INTERVIEWS The coaching staff is available for interviews in person or by telephone by prior arrangement. Athletes may not be interviewed on meet day until postmeet interviews are granted. Interviews with Alabama rowers must be arranged through the Athletics Communications Office at (205) 348-6084. The best times for athlete interviews are either before or after practice at the UA Boathouse on the Black Warrior River. Interview requests should be made at least 24 hours in advance.

Alabama president dr. judy l. bonner
Dr. Judith L. Bonner was named the 28th president of The University of Alabama on November 1, 2012. Founded in 1831, the University is the state’s flagship and a student-centered comprehensive research university. Dr. Bonner served as interim president from March 5 until August 31, 2012. She was promoted to executive vice president and provost on April 1, 2006, after serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs since March 2003. During Dr. Bonner’s tenure as provost and president, the University underwent transformational change growing from just over 19,000 students in 2003 to more than 34,800 students in 2013. Each year, the academic strength of the student body and the faculty exceeded the record set the previous year. Under her leadership as president, the Shelby Science and Engineering Quad has been completed and plans to transform the Peter Bryce campus into a vibrant new academic area are underway. In addition, UA’s athletics programs have excelled in recent years with several teams winning national championships. Dr. Bonner joined the faculty at The University of Alabama in 1981 as associate professor and head of the department of human nutrition and hospitality. She served as assistant academic vice president from 1985-1990 and as special assistant to the president from 1989-1991. Promoted to professor in 1988, she was named dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences in 1989 and held that position until 2003. Prior to coming to UA, she held faculty appointments in the department of pediatrics at UAB and the department of medical dietetics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Bonner earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Alabama and her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, all in nutrition. Her research focused on nutritional needs of chronically ill children and on eating disorders, and has resulted in numerous publications. Dr. Bonner is an active member of civic, scientific and professional organizations. Among other awards and honors, her accolades include the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Ohio State University, the AHEA Leader Award and the award for Outstanding Dietitian for the state of Alabama.

Eight University of Alabama graduates have accepted Fulbright awards to study and teach abroad during 2014-2015. Two will be based in Malaysia; others will be in China, Germany, Indonesia, Macedonia, Spain and Turkey.

The Management Information Systems program at The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce is ranked No. 4 among public universities and No. 8 among all universities, according to the 2013 Bloomberg Businessweek rankings.

Enrollment at The University of Alabama reached a record high of 34,852 for fall 2013. The entering freshman class, at 6,478 students, is the largest in UA history and includes 1,768 students who had a 4.0 or higher high school grade point average.

The UA Libraries rank 79th out of 115 U.S. and Canadian university libraries qualifying for membership in the prestigious Association of Research Libraries. Over the last 10 years, the total number of visitors to the UA libraries has increased by 91.7 percent to more than 1.7 million for fiscal year 2012.

BILL BATTLE DIRECT O R O F AT H L ET IC S
William R. “Bill” Battle is in his second year as Director of Athletics at The University of Alabama. Battle took over the job on Friday, March 22, 2013, succeeding Mal Moore who had held the position since November, 1999. Battle joined the Crimson Tide after a career as a college football coach and entrepreneur that was consistently hallmarked by innovation and foresight. A native of Birmingham, Ala., Battle attended The University of Alabama on a football scholarship and enjoyed a successful playing career as a three-year starter at end for the Crimson Tide under legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1960-62. Battle was a member of Bryant’s first national championship team at Alabama in 1961. Generally regarded as the team’s best end throughout his playing career, Battle came to Tuscaloosa after starring in three sports at Birmingham’s West End High School. An excellent student, Battle holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of Alabama and a master’s degree from The University of Oklahoma. He was an Academic All-SEC selection as a senior in 1962 and was selected to play in the Senior Bowl all-star game in Mobile, Ala., in January of 1963. He was named first team tight end and second team defensive end on The University of Alabama All Decade Team of the 1960s. Battle entered the coaching profession as a graduate assistant at The University of Oklahoma in 1963 under famed head coach Bud Wilkinson. In 1964 and 1965, he served as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy while serving a two-year military tour. In 1966, he moved on to the University of Tennessee, where

he served as an assistant coach under head coach Doug Dickey for four seasons (1966-69) until he was named head coach of the Volunteers in 1970. When he was named head coach, Battle was the youngest head coach in college football at the age of 28. During his seven-year tenure as head coach (1970-76), Battle’s teams went 59-22-2, finished three seasons ranked in the nation’s top 10 among five top-20 finishes and won four out of five bowl games. Battle’s Tennessee teams won 11 games once (1970) and at least 10 games in three different seasons (1970, 1971 and 1972). His first Tennessee team finished the season ranked fourth in both national polls. His 1971 team finished ranked ninth in both national polls and the 1972 Tennessee squad finished ranked eighth by the Associated Press and 11th in the Coaches’ poll. Battle began a career in the private sector after his coaching career ended. He held various positions within Circle S Industries in Selma, Ala., and served as president of two different companies, as well as vice chairman of the Circle S Holding Company Board. During his six years at Circle S, the organization grew from two companies earning $12 million in annual sales to 10 companies earning $60 million. Battle founded The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) in 1981, and served as president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) until 2002. He also served as chairman of the board of Licensing Partners International (LPI), which was created in 2001 to represent the licensing interests of noncollegiate sports properties, as well as corporate and entertainment properties. A 1981 inductee into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Battle was inducted as the first member of the charter class of the National Collegiate Licensing Association Hall of Fame in 2000. He was the recipient of the 2005 Paul W. Bryant Alumni Athlete Award at The University of Alabama and was inducted into the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association
(LIMA) Hall of Fame in 2008. Battle received a National Football Foundation award in December 2008 for Outstanding Contributions to Amateur Football. In June 2010, Bill was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators’ (NACMA) Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. He currently serves on the boards of the Bryant-Jordan StudentAthlete Foundation, The University of Alabama A-Club Educational & Charitable Foundation, the Crimson Tide Foundation, and the National Football Foundation. Battle’s wife, Mary, is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Texas School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She earned a Master of Science in healthcare administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. For many years Mary worked in the healthcare industry both in the clinical setting and for healthcare corporations that developed and managed physician provider networks including the development of strategically significant relationships with payors and business and industry. Mary currently serves on the Arthritis Foundation National Board of Directors and is the chairperson of the Arthritis Foundation Leadership Council for the Birmingham market. She is also a member of the Volunteer Engagement Task Team for the Arthritis Foundation. In addition, Mary is an inaugural member of the UAB School of Medicine Board of Visitors and is active in fundraising activities for UAB that support research projects targeting more effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The Battles are part of UAB’s Stem Cell Institute Board and are both active in their support of UAB’s Department of Rheumatology. In their leisure time, the Battles enjoy life on their ranch in Georgia. Mary is an avid equestrian while Bill enjoys working on various projects around the ranch.

LARRY DAVIS Head Coach
9th Season
VIRGINIA, 1973 It’s obvious that Larry Davis, now in his ninth season as the Crimson Tide’s head rowing coach, with a true passion for the sport of rowing and a strong relationship with the city of Tuscaloosa, is doing exactly what he’s always wanted to. “I love the sport of rowing and I really have a commitment to the sport, the University and the city of Tuscaloosa,” Davis said. “It makes it easier to do this job when you have student-athletes who are hungry and want to achieve and have that same kind of approach to the sport that you do. I’ve been involved with rowing a long time and it makes coaching easier when you have a bunch of people around you who love the sport as much as you do.” Now in his 16th year in Tuscaloosa, Davis has been involved in the local rowing community for a vast majority of that time, still getting on the water himself on a regular basis. During that span, he has helped the sport grow and flourish, making the Tide one of the fastest rising teams on the national scene. “One of the things that I’ve learned over time is

that good things take time and you have to put them all in layers, build on the pace and keep building,” Davis said. “The University has been very good about giving us the tools we need on a step-by-step basis to achieve that goal.” It’s no easy task taking a club team and building it into a successful NCAA Division-I program, however six years down the road, Davis and his staff have much to be pleased with. “We want to be one of those sports that represents the University at the highest level,” Davis said. “I think everybody involved with the program feels that way.” Success has come early and often for Alabama rowing under Davis. In the program’s first year, the Tide earned top-5 finishes at many of the regattas it competed in and won a number of races in dual-meet competitions against established programs. At the Dad Vail College Championships, the Tide advanced to the semifinals in all of its races, unheard of for such an inexperienced squad. The next two seasons saw the Tide continue to make enormous strides, including a silver medal at the esteemed Head of the Charles Regatta when the Varsity 8+ grabbed second place in the women’s Club race. That spring, Alabama went to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships and came away with another silver medal in the Varsity 8+ race. In 2009, the Tide posted a top-10 finish at the Head of the Charles, bettering 35 other boats as well as advancing four boats to the finals of its first South/Central Sprint Championships. In 2010, led by the program’s first group of fourthyear seniors, Alabama earned another medal at the Head of the Charles when it took third in the Club 8+ race. The Tide also earned its first varsity gold medal at the SIRA Championships when the Varsity 4+ took top honors. The 2010 season also saw Alabama take another step in its development when it joined with eight other programs from across the country to make up Conference USA’s rowing contingent. “One of the things the team hadn’t had up to that point was the ability to chase a conference championship,” Davis said “It is a great motivator
throughout the year. Instead of just pushing along and seeing how we do, we have our sights set on specific teams and getting past them.” The 2011 season saw the Tide take a huge step forward, starting with another top-10 finish at the Head of the Charles, followed by several outstanding performances in the spring. At the renowned San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama’s First Varsity 8+ took home the gold, winning the SeaWorld Cal Cup and earning Davis’ squad the inaugural Conference USA Boat of the Week honor as well as the Row2K.com Crew of the Week recognition. The Tide followed that up with a prodigious showing at the SIRA Championships, where Alabama not only repeated as the First Varsity 4+ champions but added gold in the First Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 8+ as well, giving UA a sweep of the open Varsity events. “Seeing what we’ve been able to accomplish up to this point in time is always a shot in the arm for me to keep excited about what’s going on,” Davis said. “We’re not where we want to be yet, but we keep making progress and the students we have associated with the program are buying into what it takes to be a top-level program.” Returning to the San Diego Crew Classic in 2012, Alabama again saw success with the First Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 8+ posting top-10 finishes. The Tide had a solid showing in its third Conference USA Championships, finishing just one point out of sixth place, taking seventh overall with 20 points. Under Davis’ direction, Tide rowers have not only seen success on the water but they have excelled in the classroom as well. Over the past eight years, Alabama rowers have earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award 65 times, including nine in 2013-14. In 2010, the Tide’s 11 CRCA ScholarAthlete Awards led the nation. On a conference level, Alabama’s rowers have been named to the Southeastern Conference Academic-Honor Roll 145 times, including 18 in the 2013-14 season. In its first five years as a member

of C-USA, Davis’ crew has turned in one of the conference’s best total with 10 spots on the league’s All-Academic team. During his tenure, Davis’ rowers have also made a marked difference in the community, leading the athletic department’s community service efforts in five of the past six years. That kind of success for such a young program is nothing short of astounding, but it is certainly in line with Davis’ goals when he took the job as Alabama’s inaugural head coach. “We have a plan and it’s an aggressive plan but there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s one we can fulfill,” Davis said. His plan includes steady, continuous improvement in all phases of the program each year. “Starting from almost scratch, to see it move along to this point, it’s very rewarding to see that kind of growth,” Davis said. “We need to realize that we still have a long way to go, but there’s so much opportunity here I can’t see us not achieving the kind of success we’re capable of.” This success has been part of his vision from day one, Feb. 2, 2006, when after an exhaustive search, the University’s athletics department named Davis its new rowing coach. “Larry is well-respected and connected in the rowing community and brings immediate respect to our program,” former Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore said. Davis’ past in rowing spans four decades, including more than 25 years as a coach. Before starting the Crimson Tide’s program, he coached the Alabama Crew Club starting in 1998. In addition to his duties with the club team, he has served as the Director of Wellness and Aquatics at the YMCA of Tuscaloosa County. Prior to his time in Tuscaloosa, Davis spent 198193 at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he was head coach of the varsity crew and served as the school’s compliance officer. He led Marist to wins at the MAAC Championship Regatta and the New York State Small College Championships. He was also the head coach of the University of Alabama-Huntsville’s varsity crew from 1977-81. Davis also spent time with the United States National Team. In 1983, he was an assistant coach
for the U.S. Men’s Rowing team and later, in 1987, he served as team manager. In 1983, Team USA competed at the World Championships in Germany and the Pan American Games in Venezuela, with the men’s 8+ winning gold at the Pan Am Games. The 1987 squad qualified for the World Championships in Denmark and the men’s 8+ once again won gold. “I’ve worked with a lot of different programs at a lot of different levels and I try to bring that experience to bear in everything I do, from putting together workouts, to talking with the rowers, to race day,” Davis said. As an athlete, he rowed for Washington-Lee High School in Virginia, where he was a member of the last Varsity 8+ to win gold at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. Davis continued his rowing career at the University of Virginia where he won numerous competitions, including the Mid-American Championship and the Southern Collegiate Rowing Association Championship. During his time in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers finaled at the Dad Vail Small College Championships three times, earning a bronze medal in 1971. Davis spent all his undergraduate and graduate years at Virginia, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1973, followed by a master’s in counseling in 1977. He is married to the former Vicki Barnes of Madison, Ala.

COACHES & STAFF Derek Tuten is in his eighth year as an assistant coach for the Alabama rowing team. While he is involved in all aspects of the program, his primary duties include coaching the novice rowers and serving as the program’s boatman/rigger, in charge of keeping the Tide’s boats in top condition. “Derek brings a wealth of rowing knowledge to our program,” Davis said. “As a Tuscaloosa native and an Alabama graduate, he knows the pride everyone has in the Crimson Tide and he knows the Alabama rowing community. His experience and knowledge help our student-athletes become acclimatized to all phases of the collegiate rowing experience.” Tuten served as head coach of the Alabama Crew Club prior to joining the Crimson Tide staff in the summer of 2007. As the club coach, he led the men to a win at the Head of the South and a finalist spot at the S.I.R.A. Championships.

“Having worked with coach Davis in the past with great success, I was excited about the opportunity to do so again at the Division I level,” Tuten said. “With the university’s dedication to athletics and academics, I know this program will succeed.” Tuten was a four-year member of the Alabama Crew Club while pursuing a psychology degree at Alabama. He also rowed for the Riverside Boat Club and Community Rowing in Boston, one of the nation’s top cities for competitive rowing. As a competitor, Tuten rowed at the U.S. Rowing National Championships as well as the C.R.A.S.H. – B Sprints World Indoor Championships. He won gold at the Southeastern Championships, Head of the South and Chattanooga Head Race during his career. Tuten also medaled at the Head of the Chattahoochee, Head of the Tennessee, Augusta Invitational, Tennessee Indoor Sprints, Atlanta Indoor Sprints and Clemson Sprints.

“Derek is an excellent teacher when it comes to rowing,” Davis said. “He brings a balance and patience to the program in terms of how he goes about his coaching. A keen observer, he takes what he sees and works individually with the student-athletes to teach them the skills they need to be successful.” A 1997 graduate of Central High School, Tuten coached the Alabama Crew Club for two years as an assistant under Davis before taking over the reins in 2006. During that period, the club was a consistent medalist, including earning gold at the S.I.R.A. Championships.
Megan Patrick is in her fourth year as an assistant coach with the Alabama rowing team. Her primary duties include serving as the Crimson Tide’s recruiting coordinator and coaching UA’s small boats. “Megan has experience at the highest level of rowing,” head coach Larry Davis said. “What’s more, after she completed her undergraduate degree, she had the interest and fortitude to go to Europe and spend time there not only continuing her education but coxing and coaching as well.” Prior to joining the Tide, Patrick was an intern coach at the University of Virginia, working with both the women’s and men’s rowing teams. She served as an assistant coach for the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club from 2006-09 where her record coaching the junior varsity was 2-1 for the Reserves Race. During that time, she was also the men’s and women’s coach for St. Hugh’s College Boat Club.

As a coxswain for Princeton University’s Heavyweight Men, Patrick was a three-time Eastern Sprints Champion between 1998-2001 and a silver medalist in 2000. She also earned two silver medals and a bronze at the IRAs during that time.
In 2001, she set a course record at the Eastern Sprints and competed in the final of the Ladies Challenge Plate at Henley Royal Regatta. Patrick went on to cox for Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University. She competed in the Isis-Goldie race in 2003 and was a member of the winning Women’s Blue Boat in 2004 and 2006, setting the Women’s Boat Race course record in 2006. “Megan had the chance to hone her skills and eye as a coach, in addition to be able to pick up a number of degrees, including her doctorate,” Davis said. “She gives our program a little more diversity and vision as to where we want to go.” As a five-time Henley Royal Regatta competitor, Patrick was a Ladies Challenge Plate finalist in 2001, a Britannia Cup semifinalist in 2003, a Remenham Cup quarterfinalist in 2004, a Temple Challenge Cup semifinalist in 2005, and a Henley Women’s Regatta champion in 2006. Patrick earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Princeton in 2001 and followed that with a pair of master’s degrees from Oxford, a master’s degree from Oxford Brookes, and a doctorate in education from Oxford in 2010.

TABITHA COLEMAN
Tabitha Coleman is in her first season as a graduate assistant coach with the Crimson Tide rowing staff. Coleman’s graduate assistant coaching career follows a year as a volunteer assistant in 2013-14 and a four-year career as an Alabama rower, inlcuding a senior-year stint as the Tide’s captain in 2012-13. Coleman’s stand-out performance on and off the water resulted in the Geneva, Ala. native being named to the 2013 Conference USA All-Academic team and First Team All-Conference USA. As a senior, Coleman was part of the bronzemedal-winning boat at the Head of the Charles, leading to the Tide’s Club 8+ to a third-place finish. In the classroom, Coleman regularly landed on the Dean’s list with an overall collegiate GPA of 3.66. During her rowing career, Coleman was named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association ScholarAthlete and was also part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Omicron Delta Kappa Society. Coleman’s academic accolades also included earning a spot on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and history. Outside of the classroom and rowing, Coleman spearheaded the 2012 Locks of Love event and also gave time to Habitat for Humanity, Al’s Pal’s, Read Across America and Hands on Tuscaloosa. In 2013, Coleman was named as a SEC Brad Davis Award Nominee for her outstanding efforts in community service.

Alabama Rowing officially opened its brand-new facilities on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the ribboncutting ceremony at Manderson Landing on the banks of the Black Warrior River. University President Dr. Judy Bonner and Director of Athletics Bill Battle were on hand as well as UA head coach Larry Davis, his staff and the current team. Victoria Croy, a member of the Crimson Tide’s inaugural team, represented the rowing alumni while captains Logan O’Neil and Courtney Atkinson along with senior Alyssa Drevenak represented the current team during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Following a short Q&A session with Davis, Croy and O’Neil and the ceremonial ribbon cutting, members of the current team were on hand for tours and answered questions about the facility to the multitude of fans and media members in attendance. The rowing program’s new facilities, designed by Ellis Architects and built by Harrison Construction, includes both The Boathouse at Manderson Landing as well as space at the Student Activity Center at the Presidential Village. The boathouse includes a floating dock and storage space for up to 54 shells of varying length. The Student Activity Center includes a 2,200-square-foot ergometer room, a 1,700-square-foot training space, locker rooms, athletic training room, meeting room and coaches’ offices.

Witt and Associate Athletics Director Marie Robbins were all on hand for the announcement that Alabama would add rowing as a varsity sport on the banks of the Black Warrior River in the fall of 2005.
A SHORT HISTORY OF ALABAMA ROWING The Black Warrior River was the scene for the historic inception of Crimson Tide rowing in October 2005. Director of Athletics Mal Moore, accompanied by former University President Robert E. Witt, stood on the river’s bank and announced the addition of rowing to the varsity lineup. With the scenic river behind them, rowing was going to the next level by becoming the 21st varsity sport at the University of Alabama.

For over 20-plus years, the sport of rowing had been growing in the Tuscaloosa community and with rowing’s popularity expanding on the national scene, it almost seemed as if a varsity team had not come soon enough. At the Capstone, club rowing began in 1987. Mainly a social club whose intentions were to go out and have fun, rowing at Alabama was no different than racquetball or rugby – among team members there was no previous rowing experience or real desire to succeed on the water. A few athletes with rowing experience joined the club in 1997, bringing with them a desire for change. The team adopted a more competitive attitude, spent more time practicing, and began expanding its fundraising efforts. In 1998, Larry Davis and wife, Vicki, moved to Tuscaloosa so she could take on a new job, leaving the former rowing coach looking for local work. When news of the University’s co-ed club rowing program’s need for a coach came to light, it seemed like a comfortable fit for the former University of Virginia rower. In January 1998, Davis was introduced as the team’s volunteer coach. “Like any club that has never been organized or supervised, there was a learning curve,” Davis said.

“Many of them had never been in a competitive sport before.” In the meantime, Marie Robbins and others in the athletics department at Alabama were having discussions about adding a 21st varsity sport. There were a number of candidates to fill the slot, but Robbins, the senior woman administrator, could not get past the stories she was hearing about a successful club that was making the best of its limited resources a little way up the Black Warrior River. “We started to delve into the issue about 2003,” Robbins said. “We began to talk about the opportunity to add an additional sport for women and provide additional participants the opportunity to compete.” With a program and sport already in mind, it seemed natural to Robbins and those at the University to elevate the program’s coach as well. Davis had turned rowing into a grassroots success on campus, building up a team of college students that was bringing home numerous medals, as well as backto-back points trophies at the Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga. “We looked at a lot of coaches internally and externally and ultimately at the end of the day we decided that coach Davis, in terms of local knowledge and familiarity with the club program and local operation of the river also had a wealth of collegiate experience under his belt,” Robbins said. “For coach [Mal] Moore, Larry’s loyalty to the university was helpful in that for 10 years he worked in addition to his paid job to volunteer and coach these young ladies who had come out for the club team.” Davis’ resume included head coaching jobs at Marist College and the University of AlabamaHuntsville as well as an assistant coaching spot on the 1983 U.S. Men’s National Rowing Team. As of
February 2006, Davis would be able to add one more school to that already impressive list. For a school with little experience in rowing a seasoned coach like Larry Davis was the obvious answer, Robbins said. “With Coach Davis, it’s local knowledge,” she said. “Having been here for 10 years helps those of us with less knowledge about the sport.”
STARTING OUT The transition from club to NCAA Division I proved challenging. The team was forced to move on without former club athletes who could not adjust to the commitment necessary to varsity-level rowing. Davis set up a challenging first-year schedule to help with the transition, including competitions against notable Division-I crews such as Notre Dame and Cincinnati as well as Murray State and Creighton, two schools that had previously beaten Alabama’s club team. “There was no fluff in the schedule, but there were some teams I thought we could beat,” Davis said. To the surprise of many in collegiate rowing, they did just that, defeating past foes Murray State and Creighton and coming from behind to beat the Bearcats of Cincinnati. Alabama medaled in all four events at the Head of the South Regatta, winning two of them. The Tide also beat schools such as North Carolina and Duke while giving Notre Dame a bit of a scare, holding close to them in a couple of events. Success came quickly to the first-year program despite unfamiliarity with the sport by both the athletes and the athletic department’s support staff. Rowing was a sport that Robbins and her colleagues had to learn the nuances of - things such as what equipment and facilities were necessary and how

The Tide earned five top-three finishes, including a pair of gold medals, at the Head of the Tennessee Regatta. Closing out the fall season, the novice squad performed exceptionally well, bringing home three medals - a bronze, silver and gold - at the Head of the Hooch Regatta. As the 2009 spring season got under way, Alabama made major strides, achieving success in meets against the likes of Clemson, Kansas State, Tennessee, North Carolina and Southern Methodist. The success against these established crews propelled the team to the postseason, earning two Grand Final berths at the SIRA Championship Regatta. As they continued through the postseason the team would see two crews head to the semifinals and one boat head to the petite finals at the Dad Vail Regatta. The girls advanced four crews to the finals of the South/Central Sprint Championships to cap off a very successful season. “This season was a transition where most of the club athletes were gone and we didn’t have as many seniors,” Davis said. “We increased our boat speed but we also toughened up our schedule. It was probably a little frustrating for the girls because we were going faster but we weren’t seeing some of the wins that we saw the year before because we were now rowing a lot of the top-20 teams in the United States.” Academically, nine rowers earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award and 24 UA rowers earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Milestone: One of the early milestones of the Crimson Tide Rowing team was winning a silver medal at the 2007 Head of the Charles Regatta which is one of the largest and most prestigious regattas in the world.
GROWING THE PROGRAM From joining Conference USA to enjoying their first gold medal at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, Alabama rowing’s fourth season was a season full of firsts. The first group of fourth-year seniors provided the Crimson Tide with the most experience at the highest level since the program’s start, which paid dividends right away with a bronze medal in the Club 8+ competition at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta early in the 2009 fall season. Alabama closed out the fall with a gold-medal sweep of the Secret City Regatta races. Alabama started the 2010 spring season off with a sweep, taking first place in all of its races in a home dual meet against Kansas State. The Tide secured another first by taking gold in the Varsity 4+ at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. At the 2010 South/Central Sprint Championships, Alabama earned a place in the finals of all its races. The South/Central Sprints also served as the first Conference USA Rowing Championships, marking the first time that Alabama participated in a conference event. The Tide finished sixth in C-USA while junior Laura Skaggs earned All-Conference USA honors. On the academic side of the ledger, Alabama was one of only two teams with three rowers on the Conference USA All-Academic Team as seniors Stacey Ogle, Bailey Sanders and Katie Spohr all came away with the honor. Other classroom accolades included 11 rowers, the most of any team in the nation, earning the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association ScholarAthlete Award. A program-best 27 Alabama rowers earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The Crimson Tide’s fifth season was a quantam leap forward, including top honors at a national regatta and winning a trio of gold medals from the SIRA Championships. “The 2010-11 season was a huge step forward for us,” Davis said. “It was big in terms of knowing what it takes to be competitive and then being able go out and execute it. I think in the past we might have had an idea of what it took to be successful, but that was the first time we were able to bring it all together and execute on a consistent basis.

many staff members to hire were among the initial challenges. “The biggest challenge is attitude,” Davis said. “When you’re dealing with walk-ons, I think a lot of people don’t understand the sport and how much hard work is involved. When you take somebody who is used to a club mentality, the varsity level is much more intense. It takes athletes who are driven, dedicated and committed. It takes a lot of hard work, focus, discipline and sacrifice. “What I’m asking the students to do is move a boat over a mile and a quarter distance as fast as they can, which means they’re running flat out for somewhere near eight minutes,” Davis said. “It’s enjoyable in one way, but it’s very painful. It’s not something your average person is going to want to do.” In the classroom, seven rowers earned 2007 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association ScholarAthlete Award, while nine earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The Tide followed up a successful first season spring with an extremely successful fall, opening the season with a pair of top-three finishes and a silvermedal finish all at the Head of the Charles Regatta. A gold-medal finish followed at the Hobbs Island Regatta in Huntsville. The team continued to excel in the spring of 2008, winning race after race during the dual-meet season, including a program-first sweep against UNC on their home water at Chapel Hill. Strong dual meets propelled Alabama into the 2008 postseason, where they earned a silver medal at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships and finished second overall at the SIRA Championships, a major accomplishment for such a young program. At the Dad Vail College Championships, Alabama continued to take big strides, reaching the Grand Final of the Novice 8+ race, taking fourth overall. Individually, Bryn Crawford became the first UA rower to earn a place on the Collegiate Coaches Rowing Association’s All-South Region team. In the classroom, nine rowers earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association ScholarAthlete Award while 16 were named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The Tide kept stride and continued its winning ways, carrying over into its third season, a season emblazoned in bronze, silver and gold. Success came early as the women earned a pair of bronze medals and seven top-10 finishes at the Chattanooga Head Race to open the season. In their second race of the season, the squad split up with the varsity crews heading to Cambridge Mass., for the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta and the novice crews heading to Huntsville, Ala., for the Hobbs Island Regatta. Both teams experienced great success with the varsity squad placing 10th, beating 35 other teams at one of the most competitive races, while

Alabama posted a huge win at the 2011 San Diego Crew Classic, an event billed as “America’s Premier Spring Regatta,” when its First Varsity 8+ boat took first place in its race, winning the SeaWorld Cal Cup. Alabama’s squad was among more than 4,000 rowers out on Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay. “We attacked a bit more than we did in the prelims and had a more aggressive race plan in finals,” Davis said after the race. “The Varsity 8+ dug down a little deeper and did what they were capable of doing. They made a really good move about midway through the race, pulling ahead, and really pushed through the third 500.” Following its success at the San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama’s Varsity 8+ was named the inaugural Conference USA Boat of the Week as well as Row2K. com’s Crew of the Week. Alabama followed up their 2010 Varsity 4+ SIRA Championships gold medal by repeating the feat in 2011, as well as bringing home gold in the Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ races, in the midst of rough weather conditions. “To sweep all the Varsity Open races is a really big step forward for our program,” Davis said after SIRAs. “There aren’t too many programs that have done that, so we were pretty happy with that.” The Tide was looking forward to carrying its success into the 2011 Conference USA Championships, but the April 27th tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa cut the academic semester and the rowing team’s season short. It also trimmed a dual meet with Clemson and the Tide’s second appearance at the C-USA Championships from Alabama’s schedule. “We were certainly disappointed to not be able to carry our success into the postseason, but it was still a very good year for us,” Davis said. “To be able to go and travel across the country and compete at a very high level against teams that are making it to the NCAAs, and to turn around and not only win one race but the three open championship races for varsity women at the SIRA Championships, shows that we learned how to execute in a high pressure situation at a high level.” Senior Alissa Kranz earned 2011 All-Conference USA honors and became the second Alabama rower to earn CRCA All-South Region honors. On the academic side of the ledger, Alabama became the only team to put three rowers on the Conference USA All-Academic Team each of the first two years of the program when senior Jessica Allaway, Kranz and junior Stephanie Varner came away with the honor in 2011. Other classroom accolades included eight rowers earning 2011 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award honors and 17 rowers earning a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Allaway also earned the 2011 Brad Davis SEC Community Service Award, which earned her a $3,000 postgraduate scholarship while the team received the athletic department’s community service award for the fourth year in a row. Despite having a team slowed by injuries, Alabama’s sixth season provided the young program a clinic in fighting through adversity. In their first race of the 2011-12 fall season, the Chattanooga Head Race, the Tide earned two medals, taking gold in the Novice 8+ race and silver in the First Varsity 8+ race. Alabama also medaled in the Club 8+ race at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta.

The 2012 spring season showed improvements, with the Novice 8+ boat taking first place at the Oak Ridge Invitational and the Second Varsity 8+ finishing second. Returning to the San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama again saw success with the First Varsity 8+ posting fifth- and sixth-place finishes and the Second Varsity 8+ posting a sixth-place finish. The Tide had a solid showing at the Conference USA Championships, finishing just one point out of sixth place to take seventh overall on Melton Hill Lake. Senior Leigh Ann Terch earned All-Conference USA honors. On the academic side, Alabama placed two rowers on the 2012 Conference USA All-Academic Team, marking the third year in a row that the Tide placed multiple athletes on the list. Senior Stephanie Varner earned her second consecutive unanimous selection while junior Canella Tinker made her debut. Other classroom accolades included five rowers earning the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award, while 17 Alabama rowers earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and 23 were named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. At the beginning of the 2012-13 season, in its seventh appearance at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Cambridge, Mass., Alabama won a bronze medal in First Varsity 8+. The Tide also won gold in the First Varsity 8+ at the 2012 Head of the Chattanooga and bronze at the 2012 Head of the Hooch. In the spring, the Tide won six total races at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational and posted wins in the First and Second Varsity 4+ on the Black Warrior River against West Virginia and Central Florida. In its first appearnace at the Knecht Cup Regatta, Alabama won the Second Novice 8+ while the Second Varsity 8+ took third. At the fourth Conference USA Championship, and the first with 11 teams, the Tide took 10th place. Senior Tabitha Coleman earned All-Conference USA honors. On the academic side, Coleman earned a place on the 2013 Conference USA All-Academic Team. Other classroom accolades included seven rowers earning the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award while 17 Alabama rowers earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and 28 were named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. With construction of the brand new facilities under way, the 2013-2014 season would be the final year in which Alabama Rowing launced from the north side of the Black Warrior River. The Tide opened its fall season on a strong note, earning first place finishes in the Collegiate 8+ and Novice 8+ at the Chattanooga Head Race. In total, 12 different boats would earn top ten finishes throughout the fall. In the spring, Alabama would take home a combined 34 top-three finishes at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, Knecht Cup Regatta and Dale England Cup. Senior Lynsey Marshall was named to the AllConference USA team at the league’s championship on May 17 and Ashley Allison was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team. In total, a program-record 14 team members earned the C-USA Commisionner’s Medal with 43 named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and 18 named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

ALABAMA MOVES TO THE BIG 12 Alabama rowing is one of three new affiliates that will compete under the Big 12 banner starting in 2015. Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee will be the three newest members of the conference, joining Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. Previously, all eight teams have competed in the Conference USA Championships for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia would compete in a separate five-team Big 12 Championship the week prior, though an automatic NCAA bid to the winner was not granted since it did not meet the six-team minimum. All eight teams will still compete in the Conference USA Championships this season, set for Saturday, May 17 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The format and structure of future Big 12 Championships will be announced at a later date.
LYSNEY MARSHALL NAMED ALL C-USA Alabama concluded the spring portion of its 2014 schedule at the C-USA Championships on Melton Hill Lake, as senior Lynsey Marshall earned All-Conference Honors. As a team, Alabama finished 11th overall. Oklahoma won the event with 62 points, earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. In the championship heats, Alabama placed second in the Varsity 4 Petitie Final, crossing the line in 7:52.46 as one of only two crews with a time under 7:55.00 in the heat. Alabama finished with a 7:07.3 mark in the Petite Final of the Second Varsity 8 and a 6:56.15 finish in the Petite Final of the Varsity 8. The Crimson Tide raced two boats in the Open 4 Petite Final, with the ‘Full Tilt’ A boat finishing in 8:06.05 while the B boat was close behind in 8:13.00.

It is one of the best practice and competitive courses in the nation, giving the University of Alabama’s young rowing team an immediate boost. The Black Warrior River, where the Crimson Tide practices and competes, features high banks, with long, protected straightaways and minimal current which makes it a rower’s dream. The Tide also benefits from having the river largely to itself. Alabama is also fortunate that the river is dotted with prime viewing areas for dual meets and regattas, including The Park at Manderson Landing, which sits near the finish line of most of the Tide’s home events. With its multi-tiered slope down to the edge of the river, the park is a natural ‘stadium’ for cheering on the Crimson Tide.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND THE CRIMSON TIDE For coach Larry Davis, the goal is simple. He wants his student-athletes to leave Alabama with medals around their neck and a diploma under their arm. Success, by that criteria, has been immediate for the rowing program. “One thing that we have laid as a foundation for this program is to be the absolute best in all areas, athletically and academically,” Davis said. Giving credence to that statement is the fact that in 2010, Alabama led the nation in Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Awards, with a program-high 11 Crimson Tide rowers earning the honor, tying UA with Brown University for the national lead. “To lead the nation in this award speaks volumes about the commitment placed on academics at the University of Alabama,” Davis said. “It also shows that as we improve on the water, our dedication to academics hasn’t wavered in the slightest.” To earn CRCA honors, a rower must hold a 3.5 grade point average for her career, be at least a sophomore in eligibility and have competed in 75 percent of the team’s spring races. In Alabama’s seven-year history as an NCAA Division I program, 31 Tide rowers have earned a total of 56 CRCA Scholar Athlete honors. On a conference level, Alabama’s rowers have been named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll 126 times, including an amazing 27 who made the list in 2010. In 2009, Stacey Ogle became the first Tide rower to earn a place on the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large second team, an award that spans several NCAA Division I sports. In 2012, Alabama earned two spots on the 15-member Conference USA All-Academic Team, marking the third year in a row that the Tide placed multiple athletes on the list. Over the award’s four-year history, Alabama has garnered nine selections.
To make the ballot for the C-USA all-academic team, a rower has to have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and is a key contributor to her team. The team is then selected by the league’s sports information directors for rowing. In the four-year history of the award, two UA rowers have been unanimous C-USA All-Academic squad selections - Katie Spohr in 2010 and Stephanie Varner in 2012. Varner also became the first Alabama rower to earn a place on the C-USA All-Academic Team more than once, earning her second consecutive nod as a senior in 2012. Spohr, Ogle and Bailey Sanders were named to the inaugural C-USA All-Academic squad as seniors in 2010. Alissa Kranz and Varner were named to the team in 2011. Varner was joined by Canella Tinker on the prestigious list in 2012 while Tabitha Coleman was the lastest honoree in 2013. While the Conference USA All-Academic Team is limited to rowers, Alabama athletes also earned recognition on two Conference USA-wide lists starting in 2012. A total of 11 UA rowers have earned the C-USA Commissioner’s Medal, which requires a 3.75 grade point average, while Tide rowers earned a place on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 GPA, 51 times. The secret behind the academic success for Tide student-athletes is really no secret at all. Alabama’s Center of Athletic Student Services, located in the stateof-the-art Bill Battle Academic Center, housed within Paul W. Bryant Hall, stands ready to help Tide studentathletes get the most out of their academic experience at one of the nation’s finest universities. CASS is headed by Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services Jon Dever. Dever is assisted by Tyler Roberts, rowing’s academic advisor, as well as Heather Anders, Jenny Sanders, Brenda Elliott, Fern Hampton, Lance Walker, Lisa Patrick,
Evan Cardwell, Molly Dowd, Stephanie Godfrey and Joy Burroughs. Joining this group are five interns and more than 60 part-time tutors. The entire operation is housed in Bryant Hall. The CASS staff works as a liaison between the athletics department, undergraduate divisions and the administrative offices of the University. The staff assists with class scheduling and registration, makes sure all athletes are maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degrees, monitors academic eligibility and provides career counseling. The advisors also secure tutors and schedule study sessions. From the moment a recruit first walks on to campus to the moment an athlete graduates with diploma in hand, the academic services provided are outstanding. For the first year at the Capstone, freshmen and junior college transfers are required to attend nightly study halls. After that, the attendance is based on the individual’s GPA and study needs. The dedicated CASS staff can only give guidance and direction. Achievement is left in the hands of the student-athlete. If an athlete wishes to succeed in the classroom then Alabama’s CASS will provide them with every opportunity to achieve the highest goals.
Conference when she received the 2011 Brad Davis SEC Community Service Award and the postgraduate scholarship that goes along with the award. Over the past six years, when the Alabama Athletics Department has singled out individual student-athletes for their work in the community, the rowing team has again led the way with 11 honorees in that span. In 2013, Emily Chadwell earned the recognition while Kendal Williamson earned the Crimson Tide’s Community Outreach Award in 2011. In 2010, when six UA studentathletes were honored, half that number - Tacoma Morrisey, Jessica Autrey and Erika Baranek - came from the rowing team. During the 2008-09 school year, 10 student-athletes were honored for their work in the community, including four rowers - Amy Allison, Autrey, Baranek and Katie Smith. In 2007-08, rowers Amy Alison and Katie Tippey were among the six Tide athletes honored with the Tide’s Community Outreach Award. Alabama rowers were extremely active in the Tuscaloosa community in the aftermath of the April 2011 tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa, leaving a trail of destruction that left the UA campus unscathed, but not the surrounding town. In October 2011, Logan O’Neil and her father, Tim, along with teammates Ashley Allison and Erika Baranek and coaches Davis, Megan Patrick and Derek Tuten, delivered more than 2,500 used elementary
books collected during the late spring and summer, to the Tuscaloosa County School System for use at the schools that were damaged and/or destroyed during tornado. In October 2012, team captain Tabitha Coleman and the rest of the Tide hosted a Locks of Love event. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The rowing team also takes part in Alabama Athletics Power of Pink initiative, which raises awareness in the fight against breast cancer, as well as a wide range of projects sponsored by the Alabama Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

From the day the first boat went on the river, Alabama rowing has dedicated itself to excellence in all things. Success and excellence have come swiftly during the program’s seven years. On the water, the Crimson Tide has made an immediate impact, climbing the ranks at the top regattas and sweeping several dual meets. In the classroom, Tide rowers already rank among the best, turning in outstanding grades in some of the University’s toughest majors. The Tide doesn’t stop there, though. In only seven years as a varsity team, the rowers have amassed the most community outreach hours of any team at the Capstone six times, including the 2013 season. The rowing program volunteers on a regular basis with a wide variety of organizations. Overall, rowers participated in over 5,000 hours over the last seven years. “As a program, it is important to us, that our student-athletes excel in all areas of the collegiate experience,” head coach Larry Davis said. “We want them to be at their best athletically and academically, but more than that, we want them to understand and embrace the concept of being active and positive members of their community. I am very pleased with how our ladies have responded to that challenge and the work they do in the University and Tuscaloosa communities.” Individually, Jessica Allaway collected the highest community service award offered by the Southeastern

The Bill Battle Academic Center at Paul W. Bryant Hall is the crown jewel in Alabama’s $125 million Crimson Tradition building initiative. Through the auspices of the Crimson Tradition Fund, Alabama took its former athletic dorm and converted it into a 55,000-square foot state-of-the-art facility that benefits the more than 500 Crimson Tide student-athletes. The building’s many amenities includes a 48-seat computer lab with new equipment. The computer lab also houses 25 laptop computers that can be checked out by student-athletes for use on road trips. There are math, English and writing labs as well as individual study rooms. The athletic academic advisor offices are also housed in the building, along with several study lounges, two 50-seat classrooms and a 140-seat classroom. The classrooms feature cutting edge teaching devices, including digital overhead projectors and “smart boards” that allow instructors to interact with students on the go. Throughout the building, there are 16 information stations that provide student-athletes with news about tutorials, study sessions and even practice schedules.
