Games in Venezuela, with the men’s 8+ winning gold at the Pan American Games. The 1987 squad made it to the World Championships in Denmark and the men’s 8+ once again won gold. “I’ve worked with a lot of different programs at a lot of different levels and I try to bring that experience to bear in everything I do, from putting together workouts, to talking with the rowers, to race day,” Davis said. As an athlete he rowed for Washington-Lee High School in Virginia where he was a member of the last varsity 8+ to win gold at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. Davis continued his rowing career at the University of Virginia where he won numerous competitions including the MidAmerican Championship and the Southern Collegiate Rowing Association Championship. During Davis’ time in Charlottesville the Cavaliers finaled at the Dad Vail Small College Championships three years, earning a bronze medal in 1971. Davis spent all his undergraduate and graduate years at UVA earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1973, followed up by a master’s in counseling in 1977. He is married to the former Vicki Barnes of Madison, Ala. 21
Derek Tuten is now in his third year coaching the Alabama Rowing team. His involvement spans all aspects of the program, but this season Tuten will focus primarily on the novice squad for the first time in his coaching career. He will also retain his responsibilities as the program’s boatman/rigger, in charge of maintenance of equipment and keeping the mechanical aspects of the program in top shape. “Derek’s always been a really good technician and he works on the basics that a lot of people may find tedious, but that’s really important because we still rely a lot on walk-ons,” Davis said. In a sport as young as rowing is at the Capstone, many athletes joining are not seasoned, dedicated athletes to the sport. Tuten focuses on instilling the basics into his athletes in hopes they will develop a passion for the sport. ”We need somebody in that position who has the patience to go through all the very basic things that need to be estab22
lished in the students’ mindset and skill-set to really help us have that base of productive walk-ons,” Davis said. “Just because somebody has never rowed before doesn’t mean that they can’t be a contributor and turn out to be a top-level athlete for us.” An Alabama graduate and Tuscaloosa native, Tuten has been around the area and the Alabama rowing scene for quite some time. He served as head coach for the Alabama Crew Club before joining the Tide staff in the summer of 2007. As the Alabama Crew’s coach, he led the men to a huge win at the Head of the South and earned a finalist spot at the S.I.R.A. Championships. “Derek is an excellent teacher when it comes to rowing,” Davis said. “He brings a balance and patience to the program in terms of how he goes about his coaching. A keen observer, he takes what he sees and works individually with the studentathletes to teach them the skills they need to be successful.” A member of Central High School’s 1997 graduating class,
Tuten coached the Alabama Crew Club for two years as an assistant under Davis before taking over the head coaching position in 2006. During his time as head coach, the club was a consistent medalist. Tuten was a four-year member of the club he eventually coached, the Alabama Crew Club, while pursuing his degree in psychology at the Capstone. He also spent time rowing for the Riverside Boat Club and Community Rowing in Boston, one the nation’s hot spots for competitive rowing. As a crew member, Tuten rowed at the U.S. Rowing National Championships as well as the C.R.A.S.H. – B Sprints World Indoor Championships. He won gold at the Southeastern Championships, Head of the South and Chattanooga Head Race during his career, while also medaling at the Head of the Chattahoochee, Head of the Tennessee, Augusta Invitational, Tennessee Indoor Sprints, Atlanta Indoor Sprints and Clemson Sprints.
Chelsea Pemberton, who joins the Crimson Tide coaching staff this season, brings a wealth of rowing experience to Alabama. The Jacksonville, Fla., native serves as an assistant coach with the Tide’s varsity, working with the Tide’s smaller boats in addition to assisting head coach Larry Davis with the overall varsity program. “I’m very excited to be a part of The University of Alabama and the rowing program,” Pemberton said. “This is a great time to be on this campus with so many tremendous things going on. I also love that I have the opportunity to be a part of a program that is growing by leaps and bounds and is on its way to the top.”
Pemberton also serves as Alabama’s recruiting coordinator, helping bring the next generation of rowers to the Capstone. “Chelsea is going to be vital to our growth in a variety of areas, not the least of which is recruiting,” Alabama head coach Larry Davis said. “We’ve done a good job of growing with the talent we have on hand, but to continue on the path we’re on, to fulfill our goal of competing at the NCAA Championships, we’re going to have to improve both the level of talent we’re bringing in to the program and the depth we have in the program. Chelsea will be spending a lot of her time focusing on finding those quality athletes that are going to be able to be of value to us.”
A three-time All-American at the University of Tennessee, Pemberton is very familiar with what it takes to be a success in collegiate rowing. She helped lead the Lady Vols to their first appearance at the NCAA Championships during her career in Knoxville as well as being named to the All-South Region team all four years of her career. She began rowing in high school, competing for Stanton College Preparatory High School starting in 1997 and saw immediate success, earning a state title in the Varsity 8+ and a national championship in the Junior 4+ as well as leading her shell to a win in the high school category at the legendary Head of the Charles Regatta in 2000.
Her success as a prep rower led to a spot on the United States Junior National Team. As a part of Team USA, she rowed to a fifth place finish at Junior World Championships in Duisburg, Germany, in the Women’s 8+. After graduating from Tennessee, Pemberton started her coaching career in Knoxville with the Oak Ridge Rowing Association before moving on to the East Tennessee Rowing Organization and then joining the MastersCoaching staff, coaching masters women at camps and clinics across the country.

In her second year as part of the Crimson Tide’s rowing staff, Sarah Laurent is charged with the day-to-day details of keeping the program running, taking care of travel arrangements, paperwork and the like while also lending a hand with coaching as well. “When Sarah was looking toward graduate school, one of the things she was looking for was to stay connected with rowing,” Alabama head coach Larry Davis said. “We feel fortunate to have her as part of our staff because she has a real passion for the sport. And not only does she know rowing, but she comes in with experience on the administrative side of things as well.” Prior to joining the Tide, Laurent worked with the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation and the Chesapeake Boathouse which is being developed as one of the main venues for rowing in the United States. She brings that experience of what it takes to organize and take of the logistics of a rowing program to the Crimson Tide.

Even with the most physically conditioned athletes, injury can occur. The University of Alabama is prepared for such moments, with a full staff of doctors and athletic trainers ready to lend their expertise to any medical situation so Alabama’s athletes can return to play in peak condition as soon as it’s safe and possible. Dr. Jimmy Robinson, Dr. Craig Buettner and Dr. Jeff Laubenthal all volunteer their time to ensure that Crimson Tide athletes stay in peak medical condition. They supervise the total healthcare needs of all of Alabama’s athletes. Other physicians helping to keep the Tide healthy include Dr. Les Fowler and world-renowned orthopedic surgeons Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Lyle Cain. Bill McDonald heads the athletic training staff. A member of the Tide staff since 1987, McDonald’s area of expertise extends from athletic training to administration. After serving as the Tide’s head athletic trainer from 1987 through the 1998 season, he moved to the administrative side in 1999, and currently serves as Director of Sports Medicine. Rodney Brown is the director of rehabilitations services.
The Coleman Coliseum training room is staffed by seven full-time athletic trainers, including Sherry Kimbro (soccer and rowing), John Morr (men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf), Joe Hoffer (baseball and volleyball), Bernard Burroughs, (men’s and women’s track and field), Monica Decker (gymnastics), Nick Seiler (softball) and Jeremy Dobbs (women’s basketball, swimming and diving). Jeff Allen is the head football athletic trainer. He is assisted by assistant athletic trainer Ginger Gilmore and Jeremy Gsell and two graduate assistants, Nick Williams and Dan Jacobi. The coliseum staff also consists of six graduate assistant athletic trainers: Kelly Bridges (swimming and diving), Andrea Torbey (men’s and women’s tennis), Katie Murphy (women’s track and field), BJ Leyser (rowing) , Tasha Temple (rowing) and Jody Green (volleyball). Athletic trainers can spend an average of 10 to 12 hours a day on the job depending on what point of the season the team is in. Alabama ensures the safety of its athletes by assigning at least one athletic trainer to each team to cover home and away events, conditioning, practice and travel.

It has been a fast ride for the Alabama Rowing team. It seems like just yesterday the program was dipping its oars into the Black Warrior River for the first time as a varsity program and now, this season, the first class of four-year seniors will be leading the way for the Crimson Tide. “I think the program has come quite a ways and I think some of it has to do with having recruited athletes on the team, and some of it has to do with people having a better understanding of what NCAA Division I really requires you to commit to if you’re going to do well,” head coach Larry Davis said. From a club team to an NCAA varsity program, the Alabama rowing team has undergone a quick transformation over the last four short years. Creating an established, successful program in any sport takes quite a bit of time, but rowing has the extra hurdle of being a largely unfamiliar sport within the high school ranks. The challenge 26
for the Alabama coaching staff then is to not only bring in top-flight athletic talent, but in many cases, to teach that talent the basics of rowing as well. one reason for Alabama’s swift progression as a program is that Davis and his staff have a fundamental, from the ground up, coaching strategy. Newcomers, whether they are recruited athletes or walk-ons, are developed first in novice boats and then propelled into highly-competitive varsity boats. Although still young, success has come quick and grown each year since the program’s inception as a varsity program in 2006. Tide rowers earned medals at almost every competition they entered during the 2008-09 season and they will look to build upon last year’s success going into this brand-new season. “I think initially when we started off as a club team transitioning to a varsity program, the girls that came out, didn’t really have a good idea of what was going to be
expected of them and they didn’t realize how hard they were going to have to work to be competitive,” Davis said. “We want to make sure we’re racing fast enough to be in the hunt for the medals.” The 2009-10 season finds Alabama reaping the rewards of three years of constant development and improvement as its first class of true seniors take the reins. After growing up in the program, leadership and dedication is something that Davis expects from his seasoned rowers this time around. “one of the things I want from our seniors, aside from general leadership, is to be able to keep people on track and to be more consistent in our workouts and how we approach things,” Davis said. In general, the coaching staff, which consists of Davis as well as assistant coaches Derek Tuten and Chelsea Pemberton, feels that with a veteran core and a fresh crop of recruits, the benchmark for the Alabama rowing program
is no longer to just hang with the bigger, more established programs, but rather to compete with and even beat some of them. Teams such as Clemson, Virginia and Tennessee, who Alabama has faced in the past, set the bar with times that the Tide looks to match. To beat teams of this caliber, the Tide will look to improve and build on their past victories. “If we can get closer and get by some of those top-20 teams, by an Indiana or Louisville, then we’re definitely making the kind of progress we want,” Davis said. “A goal of ours over the last two years has been to show a little more consistency in our execution. We have our highs and lows, hots and colds, and I want to have that fluctuation a lot less. I think that between the senior leadership and these good athletes that we have coming in from last year’s novice squad, I’d like to see us be a lot more consistent in how we practice and how we race.” As the program progresses so should its confidence and that is something Davis has emphasized
throughout the offseason. The team will need to focus on the fact that tradition and tenure of a program does not necessarily mean that they are better than you on any given day. “The biggest thing that we have to be aware of as a team, when you see all these big names that have been making it to the NCAAs, the tendency is to think that they’re super-human or someone that you can’t touch, and that’s not true. If you look at somebody that surprises people, where did they come from, they didn’t let the name or the venues intimidate them.” The three years of experience has primed the team for success. However, the fact that Alabama is poised to leap up the ranks of success may not be something that all teams notice, and that’s okay with Davis. “Given that this is our fourth year and we have some good seniors, I’m hoping that maturity and leadership are going to come through,” Davis said. “I think we’re very capable of surprising some people.”

lending a Helping Hand From the day the first boat went on the river, Alabama Rowing has dedicated itself to excellence in all things. And success, and excellence, has come swiftly to the fourth-year program. On the water, the Tide has made an immediate impact, climbing the ranks at the top regattas and sweeping several dual meets in its first three years. In the classroom, Crimson Tide rowers already rank among the best, turning in outstanding grades in some of the University’s toughest majors. The Tide doesn’t stop there though. In just its second year as a varsity team, the rowers amassed the most community outreach hours of any team at the Capstone, a feat it repeated last season. The rowing program volunteers on a regular basis with a wide variety of organizations. Overall, rowers participated in over 2,000 hours over the last two years. “As a program, it is important to us, that our student-athletes excel in all areas of the collegiate experience,” head coach Larry Davis said. “We want them to be at their best athletically and academically, but more than that, we want them to understand and embrace the concept of being active and positive members of their community. I am very pleased with how our ladies have responded to that challenge and the work they do in the University and Tuscaloosa community.”
Individually, the Alabama Athletics Department honors student-athletes in two different community outreach categories. Five student-athletes were honored with The Community Outreach award, given annually to the student-athletes with the highest overall service hours. The 2008-09 honorees in that category were rowers Amy Allison, Erika Baranek and Katie Smith, along with soccer player Kailey Corken and softball player Catherine Dozier. The Community Outreach – Tuscaloosa Community award honors student-athletes with the highest service hours in the Tuscaloosa community. The 2008-09 honorees were rower Jessica Autrey, Corken, softball player Catherine Dozier, swimmer Kate Shannon Gray and soccer player Karen Lansden.

TIDEHISToRy
The Black Warrior River was the scene for the historic inception of Tide Rowing in October 2005. As Athletics Director Mal Moore stood on the river’s bank, he announced the addition of rowing to the varsity lineup, a sport that spent almost two decades of growth in the Tuscaloosa area. Moore, accompanied by University President Robert E. Witt, made it official: rowing was going to the next level. With the scenic river behind them, rowing had just become the 21st varsity sport at the University of Alabama.
THe STaRT The Launch Party:
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Athletics Director Mal Moore, UA President Dr. Robert E. Witt and Associate Athletics Director Marie Robbins were all on hand for the announcement that Alabama would add rowing as a varsity sport on the banks of the Black Warrior River in the fall of 2005.
40
For over 20-plus years the sport of rowing had been growing in the Tuscaloosa community and with rowing’s popularity growing on the national scene, it almost seemed like a varsity team had not come soon enough. At the Capstone, club rowing began in 1987, mainly as a social club with the intentions of going out and having fun, seeing little to no competition from other schools. At the beginning, rowing at Alabama was no different than
racquetball or rugby – among team members there was no rowing experience or real desire to succeed on the water. Then came a change when, in 1997, a few athletes with rowing experience joined the club squad, bringing with them a desire for change. The team adopted a more competitive attitude, spending more time practicing. Also during this transition the team began fund-raising more than ever. In 1998, Larry Davis and wife Vicki moved to Tuscaloosa so she could take on a new job, leaving the former rowing coach looking for local work. That’s when news of the University’s co-ed club rowing program in need of a coach came to light. Coaching rowing at a major university seemed like a comfortable fit for the former University of Virginia rower. In January 1998, Davis was introduced as the team’s volunteer coach. “Like any club that has never been organized or supervised, there was a learning curve,” Davis said. “Many of them had never been in a competitive sport before.”
In the meantime, Marie Robbins and others in the athletics department at Alabama were having discussions about adding a 21st varsity sport. There were a number of candidates to fill the slot, but Robbins, the senior women’s administrator, could not get past the quips she was hearing about a successful club that was making the best of their limited resources a little way up the Black Warrior River. “We started to delve into the issue about 2003,” Robbins said. “We began to talk about the opportunity to add an additional sport for women and provide additional participants the opportunity to compete.”

At the time of the varsity promotion, Davis was working as Director of Wellness and Aquatics at the Tuscaloosa YMCA, adding more to work to his already busy schedule with the duties he had taken over as the club rowing coach. During his time with the club, Davis turned rowing into a grassroots success on campus and had built up a team that was bringing home numerous medals, as well as back-toback points trophies at the Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga., with nothing more than a collective group of college
students who had only recently become interested in the sport. With a program and sport already in mind, it seemed natural to Robbins and those at the University to bring up the program’s coach as well. “We looked at a lot of coaches internally and externally and ultimately at the end of the day we decided that coach Davis, in terms of local knowledge and familiarity of the club program and local operation of the river also had a wealth of collegiate experience under his belt,” Robbins said. “For coach [Mal] Moore, Larry’s loyalty to the university was helpful in that for 10 years he worked in addition to his paid job to volunteer and coach these young ladies who had come out for the club team.” Davis’ resume included head coaching jobs at Marist College and the University of Alabama-Huntsville as well as an assistant coaching spot on the 1983 U.S. Men’s National Rowing Team. As of February 2006, Davis would be able to add one more school to that already impressive list. For a school with little experience in rowing, Robbins said, a seasoned coach like Larry Davis was the obvious answer.
“I think with Coach Davis it’s local knowledge,” she said. “Having been here for 10 years helps those of us with less knowledge about the sport.”

The transition from club to NCAA Division I proved challenging. The team was forced to move on without former club athletes who could not adjust to the commitment necessary to varsity-level rowing. Davis set up a challenging first-year schedule to help with the transition. The schedule included competitions against notable Division-I crews such as Notre Dame, Cincinnati and two schools that had previously beaten Alabama, Murray State and Creighton. “There was no fluff in the schedule,” Davis said, “but there were some teams I thought we could beat.” And to the surprise of many in collegiate rowing, they did. The Tide defeated past foes Murray State and Creighton, in addition to coming from behind to beat the Bearcats of Cincinnati. They medaled in all four events at the Head of the South Regatta, winning two of them. Alabama beat schools like North Carolina and Duke all while giving Notre Dame a bit of a scare, holding close to them in a couple of events.

Success came quickly to the first-year program despite unfamiliarity with the sport by the both the athletes and the athletic department’s support staff. Rowing was a sport that Robbins and her colleagues had to learn the nuances of, things such as the equipment and facilities necessary and how many staff members to hire. There were other challenges as well. “The biggest challenge is attitude,” Davis said. “When you’re dealing with walk-ons, I think a lot of people don’t understand the sport and how much hard work is involved. When you take somebody who’s used to a club mentality, the varsity level is much more intense. It takes athletes who are driven, dedicated and committed. It takes a lot of hard work, focus, discipline and sacrifice. “What I’m asking the students to do is move a boat over a mile and a quarter distance as fast as they can, which means they’re running flat out for somewhere near eight minutes. It’s enjoyable in one way, but it’s very painful. It’s not something your average person is going to want to do.”

After a successful first season in the spring, the Tide followed up with an extremely successful fall. The season opened up with a pair of top-three finishes and a silver medal finish all at the Head of the Charles Regatta, followed up by a gold medal at the Hobbs Island Regatta in Huntsville. The team continued to excel in the spring, winning race after race during the dual-meet season, including a programfirst sweep against UNC on their home water at Chapel Hill. Alabama would use strong dual meets to propel them into the postseason, earning a silver medal at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships. The Tide also finished second overall at the SIRA Championships, a major accomplishment for such a young program. At the Dad Vail College Championships, Alabama continued to take big strides, making it to the Grand Final of the Novice 8+ race, taking fourth overall.
yeaR THRee
The Tide kept stride and continued its winning ways, carrying over into its third season, a season emblazoned in bronze, silver and gold. Success came early as the women earned a pair of bronze medals and seven top-10 finishes at the Chattanooga Head Race to open the season. In their second race of the season, the squad split up with the varsity girls heading to Cambridge Mass., for the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta and the novice girls heading to Huntsville, Ala., for the Hobbs Island Regatta. Both teams experienced great success with the varsity girls placing 10th, beating 35 other teams at one of the most competitive races, while the novice girls brought home first and second place in the Novice 8+ race. The Tide earned five top-three finishes a pair of gold medals at the Head of the Tennessee Regatta. Closing out the fall season, the novice squad performed exceptionally well bringing home three medals, a bronze, silver and gold at the Head of the Hooch Regatta.
As the spring season got under way, Alabama made major strides, achieving success in meets against the likes of Clemson, Kansas State, Tennessee, North Carolina and Southern Methodist. The success against these established crews propelled the team to the postseason, earning two Grand Final berths at the SIRA Championship Regatta. As they continued through the postseason the team would see two crews head to the semifinals and one boat head to the petite finals at the Dad Vail Regatta. The girls advanced four crews to the finals of the South/Central Sprint Championships to cap off a very successful season. “This season was a transition where most of the club athletes were gone and we didn’t have as many seniors,” said Coach Davis. “I think that we increased our boat speed but we also toughened up our schedule. It was probably a little frustrating for the girls because we were going faster but we weren’t seeing some of the wins that we saw the year before because we were now rowing a lot of the top-20 teams in the United States.”
MoVINg FoRwaRd
To continue ascending towards the top of the collegiate rowing ranks it will take a large commitment from all involved. A commitment to winning and a commitment to success is something that is now expected from all involved. This season, the fourth, will be looked at as a season in which the Tide can sneak up on some people, according to Coach Davis. “I want to be the surprise team. Some of that is development of maturity, some of it is development of leadership, and I think that given that this is our fourth year and we do have some good seniors I’m hoping that that maturity and leadership is going to come through. I think we’re very capable of surprising some people.” The Tide will also have its first group of seniors who have come up through the program together. This senior leadership is something the team hopes to parlay into major success. “This year we have our first true recruiting class of athletes up at the varsity level and I’d like to see them really contribute,” said Coach Davis. “I think they definitely can, they did a great job last year and I’d like to see that continue this year.”
In the long term, top-10 rankings are expected, but the University also has some plans for the Tide rowers. The plans of the athletic department, Robbins said, are tailored to meet those needs, including the construction of a new boat house. “That is in our plans, to build a facility because we’re operating out of a temporary but functional facility on the north side of the river,” Robbins said. “Their locker room is at Coleman Coliseum and their workout area off-water is also in the Coliseum, so our immediate goal is to get them a facility down on the river that they can operate out of and do all those things with their locker room and workout facilities.” As the team continues to make a name for itself, recruiting will continue to play a large factor in achieving success. The coaches know that success does not always come quickly, but with time and patience all the hard work can pay off. It is a process of sorts that has helped such a young program blossom into a legitimate contender. “What we tell recruits is that they can have a bigger impact here,” Davis said. “But they have to have the patience and insight to make things happen, and they have to want to be a leader. They’re not just going to fit into a group, they will help make that group and build the tradition.” For those that join the Tide, the challenge is to never rest, to never slow down, to keep the success rolling along to ever higher levels. “As a team we are learning how to work at this level,” Davis said. “We are learning how to not only train extremely hard, but to also do that over a sustained period of time. The challenge is to get this team to a point where it is ready to compete at the highest level. Each new group has to realize that we can’t be satisfied with where we’ve been and still get to where we want to go.” For the Tide, success is not measured by each individual race or every finish line crossed. Success comes from a consistency and dedication that begins in the weight rooms and on the water at practice and is carried over to race day. Consistency is continually winning medals when no one expects you to. Consistency is Alabama Rowing.
Milestone:
One of the early milestones of the Crimson Tide Rowing team was winning a silver medal at the 2007 Head of the Charles Regatta which is one of the largest and most prestigious regattas in the world. 43

walk-ons Vital to Crimson Tide Success
It’s hard to believe it was four years ago that Katherine Spohr ambled down the sidewalks of the University of Alabama’s main artery, browsing the various booths that had set up along the walkways of the campus’ Quad for its annual “Get on Board Day.” Brushing shoulders with hundreds of fellow students, Spohr passed by dozens of booths recruiting new members – karate, College Republicans, yearbook – but didn’t give many a second look until she saw a stack of fliers on a table for the University’s rowing team. Spohr, who had no experience with rowing, casually took the top flier and kept walking. Its message was simple, yet clear: “Be a varsity athlete.” Soon, she would attend an informational meeting for the team with a friend. 44
Before long, the Edwardsville, Ill., native, who had never rowed in her life, would be competing in NCAA Division I athletics as a member of the University of Alabama’s newest varsity sport. The opportunity presented to Spohr is a unique one in the world of college athletics. It is the opportunity to not only take up a sport while in college, but compete in that sport as NCAA Division-I level. “In general, every collegiate rowing team in the United States relies on walk-ons more so than any other sport because most collegiate rowers didn’t know about the sport when they were in high school,” Alabama head coach Larry Davis said. In its first three seasons of varsity competition, the team raced out to a number of highly successful finishes, earning victories over crews from schools such as SMU, Notre
Dame, Cincinnati, UNC and Murray State with a group of girls whose interest in the sport the year before had been no more than participation on the club team or a brisk walk across the Quad. “The number of walk-on student-athletes in our program is going to change as our team develops. Each year we may rely a little less on walk-ons and it may become a little tougher for someone who’s never rowed before college to get a shot somewhere in their four years to be at the first boat level.” “The goal is to increase the quality level of our walk-ons,” Davis said. “The idea is to convince non-rowing former high school athletes to take a chance on the sport and, because they have a good background as an athlete they can make it as a rower.” After the informational meeting, Spohr
began racing for the University of Alabama on the novice team. As a sophomore, she moved up to the varsity and now she’s in her third year as a member of the varsity and she is part of the Crimson Tide’s very first four-year senior class. She loves showcasing the team’s progress at races, but it’s in practice, she says, where she sees her teammates struggle and fail, that she finds the real value of competition. “It’s kind of a ‘how did I get here’ thing,” she said. “They didn’t really find us; it was that moment that kind of happened that you can’t even think about how it happened.” “And I know it sounds cheesy,” she says, “but each day is a highlight.”
Rowing Terminology
Blade: The end of the oar which pulls the boat through the water. Bow: The forward end of the boat that crosses the finish line first; the rower in the seat nearest the forward end of a shell, who typically has a quick catch, stable technique and a shorter arc. Bucket Rigging: Two riggers on the same side next to each other instead of alternated. Coxswain (cox): Person who steers the shell from a seat located in the stern or a lying position in the bow. Ergs: Short for ergometer; individualized rowing simulators that help strength and conditioning. Lightweight: A crew on which each athlete weighs under a specific amount (130 pounds for women). Novice: A rower in the first year of collegiate competition. Regatta: The name of rowing events in which several crews compete.
Repechage: A second chance race for those crews which did not automatically advance to the finals of an event. Rigger: The part which attaches an oar to the shell. Run: The distance the shell moves during one stroke. Sculling: Type of rowing where each rower uses two oars. Shell: Boat used in the rowing races. It seats nine people for an Eight and five people for a Four, and ranges in length from 45 feet for a Four to 58 feet for an Eight. Sprints: Used in collegiate competition, this type of race features a course which is 2000 meters long, usually with four to six unmarked or buoyed lanes and a floating or staked start. Stern: The back of the boat; the end the rowers face during competitions.
Stroke: A complete cycle of moving the shell through the water; the rower who sits closest to the stern, looks directly at the coxswain in a stern-coxed boat and sets the rhythm for the shell.
Sweeping: Type of rowing where each rower uses one oar. Varsity: The collegiate rower who competes beyond the novice level.
8+ and 4+: Eights (8+) and fours (4+) are the most common collegiate competitions and the two events held at the NCAA Championships. The plus indicates a coxswain on board.

It is one of the best practice and competitive courses in the nation, giving the University of Alabama’s young rowing team an immediate boost. The Black Warrior River, where the Crimson Tide practices and competes, is blessed with high banks, long, protected straightaways, and minimal current which makes it a rower’s dream. The Tide also benefits from having the river largely to itself. The Tide is also fortunate that the river is dotted with prime viewing areas for dual meets and regattas, including The Park at Manderson Landing, which sits near the finish line of most of the Tide’s home events. With its multi-tiered slope down to
the edge of the river, the park is a natural ‘stadium’ for cheering on the Crimson Tide. Already endowed with one of the nation’s top competition and practice venues in the Black Warrior River, plans are underway to build a state-of-the-art boathouse for the University of Alabama Rowing program that will encompass everything the Crimson Tide needs to continue to move up through the ranks of collegiate rowing. Another step toward that new facility was taken when the land for the new boathouse was acquired in the offseason.
When completed, the planned boathouse is projected to include a walking bridge that will connect the facility to campus, as well as space for a restaurant, multiple bays for the Tide’s shells, as well as locker room, meetings spaces and coaches’ offices. The new boathouse will combine with the Tide’s already stellar athletic training, strength and conditioning and academic facilities in providing Alabama rowers with the best of all things.
