William R. “Bill” Battle was named Director of Athletics at The University of Alabama on March 22, 2013, succeeding Mal Moore who had held the position since November, 1999. Battle joined the Crimson Tide after a career as a college football coach and entrepreneur that consistently was hallmarked by innovation and foresight. A native of Birmingham, Ala., Battle attended The University of Alabama on a football scholarship and enjoyed a successful playing career as a threeyear starter at end for the Crimson Tide under legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1960-62. Battle was a member of Bryant’s first national championship team at Alabama in 1961. Generally regarded as the team’s best end throughout his playing career, he came to Tuscaloosa after starring in three sports at Birmingham’s West End High School. An excellent student, Battle holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of Alabama and a master’s degree from The University of Oklahoma. He was an Academic All-SEC selection as a senior in 1962 and was selected to play in the Senior Bowl all-star game in Mobile, Ala., in January of 1963. Battle was named first team tight end and second team defensive end on The University of Alabama All-Decade Team of the 1960s. Battle entered the coaching profession as a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma in 1963 under famed head coach Bud Wilkinson. In 1964 and 1965, he was an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy while serving a two-year military tour. In 1966, Battle moved on to the University of Tennessee, where he served as an assistant coach under head coach Doug Dickey for four seasons (1966-69) until he was named head coach of the Volunteers in 1970. When he was named head coach, Battle was the youngest head coach in college football at the age of 28. During his seven-year tenure as the Tennessee head coach (1970-76), Battle’s teams went 59-22-2, finished three seasons ranked in the nation’s top 10 among five top-20 finishes and won four out of five bowl games. Battle’s Tennessee teams won 11 games once (1970) and at least 10 games in three different seasons (1970, 1971 and 1972). His first Tennessee team finished the season ranked fourth in both national polls. The 1971 team finished ninth in both national polls while his 1972 Tennessee squad had a final ranking of eighth by the Associated Press and 11th in the coaches poll.

Life on The University of Alabama campus is defined by opportunities. If you want to get involved, join one of more than 350 student organizations, help plan concerts and speaker series, participate in intramural teams or run for student government. If you enjoy the arts, you can take advantage of a rich and varied schedule of musical, dance and theatre performances, art galleries and exhibitions, lectures and readings by writers, poets and experts on every topic imaginable. You can enrich your knowledge of the state and University’s history by visiting one of UA’s fine museums, which house countless historical artifacts and offer hands-on exploration opportunities. From the architecture on campus to the landscaping, the University of Alabama campus is one of the most beautiful places in the state of Alabama. The Ferguson Center was completed in 1973. Plans at the time called for the building to be constructed over Woods Hall, but it was built slightly to the north thanks to a student campaign to save the art building. The Ferguson Center Game Room located on the first floor is the perfect place to unwind, test your skill at a video game, play a friendly game of pool or ping-pong, or enter a campus tournament. With seven pool tables, video games, a ping-pong table, computer gaming and televisions, the Game Room offers a fun escape from the daily pressures of college life. The University of Alabama offers a complete educational, cultural and social experience. Whatever your interests, you’ll find a group, an organization, an activity or a program that will appeal to you at UA. The newly expanded Student Recreation Center offers first-class recreation facilities for students, faculty and staff. It includes two multi-use gyms, nine multi-purpose courts, weight machines, 1/8-mile jogging track, extensive cardio area, locker rooms, indoor swimming pool, dry and steam saunas, 12 lighted tennis courts, four aerobics rooms, eight racquetball courts and a squash court—together encompassing more than 200,000 square feet. The facility’s outdoor aquatic area, which opened in the summer of 2003, features a lazy river, lap swim, large waterpark-type slide and plenty of deck space.

2013 Outlook
Outlook The Crimson Tide enters 2013 with hopes of improvement after an inconsistent 2012 season in which a freshman-heavy squad gained valuable experience and developed into a competitive team on the conference and regional levels. A total of 16 runners (8 men, 8 women) return for head coach Dan Waters and distance coach Adam Tribble. The veterans join 10 newcomers (4 men, 6 women) on a team that was 11th in both divisions at the 2012 SEC Championships. Among the newcomers, junior college transfer Matt Airola (American River CC, California) is expected to lead the men’s team while sophomore Katelyn Greenleaf, freshmen Hilary Stafford (London, Ontario) and Allison Gregg (Cedar Falls, Iowa) should provide a boost to the women’s squad. “We’re looking to take the next step for both teams this fall and I think we are ready to do that,” says head coach Dan Waters. “We were a heavily freshman team last year, and now those freshmen are sophomores. They have adapted to the college level and have trained well. We expect them to be ready to compete, not just hang on. We have a core group of runners on both teams that have the talent to compete when it truly counts, and we are hopeful that they will develop that talent as the season progresses.” Men’s Team In year three under the direction of coaches Waters and Tribble, the Alabama men’s team enters the 2013 season continuing to improve and build competitively as the Tide is on pace in its rebuilding of the program. The Alabama men had a 2012 season that is typical for a team made up of largely inexperienced runners on the college scene as they adjusted to the cumulative effects of a higher level of competition, the training that is involved as well as the longer races. The unit improved as the cross country season progressed and through the track season. Based on results from the spring and summer, Waters and Tribble are optimistic that their young runners are ready to move up the ladder this season. “There’s talent there, no question,” Waters says. “But it takes time. We will improve this season; it’s just a matter of how much. That depends on their maturity. Can we stay focused? Can we have our best races when it counts the most? Coach Tribble is going to have them ready to go for the championship portion of the season. That gives me confidence that we can build on the success we saw on the track in the spring.” Airola is a former California junior college cross country champion and the team’s most versatile distance athlete, and he will be looked to for leadership and the ability to help his younger teammates raise their level of performance. Among the sophomores, Parker Deuel has the ability to help the younger pack of runners raise their level. Deuel showed potential last season and during track season and Waters is hopeful that he can develop into a factor for the cross country team. “We’re still developing into what we want to be, but we can take a big step this year,” says Waters. “It will be interesting to see what role each guy steps into and how well they fill those roles, but we are expecting improvement this season.”

Alabama Cross Country
Waters’ thoughts on several of the Tide’s male runners: Matt Airola - “Matt is our most experience and versatile runner and he has been interesting to watch because he has become very competitive at this level in a very short time. He ran unattached last year on the track while he redshirted in the outdoor season, but he showed tremendous potential. He knows how to run cross country and there’s no telling what he can do. He has an amazing ability to hang with the pace of a race, and then move off the pack when the time is right. That will be a key factor in helping our younger runners in races.” Justin Ahalt - “Justin had a real promising outdoor season and he came back this fall in great shape. I think he is capable of some spectacular performances. I just hope he does that at the right time. I am challenging him to run 25:20 for 8k this season.”
Parker Deuel - “He has the ability to be the catalyst for our team because he is developing into a runner that can compete among the best in the league. He has the attitude and approach that can bring the rest of our team along. He’s crucial to our plans this season.”
Gil Walton - “Gil started out well for us last season and has potential. After some minor injuries during the summer, he is healthy and ready to compete. Gil is important to our team because of his ability to run at a competitive pace. We hope he will improve as the season progresses. If he does, that will really help our younger guys.”
Conner Thompson - “Conner’s a guy that is used to competing against elite runners. He had an exceptional high school career racing against some of the best kids in the nation and running times that show he can be competitive in the SEC. He’s an athlete whose best days are ahead of him. We’re excited about his potential. He can handle hard training better than most athletes his age and has fit in well quickly with our team.”
Rebecca Stover - “Rebecca had a good season on the track running the steeplechase and really developed a lot last year. She has really transformed herself into a different athlete over the course of the last year. She has built off the training she did last year and lifts up everyone on the team when she raises her competitive level.”
“We have several women that are on pace to become a factor on the conference level and beyond,” says Waters. “Katelyn will lead the way for us again this year, but our other runners have shown enough potential to make me truly believe we have tremendous upside potential from top to bottom.”
Hilary Stafford - “Her high school times were among the best in the nation and she has tremendous upside in cross country. She’s a true cross country runner. She came in ready to compete for us after running a late summer racing season, so we expect her to step in and be a factor for us.”
Greenleaf had an excellent track season, after a cross country year in which she consistently led Alabama finishers in every meet and continued to improve as the meets rose in importance. Ficenec showed exceptional ability as an 800-meter runner during track season and has adjusted to cross country on the collegiate level. Stover showed consistent improvement last year and appears ready to step up to help lead the team. Panagiotou is a solid competitor with experience. Gregg and Stafford are seasoned cross country runners that figure to add punch to an already solid lineup. “The roles on our women’s team are pretty much set, so our identity is more defined on that team,” says Waters. “That factor alone puts our women’s team further along in developing into a contender.” Waters’ thoughts on several of the Tide’s female runners: Kimberley Ficenec - “Kimmy showed that she has tremendous potential on the track in the 800, and she made great progress in cross country last season and over this summer. She will make good progress this fall and will help us compete. She has become much more adept at the 6k distance and that will really help her development.”
2013 Outlook
outlook Women’s Team The Tide women made marked improvement over the course of the 2012 season, eventually finishing sixth at the NCAA South Region meet. Sophomore Katelyn Greenleaf led the way with a top-20 finish at the SEC Championships as a true freshman. Freshmen Hilary Stafford and Allison Gregg have the talent to develop into top collegiate runners with experience. While Meropi Panagiotou is the team’s move versatile distance talent, Waters and Tribble also expect improvement from Kimberley Ficenec, Rebecca Stover and Susie Kemper among others.
Schedule Alabama has a 2013 slate that will provide the team with a chance to compete with a variety of schools from around the nation. The Tide opens the 2013 season at the Samford Opener in Birmingham on August 31, and then travels to the Iowa Classic in Iowa City on September 13. Alabama travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Paul Short Invitational on October 5 before returning home for the first of two meets the Tide will host this season - the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa on October 18 and the NCAA South Regional Championships in Tuscaloosa on November 15. Both home meets will be run at the Harry Pritchett Running Course. The SEC Championships will be held on November 1 in Gainesville, Fla., hosted by the University of Florida. The NCAA Championships will be held in Terre Haute, Ind., on November 23.

Meropi Panagiotou - “Meropi’s a versatile distance runner who can do some great things for us. The most valuable thing she brings to our team right now is her potential to be a key runner in helping tighten up our running pack during races. She can help keep our scoring spread of runners 1 to 5 much tighter. That’s a valuable role to have on this team.”
Katelyn Greenleaf - “She had a really phenomenal freshman year where she improved dramatically over the course of the season. She has come into camp this summer in excellent shape and looks ready to lead our team. After coming in as a top20 finisher at SECs as a freshman, we have big hopes for her. She knows how good she is and is in excellent shape.”

Dan Waters Head Coach Third Year
CoachES/staff
Dan Waters enters his third season at the helm of the University of Alabama cross country and track and field programs. He was named the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at the University of Alabama on May 11, 2011, after seven extremely successful seasons as an assistant at Texas A&M. During his first season at the Capstone, Waters successfully merged the men’s and women’s teams into a single, unified program that helped forge a new team environment and identity for the Crimson Tide. Changing that long established culture brought renewed energy and excitement to the program and results followed on the track with three Alabama competitors earning AllAmerica honors during the indoor season, including Krystle Schade finishing as the runnerup in the women’s high jump. In the outdoor season, his team sent five student-athletes to the NCAA Championships with four coming home as All-Americans and Alexis Paine setting a school record in the pole vault (13-5 1/4). While serving as recruiting coordinator and distance coach for the Aggies under the tutelage of legendary A&M head coach Pat Henry, Waters was a key contributor to a coaching staff that led the Aggies to unprecedented success on the national scene. The Aggies won six NCAA national championships, including back-to-back-to-back men’s and women’s outdoor titles, the first proram to accomplish that feat. The Aggie women won eight consecutive Big 12 titles (four indoor, four outdoor) in a four-year span while the A&M men claimed their first Big 12 indoor title in 2001, the men’s first conference indoor title since a Southwest Conference team title in 1980. Both programs have been ranked No. 1 by the coaches poll over the past couple of years, both indoors and outdoors. One of the nation’s top distance coaches, Waters also served as the recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M and assisted the process of upgrading the program’s talent level to be

consistently competitive on the national level. His recruiting and coaching efforts were vital in the men and women each winning three consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011 as the second school to achieve the NCAA Championship doubledouble (LSU 1989-90) and the first to have both programs win three in a row. Recruiting classes coordinated by Waters at Texas A&M earned No. 1 rankings by Track & Field News. In 2009 the men’s and women’s recruiting classes were chosen the top recruiting classes in the nation by the monthly magazine, becoming the second school to earn that acclaim in the 15-year history of Track & Field News ranking collegiate classes. The Aggie women also enjoyed a three-year run as the No. 1 class, from 2007-09, becoming the first women’s program to achieve that. Known for his strong administrative and organizational skills, Waters has overseen the event management at championship events, including the 2009 and 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, 2009 Big 12 Indoor Championships, and 2003 SEC Cross Country Championships. In cross country, Waters earned the South Central Region Men’s Coach-of-the-Year honor in 2008 when Texas A&M won the team title during the regional meet and qualified for the NCAAs. It was the first time in 18 years that a team defeated powerhouse Arkansas for the region title. Waters also has qualified 16 individuals for the NCAA Cross Country Championships over the past 16 years. The regional team title the Aggie men claimed in 2008 was the school’s first since 2003 and only the sixth overall. It also marked the first time that a distance coach on Henry’s staff had qualified a cross country team for the NCAAs. Waters came to Texas A&M in August, 2004, after serving a three-year stint overseeing the distance program at the University of Georgia and earlier five years at Texas Christian in a similar capacity. During his stay in Athens, Ga., Waters led the Bulldogs men’s team to the program’s first appearance in the NCAA cross country championships, as well as a team victory at the NCAA South Regional Championships. At the conference level, the Georgia men placed second for the highest finish in school history, while the women’s team matched its highest finish with a runner-up effort. On the track, his distance runners broke seven school records. At TCU, Waters helped the Horned Frogs win four Western Athletic Conference team championships - two in indoor track and field, one in outdoor track and field, and one in cross country. The 2000 WAC cross country and indoor track crowns were the first team conference titles in TCU history. During his stay in Fort Worth, the Horned Frogs notched four top-four NCAA team finishes and TCU was ranked No. 1 nationally by Trackwire.com in 2001. His athletes at TCU included Khadevis Robinson, who won the 1998 NCAA 800 meter crown. Robinson is a two-time U.S. Champion
who competed in the 800 at the 2004 and 2012 Olympic Games. Waters began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Texas from 1995-96. Waters is married to the former Jennifer Miller. He received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Kansas in 1995. A standout runner for the Jayhawks, he was the 1992 Big Eight champion in the 800 meters and ran a leg on KU’s 1992 All-America indoor 3,200-meter relay. He was elected the Jayhawks’ team captain in 1993 and 1995, and was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1995.

Assistant Coach Third Year Adam Tribble enters his thir year on the University of Alabama track and field coaching staff, as an assistant coach overseeing the Crimson Tide’s distance runners.
Track & Field Coaching Staff
“When coach Waters talked to me about this position, it was obviously an incredible opportunity and I think Alabama is a great situation,” Tribble says. “There is a commitment to track and cross country that is very exciting and a great thing to be a part of. The opportunity to be able to come back into the SEC is something I’ve wanted to do, especially to a program like Alabama.” While at Georgia under Waters, Tribble was a two-year captain of the Bulldogs track and field team, and earned all-region honors in cross country. He finished 46th at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon. A 2002 graduate of Georgia with a degree in health and physical education, Tribble also received a graduate degree from Georgia in movement studies. In May of 2012, he married the former Meredith Crane, a former cross country and distance coach at the University of Mississippi.
CoachES/Staff
Adam Tribble
In his first season at Alabama, Tribble coached the women’s cross country squad to its highest finish at the NCAA Regional Championships since 1988. Prior to coming to Tuscaloosa, Tribble spent two seasons in the same role at Oregon State following stints at Arkansas and his alma mater, Georgia, where he was coached by current Alabama head coach Dan Waters. “I’ve always recognized Adam’s deep passion for the sport and he’s educated himself in the sport as well as anyone,” says Waters. “He has a fantastic relationship with distance runners and knows how to relate to them. Adam also brings a great level of organization and energy to our staff.” During his five seasons at Arkansas he helped coach the Razorbacks women’s team that won three straight SEC cross country championships and posted a pair of runner-up finishes. Arkansas never finished outside of the top 20 at the NCAA Championships under his watch and finished as high as fifth in 2006.

Why Alabama
Why Alabama At Alabama we offer a unique approach to building the total program with an approach geared toward helping each student-athlete reach their goals academically, athletically and in life after college. This unique athlete-centered process reaps benefits during the college years and beyond. Here are a few elements of that process.
ACADEMICS Alabama’s strong commitment to the academic success of its student-athletes is clear. The University offers a full-time Academic Advisement staff, mentoring and tutorial programs, and is a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. In 2011-12, the Crimson Tide’s more than 550 student-athletes averaged over a 3.0 grade point average for the 2012-13 academic year, including 51 that maintain a career GPA of 4.0. Overall seven teams posted cumulative GPAs above 3.5 for the year, marking the third year in a row that at least five teams have met that standard. Overall, 14 teams earned GPAs over 3.0 for the season. More than 100 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2011-12 academic year. The latest numbers find that Alabama graduates 70 percent of its student-athletes while the general student population graduates at rate of 67 percent.
ALABAMA’S HONORS COLLEGE Alabama’s unique Honors College believes in attracting the best of the best to do some of the most important work going on in our University. What does that look like on a daily basis? Changing the course of Parkinson’s research, raising the bar on cultural literacy, starting an art program in local schools—in general, supporting communities in need. Students in Honors College don’t come here just to sign up with one of our outstanding faculty members’ program of study – they come to discover their own path. Students partner with faculty to create something that fits, inspires and ultimately educates like nothing else. The Honors College at the University of Alabama is about getting the information and access you need to create a meaningful, purpose-filled life.
A TRADITION OF ATHLETICS SUCCESS
Profiles
Entering the 2013-14 academic year, Alabama athletics teams have won 24 national team championships, 89 individual NCAA titles and 82 SEC team championships. Crimson Tide athletes are no stranger to world-class competition as 118 Alabama athletes have competed in the Olympic Games. Alabama has won 15 national titles and 23 SEC Championships in football, more than any other SEC school. The Alabama women’s gymnastics team has won 6 national team championships, including consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012. Alabama had an unprecedented 4 teams win NCAA championships during the 2011-12 academic year (football, gymnastics, women’s golf and softball) and two more (football, men’s golf) in 2012-13.
COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE At Alabama, not only do we compete in the nation’s finest conference - the Southeastern Conference - but we also have the opportunity to run against some of the top schools in the nation each season. We host two home meets each season, in addition to several top meets leading up to the SEC and NCAA Championships. Those competitions provide an excellent base of experience leading to championshiplevel performances.
EXPOSURE The interest generated by Crimson Tide athletics teams provides immeasurable exposure for the University of Alabama as a whole while serving as a symbol of excellence for the state itself. During the 2012-13 athletics year, student-athletes participated in more than 1,200 interviews with news media and appeared on the cover of national magazines seven times.
COACHING STAFF Head coach Dan Waters has assembled a staff at Alabama that has been a part or more than 40 NCAA track and field national championships and has produced more than 30 NCAA individual champions. In cross country alone, Coach Waters brings an impressive body of work to the Crimson Tide as he has consistently led his teams from also-rans into championship contenders. At TCU, Waters led the Horned Frogs to their first cross country conference title ever in 2000. At Georgia, he led the Bulldogs to their highest SEC finishes ever their first NCAA South Regional titles. At Texas A&M, Waters led the Aggies to the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional title, breaking the 19-year dominance of perennial power Arkansas.
HARRY PRITCHETT RUNNING PARK Alabama cross country trains on a championship-level course throughout the year and will host the 2013 NCAA South Regional Championships in November. The Harry Pritchett Running Park has been the venue for the SEC Cross Country Championships as well as the NCAA South Regional Championships (most recently in 2011). The SEC Championships most recently were held at Harry Pritchett Running Park in 2000. The venue also hosted the SEC meet in 1972, 1979, 1988 and 2000. The running park can accommodate course lengths of 5,000, 6,000, 8,000 and 10,000 meters. The course is a flat to rolling all-grass surface with limited cart path crossings. The NCAA South Regional has been held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park four times (2001, 2004, 2009 and 2011).

Academic Excellence a n d t h e C r i m s o n Tid e
Records & History
At the University of Alabama, the goal for student-athlete is to be the best they can be, both athletically and academically, which is why head coach Dan Waters is just as proud of the success that the track and field and cross country teams earn in the classroom as he is of what his student-athletes accomplish out on the course and on the track. There has been much for Waters to be proud of as the cross country team has recently reached new heights in the classroom, both individually and as a team. The women’s team has earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors eight times in the past 11 years, by posting the highest team grade point average in the country in 2011 with a 3.88. That marked the third time in the last six years the Tide women had the highest team GPA in the nation. That year the Tide men earned All-Academic Team honors for the ninth time in 10 years. Individually in 2011, Leigh Gilmore and Nathan Corder both earned a place on the Capital One Academic All-America Team. It marked the first time that Alabama has had both a male and a female earn Academic All-America honors in the same year. It was also Corder’s third such honor in as many years. Overall, the track and field and cross country program has had five athletes earn the prestigious honor a total of nine times. Gilmore and Corder also earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships for their athletic and academic accomplishments. In 2012, a total of five UA cross country student-athletes were named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Eleven more cross country student-athletes were named to the SEC’s First-Year Academic Honor Roll for freshman or transfer students in their first academic year in the program. The recent success enjoyed by the cross country program was just part of the success story for the Alabama Athletics Department when it came to academic achievement.
38 Alabama Cross Country
As a department over the last two years, Crimson Tide teams have won six national championships (two in football, one each in gymnastics, men’s golf, women’s golf and softball) with equally impressive results in the academic realm. Just as The University of Alabama enjoyed a tremendous season in the athletic arena, the Crimson Tide’s student-athletes were just as impressive in the academic realm. Alabama’s more than 550 studentathletes averaged over a 3.0 grade point average for the 2012-13 academic year, including 51 that maintain a career GPA of 4.0. Overall seven teams posted cumulative GPAs above 3.5 for the year, marking the third year in a row that at least five teams have met that standard. Overall, 14 teams earned GPAs over 3.0 for the season. More than 100 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2012-13 academic year. The latest numbers find that Alabama graduates 70 percent of its student-athletes while the general student population graduates at a rate of 67 percent. There were 17 graduates on Alabama football’s roster when it won the 2012 national championship. The Tide set the BCS National Championship Game record in 2009 at 22. All together, the Crimson Tide’s last three national football championship teams (2009, 2011 and 2012) featured 60 players who had earned their degrees before the BCS Championship Game even got underway. The 2012 football squad also had the third highest graduation rate among schools in the final 2012 BCS top 10 and has posted the second highest graduation rate in the SEC each of the past four years. The Southeastern Conference led the nation in Capital One Academic All-American honors again this year and the Crimson Tide once again led the SEC, tallying seven honors overall, including a league-best five first-team honors. schools and first in the SEC when it comes to Academic All-American honors with 78. The Tide’s seven honors in 2013 also pushed Alabama to a total of 113 all-time, which places the Tide in the top-20 all-time among all NCAA schools and in the top 12 among Division I schools. Football All-American Barrett Jones led the way for the Crimson Tide in the classroom this year. A four-year starting offensive lineman, he was a part of three BCS national championship teams, playing three different positions. A team captain in 2012, he was a four-time Capital One Academic All-America selection - the first athlete in Alabama football history to accomplish that feat - and was named the 2012 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. Jones was also the 2012 recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is designed to recognize the best scholar-athlete in college football. Brooke Pancake, who closed out her tenure at the Capstone by leading Alabama to the 2012 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, capped her stellar career by earning the prestigious NCAA Top X award in January 2013. The award is given annually to the top 10 senior studentathletes among all NCAA sports, regardless of division or gender, for their accomplishments in athletics, academics and in the community. She is the 11th Alabama student-athlete and the eighth over the last decade to earn the honor, which is considered the highest individual accolade the NCAA bestows on a student-athlete. Kim Jacob (gymnastics), Cory Whitsett (women’s golf) and Emily Zabor (women’s tennis) earned the NCAA’s Elite 89 accolade during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAA Elite 89 is awarded to the athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average at each NCAA Championship. Alabama ranks second nationally in Elite 89 honors with 10 in the award’s first four years while Stanford leads the nation with 11. On a conference level, Barrett Jones was named the male 2012-13 Southeastern Conference H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earning a $15,000 postgraduate scholarship in the process. He is

Jones was also one of six Alabama student-athletes named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. He was joined by Kim Jacob (gymnastics), Daniil Proskura (men’s tennis), Cory Whitsett (men’s golf), Stephanie Meadows (women’s golf) and Antonia Foehse (women’s tennis). Alabama was also prolific when it came to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, earning the accolade 256 times during the 2012-13 academic year. The Crimson Tide had 42, 48 and 67 student-athletes named to the SEC Fall, Winter and Spring Academic Honor Rolls and 89 named to the FirstYear Academic Honor Roll. Alabama football had 38 players named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll in 2012, which added to the conference record 38 the Tide had in 2011 makes for a two-year total of 67. One of the secrets behind the academic success for Tide athletes is Alabama’s Center of Athletic Student Services (CASS). From the moment a recruit first walks on to campus to the moment an athlete graduates with diploma in hand, the academic services provided are outstanding. For the first year at the Capstone, freshmen and junior college transfers are required to attend nightly study halls. After that, attendance is based on the individual’s GPA and study needs. CASS is headed by Associate Athletics Director for Student Services Jon Dever. Dever is assisted by Heather Anders, track and field and cross country’s academic advisor, as well as Tom Buttram, Brenda Elliott, Stephanie Godfrey, Fern Hampton, Lance Walker, Lisa Patrick, Evan Cardwell, Molly Dowd, Tyler Roberts and Joy Burroughs. Joining this group are five interns and more than 60 part-time tutors. The entire operation is housed in the Bill Battle Academic Center located at Bryant Hall. The CASS staff works as a liaison between the Athletics Department, undergraduate divisions, and administrative office of the university. The staff offers career advice and counseling, makes sure all athletes are maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degrees and monitors academic eligibility. The advisors also secure tutors and schedule study sessions. All of these services begin with the recruit’s first visit. The advisors set up individual appointments within the department of the recruit’s area of study and accompany them to the meeting. They give the recruit a tour of the campus and go over services provided by CASS. The dedicated CASS staff can only give guidance and direction. Achievement is left in the hands of the student-athlete. If the athlete wishes to succeed in the classroom as they do in competition, then Alabama’s CASS will provide them with every opportunity to achieve their highest goals. The University of Alabama’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) score rose to an 85 in 2012, once again exceeding acceptable standards for completion of undergraduate studies nationally for the period covering student-athletes who attended the University during 2002-05, according to figures released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Of Alabama’s athletics programs in existence at the time, six – women’s golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball as well as men’s swimming and diving – achieved perfect scores of 100. Overall, eight Alabama programs recorded a GSR score of at least 90 and 12 were over 80. The Alabama women’s rowing program is not included in this survey as it did not become a scholarship sport at UA until 2006. The Crimson Tide’s GSR of 85 was second overall in the Southeastern Conference, just behind Vanderbilt. The Tide’s 2012 NCAA Champion softball and women’s golf teams both led the league with perfect GSR scores of 100 again. Alabama’s soccer, volleyball, women’s tennis and men’s swimming and diving teams also led the SEC with GSR scores of 100. The Tide’s two-time defending national champion football team ranks third in the SEC with a score of 75 following a six-point jump from the previous report. The Alabama men’s basketball, baseball and women’s swimming and diving teams were all third in the SEC with scores of 71, 77 and 92, respectively.

For decades, the University of Alabama men’s and women’s cross country teams have utilized several different practice areas - including its competition course, the Harry Pritchett Running Park. Built in 1959, and formerly known as the University Golf Course, it was named the Harry Pritchett Golf Course in 1980 and was known as such until November of 2003, when the course was converted exclusively for cross country use. In addition to playing host to the annual Crimson Classic event, the Harry Pritchett Running Park has been the venue for the SEC Cross Country Championships as well as the NCAA South Regional Championships (most recently in 2011) and will do so again this November when the Regional meet comes to Tuscaloosa. The SEC Championships most recently were held at Harry Pritchett Running Park in 2000, when the men finished second and the women were fifth. The venue also hosted the SEC meet in 1972, 1979, 1988 and 2000 (women’s SEC competition began in 1983). The Alabama men were second in 1972, fifth in 1979 and fourth in 1988, while the Crimson Tide women finished second in 1988. The Harry Pritchett Running Park last hosted the region championships in 2011. It also hosted in 2001, 2004 and 2009. The Alabama men won the regional title in 2001 and 2009, finishing eighth in 2004 and 16th in 2011. The Alabama women finished 16th in 2001, 15th in 2004, seventh in 2009 and sixth in 2011. This year’s meet is slated for Friday, November 15. The running park is able to accommodate course lengths of 5,000, 6,000, 8,000 and 10,000 meters. The course is a flat to rolling all-grass surface with limited cart path crossings.
