ALABAMA MEDIA RELATIONS The Alabama Athletic Media Relations Office is located on the ground level of Coleman Coliseum in room 170. MEDIA SERVICES Members of the media can obtain updated statistics as well as daily tournament results for the Crimson Tide women’s golf team during their season via e-mail and at Alabama’s official athletics website at www.rolltide.com. In addition, the Media Relations office will also provide the media with rosters and tee times for any event the Tide is scheduled to host. Credentials are usually not needed to cover an Alabama-hosted women’s golf event, but notification of your intent to cover is needed by the Media Relations Department. INTERNET Information about the University of Alabama’s athletics can be found on the world wide web on the Crimson Tide official athletics site: www.rolltide.com. For information about the Crimson Tide women’s golf program select that area from the main menu. Information on the web includes statistics, results, biographies and other historical information. TELEVISION The University of Alabama, through the Crimson Tide Sports Network (CTSN), offers a weekly 15-minute satellite feed consisting of interviews with coaches and athletes, taped video highlights and narrated tape package from September through May. Occasionally the women’s golf team will be featured in this package. Please call the media relations office for more details. During the season, the golf team’s progress will be covered each week on “The Crimson Tide This Week,” a 30-minute regional sports show. INTERVIEWS Head coach Mic Potter is available for interviews and can be reached through the Alabama sports information office, due to the extensive time the golf coaching staff spends outside on the course. Team practice sessions rotate times and locations daily depending on upcoming events and areas of practice emphasis. Because of this, we require you to make golf interview requests at least 24 hours in advance. All golf interviews must be arranged through Josh Maxson in the Media Relations office at 205-348-7496. FACILITIES As part of the Crimson Tradition Fund facility upgrades, Alabama’s home golf course — Ol’ Colony — has some brand new additions that only serve to turn the course into the Tide’s real home. Construction took place in 2004 on the Jerry Pate Golf Center, UA’s private practice facility and club house that includes coaches’ offices, a fully furnished locker room and a team room. Ol’ Colony, a course designed by former UA men’s golf standout Jerry Pate, serves as the team’s home course. In addition to its “home” course, the Alabama women’s golf team benefits from the opportunity of being able to access several golf courses in the Tuscaloosa area for practice, including NorthRiver Yacht Club and Indian Hills Country Club.

Alabama’s success on the golf course has carried over to the classroom. The Tide has had an impressive 13 golfers earn 25 Academic All-SEC honors over the past five seasons. During that time, five Alabama golfers have also garnered 12 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar honors. Four Tide golfers were selected as NGCA All-American Scholars in 2009 while three more earned the honor in 2010 with Helena Blomberg picking up her third award, Brooke Pancake her second and Jennifer Kirby her first. Pancake was also named the 2010 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. Laura Goodwin, who graduated in 2009, was also named a 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American while making four appearances on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. She was named to a NGCA All-American Scholar three times and has graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The Paul W. Bryant Academic Center gives golfers at Alabama all of the tools needed to excel in the classroom. The Bryant Center is a 55,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility that includes a 48-seat computer lab with brand new equipment along with 25 laptop computers that can be checked out for road trips. There are also math, English and writing labs as well as individual study rooms.

The Crimson Tide has enjoyed its most extensive individual success with five different players earning eight All-America honors over the past five seasons. Jenny Suh garnered All-America honors in 2006 and 2007 and Kathleen Ekey followed her with backto-back All-America accolades in 2008 and 2009 while then Camilla Lennarth accomplished the feat in 2009-10. Brooke Pancake and Jennifer Kirby were also recognized as an honorable mention All-Americans this past season. Potter has had 23 NGCA AllAmericans during his illustrious coaching career.
The Alabama women’s golf team has reached heights of success over the past five years never seen in the program’s history. That success peaked this past season when the Crimson Tide won the 2010 SEC Women’s Golf Championship and posted a school-best third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Mic Potter has built Alabama into a national contender. UA has advanced to the NCAA Championships in each of Potter’s five seasons after the Tide had qualified for the NCAA Championships field just once in the program’s history before his arrival. Alabama’s NCAA finishes have improved every year to a point where the Tide is considered one of the nation’s elite. Alabama is now a top 10 mainstay in the rankings and a top destination for the nation’s best.
Alabama added an important item to its trophy case last season, capturing the school’s first SEC Championship with a record-setting performance at the NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa. The Tide finished at 4-under-par 848, which is not only a school record but a SEC Championships record as well. The Tide has turned out a number of All-SEC performers over the past five seasons with four golfers earning seven first-team All-SEC honors, including two first-team members in Jennifer Kirby and Camilla Lennarth in 2010. The Tide also had two first-team members in 2009 with Lennarth and Kathleen Ekey. Alabama’s Kirby was also recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Year after setting the school mark for freshman scoring average (73.06) and finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships. UA has seen four golfers named to the SEC All-Freshman Team over the past three years, which gives the Tide a foundation for success. Tide coach Mic Potter also earned hardware in 2010, garnering the SEC Coach of the Year Award — the second such honor since he arrived at the Capstone.

ALABAMA
Coming off the best season in the history of Alabama women’s golf, even bigger things could be on the horizon for this year’s edition of the Crimson Tide. With a stellar trio of returning players at the top of the lineup, coupled with a bevy of solid veterans and some exciting newcomers, the Alabama women’s golf team is poised for great things in 2010-11. “It’s definitely the strongest lineup since I’ve been here,” head coach Mic Potter said. “Probably one of the best teams I’ve coached. I think in golf you can project that a little bit in that they are continuing to play at the level they have been and continuing to get better. “If you look at our performance last year with Camilla Lennarth, Jennifer Kirby and Brooke Pancake, we had three girls that were competitive every time they went out. All three of them were around the top of the leader board and had the opportunity to win tournaments. Then when you throw (incoming freshman) Stephanie Meadow in there, who has been on that level in junior tournaments, it looks like we have another girl that plays on the level that those three do.” Last season the Crimson Tide trio of Camilla Lennarth, Brooke Pancake and Jennifer Kirby garnered All-America honors while assistant coach Susan Rosenstiel was selected as the National Assistant Coach of the Year and Potter was named the East Region Coach of the Year. Alabama won its first SEC Championship, finished third at the NCAA Championships, had three All-Americans, two first-team All-SEC selections, the SEC Freshman of the Year (Kirby), the SEC Student-Athlete of the Year (Pancake), an NCAA Elite 88 winner (Pancake), captured two tournament titles and set school records for team season scoring average (293.63), singleround scoring (278), the 54-hole scoring record (848) and the 72-hole scoring record (1,157). “I think we’re at a level where our goals are to compete for the SEC Championship, a regional championship and the national championship,” Potter said. “To be honest, we don’t talk about that a whole lot. We talk about getting the job done as individuals on a shot-by-shot basis. Hopefully, we preached enough that the girls understand if we do that, and adhere to that, they are going to be in competition for a championship no matter what tournament we are in. “When we walk on the first tee of our first tournament, I expect us to have the same mindset that we do in the SEC Tournament. That is, this is the shot I have to hit, how do I hit it, what is my routine, then go to the next shot and do the same thing. Throughout the year that is what we preach and try to expound upon – your next shot is the only important one.” Lennarth, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, was named a second-team AllAmerican by the NGCA and chosen to the NGCA All-West Region team. The junior set Alabama’s single-season scoring-average mark of 72.59 in 2009-10 and finished tied for 13th at the NCAA Championships. It marked the second consecutive year the two-time first-team All-SEC pick has been selected to the NGCA All-America team, garnering honorable mention honors last season. Pancake was selected for a special honor as the NCAA recognized her with its Elite 88 Award for women’s golf. The NCAA Elite 88 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships. Pancake finished tied for 12th at the NCAA Championships with a 1-under-par total of
287, while maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average in business during her first two years at the University of Alabama. A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., she was also selected honorable mention All-American by Golfweek. Kirby, a sophomore from Paris, Ontario, Canada, was named to the honorable mention All-America team after a record-setting season at the Capstone. She is the ninth Alabama women’s golfer to earn All-America honors, but the first freshman to accomplish the feat. Kirby broke the freshman scoring record at Alabama, eclipsing Pancake’s 2008-09 mark of 74.06 by a full stroke, finishing with a 73.06 stroke average. The Tide also features senior Courtney Harter who won the first tournament she ever played in for Alabama, taking top honors at the 2007 Wildcat Fall Invitational with a season-best score of 213 (-3). She is the only current player to have won an individual title at a collegiate tournament for the Tide. Incoming freshman Stephanie Meadow, who hails from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, and is the seventh-ranked junior in the world in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index, looks to make an immediate contribution upon her arrival to the Capstone as well. “Right now we have a critical mass of girls who believe in each other and like each other and get along and have a lot of fun,” Potter said. “But when we go on the golf course there is nothing more they want than to beat everybody on our team. They are able to separate those two things, it is amazing. I keep thinking this has got to end, it’s too good to be true, but hopefully we have leaders on our team that will perpetuate that attitude as we go along and move forward. They all want to win; they all want to beat everybody on our team, to beat everybody on all the other teams.” Over the summer, Kirby and Pancake teamed together to finish second at the Hooters Collegiate Team Championship in Dahlenoga, Ga. Additionally, Kirby, Pancake and Meadow each advanced to the match play round of the prestigious U.S. Women’s Amateur with Kirby making it all the way to the semifinals. It is believed she is the first golfer in UA program history to accomplish that feat. Lennarth played for the victorious Swedish national team in the European Ladies Team Championship in Cartagena, Spain, in July. She was the medalist in the stroke play portion of the event, and then played a huge role in helping her team claim the championship, winning her match in 19 holes as the Swedish team beat Spain, 4-3. “Our goal is to compete for SEC and national championships and in order to do that we have to have the best players,” Potter said. “Recruiting is really the lifeblood of any college golf program, but I like to think we do as good a job or better in developing those players when they get here. If you look at our players’ improvements in stroke average and competitively their finishes in tournaments, we do a pretty good job at that as well. “You also have to do well in school. We demand that they are in class, demand that they are meeting with their advisors and their tutors and doing the best job that they can. One of our goals is to win the highest GPA award in women’s sports. We have two angles we have to attack and it keeps our players busy. You have the best four years of your life, but you have to work hard during it.”

Entering his sixth season at the helm of the Alabama women’s golf program, and his 29th overall in college golf, head coach Mic Potter has already established his own legacy. Potter, who came to the Capstone after a Hall-of-Fame career at Furman, led the Tide to its second NCAA Championship appearance in program history in his first year at Alabama and repeated the feat in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, reaffirming his status as one of the prominent coaches in women’s collegiate golf. His reclamation project in Tuscaloosa is one of the most impressive turnarounds in collegiate golf history. The honors continue to pile up for Potter, who helped the Crimson Tide develop into a national power in the ultra-competitive SEC. The veteran coach won his 11th Conference Coach of the Year award and his second in the SEC in 2010 after leading the Crimson Tide to the school’s first SEC title in women’s golf. He was also named the NGCA East Region Coach of the Year. The 2010 SEC Championship for Potter’s team was a springboard for the
8
school’s best NCAA Championships finish, a third-place showing, just four strokes off a national championship. UA also captured a team win at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The Tide also had three players finish in the top 15 individually at NCAAs, with freshman Jennifer Kirby tied for seventh, Brooke Pancake 12th and Camilla Lennarth tied for 13th. That trio garnered All-America honors as well with Lennarth earning second-team honors while Kirby and Pancake were named honorable mention selections. Lennarth and Kirby were also first-team All-SEC selections with Kirby being named the league’s Freshman of the Year. Pancake was a second-team All-SEC selection and the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year while earning the NCAA Elite 88 Award at the NCAA Championships as the player in the field with the highest grade point average (4.0). Potter’s 2009-10 team also set several school records. Lennarth set a new single-season scoring record with a 72.59 average and Kirby broke the freshman scoring record with a 73.06 average, shattering the year-old mark
ALABAMA
of 74.06 set by Pancake in 2008-09. The team set a new 54-hole scoring record with a 4-underpar 848 to clinch the SEC Championship. Two Alabama NCAA scoring records also fell with the Tide posting a 5-over-par 1,157 over 72 holes at the NCAA Championships on the Dye Course at Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., and Kirby’s individual 72-hole scoring mark of 4-under-par 284. Potter’s 2008-09 team was a fixture in the top 10 nationally. The Crimson Tide finished the year 11th at the NCAA Championships and were ranked eighth nationally in the NGCA Coaches’ Poll and seventh in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. The Tide captured their fifth tournament victory under Potter’s guidance in 2009 at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate. Alabama also finished tied for second at the SEC Championships and second at the NCAA East Regional. UA had two players, Kathleen Ekey and Lennarth, earn first-team All-SEC honors in 2009 while Pancake was selected to the league’s AllFreshman Team and awarded second-team AllSEC recognition. Potter again produced All-Americans with Ekey and Lennarth garnering honorable mention accolades. In 2007, Potter helped two-time AllSEC performer Jenny Suh leave as an All-American. Potter followed that up when Ekey earned All-American honors in just her first season at Alabama in 2008. Ekey broke Suh’s school-record single-season scoring average by posting a 73.30. Ekey, Lennarth and Pancake all earned NGCA All-East Region honors as well in 2009. The 2007-08 season saw Alabama put together its then-most successful season. The Crimson Tide earned its third straight berth to the postseason and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation - a school record. Alabama won three tournaments on the season, including the Crimson Tide Classic in record breaking fashion. Alabama turned in a schoolrecord 54-hole score of 861 (-3) at the Ol’ Colony
GOLF
Golf Complex. UA shot a final round score of 279 (-9), also a school record to wrap up the Crimson Tide Classic. Five Tide golfers finished in the top 10 in the tournament to lead Alabama to a 42-stroke victory over runner-up LSU at the par-72, 6,033 yard Jerry Pate designed course. Ekey shot a school record and women’s course record score of 65 (-7) to finish with a 54-hole score of 203 (-13) to win the tournament. At the NCAA Championships Potter led Alabama to its second-best result in school history. The Crimson Tide placed 12th overall and again improved on the previous year’s results - something Alabama has accomplished each season under Potter. The Crimson Tide also earned tournament titles at the Wildcat Fall Invitational with a score of 889 and at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. After the Classic, Sarah Sturm was named the Golf World Player of the Week. The legendary coach made an impact from the start. In his first season, Potter led his team to a tournament championship in his very first outing by winning Alabama’s own UA-Ann Rhoads Invitational in early September. The team set a school record that spring by shooting a 290 at the LSU/Cleveland Classic in March, and recorded two top-five finishes in the spring season. After qualifying for the East regional, the Crimson Tide put together an unlikely postseason run by defeating Virginia in a playoff to advance to the school’s second-ever NCAA Championship. Looking back on that resume, it comes as no surprise that Potter had his first Tide team competing for a national championship. On June 17, 2005, the University of Alabama named 1994 NGCA Hall of Fame honoree Potter as its new women’s golf coach. By doing so, the Crimson Tide added one of the most illustrious names in women’s golf to its already rich golf heritage. Potter, one of the most experienced and suc-
cessful coaches, has one of the most outstanding resumes in the nation, having guided Furman, a school competing in the Southern Conference, to national prominence in a long career with the Paladins. A 1994 National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame inductee, Potter spent 23 years coaching the Furman women’s team, including 10 years during which he served as the Paladins’ Director of Intercollegiate Golf. During his two-decade tenure with the Paladins, Potter guided Furman to 15 NCAA Championship berths and six top-10 national finishes, including an NCAA runner-up finish in 1987. He has yet to coach a season in which his team has not reached NCAA Regional competition, a streak dating back to 1993, the first season in which the Regional format was established. Potter’s coaching accomplishments stand alone as an indication of the abilities of the 55year old mentor. In addition to these outstanding achievements, his players have recorded astounding success, at both the intercollegiate level and in the professional ranks. The ability to build and maintain a program are certainly among Potter’s strengths when considering the amazing run of success he had throughout his career at Furman. Potter took the school, with an enrollment of about 2,500 students, in to the upper tier of women’s golf schools, leading the Paladins to unprecedented heights. Potter was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year eight times and led his Furman teams to 36 tournament titles while his Tide teams have captured seven tournament wins, which put him third among all active women’s golf coaches. To put that remarkable statistic in perspective, the Alabama women’s golf program had won 19 team titles through the beginning of the 2005-06 season, a span of 31 years. The Paladins won 10 Southern Conference Championships since the tournament’s inception in 1994, including the 2004-05 championship.

MICHELLE DILTZ
Strength & Conditioning Assistant Coach
He has coached 23 NGCA All-Americans, 18 NGCA All-Scholar Team selections, 38 All-Southern Conference selections, four players to seven first-team All-SEC awards, 12 conference players of the year and five conference freshmen of the year. One of the most important standards of success for any coach in major collegiate athletics is his or her ability to place players in the professional ranks while guiding them to a degree. Measuring Potter by these standards again places him among the very best in the nation. In 2004, Potter had seven of his former pupils on the LPGA tour, more than any other college coach from one school. In fact, only four schools: Arizona, Arizona State, Florida and Texas, had more than seven athletes on the LPGA player list in 2004. More importantly, each of the seven players coached by Potter had earned a degree. In the exceedingly competitive LPGA atmosphere, Potter’s former players have had long, successful careers in professional golf. Through the end of the 2004 season, former Potter pupils had amassed over 65 seasons on tour and over $8.5 million in career earnings. Leading that group is former Furman standout and Paladin Hallof-Famer Dottie Pepper. Pepper had an illustrious LPGA career, winning 17 events, including the 1992 and 1999 Kraft Nabisco Championships. She earned over $5 million in career winnings before ending her 20-year professional career in 2003. By any standard, Mic Potter has proven to be one of the best women’s golf coaches in the nation for more than two decades. He has built a successful program and maintained that by recruiting and cultivating talented players who advance to the professional ranks and obtain their degrees. A 1977 graduate of Cortland State University, Potter majored in physical education while earning four varsity letters: three in soccer and one in golf. He is married to the former Kim O’Branski of Ithaca, N.Y. The couple has two sons, Ryan and Corey.

Head coach Mic Potter is aided at the Capstone by assistant coach Susan Rosenstiel, who is entering her eighth season on the Crimson Tide staff. A former collegiate golfer, she joined the Alabama coaching staff in the fall of 2003. Rosenstiel’s efforts in Tuscaloosa were honored following the 2010 season as the National Golf Coaches Association recognized her as National Assistant Coach of the Year. She brings her vast and diversified experience in women’s collegiate golf to the Tide’s program that has shown unmatched growth during her time at the University. Her wealth of SEC playing and coaching experience includes a playing career at Tennessee and Florida, time on the staff at the University of Florida and as an assistant golf professional. Rosenstiel assists Potter in all facets of developing the Crimson Tide players and program, including instruction, course management, coordination of golf operations and recruiting. “Susan is a tremendous asset to this program,” head coach Mic Potter said. “Her experience as a player and her ability to re-
GOLF
late to our athletes make her an invaluable asset. I’m thankful to have a coach with her ability in the program.” She was also the tournament director for the 2010 SEC Championship at the NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa. Rosenstiel, formerly Susan Conger, began her collegiate playing career at the University of Tennessee, playing two seasons (1992-94) for the Lady Vols. She then transferred to the University of Florida where she finished her playing career (1994-97) as a Gator. Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.
several Southeastern Conference championships, winning titles in football, gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.
During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator.
In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.
Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business community. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.
Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of eight national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 2009) with the first coming as a player, the next six during his coaching career and the most recent during his tenure as director of athletics. As a player and coach, he was also part of 14 SEC championships and 27 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Alabama program to be a part of eight national championships.
The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically while enjoying an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.
His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama athletics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a future that holds great promise. Moore’s dedication to, and love of, the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his lifelong contributions to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System officially dedicated the facility formerly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility. Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced two national championships, the 2009 football title and the 2002 NCAA gymnastics championship, as well as

A 1963 graduate of The University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He and the late Mrs. Charlotte Moore have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.
During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as a graduate assistant under Coach Bryant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for six seasons (1965-70) before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82, serving as the Tide’s first offensive coordinator starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for four of Alabama’s national championship teams (1975, 1978, 1979 and 1992).

The Pate Golf Center is a private facility that is only utilized by the Alabama golf teams. The Pate Golf Center provides plenty of space for both the men’s and women’s teams with the ability to conduct full practice sessions during inclement weather. It has six indoor hitting bays and two indoor putting surfaces. The Pate Golf Center is also equipped with state-of-the-art teaching tools, including the V1 Swing Analysis System and Trackman, which aides the coaching staff in ball flight analysis using doppler radar and club fitting. The locker rooms inside the Pate Golf Center have tour-sized lockers and all of the amenities while the lounge area includes comfortable seating and a large-screen television. The Ol’ Colony Golf Course was named one of the “Top 5 Best New Public Courses in America” by Golf Digest in 2001 and Golfweek named it one of the top 50 municipal courses in America in 2010. The Jerry Pate-designed course is considered one of the best public courses in the nation. It’s a test for even the most advanced golfer with large bunkers, mature trees and numerous water hazards, including a 25-arce lake that challenges almost every shot. The practice range at the Pate Golf Center, which already provides the Crimson Tide golfers all of the practice components and tools needed to develop, recently finished an expansion and renovation. The practice facility includes a full practice range, putting greens, a chipping area and practice bunkers. The Jerry Pate Golf Center recently has added a new putting green with an expanded chipping and hitting area. The new chipping and hitting areas are complete with new bunkers and practice tees that allow players to hit their own golf balls up to 200 yards into six new target greens.

The University of Alabama women’s golf team won the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championship at the par 71, 6,057-yard NorthRiver Yacht Club. The Crimson Tide played host to the SEC Women’s Championships for just the second time in school history, and it was the first time the event was held in Tuscaloosa. The NorthRiver Yacht Club was the perfect host site for the SEC Championships and serves as a great course for the Tide to practice on throughout the season, providing a challenging test of golf in a beautiful setting. Two highly regarded golf course architects were involved in the shaping of the golf course at the NorthRiver Club. In 1978, the original Gary Player-designed Yacht course opened. Player routed the course through the beautiful undulating hills that grace the Tuscaloosa community called NorthRiver. In 1999, with the help of noted architect Bob Cupp, the course was redesigned, adding bentgrass greens and modernizing the bunkering to challenge the expert player while providing forgiveness to the player still new to the game. NorthRiver is truly a course suitable for every category from accomplished player to novice.

HISTORY OF THE TOURNAMENT Although it is not being played this season, the UA-Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate is an important aspect of the Crimson Tide program. The UA-Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate is a highly respected tournament that provides collegiate golf teams from around the country a chance to play against a deep field of teams on a challenging golf course. The 2007 Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate marked the fourth time in five years that the Tide has hosted the tournament named for UA contributor Ann Rhoads. For the first time in the event’s history, the tournament was held at the NorthRiver Yacht Club, a par-71 course in Tuscaloosa that was originally designed by famed golfer Gary Player. Alabama tied for seventh place in the competitive field that featured three of the nation’s top-10 teams at the time. The tournament was the first that the Tide had hosted since the fall of 2005. Helena Blomberg took sixth in the individual standings to lead the Tide. The Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate was also held in 2005, 2004 and 2003. The Crimson Tide won the 2005 Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate at the Ol’ Colony Golf Complex. The Tide also finished third in 2004 and fourth in the inaugural tournament in 2003.

A CLOSER LOOK AT NCAA WOMEN’S GOLF Much has changed in the way of collegiate golf since Alabama’s Eleanor Dudley won the first collegiate championship in 1941. Most notably, there are ELEANOR DUDLEY now women’s collegiate golf teams. Alabama formed First Women’s its first women’s team in 1974. Collegiate Champion In 1982, the NCAA, lured by the financial possibilities, finally got into the business of women’s athletics and hosting nationals, and that year there were two national team and individual titles with Tulsa winning both the AIAW and NCAA team titles. The NCAA took over the championships in 1983 and has hosted ever year since. Among the young women who make up the elite roster of national champions are some of the most famous names in professional golf. The medalist roll call includes Nancy Lopez who won the national collegiate title as a Tulsa golfer in 1976, San Jose State’s Patty Sheehan who won in 1980, and professional golf’s latest golden girl, Annika Sorenstam, a U.S. Open champion who won the NCAA title in 1991 as an Arizona golfer.
