HISTORY AND TECHNIQUE History is a consequent source of inspiration as it is present in our heritage, our landscapes, our culture and our savoir-faire. History allows us to wonder about a town, a place, a shape or a resource’s past, and what it can teach us. Architecture, across the ages is the oldest tell-tale sign. Technique is firstly a design tool which applies to drawing and implementation. It is the origin of practical work, the handling of material. À préciser (tant au niveau du coût que du respect des ressources locales.) Furthermore, we cannot ignore the fact that technique and history and bound together because with one another they engender innovation and allow evolution.

MASTER DEGREE PROJECT : RESURGENCE The project establishes a dialogue with the Slovenians landscapes’ strength, it evokes by its presence an echo between renewed contemporaneity and ancestral culture. Ljubljana, a town built around its river, the Ljubljanica, possesses a resource specific to the Slovenian identity : water. This project emphasizes its worth and develops itself with the environment pre-existing qualities. The project is looking for long-lasting ways for the town to evolve around water, and recreating a bond with its great landscape.

REINTEGRATION OF WATER TRANSPORT There is in the Slovenian identity, an ancient tradition of water transport. Its reintegration in the town and country planning was established to reinforce tourism around Ljubljana by offering a chance to discover the underrated beauty of the landscapes. Moreover, reintegrating the water transport allows the town to enrich itself economically thanks to the conveyance of agricultural goods between the heart of the town and the zones of production.

CITY SCALE « [...] Joze Plecknik architect [...] recognized the important role of the river and wanted to transform Ljubljana [...] to a noted and model city where the river was a paramount importance in the urban development. [...] Joze Plecnik showed that it’s possible to create a long pedestrian walk through littles interventions link between one another.» Traduction from : Le courrier de l’architecte.
AN AGRO-URBAN LANDSCAPE DRIVEN BY WATER The renewed urban promoted by the reintegration of the water transport is tied to the pre-existing qualities of the city center banks (European price of public space 2012). Its developing by stages around the island of Ljubljana on seven sites favourables to improvement and diversification of the capital city. On each of these sites is defined a adapted program and a volumetry on the place’s scale. Some, with consequent superficies, use easily irrigable lands near to riparian forest to reintroduce agriculture in town. This potential in urban production reinforce the landscape dialogue between town and countryside, humidify the soils, add value to the locals and offer a better living environment to the inhabitants, a very targeted characteristic nowadays. Those agro-urban spaces are connected with another by soft movements and this way extend the promenade to the outskirts of the town.

SITE SCALE : RESURGENCE In term of landscape, the resurgence is a reappearance in the open air of an underground reservoir or an underground river. This definition find echo in the project of using water as the principal element of public transports, fields irrigating and main attraction of the public space. Beyond that, the resurgence is as well synonymous of reappearance, a rediscovery that evokes the history of the project. Water’s history but also techniques’, natural principals’ pushed aside during last century that can find back a place in tomorrow’s world.

Establish yourself in connection. Alignment with the already existing assembly and the river.
Controlled use of the resources. Purification tank along the assembly and irrigation of the fields.
Management of the agricultural landscape. The fields possess different planting zones.
The assembly enhance the landscape’s qualities. Creation of a setting. Programmatic sequences; transversal link and light inflow.
Reinforce the program’s attractiveness. Opening towards the fields of the restaurant and the covered market. Plots created attract towards the halls. 18

To think a building like a promenade is to conceive the act of building in terms of relation. A long sequence of volumes links the town to the South shore, generates promenades that border the two blue axis: the river and the tanks, bringing the visitors closer to the water. A commercial track is established within the project. The water transport of agricultural , the restaurant and the market halls are effectively connected in an attractive dynamic. This proximity allow the user to be in touch with the production, the irrigation mechanism and the transport. The relation established sensitize the population to the use of the resources and have a durable impact on their everyday life. What’s more, it’s that the project offer a public space of quality, animated by the ponds, the cultivated lands and the build sequences. 19

WEST ELEVATION
EAST ELEVATION
The assembly rest upon a structural pedestal which welcomes the half underground parking lot and the tanks, slightly raising raising the height of the promenade for a better view on the cultivated lands. The rectangular archways of the base divulge the light in the basement and remind us of the ancients aqueducts, reviving with the history of the water transport. Despite this elevation, the levelling is lowet stay in symbiosis with the Ljubljanian heritage. The dark roof in shingle subtly play on the heights spreading the light inside, centring the view towards the East, the ponds and the fields. The mass of roof contrasts with the lightness of the metallic structure which simulate an effect of gravity and create a strong entity yet still aerial.
