A NEW TOPOGRAPHY OF THE EXHIBITION SPACE
MoMO Galerie is an artistic project, installed in the window of Mohamed Elloumi’s electrical supplies shop at 26 rue Beaurepaire 75010 Paris. By deploying exhibition projects in a shop window (1.20 wide x 1.80 m high), MoMo Gallerie will be pursuing a practice of constant interference, and questioning the topography of the traditional “white cube” exhibition space and what can or should be shown to the public. Each single piece shown in this permanent, 24/7 exhibition space will act as the portal and departure point for an exhibition continuing in digital space on the gallery’s website.
MOBILE GALLERY MoMo Galerie is not a sales tool but a putting into practice of the “co-intelligence of contraries” dear to Marcel Duchamp. ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is the first of the exhibition propositions it will install in this commercial “showcase”. MoMo Galerie’s focus is the interference between the artwork and the commercial space, achieved by the “hijacking” of window-shopping reflexes by a process of discovery. MoMo’s goal is to create an international artistic promotion tool and not – like an institution with a similar acronym – a mausoleum of minority culture. MoMo’s audience is crucial: its immediate environment (passers-by and local inhabitants) and the extended sphere of the global community.

THE EXHIBITION IS A CEREBRAL SPACE The exhibition is no longer restricted to the physical space available and its constraints (transport, loans, insurance, conservation), but in direct synergy with its environment. Each MoMo Galerie exhibition will be a collaboration, an invitation for an artist or curator to show, develop or defend a project or point of view. 26 rue Beaurepaire, 75010 Paris, will remain MoMo Galerie’s permanent, 24/7 base during its forays in other shop windows all over the world. This project would never have been possible without Mohamed Elloumi’s unfailing support. MoMO Galerie is supported by Influentculture and co-directed by Romaric Tisserand and Margherita Ratti.
WINDOW FOR CURATING ART PROJECTS
(Louise, a matter of life and death and happiness) MoMo’s first exhibition, “Stairway to Heaven (Louise, Life, Death, and maybe Happiness)” took shape in the spring. We chose Louise Bourgeois’ embroidered handkerchief, “I’VE BEEN TO HELL AND BACK AND LET ME TELL YOU IT WAS WONDERFUL”, pinned to the wall like a Byzantine icon, as the “flag” of a universal quest for happiness and love of life that culminated with the artist’s departure on 30 May. The title, ‘Stairway to Heaven’, is a dual, musical and cinematographic reference. In the legendary 1971 Led Zeppelin hit written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, “there’s a lady who’s sure that all that glitters is gold and she’s buying the stairway to heaven,” but at the end she’s told:“your stairway lies on the whispering wind…” In ‘A Matter of Life and Death’, first released in the USA in 1946 as ‘Stairway to Heaven’, an RAF pilot (David Niven) jumps from his burning plane without a parachute. A guardian angel with a French accent takes him away to heaven, from where he nostalgically contemplates the world he has just left. Then one morning he wakes up on a beach and continues his life on earth, falling in love with June (Kim Hunter), refusing to return to heaven and escaping his guardian angel. What still pushes us to chase after Lewis Caroll’s White Rabbit? Alice in Wonderland is the story of a world equal to our desires, of a childhood that submits to no one. A world in which logic and knowledge are obsolete, in which intuition still takes precedence, in which the passage from reality to fiction is the fertile ground for unbridled imagination. Artworks from Louise Bourgeois, Lewis Caroll, Frida Khalo, Jean Fouquet, Gus Van Sant, Martin Kippenberger, Cyprien Gaillard, Elvire Bonduelle, Jean-Luc Godard, Jim Jarmush, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Jenny Holzer, Douglas Gordon, Julia Chiang,Tracey Emin, Adam McEwen, Gillian Wearing, Scott King,Tania Bruguera, Sarah Lucas, Jane Hilton, Alexandre Arrechea, James Turrel, Meta Warrick Fuller, Hippolyte Bayard and on Kawara.
