We just started the school year.. and now we are already into March. Confusing! Confused? 2021 is not going to be like any other year. Covid is still with us and it will impact on this year’s learning - sorry, but ... We have to look at choices after highschool. What do I really want to do? What must I do to get there? We have some insights from people out there. Read on and get inspired on how to choose. Of course we have the usual stuff: movies, music, science, poem and much more. Good read! (and choose wisely)

Choices, choices … what to do? and how to do it? It might sound so simple. Just go with what you like. But it really is not so simple. As with everything else, it might just involve a little bit of planning. Of course interest and desire must drive the process, but it will also impact on what I choose now, in high-school. It becomes even more complicated because I should also start to know what I would like to do. That means being exposed to job-situations before I make a final choice. That also means I should look around and see what is out there. I have to know what ‘a job’ is. The overwhelming fear is of course that I choose something that turns out to not be my dream after all. Something I had never foreseen. Face it: we will never make good choices all the time. Sometimes, we make a choice that we have to reverse later in life. No worry! It happens. So go forward and make the right (or just better) choice next time. Read on and get a bit of guidance.

Choices, choices But what is for me? Maybe my personality will guide me? Oh wait, what do I like? High-school is in many ways a wonderful time. It teaches us to learn, but does not teach a particular skill (beyond learning) really. It gives us the at several topjob situastem-cells. It anything!

Does it then making choicis the combirealisation of be good at sure to certain subjects.

It is also very much a matter of YOU. What are your qualities and what is your personality like. Like if you are very shy, maybe a career as a public speaker is not the choice – LOL. So let us involve some guidance. I found some inspiration from here.

• What subjects have you enjoyed studying at school and beyond? Why? Is it because you like the person teaching you, or there’s something about that subject you can really relate to? • What subjects have you done well at, and why? • If you had to pick a favourite out of words, numbers, visuals and physical activities, which would it be? Could you see yourself in a job where your top choice formed a big part of what you do every day? They have links to a few personality tests. These are both fun and unusual in their thoroughness. Try! I did Colour Career Quiz (www.colorquiz.com/quiz.php) Here’s a fun one to start with. The Colour Quiz is an easy test that looks at your personality based on the colour you select. When you’re presented with a block of colours, select them in order of preference, choosing your favourites first. This isn’t a super-scientific test but it only takes a minute or two to complete! It also won’t tell you what careers you’d be good, but helps shine a light on what makes you stressed in the workplace and how to keep your cool. Colour psychology is a genuine thing – there’s even a Wikpedia article about it. My view: Fun! Wonder how accurate it is

Here are some more options (from here): Keirsey Temperament Sorter (here) The Keirsey Temperament Sorter has a boring name, but it’s actually fascinating stuff. Answer all the questions and you will get to understand your personality type and what kind of temperament (or basic nature) you have. There are four temperaments in the Keirsey Temperament Sorter: • Guardian (finding membership and belonging) • Artisan (finding freedom and action) • Idealist (finding meaning and unique identity) • Rational (finding knowledge and competence, or skilled ability) Each of these four temperaments has four separate flavours. You get a free profile description when you finish the test My view: Still waiting for the results O*NET Interests Profiler (here) This questionnaire of 60 questions is American. It’s a useful way to see where your career and work interests mostly lie out of these six areas:

• • • • • •

Realistic Investigative Social Enterprising Conventional Artistic

For each question, you’ll be asked how much you’d like to do an example activity, from “strongly like” to “strongly dislike”. From this, the interests profiler builds up a picture of what kind of work activities you’d most enjoy and be good at. Once you complete the test you’ll see careers listed for each of the six interests, and you’ll also be able to see how much preparation you’d need to do to get into those careers. My view: Fun! It is fast. I get the feeling it is spot-on. AND it has a lot of job choices as examples. Sokanu Career Test (here) This test takes about 30 minutes. It asks you to answer a bunch of questions about what you like and dislike, much like the test above. Then it gives you a free career personality profile. Why does it take so long, and ask so many questions? Because it’s trying to see how your interests match up to over 800 different careers! That means it’s worth doing, because it could really open you up to some career choices you never knew you’d be great at. My view: This is HUGE! This more than huge. But it is probably the most accurate of them all. Conclusion: worth it! Try!

Electric aircraft This is not science fiction. We have all seen electric cars by now. We know that the major car manufacturers are all going for electric cars. It means that the technology is maturing. Not only that, it is now possible to make electric cars as a normal business, a normal production. It is of course also about money (it always is). Electric motors are cheaper and easier to manufacture, but the battery developments have been the limiting factor. Not anymore! Oh yes: Norway has set a goal of all smaller commuter aircraft (up to 100 passengers) must be electric aircraft by 2040. The following is gleaned from BBC and from Wiki. Let us look at the battery. It is true that batteries are improving by the hour, but there is a long way to go. First of all, a battery must provide enough power to get the aircraft off

the ground. Then we have the challenge of range. If all the power has been used to get going, and there is nothing left for flying, it is pretty useless. There is a 45:1 ratio between the best lithium-ion battery and a typical jet fuel. In essence, jet fuel is still more efficient. Will it always be like this? Absolutely not. The little thing is that electric motors are more efficient (baked into the 45:1 ratio above). Tesla is on the forefront of battery developments. That is probably where we should look for the battery. Now we are getting to the propeller and the rest of the propulsion system. Electric motors are rather simple. They are also lightweight compared to a jet engine or a internal combustion engine. The engineering costs and the manufacture costs are far less. … and that means we are back to the real issue: money! If a commuter aircraft is required to carry 50 passengers not more than some 200300 km we have a business case within a reasonable time frame. Stats to support this: 45% of air routes fall within its 1,050 km range at 482 km/h, or 55% of airline flights according to Flightglobal’s Cirium data..

Electric aircraft - the f What do we see of actual production electric aircraft? Very few – for now. Eviation Alice: This is a real aircraft – soon. It caters for 9 passengers and 2 crew. It has three propellers (2 at the wing tips and one in the back). Insofar as electric motors are simpler, the fuselage and the seating is now vastly different. It just looks good! Zunum Aero: This is probably the typical start-up. Few people, no money but lots of dedication. It is a more traditional aircraft in many ways. It looks like a normal little airliner, with the engines in the back. However, these are not jet engines. These are ducted fans (like a propeller inside a casing!). These are powered by a battery pack but augmented by a traditional gas turbine. This turbine generates electricity, not propulsion. It was envisioned that the gas turbine would be swopped out for a better battery pack as these will becoming available. Unfortunately, this venture failed due to lack of funding. But they will be back! Heart Aerospace: (this is from here:)

future is already here This is a typical small commuter plane. It seats 19 passengers in its initial configuration. It is coming from Sweden and it is really representing a new way of thinking. Why do they believe they can have an up on the ‘big ones’? It is about consumers as well. The founder (Forslund) states that they can “compete on price, convenience, community noise and climate impact”. This is important! As consumers are interested in minimising climate impact, this may attract more people who wants to be responsible consumers. Price? Money! This might be a cheaper commuter plane that the traditional jet-powered ones. Convenience is a factor. As Forslund explains, the airline industry has operated with big airports (far outside the main city) where people had to travel to get onboard the flight to their destination. Here we have a commuter plane which can land on the typical municipal airport around the world (landing strip about 600 – 800 m). These are located all over and are typically very close to city centres. In essence: you go to the small airstrip, get on this small aircraft and go to where you want to go. No more changing flights or traveling to the airport. This is convenient and that might win the day – because the aircraft are basically there now!

My next book: “Train stati Let me quickly add to my bio as you may have seen it under contributors. I have been writing for Hola MaHigh-School for some time now. The most significant part is that I have been published! My first book “From an empty pride to a full price” is out there. I am an author in my own right. Now it is time for book number 2 – as other successful writers do. This one is about what happens when our world comes tumbling down. When the innocence of a good upbringing turns into ashes.

Train station to 213 Forever Street Marcia Ramodike

Here we have a young woman where everything is going fine. Childhood has been good and life is smiling at her. Then the horrible day when her mother has a stroke and is admitted to hospital. When her brother comes to fetch her from school.

Now the train journey with so many happy memories are a painful thing for her. And she knows that life is going to change. Little does she know how much, little does she know that nothing will ever be the same.

ion to 213 Forever Street” Yes, it is a bit of a journey into despair, but trust me. There is always a silver lining. Somehow we do get out on the other side.

(it has got all the sentiments I talk about) Her journey takes her through despair into being a stronger person, but with scars from the journey. Those type of scars we all will get in life. And no, it is not all my own story, but I do have scars myself.

Marcia Ramodike

Masiziba: Why I chose A Food is life. It is a need and a necessity. Every day, we have to eat to survive. That is Agriculture. But why I chose this field of study is more of a personal story and I did not realise (until later) that it was always my childhood dream and passion. My grandparents from both sides of the family were farmers. In every right. They possessed the knowledge of farming and innovated using limited resources to feed their families. This is often termed as subsistence farming. They passed on the knowledge to their children who passed it on to their children and that is where I was introduced to agriculture. At a very young age, I used to feed the chickens before going to school, count the eggs every time I came back and made sure that the chickens were all ‘okay’. Then on some days, I would be designated to goats, the garden etc. Each day, I was grasping the preparation, planning and knowledge in addition to falling in love with the process. However, I saw gaps. Gaps I knew I could fill even though I was not sure how exactly. When the time came to choose careers in high school, we were all attracted to different careers. For the wrong reasons, we focused on the ‘average’ salary in the field of study. Made our ‘popular’ decisions on only that. Not realising what we loved, and what aligned with our abilities. After some confusion, I was introduced to Agricultural Economics. I knew this is who I am. It spoke of market access, how food

Agricultural Science moves from farm to plate, policy and more importantly; food security. It hit home. Agricultural Economics became the tool I would use to fill the gaps that I had witnessed as a child. I decided then and there that this is what I am going to do. Interestingly, beside the passion, my abilities aligned with the choice. Looking back, I do not regret making the choice. After a few degrees and projects, I am proud to say Agriculture is where I am called to be.

Masiziba Hadebe Did you know? Masiziba is a genius Look here: In 2020, Hollard Insure joined forces with Farmingportal.co.za and Agri News Net to present the Young Agri Writers competition, to encourage fresh, young media voices in the agricultural space. Who was the winner: Our own Masiziba! Her article was Ocean Farms, first published in Hola MaHigh-School! And that put R6,000 in her pocket as well! Genius she is!

New Exhibitions

We added two new exhibitions to our collection on the floor. The 4IR and Mirror Maze exhibitions

4IR Exhibition The 4IR exhibition currently hosts the Humanoids (two small ones and the big one called Pepper), Virtual reality Station, Augmented Reality and the interactive displays integrated with of a number of TV screens. This concept is through the touch screen located at the entrance to the center. Interactive display section has been created where visitors are encouraged to use traditional touch screens to immerse themselves in games and content around Science Technology Engineering and Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Children are provided with the opportunity to play games to train their analytical ability, improve their ability to solve puzzles and chal-

lenges. They are also challenged to explore more traditional content style, such as exploration of subjects including how Artificial Intelligence works, Machine Learning, how data transfers over networks etc. Science Exploration While traditional science teaching has complex challenges around logistics, safety and costs. VR has none of these limitations. Experiments are done as often as needed with no physical costs of materials or safety concerns. Students can learn about physics and chemistry, life science etc. in a safe environment. Within VR learning occurs without any distract but with full immersion. Learning and understanding mathematics becomes easier and more fun inside of VR due to the nature of games and how they are designed. This is designed to make learning and exploration real fun especially for little ones. Wide learning opportunities exist through this exhibition, children have many prospects to learn on, e.g. google earth exploration experience. With Google Earth VR, children can travel to almost any place in the world. They can fly all over the world and explore any city, any monument and landmark anywhere in the world. The exhibition has two different types of humanoids the small one (called Sanbot Max and the Bigger one called Pepper). The Sanbot Max robot was designed to be implemented into numerous kinds of business scenarios, providing customers and staff members with intelligent and efficient services. Pepper is a semi-humanoid robot, which means that a human has to control it. It is designed with the ability to read emotions. Pepper recognizes faces and basic human emotion.

Drones and Mirror Maze Drones Pilots at the Clubhouse Did you know that the Clubhouse has three certified drone pilots? They also have 10 DJI Tell drones that they will used for their drone course. They are currently putting together content for the said course. In addition, the Clubhouse offers programmes such as Teach Fundamentals of drones, real-life applications of drones: namely surveillance using object identification and tracking to videography for commercials and other media use. This includes python programming that covers drone automation.

Mirror Maze Exhibit A mirror is an object that reflects an image. Light that bounces off a mirror will show an image of whatever is in front of it, when focused through the lens of the eye or a camera. Mirrors reverse the direction of the image in an equal yet opposite angle from which the light shines upon it. This allows the viewer to see themselves or objects behind them, or even objects that are at an angle from them but out of their field of view, such as around a corner. Natural mirrors prehistoric times, water, but people turing mirrors out rials for thousands metals, and glass. metals like silver often used due to applied as a thin cause of its natuhard surface.

A maze is a path or collection of paths, typically from an entrance to a goal. The word is used to refer both to branching tour puzzles through which the solver must find a route, and to simpler non-branching patterns that lead unambiguously through a convoluted layout to a goal. The pathways and walls in a maze are typically fixed, but puzzles in which the walls and paths can change during the game are also categorised as mazes or tour puzzles Mirror Maze The mirror maze itself is a pattern, combining several characteristics of geometric patterns: repetition, symmetry and tessellation using repeated equilateral triangles. These triangles fit together without any gaps or overlaps, creating a tessellation. Mirrored surfaces all around reflect the pattern so that it repeats and appears infinite.

I found a most inspiring article here. It is a fact that we still like to indulge ourselves in movies. So, the pressure is still on the in terms of producing something we all want to look at. But now comes the problem. Producing a movie is a major undertaking. The average cost is some $100 million, but can be higher, depending on location, stunts, props, etc. The traditional way of making money out of a movie is to release it to the movie houses (NuMetro, SterKinekor and so on). Of course US movie houses dominate a bit in this arena. So the producers get their money back from the ticket sale. That is not difficult to grasp and is the traditional way of doing business. … and then came Covid! Suddenly, the movie houses cannot be filled and that now means that some of the big movie house chains (in the US) face bankruptcy. If they go, where do we go?

We are talking real money here. According to the article, AMC (a movie chain in US) has warned its investors that they need some $750 million this year. Cineworld has shut some of its movie houses in Europe and across the US. We have an audience (you and I) who would like to watch a new movie, a producer who is keen on producing but … the link between the producer and the audience is broken. Netflix and other online platforms will be far more dominant in the distribution of movies. We can then ask ourselves: what will you and I prefer? Squinting at the cell phone for watching a movie or do we still prefer to go to the movie house? As for now, we might still prefer the movie house, but will our preferences change after 2 years of Covid restrictions? That will determine the ‘value chain’ of movie production. The key question is also about the ticket price. What is Netflix vs. Metro? What is the convenience? Where do we really want to be watching a movie? Let us also remember that going to the movies can still be an ‘event’. We might have a pizza before (or after) and we still have the feeling of being out and about. That is difficult to achieve by looking at a cell phone at home.

What about the type of movies we want to watch? The article has a few words on that account. Things I have never considered. The first strange twist is that China ticket sale passed the US market ticket sale! This is a major development as the US market has always been the biggest and the most important one. Hollywood movies have been dominant globally. But suddenly, the Chinese movie goers preferred Chinese movies (not Mulan!) in the likes of “The Eight Hundred,” an animated film “Jiang Ziya: The Legend of Deification” and the patriotic anthology “My People, My Homeland”. Ever heard of these? Me neither. If we turn to the themes, we might see what the audience (you and I) like. And this might have a surprise for us. Are we keen on watching movies with the hero in a face mask and doing

social distancing? Probably not. It will be too much to also look at in the movie house. I quote: “Rivals Marvel Studios and DC Films are both leaning hard on multiverses, the geeky concept of a constellation of parallel fictional worlds that still occasionally intersect. It is a narratively complex gamble, one that was introduced to the mainstream in Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and will be teased out in such upcoming live-action movies as “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “The Flash,” and the next Spider-Man sequel, as well as on streaming shows on Disney Plus and HBO Max.” Do we produce for a Covid world which we think is there 2 years from now? Or do we think we will be out of the shadow and get on with batman beating up the Joker again. As we did 2 years ago? Video streaming giant Netflix had a total net income of over 2.76 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, whilst the company’s annual revenue reached 25 billion U.S. dollars. The number of Netflix’s streaming subscribers worldwide has continued to grow in recent years, reaching 204 million in the fourth quarter of 2020 (source: www.statista.com). Is this the new normal?

The Covid-19 Pandemic has brought about a huge change in the entertainment industry and in our lives in general and that really affected the normal ways we used to doing things. One of the most obvious industries to be hit hard is the entertainment industry, and since I am there, I find it fitting for me to share with you a couple of changes that came with it and to share info on some of the popular award ceremonies. The Grammys were originally slated for January 31, 2021 but were moved to March 14 due to the pandemic. Our very own Trevor Noah was the host for this prestigious virtual awards and Nigerian born Burna Boy and South Africa’s very own Anatii both scooped an award. Proud moments indeed. Most of the award shows for 2021 have been pushed back to accommodate the covid-19 pandemic which has been a damper to the entertainment industry as a whole. The Academy Awards which typically take place in

February have been moved to April 25, The Indie Spirit Awards moved to April 24 and the BAFTA’s to April 11 and are scheduled to happen live as usual all covid-19 protocols observed. And here in South Africa the 15th edition of the SAFTA ( South African Film and Television) awards are set to take place in May 2021 with a date not yet confirmed. As for The SAMA’s (South African Music Awards) the entry registration closed on January 31, 2021. The date for the actual awards has not yet being confirmed, though in 2020 the ceremony was moved to a virtual setting and split into 5 episodes that aired between the 3 and 7 of August. It will probably be the same this year as well. We will just have to be glued to our social media for dates. Change is in the air and that is what we will have to live with, probably not only for 2021 but also for 2022. The new normal has arrived in the entertainment industry.

We have a few things for April. We know Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and even grandparent’s day. But we also have Siblings Day. Siblings Day is a new thing. It started in US and Canada (celebrated 10 April) by Claudia Evart to honour the memory of her brother and sister, who died at early ages. It also got to Europe where it is celebrated 31 May. It also has an equivalent in the Hindu celebration of Raksha Bandhan (Sisters tie a string around the wrist of their brothers). It was started in 1997 in the US and in 2014 in Europe, so it is one of the newest ‘celebrations’. Wiki: “Examples of commemoration during this observance include giving your sibling a gift (including a surprise gift), a giftcard, and taking one out for dinner. Non-material examples of observances during this day includes giving hugs to your sibling(s), enjoying time with them, honouring their presence in your life, and greeting them on various social media platforms using childhood photos. Neat, I think!

Old Permic Script. This is something completely different! We know Cyrillic alphabet – Russian. However, Permic is “a “highly idiosyncratic adaptation” of the Cyrillic script once used to write medieval Komi (Permic). The script was introduced by a Russian missionary, Stepan Khrap, also known as Saint Stephen of Perm in 1372. The script derived from Cyrillic and Greek, with Komi “Tamga” signs, the latter being similar in the appearance to runes or siglas poveiras because they were created by incisions rather than by usual writing. The inclusion of the latter aided the script to greater acceptance among the medieval Permic speakers of the time. The script was in use until the 17th century, when it was superseded by the Cyrillic script. Abur was also used as cryptographic writing for the Russian language. April 26, which is the feast day of Stephen of Perm, is celebrated as Old Permic Alphabet Day Permic allowed the very old languages to be written by having an alphabet and a method. That is why it is significant.

We need writers! Hola MaHigh-School is YOUR magazine. That is why we would love to see students writing for students about student life and everything of importance to a student in any grade10-12 across the country. What is required? Passionate about your topic of choice - no dull articles here. Do you get anything out of it? Well, not money, sorrry. BUT if we publish your articles you will have: Your bio in a commercial magazine A photo of yourself You can put it all on your CV you can use us as a reference

Is it important? YES it is. Look what Rofhiwa said: My name is Rofhiwa and I love to write. I have used my skills to express my thoughts on international dealings of the world which have been published in Hola MaHigh-School. It has paid off, not only is my work printed for young people in the country to read, but it also contributed to me gettng a bursary from CNBC-Africa to do my post-graduate studies. Would be a lot harder to get by if I didn’t have a platform like Hola MaHigh-School.

Next Issue April is Open-Day. This is major. Despite everything (and we don’t really know all of it yet), there are so many things to consider. It is not just for grade 12. Open-Day is the opportunity to have a look at what your interests could lead to. Take the opportunity! We need to look at the science calendar. There are many things happening. But we also have the regulars: music, movies and fun! Good read!
