« Offrons un logement étudiant pour un an en échange de services rendus au quartier. » Tel était l’énoncé du premier projet d’architecture de la promotion BA1 2012-2013. Le lieu d’implantation se situe en plein cœur de Bruxelles, place de la Chapelle. Il était demandé de pallier aux besoins du quartier et d’y répondre par l’ajout d’une activité complémentaire au logement. L’ensemble du bâti ne devait pas disposer de fondations étant donné le caractère éphémère de l’expérience. Suite à l’analyse du quartier (bâti ancien, à forte densité et sans espaces verts) il m’a paru essentiel d’offrir un lieu de partage ‘vert, où les habitants du quartier pourraient venir cultiver et échanger une série de plantes aromatiques et potagères. Ce lieu s’est traduit par une serre adossée au logement minimaliste mais ouvert, destiné à l’étudiant.

« Let’s offer a student residence for one year as compensation for services rendered to the neighbourhood ». That was the first bachelor’s architecture project statement for the 20122013 class. The location was set in the heart of Brussels, square of the Chapel. The ask was to cater for the area’s specific needs by including an additional activity to the house. The entire built didn’t require any foundations due to the transcience nature of the project. Following an analysis of the neighbourhood (old buildings, high density and absence of green spaces , it seemed essential to me to offer a place of « green sharing » where people could grow and exchange aromatic plants and vegetables. This was translated by a greenhouse, adjacent to a minimalistic but open student house.

Dans un contexte particulier, un talus à la végétation sauvage bordant un chemin de fer dans la commune bruxelloise de Schaerbeek ; il a été demandé d’implanter, par groupe, une série de logements disposant chacun d’un petit atelier à destination artisanale ou artistique. L’intérêt de travailler par groupe de 10 étudiants est de concevoir des habitats privés qui dispose d’un ‘paysage, à vocation publique. Le trottoir fut élargi et enrichi de divers dénivelé afin d’accueillir les œuvres des ateliers ainsi que de créer des espaces de rencontres. En aval du talus, le long du chemin de fer, une promenade privée agrémente les jardins des habitations afin de créer une unité, une solidarité au sein du projet et un mise à distance sécuritaire par rapport aux rails. L’essentiel du projet personnel est de créer un jeu sur les deminiveaux et des vues traversantes du côté du logement. L’atelier de photographie, est un grand espace ouvert destiné à l’exposition au rezde-chaussée, et à contrario, espace complètement clos au soussol destiné au développement.

In the particular context of a wild vegetation railway embankment in the Brussels “Schaerbeek” neighbourhood; we were asked to , in groups, to set-up a series of houses each containing a small manufacturing or artistic workshop. The value of working in groups of ten students is to conceive private buildings which benefit from a public ‘landscape,. The sidewalk was widened and improved with drops so that it can host workshop’s art pieces and create meeting spaces. On the downstream side of the embankment, next to the railway, a private promenade united the project also creating a more secured environment. In essence, the key of the project was to play with half-levels and crossed views within the housing part. The photography workshop is a large open-space on the ground floor and as opposed to a small enclosed space in the basement for the photo laboratory.

Les examens du premier quadrimestre de BA1 et BA2 sont clos par un workshop d’une durée de trois jours. Chaque année, le thème diffère afin de varier les réponses artistiques des étudiants. En 2012, le thème était le suivant : « des mots dans la ville » … ou l’écriture comme moyen d’expression et d’intervention urbaine. Notre groupe, constitué de 11 étudiants, décida de créer un prototype de mobilier urbain. Il consiste en un tabouret cylindrique dont la paroi est une tôle percée dont on ne distingue qu’une multitude de trous. Une fois l’obscurité tombée et la lumière interne allumée, le passant découvre des mots, des phrases qu’il entend tous les jours lors de ses déambulations…des mots pas toujours ‘roses, ; une réflexion sur nos comportements quotidiens. Second Prix.

The first bachelor year and second bachelor year’s first quarters end with a threeday workshop. Each year, the subjects differ so that students’ artistic responses vary. In 2012 the topic was: « words in the city »… or writing as a means of expression and urban intervention. Our group of 11 students decided to create a prototype of urban furniture. It is a cylindrical stool with a side made of drilled metallic sheet where only a multitude of holes can be distinguished. Once in darkness with the internal light on, passers-by can discover everyday words and phrases heared during their wandering…not always sweet words ; musings on our day-to-day behaviours. Second Prize.

Dans le cadre de la première partie « architecture et filiation », il a été demandé aux étudiants d’analyser différents projets de maison afin d’en dégager les caractéristiques propres et de les restituer sous formes d’une maquette et d’une analyse graphique synthétique qui servit de « matériau » de base pour les exercices de projet du semestre. L’analyse fut dirigée selon différents aspects tel que les habitants et la commande, les dispositifs spatiaux ou encore la structure. Ensuite, la maquette fut implémentée dans un paysage imaginaire, type Ishigami, aux côtés d’autres maisons de références et de parcelles vides destinées à accueillir les projets personnels ultérieurement réalisée. Mon groupe analysa la Parekh House de Charles Correa, une maison unifamiliale située à Ahmedabad, en Inde. Cette habitation, datant de la fin des années 60, préfigure l’architecture passive. En effet, elle utilise une série de dispositifs spatiaux en lien avec le climat local.

Parekh House analysis : In the framework of the first part « architecture and filiation », we were asked to analyse different housing projects in order to extricate their characteristics and render them in the form of a model and graphic synthetic analysis, that served as the base for the semester’s projects. The analysis was oriented according to various aspects such as by residents and order, space-based devices or the structure. The model was then implemented in an imaginary Ishigami type landscape, next to other reference houses and empty plots where the subsequent personal project would be placed. My team analysed Charles Correa’s Parekh House, a single-family home located in Ahmedabad, India. This late sixties’ house prefigures passive architecture. Indeed, it uses spacebased assets in conjunction with the local climate.

Un masterplan, inspiré des modèles environnants et des conditions paysagères, fut demandé à chaque groupement de parcelles. Par la suite, chacun des étudiants du groupe travailla de son côté sur la production de son habitation, tout en conservant un œil sur la production de ses voisins afin de maintenir un ensemble cohérent et harmonieux. La Roof House de Yui Tezuka + Takaharu inspira notre travail par son toit praticable et unitaire, et par la majorité de son programme au rez. Quant à la Gropius House de Walter Gropius, nous reprîmes le principe de soustractions de volumes à partir d’un parallélépipède rectangle et le jeu « d’exceptions » (volumes de géométries plus libres ajoutés, connectés à l’extérieur). A cela s’ajoute patios individuels, vues traversantes et lieu de rassemblement commun sur le toit (un potager). Notre groupe fut selectionné pour figurer dans «POLAROID» ; magazine de la faculté répertoriant les meilleurs projets du quadrimestre.

A master plan inspired by the surrounding references and landscape conditions was requested of each plot grouping. Each student of the group then worked on their own house’s production while keeping an eye on others’ work to maintain an harmonious and coherent set. Yui Tezuka + Takaharu’s Roof House inspired our work with its practicable and unitary roof, and with most parts of the programme on the ground floor. Concerning the Gropius House by Walter Gropius, we took the volume subtractions from a rectangular parallelepiped concept and the « exceptions » game (volume of more free shapes, connected to the outside). In addition, we used individual patios, crossed views and a gathering point on the roof (a vegetable garden). Our group has been selected to figure in «POLAROID» ; faculty’s review itemising semester’s best projects.

Le Square Jacques Brel, un endroit charnière entre deux mondes, se situe dans le centre de Bruxelles. Architecturalement, elle fait le lien entre la ville « traditionnelle » et la ville moderne composée de l’îlot à barre. Humainement, on retrouve une population socialement pauvre et en opposition, la foule de la rue Dansaert, haut lieu de la mode et des tendances bruxelloises. La nécessité de confronter ces antagonistes semble nécessaire et possible à travers la création d’équipements publics dans un espace public tel que celui-ci. Le lien social se créera à travers quatre pôles fonctionnels : un espace d’ateliers, de co-working, pour enfants en bas âge et encore un espace de convivialité mêlant restaurant et bar. Le tout coordonné par des espaces de services mutualisés (administration, parking, zone de déchargement). Le bâti se dresse sur la partie Nord du square afin de laisser la moitié de celui-ci appropriable et orienté plein sud. En retrait, une plaine de jeux s’insère entre les bâtiments. L’ensemble de l’édifice est lié par un auvent ajouré, comme une ligne de conduite guidant les passants d’un quartier à l’autre tout en les invitant à entre dans ces lieux de convivialités.

Jacques Brel Square, a hinge point between two worlds, is located in the heart of Brussels. From an architectural point of view, it is a link between the “traditional” city and the modern city composed of horizontal apartment buildings. From a human perspective, there is a socially poor population opposed to the masses of the Dansaert street, a fashion and trends’ hub in Brussels. Confronting both groups seems necessary and possible through the creation of public facilities in a such public space. The social link would be created trough four functional poles : workshop spaces, coworking spaces, a daycare and a restaurant/bar. All of it coordinated by mutualised services (administration, parking, off-loading area). The building stands on the North part of the square so that half of it is still appropriable and south oriented. A setback between the building hosts a children’s playground. The whole structure is connected by a kind of drilled porch guiding people to wander from one neighbourhood to another while inviting them to enter into those conviviality spaces.

La ville de Charleroi accueille des typologies d’îlots particulières : une densité bâtie faible de maisons en bordure et un centre de dimension importante pouvant, par exemple, contenir des infrastructures sportives ou encore industrielles, qui date de l’époque minière et prospère de la ville. D’un point de vue urbanistique, le lieu interroge sur « comment habiter en intérieur d’îlot ? », « quels rapports entretiennent les immeubles existants en circonférence et les nouveaux au sein de l’îlot ? », etc. Par groupe, un masterplan fut établi pour convenir un type d’habitat, les espaces publics, collectifs, etc. Nous avons décidés d’opter pour la création de 3 îlots (dans l’îlot) comprenant des habitats collectifs destinés aussi bien aux familles qu’aux personnes âgées seules. Chaque groupe d’appartements comprend des espaces collectifs invitant la rencontre avec les habitants de son quartier et à une plus petite échelle, ses voisins.Personnellement, les appartements furent travaillés à partir de blocs monolithiques dont des parties furent creusées ou extrudées ; de manière visible et dynamique en extérieur d’îlot et à l’intérieur, de façon à pouvoir retrouver une façade lisse en rapport avec la sérénité et un calme propre à la nature sauvage qui s’y déploie.

The city of Charleroi includes particular block typologies: low density of houses on the edge and a large centre which can contain sports infrastructure for example, or industrial ones that date from the mining and prosperous times. In an urbanistic way, the spot brings up questions about «how to live within a block?», «what is the relation between existing buildings on the edge and new ones in the heart of the block?», etc. Per group, a master plan was established to agree on a kind of habitat, public and collective spaces, etc. We decided to go for the creation of 3 blocks (within the main block) including collective dwellings for families as well as for the elderly. Each group of flats contains collective spaces inviting to encounter the district’s residents and on a smaller scale, one’s neighbours. Personally, the apartments were « crafted » from monolithic blocks of which parts were dug or extruded in an apparent and dynamic way on the external side of the block. On the internal side, it was done in way that the facade became plain again, in relation with the serenity and calmness inherent to the wild vegetation inside.

Afin d’améliorer la qualité de vie des étudiants en architecture sur leur campus, notre atelier travailla sur la réalisation d’installations/ mobiliers tentant de répondre à une demande concrète. En groupe, nous avons choisi la cafetaria que ne disposait que de peu de tables, souvent occupées et sales. Nous avons opté pour l’installation de tables hautes destinées au travail (laptop, etc) venant se fixer au colonnes existantes. Cela permet de ne pas toucher à l’environnement de l’école, bientôt en travaux, et de réutiliser les tables par après.

In the view of enhancing student’s life on the campus, our workshop has worked on installations/ furnitures that attempt to answer to real applications. By group, we have choosen the cafeteria because of its occuped and dirty tables. We opt for the installation of ‘bar, table made for working on laptops. It comes tighten with clamping fixations so that it doesn’t affect the school environnement, wich will change soon due to construction works. In this way, it is reutilisable aftewards.

Diane est une femme d’une soixantaine d’années : artiste pluridisciplinaire, femme engagée ayant eu des choix de vie radicaux. Suite à une vie où l’on profite du moment présent, Diane ne peut profiter d’une pension confortable et d’un logement décent à prix raisonnable. C’est pourquoi elle nous proposa de lui construire une tiny house (sorte de petite maison d’une vingtaine de mètres carré, habitable à l’année et relativement mobile ; type d’habitat léger issu de la crise du logement aux USA). Il s’agit de lier concept et habitabilité de manière à proposer un logement particulier mais agréable qui ne restera pas au stade du papier. Projet exposé au musée de Flagey (Bruxelles) dans le cadre de l’exposition des meilleurs projets des étudiants de l’année 2015 et au festival sur l’habitat léger à Louvain-La-Neuve.

Diane is a sixty years old woman : multidisciplinary artist, committed woman with radical life choices. After living it up, Diane can’t dispose of a comfy pension and an affordable decent housing. Here is the reason why she proposed us to build her tiny house (a kind of small house around twenty square meters, yearround livability, movable ; way of living issued from the US housing crisis). The point is to join concept and habitability in order to conceive a unique home but enjoyable that won’t remain on paper only. Work exhibited at Flagey’s museum (Brussels) as part of the exhibition about architecture students’ best works of the year 2015 and at the festival about mobile housing in Louvain-La-Neuve.
