FACILITIES

THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA TENNIS STADIUM Alabama tennis student-athletes have the privilege of playing in one of the finest facilities in the country, as The University of Alabama Tennis Stadium was one of nine winners of the 25th Annual USTA Facility Awards Program. The outdoor complex, built in 2004, features 12 hard courts with overhead seating for 2,000 spectators that faces all courts.

ROBERTA ALISON BAUMGARDNER TENNIS FACILITY

The $4.2-million facility houses a team lounge with a flat screen television and couches, a conference room, coaches’ offices, player locker rooms with private restrooms and showers, a full-service athletic training room and a concession stand with kitchen. The facility contains an elevator from the first level up to the seating area. Not only is this complex conducive to the highest level of competitive play, but it is also a terrific venue for hosting tournaments, with amenities for spectators and visiting teams.

ROBERTA ALISON BAUMGARDNER TENNIS FACILITY The Alabama tennis complex expanded in 2012 with the addition of the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility, which houses six indoor courts. Located adjacent to the outdoor stadium, the Baumgardner Tennis Facility features a lobby, restrooms and overhead seating above the courts in addition to seating at court level.

The addition of the indoor courts provides a facility for the teams to compete during inclement weather, while also benefitting Alabama when submitting bids to host events such as the NCAA Championship.

MAL M. MOORE A T H L E T I C S

D I R E C T O R

The University of Alabama’s director of athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure. Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports. During his tenure as director of athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have beneÀtted every Alabama student-athlete, coach and administrator. Throughout his career, Moore has worked with a diversiÀed Àeld of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business community. All of those experiences and relationships – in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when, as a permanent tribute to his lifelong contribution to the University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama ofÀcially dedicated the facility formerly known as the Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility. Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced national championship teams in football (2009, 2011 and 2012), gymnastics (2002, 2011 and 2012), women’s golf (2012) and softball (2012) and Southeastern Conference championships in football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s cross country and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis. In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore also has made a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee, and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum. Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of 10 national championship football teams as a player, coach and athletic director (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011 and 2012), 17 SEC championships, and 39 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of nine national football championships. In 2011, Moore was elected to the State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a coach and an administrator. The National Football Foundation then named Moore the recipient of its 2012 John L. Toner Award winner, which goes annually to the athletic director who has “demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football.” During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bryant’s graduate assistant in 1964 and then was defensive backÀeld coach for six seasons beginning in 1965 before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82, also serving as the Tide’s Àrst offensive coordinator starting in 1975. He returned as Alabama’s offensive coordinator under Gene Stallings from 1990-93 before moving into athletic administration. A 1963 graduate of the University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in sociology and a 1964 Master’s Degree in secondary education from the Capstone. A native of Dozier, Ala., he was married to the former Charlotte Davis of Tuscaloosa for 41 years before she passed away after a long illness in 2010. Moore has one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

Dr. Judith L. Bonner was named the 28th president of The University of Alabama on Nov. 1, 2012. Founded in 1831, the University is the state’s Áagship and a student-centered comprehensive research university. Dr. Bonner recently served as interim president from March 5 until Aug. 31, 2012. She was promoted to executive vice president and provost on April 1, 2006, after serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs since March 2003. During the decade she served as provost, the University underwent transformational change growing from 19,000 students in 2003 to more than 33,600 in 2012. Each year, the academic strength of the student body and the faculty exceeded the record set the previous year. Alabama’s athletics programs likewise have excelled in recent years with four teams winning national championships in 2011-2012. Athletics Director Mal Moore lauds Dr. Bonner’s commitment to athletics as well as academics. “Dr. Bonner has long been a supporter of Alabama athletics and I am excited about her leadership of our great University. We have a unique unity on our campus, a special bond between our athletics program and the University at-large. Dr. Bonner’s leadership will only serve to enhance that relationship and the unity that has been such a vital part of our athletics and academic success over these many years,” Moore said.

Dr. Bonner joined the faculty at The University of Alabama in 1981 as associate professor and head of the department of human nutrition and hospitality. She served as assistant academic vice president from 19851990 and as special assistant to the president from 1989-1991. Promoted to professor in 1988, she was named dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences in 1989 and held that position until 2003. Prior to coming to UA, she held faculty appointments in the department of pediatrics at UAB and the department of medical dietetics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Bonner earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Alabama and her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, all in nutrition. Her research, focused on nutritional needs of chronically ill children and on eating disorders, has resulted in numerous publications. Dr. Bonner is an active member of civic, scientiÀc and professional organizations. Among other awards and honors, her accolades include the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Ohio State University, the AHEA Leader Award and the award for Outstanding Dietitian for the state of Alabama.

JENNY MAINZ

HEAD COACH 16TH SEASON ALMA MATER: HOUSTON, 1991 Although entering her 16th season as head coach for The University of Alabama’s women’s tennis team, Jenny Mainz’s philosophy on coaching remains the same. The 2011-12 season was filled with many great accomplishments, and Mainz is confident that this coming season will be no different.

COACHING STAFF

“I’m not surprised at all by the success we’ve been able to achieve these past few seasons,â€? says Mainz. “Our team has been diligent and worked tirelessly to be able to have the foresight to recognize a problem and the fortitude to execute the solution. Our success definitely has been exciting though. We certainly are capable of winning an SEC championship and even a national championship in the coming years, and I think we’re really moving in the right direction to take those next steps.â€? It was evident Mainz was putting something special together early on in the fall of 2011 when the Tide went to the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships and swept both the singles and doubles titles, which granted Alabama a spot in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. That success continued on into dual match play, where the Tide went 15-5 in the regular season en route to capturing the 2011 SEC Western Division title. Alabama bettered its win total in 2012, capturing 18 overall victories, which helped the Tide earn the right to host the NCAA First and Second Rounds for the first time. The Tide also had a very noteworthy win at No. 5 Georgia, marking the program’s second win over the Bulldogs and ĂŤSTU TJODF "MBCBNB BMTP SFDPSEFE JUT ĂŤSTU TXFFQ PG 4PVUI $BSPMJOB JO QSPHSBN IJTUPSZ Mainz attributes her team’s recent success to its relentless attitudes and unwillingness to surrender. Though it would be easy for Mainz to take all of the credit herself, she is quick to stress that the success is a program-wide collaboration. “The success our program has experienced definitely has been a collective effort,â€? says Mainz. “Everyone, from the players, to the assistant coaches, to the trainers, to the student advisors, to the administrators, has played a role in helping us achieve this level of success. The head coach may lead the program, but it has to be done with the right people backing you up.â€?

16

And lead the program she has. Mainz was named the SEC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. In addition to her personal achievements, she also led the 2012 team to the program’s best finish in the SEC, coming in at No. 2 with a 10-1 record en route to its fourth SEC Western Division title and second straight. Mainz coached her second All-American and first /$"" &MJUF SFDJQJFOU BO BXBSE UIBU HPFT UP the player in the NCAA Championships with the highest overall GPA, in Mary Anne Macfarlane, along with Academic All-American Courtney McLane, who also was named the SEC ScholarAthlete of the Year for the second straight season. As proud as Mainz is of her team’s on-court success, she is equally as proud of their academic accomplishments. “Academic success is imperative. I always have stressed the importance of academics and I always tell my players that no one can ever take your education away from you. I hope to help produce student-athletes who are well equipped to make an impact beyond tennis, says Mainz. In order to help produce such well-rounded women, Mainz preaches three things to her players: having a blue-collar work ethic, striving for constant improvement, and working together as a team. “I always stress that you have to do the work day in and day out, says Mainz. “We work every day to make improvements. Every single one of our players has made strides during their time playing tennis for UA. We try to make sure that our environment is one where there are no superstars; everyone is on an equal plane. Mainz says that her players play for each other, as much as they play alongside each other. “We all are cooperative and supportive of each other, and above all, we have fun together, says Mainz. “Everyone on the team has a role to play, whether they’re in the number one position or the number eight position. I always tell the girls that we are an 8-cylinder machine, and we have to fire every time we go out. Looking to the future, Mainz is focused on continuing to recruit not only the best players, but also the right players. “Recruiting is one of the keys to any successful program. We continue to recruit players who have their best years of tennis in front of them - players who will work hard and display a championship mentality, says Mainz. Mainz adds that working to build a strong program is a process, and one that the team continues to build upon each season.

2012-13 ALABAMA WOMEN’S TENNIS

COACHES AND STAFF “What I really want to emphasize with our program is that everything we do is to help build and increase our level of success, says Mainz. “It’s all about playing together and getting better every day. Getting better may occur on the court, in the classroom, socially or within the community, but we always are striving to make improvements. Mainz, the only coach in Alabama history to take the Tide to six consecutive NCAA Championships and 10 overall, has seen nine of her teams finish in the top 40 in addition to 16 singles players and 11 doubles teams ranked in the final ITA polls. Her 2012 squad made history, wrapping up the season in the No. 11 spot, the highest final ranking for the program.

Mainz, once ranked in the top 10 nationally in doubles, was a three-year team captain for the University of Houston and a two-time All-Southwest Conference selection, garnering numerous accolades for her dedication to the game of tennis on the court. Off the court, she truly shined, earning GTE Academic All-America status and dean’s list honors while a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON ALMA MATER: HEIDELBERG, 2008 Max Norris begins his first season with the Alabama women’s tennis program, as he was named assistant coach on July 10, 2012. Norris joined the Crimson Tide after having spent the previous two seasons as a full-time volunteer assistant at the University of North Carolina. “We are thrilled to have Max join our Alabama family, says head coach Jenny Mainz. “Max brings some impressive experience to the Crimson Tide as he played an integral role in the success at UNC these past two seasons. His enthusiasm and passion for collegiate tennis are infectious. Max’s assiduous work ethic and spirited mentality certainly will impact our program. COACHING STAFF

Throughout his tenure in Chapel Hill, Norris helped guide the Tar Heels to a pair of top-10 finishes as UNC ranked fourth following the 2011 season and eighth at the conclusion of 2012. The Tar Heels advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in both seasons, winning the title in 2011. In two seasons, Norris saw UNC collect a combined 50 wins, while three student-athletes earned five ITA AllAmerica honors. He also served as co-director for the UNC ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit tournaments and served as an assistant director at the Carolina Tennis School summer camps and fall clinics. “I was very honored to be asked to join this program, said Norris upon arrival. “At the same time, I am prepared to help take this program to all new successes in the conference, regionally and nationally. I am also very excited about joining the Crimson Tide athletic department. The facilities, support staff and the culture that exists here is something that promotes winning in every sport and I am proud to be a part of it.

Following completion of his undergraduate degree, Norris spent two years at Ball State University where he earned a master’s degree in communication studies in 2010. Norris spent two years with the Ball State men’s tennis program, serving as a student assistant and volunteer coach and also taught undergraduate students, earning him the 2010 Graduate Student of the Year Award from the Department of Communication Studies. Jenny is a highly reputable person and coach. She has taken Alabama to heights it has never seen before, in an extremely tough conference, and she has done it the right way. The players are very hard workers and great people. From seeing them in competition, I know they compete hard and have big weapons in their games.
