Open Day May is Open Day month. And this is important. Is it only grade 12? not really. Grade 10 and 11 should also participate as much as possible. Because ... grade 12 might be a bit hectic and it is a good idea to try and be pro-active. There are so many offerings and it is not just university all of it.

So instead of having a long list of Open Day institutions, we would rather have some views on Open Day. This is where the district comes in: how do they promote and prepare Open Day? And a TVET? how do they do it? Plenty of the kind of advise we otherwise would not see. Science is a good ol’ classic: Space tourism! except so much is happening and very fast. Plan B is a good thing and this time we look at it from a music perspective. What now if a performed doesn’t show? Prepare, the winter seems to be on us! and there is at least something constant - the heater and the blanket and warm cocoa. Good read!

May is Open Day activities – but OK, Open Day things are also throughout the year now. We may ask ourselves: how important is it when I can just google it all? Is face-to-face important really? First of all: let us clarify ‘face-to-face’ in 2022. Zoom meetings etc. are a part of our world now. So that we can get used to. It opens up opportunities though: if I am sitting in Mpumalanga and dearly would love to go to UCT, it is now opportune to attend virtual meetings. Maybe it is not 100%, but this we have never been able to do in the past. Let us look at the traditional Open Day. Cruising into the institution and looking around. Seeing the buildings and the environment. Seeing prospective fellow students. All well and good. But the more important thing about it is you can get to meet the lecturers. The actual people who will be teaching if you should be accepted. You can shake hands and talk to them. Even if this is zoom, it gives you the only opportunity to evaluate the institution before you hand in your application. Use it!

How we prepare learners for Open Days Careers and career information is mediated from very early on. In grade 1 or even at grade R learners are asked the question “what do you want to be one day when you grow up?” Career dress-up days is part of the annual programme at all schools in week 1 of October. The Life Orientation Curriculum makes provision for the Grade 8 learner to know their personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes in terms of careers. The Grade 9 learners must know which careers are linked to which subjects because they are expected to choose subjects in grade 10. The grade 11 learner must know how to write the application letters, how to complete application forms, be aware of deadlines and documentation that might be needed as well as minimum requirements for a particular programme of study or field of work. They are also encouraged to do job-shadowing during their holidays so that they can experience the field that they might want to pursue. Grade 12 learners must commit and apply and be aware of require-

ments, deadlines, documents needed and due dates, dates of information sessions and pre-admission tests or whatever requirements they might have to meet for their chosen field of studies or training. Grade 8 to grade 12 learners are invited to attend various targeted expo’s at their school or at the institution for identified careers information sessions. Learners are given Careers School Based Assessments and they are expected to identify various important things to consider when planning a future. Learners are encouraged to have discussions with their families as soon as possible so that they can rally support from their families because they will definitely need support from home. At the District the Psychologists assist with aptitude testing and advise learners where their strongest options might be. A myriad of options can be confusing wherefore it is better to start very early and explore various options before a final decision is made. Learners are encouraged to have discussions with their families as soon as possible so that they can rally support from their families because they will definitely need support from home. The final choices are up to the learners but the preparation at school and district level is to bring the information to the class and allow learners to make informed decisions from as early as choosing subjects and subject combinations in grade 9. A few subject changes might even be allowed up until grade 11.

A student experience I only went on one open day during grade 10 and that was to a FET college. Interestingly, I was not aware that the day when the college opened its doors for us was an ‘open day’. The day was filled with activities to introduce us to the courses offered and show us around the college. We met the lecturers, some of the students and got cool prizes that were coupled with a prospectus and registration information. All the information left us in awe and in inspiration of what we could be. However, it is important to note that we went physically to the campus because the college was nearby. We could not go to other universities because they were far and could be very costly. But of course, the COVIDera has showed us that we can go virtual (virtual open days). Eliminating distance barriers in an instant and broadening our choice of colleges and universities we can go to. As an alternative, my high school had brought the varsity to us by calling students from various institutions around the country to tell us how varsity is and what we can expect. The students brought their respective prospectus in order to give information

on the choices we could make and sharing their varsity stories with us. It was as if they were bringing the ‘open day’ to us. In all those instances, I realised that open days are very important mainly because they open your eyes to opportunity. They provide information on career choice and what you need to do and have in order to reach a certain career destination (requirements).

Additionally, the open days also expose you to potential bursaries and scholarships that you may have not heard of in mainstream media. Especially if one were to consider that each university can develop its own relationship with funders and that is why you will see some of the bursaries stating which college or university you can specifically go study at. Moreover, open days show the life that you will be expected to live on campus. This is through exposing you to extra-curricular activities and sporting activities. Furthermore, introduce you to potential accommodation and what kind of life to expect in that aspect.

Holographic Exhibitions Are Helping To Enhance Museums’ Digital Estates Giving Them A Gateway Into The Metaverse There is no doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic has pushed digital technologies to the fore and accelerated museums’ growth into the digital space. After two challenging years in which many institutions have faced long closures and lost revenue, the potential for online engagement and digital accessibility has been one of the few shining lights and sources of comfort for museums and heritage organisations. Now, a new partnership between immersive technology specialist Perception and consulting firm GT Advisory Services is set to help museums to grow further into the world of digital exhibitions with the launch of Holo-Museum into the African continent. Once digitised, artworks and artefacts can be converted into 3D representations that leap from the screen, requiring nothing more than the Desktop AR app and a pair of cheap 3D glasses. The ease of accessibility offered by Holo-Museum provides a stark contrast to costly Virtual Reality headsets and other 3D immersive platforms.

The launch of Holo-Museum into the African market began in January 2022, with a webinar hosted jointly by Perception and GT Advisory Services to introduce the platform to educators and organisations. Attended by museum professionals, government representatives and financial institutions, the successful webinar represents the first step in a process that will see GT Advisory Services attract further cultural organisations onto the platform to appeal to students of all ages in a creative digital space. Speaking at the launch, GT Advisory Services’ Abdul-Moutie Abrahams said, “We are passionate about supporting organisations in the arts and culture to navigate their digital transformations. Museums, galleries and heritage institutions have so much to offer in the metaverse and we believe that, in partnership with Perception, we can help tell their stories through immersive experiences, reaching a diverse audience of people who may not be able to reach a physical museum space.” Artists, museums and heritage organisations can explore Holo-MUSEUM here: https://www.morpheus.art. For more information about Holo-MUSEUM from partners@perception. codes or contact e-mail: info@gtras.co.za or / mobile: 082 777 8688 to find out more about showcasing exhibits on the platform.

The accountant and auditor are important professions in an organization. Both these professions are performed separately by internal employees and independent third parties respectively. Although these two occupations may have countless differences, they complement each other in some regards. The accountant can benefit from the knowledge of an auditor to enhance practices in their accounting work. The auditor can also be assisted by the accountant for a detailed accounting system of an organization Although the responsibilities of accountants may differ from organisation to organisation, some of the most usual duties include: • Overseeing the financial activities of a company by keeping an eye on and recording the company’s financial transactions. • Preparing annual financial statements and reports for the company. • The accountant also makes recommendations on expenditure cuts as well as providing financial analysis and advising the CEO and CFO on financial related matters. To sum up, accountants are usually responsible for financial-related activities in a company and are required to have knowledge of all aspects of a company’s finance.

The word ‘auditor’ is quite self-explanatory. The auditor’s role is to audit or inspect a company’s transactions. Their main role is to make sure that these transactions are recorded according to the accounting laws and regulations, they go through company expenses and receipts, and they could also appear to inspect the products involved in the transactions to make sure that purchases actually occurred and that no signs of embezzlement exist. The basic duties of an auditor are: • Providing an auditor’s report containing their opinion on whether a company’s financial statements comply with the account laws and regulations. • Reporting any detected fraud to the audit committee. • Providing assistance in fraud investigations carried out by companies. • Most importantly, the auditor should adhere to the principles of Auditing for effective and reliable results. With a thorough understanding of the duties of an accountant and an auditor, one should be able to simply conclude that accounting is a continuous process and focuses on accurately recording and preparing all financial transactions and statements. Auditing, on the other hand, is independent and focuses on assessing financial statements and providing opinions on whether these statements are accurate or not.

Visit Northlink TVET College Campus Open Day Many college aspiring students deciding on which tertiary institution to attend can benefit from Open Day as it is not an easy choice and this decision should not be taken lightly. This is the reason for the existence of the Open Day. Northlink College has seven campuses and prospective students can visit any of the campuses during the Open Day, to find out more information about the college course offering. However recently Covid-19 has had an inhibiting effect on the Open Day spirit, due to restrictions in movement and observation of Covid-19 protocols, therefore no date has been set aside for an Open day. As soon as the date is scheduled, it will be communicated on the College website and social media platforms. A prospective student should ask about the structure of the course, the entry requirements, and what the compulsory components are. They

need to establish whether there are optional modules that are necessary for the student’s particular career path. Campus Facilities Attending Northlink College is not just about choosing the right course to suit you. It is also important to find out about the support services and facilities on offer to you. These include the library, the student representative council (SRC) presence, and other student support services. The open day is an ideal way to explore a range of campus facilities and what they have to offer, so you know they are catering to your needs before you apply. The staff at the campus will be more than happy to show you around the facilities on the Open day, so you can ask as many questions as you wish.

Campus location If you are intending on relocating to attend college, take the time to find out more about the local area (Rural/Urban) and the availability of accommodation. An open day is a perfect way to do this, and if you have any concerns, raise them with the college staff. They can tell you about educational resources available so that you can beforehand see whether this is the right place for you.

Chat to current students A prospective student should find out what it is like to study at the College straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. In doing so, you will be able to get an accurate first-hand account of college life. In addition, see if you can find someone in your community or college who is taking the same course you are intending to apply for and ask for their honest opinion about the college. Course funding opportunities This is a critical point, make sure you find out whether the course you are intending to apply for is funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) so that you can look for alternate funding if it is not funded. Ask if there are any other scholarships, bursaries, or funding opportunities you can apply for to help ease the financial burden. Meet other people Attending college for the first time can be extremely daunting, especially if you do not know anyone. An open day gives you the chance to meet students and lecturers at the college so you will have a friendly face when you start for the first time. You will also get the opportunity to meet people who are in the same boat as you, so you might even make some new friends before you even join.

Visit the accommodation If you will be moving away from home for your years at College, and maybe living in student residents in your first year. Take advantage of the opportunity afforded on open days to have a look around the student residence blocks. Make sure the college you apply for an accommodation that is acceptable to you. Student support services

If you are a student needing special support, due to impairment/ disability or other. You might need a little extra help and support being away from home for the first time, so it’s a good idea to see what services are offered at the College student support services.

Decide on the right fit If you are happy with the course, and the students and staff calibre, you should ask yourself; can I settle here for the next few years. Is it somewhere you could settle into and enjoy. What appeals to you about the environment. Only you can decide whether the college is the right fit for you. If you leave the Open day with doubts or are not 100% certain, then it is probably best to do more consultation by arranging an appointment with Student support service for career guidance.

We may all have a dream of being a fantastic writer, a celebrity in the book world. The one who is wheeling in millions and so on. All of that aside, there is an entire industry out there of ghost writing. What is this now? We may have heard about it, but it is complicated (of course). I found a definition on Wiki: “A ghostwriter is hired to write literary or journalistic works, speeches, or other texts that are officially credited to another person as the author”. There are really two types of ‘ghosts’: the ones who are not credited. Here we have the official author who may not have the time (or the literary capacity) to write an entire book (could be a celebrity’s memoirs). Then the ghostwriter comes in handy. It will be the person who actually writes the book based on notes, interviews and so on. But the ghost could be known, but will not be credited. An example? Hillary Clinton’s memoirs were written by a ghostwriter. The fee might have been $500,000. We also have ghostwriters who are indeed known and have a name for themselves. They are professionals.

Let us look at Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler books. These famous writers could outline a plot and get the ghost to write the book in their style. Why would they do that? The authors might be getting older and it takes a lot of research to do non-fiction at the level or Clancy and Cussler. The publisher is interested in cranking out books with the name of Clancy and Cussler, because .. well, it sells! So, here is a book with the name of the author at the top in big letters and at the bottom we see the ghostwriter. Look at Cussler’s ‘Ghost Ship’. It clearly states Clive Cussler but it also says ‘and Graham Brown’. Ghostwriting is not limited to books from famous authors. The screenplay of a movie, based on a fantastic book, can easily be ‘adapted’ by a writer to fit into a movie of say 1 ½ hours. That means butchering the book, cutting pieces, adding more ‘action’ and so on. We have official speechwriters for politicians, we see it in the music industry and also in art. But the author might still get rich: JK Rowling (Harry Potter) is the richest author with more than $1 billion in the bank It is an industry!

School gardens:

Initiation, Impact, and sustainability Food insecurity is prevalent in many communities and that is why many schools in the country have feeding schemes to mitigate the situation. However, there has been has a rise in the need to develop food gardens within schools as these gardens are seen as a tool to contribute to food security. To illustrate, a body of work focusing on school food gardens has found that the potential health benefits related to a school garden go beyond nutritional benefits and the activity itself can be linked to long term sustainability of education. In the consideration of successful school gardens, it was found that these gardens did contribute much-needed fresh vegetables to learners’ diets. The additionally benefits include physical, mental, and emotional benefits related to providing children with opportunities to engage with nature (therapeutic activity). Particularly, the school garden programs improved pupil’s confidence, resilience, self-esteem, and positively influenced motivation and behaviour, with increased enthusiasm for school

and learning, and better attendance and completion of homework. A school food garden also potentially provides a resource for active, experiential learning opportunities that may be formal (linked to specific curriculum topics and integrated with classroom-based learning) or informal (through after-school activities or during play times). Now, the question becomes who can initiate such programmes within schools? The research done has found that paid for gardeners, school caretakers or community members can take responsibility for managing school gardens, and this remains the case today. To ensure sustainability of such initiatives, it is important to regard the garden as a purely agricultural activity. If the garden itself is viewed as an agricultural activity, it is understood that there is a need to make the whole project sustainable in the long term. For instance, resources (water, fencing, inputs) must be allocated, harvesting times set, allocation of labour hours (work must be done even on school holidays), security etc. In a way, it should run like a farm. It is apparent that school garden initiatives have a huge impact in curbing food insecurity within schools while achieving additional benefits. However, there is a large share that still needs to be done to improve the sustainability of the initiatives.

New Exhibitions

We added two new exhibitions to our collection on the floor. The 4IR and Mirror Maze exhibitions

4IR Exhibition The 4IR exhibition currently hosts the Humanoids (two small ones and the big one called Pepper), Virtual reality Station, Augmented Reality and the interactive displays integrated with of a number of TV screens. This concept is through the touch screen located at the entrance to the center. Interactive display section has been created where visitors are encouraged to use traditional touch screens to immerse themselves in games and content around Science Technology Engineering and Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Children are provided with the opportunity to play games to train their analytical ability, improve their ability to solve puzzles and chal-

lenges. They are also challenged to explore more traditional content style, such as exploration of subjects including how Artificial Intelligence works, Machine Learning, how data transfers over networks etc. Science Exploration While traditional science teaching has complex challenges around logistics, safety and costs. VR has none of these limitations. Experiments are done as often as needed with no physical costs of materials or safety concerns. Students can learn about physics and chemistry, life science etc. in a safe environment. Within VR learning occurs without any distract but with full immersion. Learning and understanding mathematics becomes easier and more fun inside of VR due to the nature of games and how they are designed. This is designed to make learning and exploration real fun especially for little ones. Wide learning opportunities exist through this exhibition, children have many prospects to learn on, e.g. google earth exploration experience. With Google Earth VR, children can travel to almost any place in the world. They can fly all over the world and explore any city, any monument and landmark anywhere in the world. The exhibition has two different types of humanoids the small one (called Sanbot Max and the Bigger one called Pepper). The Sanbot Max robot was designed to be implemented into numerous kinds of business scenarios, providing customers and staff members with intelligent and efficient services. Pepper is a semi-humanoid robot, which means that a human has to control it. It is designed with the ability to read emotions. Pepper recognizes faces and basic human emotion.

Drones and Mirror Maze Drones Pilots at the Clubhouse Did you know that the Clubhouse has three certified drone pilots? They also have 10 DJI Tell drones that they will used for their drone course. They are currently putting together content for the said course. In addition, the Clubhouse offers programmes such as Teach Fundamentals of drones, real-life applications of drones: namely surveillance using object identification and tracking to videography for commercials and other media use. This includes python programming that covers drone automation.

Mirror Maze Exhibit A mirror is an object that reflects an image. Light that bounces off a mirror will show an image of whatever is in front of it, when focused through the lens of the eye or a camera. Mirrors reverse the direction of the image in an equal yet opposite angle from which the light shines upon it. This allows the viewer to see themselves or objects behind them, or even objects that are at an angle from them but out of their field of view, such as around a corner. Natural mirrors prehistoric times, water, but people turing mirrors out rials for thousands metals, and glass. metals like silver often used due to applied as a thin cause of its natuhard surface.

A maze is a path or collection of paths, typically from an entrance to a goal. The word is used to refer both to branching tour puzzles through which the solver must find a route, and to simpler non-branching patterns that lead unambiguously through a convoluted layout to a goal. The pathways and walls in a maze are typically fixed, but puzzles in which the walls and paths can change during the game are also categorised as mazes or tour puzzles Mirror Maze The mirror maze itself is a pattern, combining several characteristics of geometric patterns: repetition, symmetry and tessellation using repeated equilateral triangles. These triangles fit together without any gaps or overlaps, creating a tessellation. Mirrored surfaces all around reflect the pattern so that it repeats and appears infinite.

Should you do your Masters or Not? It becomes difficult to believe that going to school can be a ‘choice’ as education is so important to many countries. But doing a Masters is a choice. A choice of furthering your studies and adding to the existing qualifications one has. The question then becomes: “Should I consider doing my masters? Unfortunately there is little known about the exact number of people who have either attempted to pursue their masters or have obtained a master’s degree, let alone consensus on their reasons. However, these ‘numbers’ are doubling in countries such as the United States of America. There are various reasons for this but the main reason is that graduates believe that pursuing a master’s degree is a career advancement move. In other words, if one is eyeing a promotion, a master’s degree might be the key they need to open that door. However, the ‘need’ not ‘want’ of a Master’s degree might be dependent on the rise in research and development institutions or divisions that solely require most of the staff members to be masters of their profession. Research and development divisions or

institutions provide powerful knowledge and insights which often lead to existing processes where efficiency can be increased and costs reduced. It also allows businesses to develop new products and services. In my experience, a master’s degree, especially if mostly research based, gives you the opportunity to fall into the Research and Development part that is so crucial to innovation. So it really becomes the question of when I obtain my Masters, what am I going to do with it? That is why when you see most of the research projects requiring masters students and doctoral students because the degree has an aim of generally solving problems and developing existing ideas, products or methodologies. Other complications that arise when deciding whether to do a Masters or not is the age. Do I need to complete it when I am young or old? It depends on the person.

Some people prefer to do their masters years later after they’ve had a grasp of what it is they have interest in or would like to be an expert in. While others, like myself, prefer to do it while I am young and full of energy. In addition, I am vastly interested in research and the master’s route is definitely aligned with my career prospects. In all honesty, there are quite a number of factors that can and will affect your choice of doing your masters ranging from finances to career choices. However, it remains important to be able to understand your ‘why’ before making a choice.

Space Tourism buy a ticket now Space tourism – we are closer than ever We have written about space tourism before. But it is starting to be reality. I found this interesting article here. Let us just look at a few facts first: Axiom launched four of its members on the commercial Falcon-9 rocket for a 10-day trip to ISS. The launch was 8 April and everything went fine. So what? We might ask. But there is a lot to this. First of all. NASA had to accept ‘tourists’ on the NASA-managed part of ISS. Axiom had to ‘buy’ a ride on the Falcon rocket. This is all commercial transactions. Before we turn to who is Axiom, let us briefly look at ‘space station’. Bigelow was busy with his space station. The big inflatable ones. But Covid by and large killed it all. This was close to being reality. Orbital Reef is a Blue Origin (Bezoz) project. It is destined

to launch in 2030 and has been selected by NASA to be a future space station when ISS gets decommissioned. China is busy as well, but that is not a commercial venture. Conclusion: there are plenty of initiatives and some of them are fairly far ahead. So, Axiom! Axiom was founded in 2016 by Kamal (Kam) Ghaffaria and Michael Suffredini. Ghaffaria holds several degrees and is a PhD in Management Information Systems. Ghaffarian founded X-energy LLC in 2009. The company designs high-temperature gas cooled nuclear reactors. He also co-founded Intuitive Machines in 2013. Suffredini is the absolute ‘guru’ when it comes to space stations. He was the driving force behind ISS in many different ways from 2005 until 1015. Look them up – they are remarkable people. Axiom was granted access to the forward port of the ISS Harmony module in 2020. This is important as Axiom will rely on ISS as the power source until Axiom has got all its different modules into space. Axiom intends to attach its own modules until such time as ISS is decommissioned. Then Axiom space station will be on its own.

The planned modules of Axiom are: AxH1: Axiom Station’s first planned module, Hab 1, is expected to launch in 2024. It will provide quarters for four crew members. AxSEE-1: Axiom Space is planned to manufacture the SEE-1 module for Space Entertainment Enterprise (or S.E.E.). It will be the first entertainment studio in space. It is currently planned to launch in late 2024 after AxH1 has connected to the ISS. AxH2: Axiom Station’s Hab 2 module is expected to launch in 2025. It will provide quarters for an additional four crew members allowing the station to support up to eight crew.

lab is planned to launch in 2026.

AxRMF: Axiom Station’s research and manufacturing

AxEO: Axiom Station’s Earth Observatory will be a glass-walled cupola planned to launch in 2026. AxPT: Axiom Station’s Power Tower will provide power via solar array to

support the station so that Axiom Station will be able to support itself once it disconnects from the ISS. It is expected to launch in 2027. Until AxPT is launched, Axiom Station will be relying on the ISS to help provide power. What is the significance of all this? There are several conclusions: First of all NASA is going to be more of a management entity. A range of initiatives will be outsourced to commercial enterprises. The glaring examples are of course Elon Musk’s Falcon 9 rockets and the successor to that, the Bezoz Space station and so on. NASA is still in the race for the Moon and Mars, but my guess it is will be outsourced as well (why could it be? Because the NASA mega-rocket doesn’t want to fly!). Cost of driving a space station will come down. Sure, the Axiom charged $55 million of a ten-day trip, but hey, somebody wanted to pay that. Just wait until we see real tourism to space. That is not far off with the pace of Axiom. Who will power a lot of it? Elon Musk will be a contender and Bezoz will be there as well. The first indication is clear: there will be the Axiom entertainment module and there will be real product development onboard. We are past science. We are past entrepreneurs. We are past engineers. Now we talk business people buying services and selling for a profit.

What is happening in the world besides all the bad news on wars and so on? The world is still functioning in other aspects, but there are some serious hiccups. Out of the blue comes a chip shortage. Let us just recap a bit. The demand for chips has escalated dramatically the last few years. There are many reasons, but the ‘natural’ demand has been in cell phones and cars. Cars have many more ‘devices’ from seat adjustments (needs chips for that), self-driving (needs chips for that), and so on. … and then Covid came around. Suddenly a lot of factories either shut down or reduced the pace of manufacture. And that meant the demand for components (chips!) went down in the traditional products. Should that have meant a decrease in chip demand? Yes, but something else happened. Covid caused a lot of the global workforce to work from home. But that

meant that PC and office equipment sales had to go up. The workforce needed equipment at home! (Wiki: 13% increase in global demand for PCs, 27% other sources) Covid constrained the production of chips in Taiwan and South Korea and now we had the shortage starting to hit home. One might ask: what about the manufacturers having a bit of ready stock in the warehouse? But this is where production is ‘fragile’. Manufacturers are not interested in warehousing as it eats up capital. So the principle of ‘just-in-time-production’ is the key word. In essence: components arrive at the factory when needed and not one minute earlier (or later!). It is a delicate balance of course and no disruptions are allowed. But the world is not perfect. Suddenly a lot of industries had problems producing. And it got worse! Wiki: “droughts in Taiwan during the summer of 2021 were also a significant contributing factor. The droughts affected the production due to the lack of available ultrapure water that is needed to clean the factories and wafers”. And worse: “a winter storm pushed Texas semiconductor factories to shut down, while a fire in Japan’s Renesas plant caused delays - and this is where nearly one-third of the car chips used worldwide are produced” (www. techhq.com).

And much worse: “Adding to the woes, Russia’s unprovoked attack has forced the shutdown of two neon suppliers in Ukraine. That gas not only helps light up the Las Vegas Strip but is essential for the lasers used to produce semiconductors. With nearly half of the world’s supply of the gas now offline, that could threaten to exacerbate the chip shortage if alternative supplies aren’t found (www.forbes.com) Can it get worse? Probably it can, but the investments in chip-manufacturing is now a reality. China is investing $1,4 trillion in strategic manufacturing, chip-making equipment being some of it. All of that will take time and there seems not to be any hope for 2022 and maybe for the beginning of 2023. Although we see an upswing in world economy due to the pent-up demand Covid created, we are going to be restrained by the chip shortage for another year or more. It could lead to a glut in chips later on, but even that might be a remote possibility. As horrible as it sounds, we will see the shortage still being there as it

takes time to ramp up production and the added production will be consumed in the pent-up demand for products. The trend of more products being based on chips (cars as an example) will drive demand even higher, but that is where the added supply might be coming online. In essence: it might just balance out somehow. What can we conclude? There are several conclusions and lessons to be learned in this. The first one is that the global supply chain and delivery times are fragile entities and there are no contingency plans for this. We have to start thinking along the lines of: “what now if …” The next bigger thing is that our reliance on a few suppliers (or countries) back-fired. Of course cost is driving this. Placing bigger orders on a few suppliers should result in lower prices. But then we are vulnerable if anything goes pear-shaped. Placing smaller orders on a variety of suppliers will drive pricing of end-products up. And it gets messy to handle a lot of suppliers. And all of this for a situation that might not happen after all. The extra little funny is that world logistics also impacts everything. As products start flowing, the world transportation systems are strained. There are delays at key ports globally as a lot is transported via shipping. So, choose your poison!

Plan B: When a performer lets you down As an event planner you have to always prepare for the worst , you have to always have a back-up plan in case a performer doesn’t pitch or they come late. This will happen to you and when it does, the show still have to go on. So having a Plan B will make you stand out from the rest and below are the tips that I have for you as I have hosted shows before Make friends with artists Making friends with artists or performers can help you in such a crisis if a performer cancels. You might get one of your friends to replace them and fill up the empty slot. In that way the show still goes on. Have back up By having back up or someone on stand-by (an upcoming artist that is seeking exposure) helps a lot because in such crisis you know that you can always fill that spot quickly Know talent in the area If you do your research and find out who the people are in the area where you are hosting and who they like to see at your show, you might call that

person. Even if you do not put them on the line-up, it will allow them to be there for you. You can even offer complimentary tickets for them so in case you need them they are there. Your Master of Ceremonies Make sure you get a Master of Ceremony who is able to work under pressure and can make quick decisions and also be able to entertain your audience so that they can fill that gap whiles you make a plan B. Either get an mc who can dance, do comedy or who is a performer him/ herself. That way the show will go on and your audience will be captivated and not get bored. one thing that kills the vibe at shows is an mc that Is going to cringe when there Is a crisis. People can actually read the mood and once they feel something is not right, the show can be over just like that. Schedule Make sure that you schedule your performances before time and be strict about time and also keep communication open so that your performers can be able to update you about their whereabouts. That’s my 2 cents Happy hosting

Month of May

May - and it is getting cold, the birds are migrating and we need to find the heater and the blankets. But before we do that, let us look at what is ‘cooking’ in May: World Goth Day is observed on 22 May. The Official World Goth Day site defines it as “a day where the goth scene gets to celebrate its own being, and an opportunity to make its presence known to the rest of the world”. World Goth Day celebrates the sub cultural aspects of the Goth subculture. Aspects of the culture like fashion, music and art are celebrated by fashion shows, art exhibitions and music performance. Many of the events feature local Goth bands, and some have taken on a charity aspect with events in the United Kingdom and Australia supporting favoured charities like the UK Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a charity that tries to curb prejudice and hatred against subcultures.

Tango no Sekku is one of the five annual ceremonies that were traditionally held at the Japanese imperial court called Gosekku. It is the Japanese equivalent of Double Fifth and was celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth moon in the lunar calendar or Chinese calendar. After Japan switched to the Gregorian calendar, the date was moved to May 5. Although it is not known precisely when this day started to be celebrated, it was probably during the reign of the Empress Suiko (593– 628 A.D.). In Japan. Until recently, Tango no Sekku was known as Boys’ Day while Girls’ Day (Hinamatsuri) was celebrated on March 3. In 1948, the government decreed this day to be a national holiday to celebrate the happiness of all children and to express gratitude toward mothers. It was renamed Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) and changed to include both boys and girls

Before this day, families raise the carp-shaped koinobori flags (carp because of the Chinese legend that a carp that swims upstream becomes a dragon, and the way the flags blow in the wind looks like they are swimming), one for each boy (or child), display a Kintarō doll usually riding on a large carp, and the traditional Japanese military helmet, kabuto.
