The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure. Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports. During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator. Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business community. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century. His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama athletics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a future that holds great promise. Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trust-

8

ees of The University of Alabama officially dedicated the facility formerly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility. Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced two national championships, the 2009 football title and the 2002 NCAA gymnastics championship, as well as several Southeastern Conference championships, winning titles in football, gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bryant’s graduate assistant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for five years beginning in 1965 before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82 and serving as the Tide’s first offensive coordinator starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for Alabama’s last four national championship teams. A 1963 graduate of The University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He and the late Mrs. Charlotte Moore have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum. Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of eight national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 2009) with the first coming as a player, the next six during his coaching career and the last during his tenure as director of athletics. As a player and coach, he was also part of 14 SEC championships, and 27 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of eight national championships.

The University of Alabama women’s cross country squad is coming off its best SEC finish in nearly a decade with a fifth-place showing at last year’s meet. That finish showing was another building block in fifth-year head coach Randy Hasenbank’s development of the Crimson Tide program, and one that he feels this year’s team is capable of eclipsing. “We finished fifth last year in the SEC, but that was not our goal,” Hasenbank said. “We ran well that day, but we did not run great. Our goal was to get into the top three a year ago, and that’s what we’re focusing on this year.” With added experience in what has been a young group the last couple of years, the Tide expects to able to compete at a high level in the SEC this fall. This year’s squad has competed well in SEC meets, and now Hasenbank’s challenge to the team is to step up and deliver in the bigger events. “We had to build the roster, build some depth, get the training philosophy in place, get the athletes to buy in, and they’re all doing a real nice job,” Hasenbank said. “But we really need our stars to shine. We still don’t have margin for error where we can have a couple of girls take the day off. We have to hit on all cylinders in the big meets.” Hasenbank’s 2010 squad is one of his deepest to date as the Tide returns its top seven runners from the SEC and South Region Championships led by senior Haley Moody. Junior Kelsey Johnson was the Tide’s top performer at the SEC Championships last season, finishing 17th. Twin sisters Leigh and Sarah Gilmore are joined by fellow junior Sara Vaughn as the remaining upperclassmen. Johnson posted one of the most solid campaigns by any runner last season as she followed up a stellar freshman season by crossing the line first for the Tide in 6-of-7 races last season. Johnson picked up her second All-South honor with a 23rd-place finish at the South Region Championships. Moody finished second in both the SEC and Regional meets for the Tide after recovering from an injury during the 2008 season and wrapped up the year by taking 10th place in the 10,000 meters at the SEC Outdoor Championships. Vaughn will be looking to get back into the form that saw her advance to the NCAA meet during her freshman season after leading the Tide for the entire season. She capped that stellar freshman season by representing the United States in the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and helped the squad to a fifth-place finish while placing 64th individually in a field that featured the top under-19 runners in the world.

Although the Tide will be led by a core group of veterans, Hasenbank will look to a couple of sophomores in Katlyn Will and Birmingham native Elsbeth Denton to push the level of competition. Also bolstering that competition is a class of newcomers with impressive credentials that include a total of 19 state championships on the trail and track during their prep careers. “All of the roster spots have become very competitive,” Hasenbank said. “You’ve got to compete and you’ve got to compete well, because we have enough good runners behind you now to make you earn it.” “If you do your homework and do your training in the summer and fall, you’re going to be fit,” Hasenbank said. “You have to flip that switch when it’s time to compete and become a warrior and compete. There is a balancing act. You just go about your business day-to-day and know that when the time comes, you’ve got to be ready.” With an aggressive schedule that includes a trip to Notre Dame for a meet that traditionally features the top teams in the country, the Tide has scheduled opportunities to run against the nation’s best in hopes of earning points and advancing out of the NCAA South Region. The Tide won’t have to travel far for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championships with this year’s regional meet being held in Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 13. Advancing to the NCAA Championship is one of the goals Hasenbank’s program has been gradually advancing towards under his steady direction. “We take steps each year,” Hasenbank said. “We’ve gone from 10th to eight to seventh to fifth, and now we want to take the next step at the conference level and at the regional level.” While the strides the program has made are impressive, Hasenbank feels that this year’s deep, veteran squad will be ready in November to make the next leap toward those higher expectations. “I’m looking forward to the athletes maturing enough to be really confident out there to know that they can achieve the goals that we’re talking about.” Hasenbank said. “That’s basically what we’ve lined up, them having the confidence and maturity to do well when you know you’re ready to do well. It’s time for them to do well. Those are the expectations.”

“All of them have run well in SEC meets,” Hasenbank said of the group of veterans. “Now they need to learn to run great, compete well in big meets and compete well when it matters. I think they’re ready to do that.”
