Welcome back to our current readers and welcome to our grade 10 students, starting in real school this year. Covid is still with us, but we are slowly getting into something new reality. It can never be the same, and that might just be good after all. This time we look at ‘goals’. How do we set long-term goals and how do we ensure we stay on track? Science is a part of this and this time we look at the James Webb telescope. This is huge! .... But also remember: it is Valentine’s on 14 February. Save up for chocolate and flowers! Good read!

2022 arrived! And it means a lot to all of us. We welcome our newest students – the grade 10. Grade 10 is such a fun year. It is not compulsory anymore and now it is based on your interests. It makes a difference. It might not be felt immediately, but trust me – life is about to get different. Grade 11 is another fun year. The ‘new’ has worn off and the last year has not arrived yet. However, it is possible to get something good out of grade 11. It is not just a ‘parking lot’. Try to use it as a test bed for interests. What do you want to do later? Leave the ‘boring’ day-to-day tasks and try to experiment with things. Go for a book club, start a sport, test yourself on something totally different (could be rock climbing or chess) or anything really. Because grade 12 will not offer you the time for this. Time is now! … and of course a welcome back to grade 12. This is it in so many ways, but that you will be bombarded with in the coming year! Welcome to all!

2022 - New school year brings new opportunities! Create realistic goals and achieve what you are going for… By Nadia Hearn – entrepreneur, purposeful mentor and trainer, national broadcast presenter, and speaker. Nadia Hearn is the founder of ‘Get-Published’. Welcome to your 2022 school year. High school is such an important time to build your educational base and emotional intelligence for what future adult life holds for you. Along with your own expectations and that of others about how you should behave, be more mature, accountable, and responsible? As if finding yourself, your voice, and truth is not enough! Being in high school comes with an expectation that you should know by now what your BEEG future will be and what the rest of your life as a successful adult will be like. Like you are a time traveler! And what exactly equals a successful adult anyway? What you should really know and find solace in is that none of us knew for certain what we wanted and who we wanted to become while in high school without harboring worry and doubts.

Surprise: no-one knows the future and neither do you! You won’t know who you’ll truly grow to become in your adult life at any stage in high school, not even on your final year. So, settle in, the journey is long. Please do stop the stress! Enough, stop this stressing about knowing everything (another myth) and prevent paralysing yourself with the pressure that comes with not wanting to make a mistake, or wasting any time, or telling yourself you’ll miss the boat. Whatever ‘that boat’ is that you are supposed to catch, the answer is simple: you don’t know, and you won’t know until you are living your life now and in the actual future. What you want to be doing is to get excited about your own life now, your unique life journey (no one can or will ever walk in your shoes), your opportunities for learning, facing challenges and exploring your own capabilities within your own truth of what you want for yourself when not pleasing others. This is the time to really invest your thinking and action in searching for richer life experiences, discovering your natural talents, learning new skills, looking at improving how you deal with hard times and challenges to learn from, and seeing the birth of new passion for what you choose to create and use your time on.

Powerful tips to get to your goals for 2022 Focus only on the now, and evaluate your long-term goals: Check that your goals are super realistic; you need to be able to start visualising yourself actual doing it and being there. Once you can believe it can be true you are already half-way to your goal. A BEEG goal is achieved by small, tiny actions, and a good plan that makes for mind-blowing achievements. If you look at three-to-five-year goal/s such as, “achieving good grades to go to varsity”, the mission is clear. Now, exactly how you do it is key to getting what you want for your future life. Create milestones along the path Using the example goal of “achieving good grades” you would break the goal into annual grade goals, being very specific per quarter what you want to achieve. For example: if you increase you average on each test and exam by only 3-5% higher per term, you can achieve the 15% better grade for the year for the subject in mind. Focus on where you are today and being truthful with yourself about what you take on. Most medical practitioners will agree that living in

the now is proven to decrease feelings of depression, and not being enough or doing enough. Focus on today by allocating time to create your plan of action. Set your goals and then break it down: daily, weekly, and monthly (per term) with actions and milestones. In closing, you have the power to create your life as you choose and want. Your actions every day create the outcomes one step closer to your long-term vision and goals, celebrate each step, each victory, each challenge as that is what will give you growth and teach you more about who you are in this life.

GOOD REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ENROLLING AS A STUDENT AT EKURHULENI EAST TVET COLLEGE: 1. We offer a wide selection of programmes: You need to use the time after you leave school to equip yourself with the skills that will make you employable. EEC TVET College offers vocational training of a high standard in many elds ICT, Tourism, Accounting, Secretarial, Hospitality, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering, Wholesale and Retail as well as a wide range of artisan trades that are recognised as being in high demand, e.g. Fitter and Turner, Welder, Boiler Maker, Air Conditioning Services Technician, Melter etc. 2. You can enrol as a student at EEC TVET College with Grade 9, 10, 11 and Grade 12 or equivalent: If you have passed the above grades, you qualify to enrol for the NC(V) National Certicate (Vocational) which will give you a Matric Equivalent Certicate in vocational subjects after three years. If you have already passed Grade 12, you could enrol for a Report 191, (N4 – N6) Nated courses. Each level takes six months so at the end of eighteen months you could have completed the theoretical aspect of your training. In order to get a National Diploma, you would have to have a further eighteen months in the workplace as an intern (for Business Studies) or twenty-four months for the Engineering Diploma. 3. You will have real-life practical experience in the workplace and exposure to hosting companies: A crucial reason why you should think about doing your training at EEC TVET College is that we believe that students “learn best by doing”. Whether it is in simulation rooms or in the electrical or mechanical workshops or in the real workplace, the theoretical and practical components of a TVET College curriculum have to be integrated. Students have to complete a period of Work Based Experience (WBE). This gives them actual real-life experience in the workplace and the chance to apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom. Those students who approach their WBE period professionally with a determination to learn as much as they can, enhance their chances of becoming employable. Qualifying students are also selected on the basis of their academic record, to participate in learnerships where they divide their time at the College between their theory classes and the practical components in the workplace with a company. They often have the opportunity to take their trade tests with that company and make contacts in the industry which could be helpful to them in the future. Students are encouraged to be proactive in marketing themselves and looking for placement opportunities using their own initiative. 4. Financial assistance for prospective students available:NSFAS bursaries (not loans that have to be repaid) are available to nancially needy students who are academically capable, pass their subjects and attend all their classes and practicals. 5. EEC TVET College is an accredited TVET College for programmesranging from Engineering, Business, ICT, Hospitality and Tourism to Occupational programmes. Occupational programmes will lead to apprenticeship and eventually artisanship. 6. In choosing your career you are making one of the most important decisions of your life:There are endless opportunities and possibilities that come with enrolling at EEC TVET College.

Well it’s the New Year again and we all have hope and aspirations for the year. For me, this is a personal one. I have goals. But I also understand that these goals might not happen at the time I wish and that is absolutely okay. The other thing to mention is that the goal post might also change in the process of time and that is also okay. Lastly, we need to acknowledge there is no definitive process behind achieving our goals.

personal vision.

I recently hosted and attended a vision board event with a dear friend of mine. Here, we hosted a couple of friends. How enlightening that was! But in the process, I learnt that all the goals we set for ourselves tie in to the bigger

I also learnt that goals are unique to us and the vision we have for our lives. These goals are not always tangible like : “I want to buy a car”,

instead they could be deepened to something like: “I need to be kinder to myself” or “To be more tolerant” or “To be content”. Those goals are still achievable and there are various ways in which someone can achieve that. For me, my goals are simple. Firstly, I want to finish my Master’s Degree. I have been working on it for a year now and I want to complete it. It is a journey and a half to be ‘Mastered’. I really hope that I can be able to do my best and hopefully pass it with a distinction. I also want to learn a new language, particularly Swahili or some other language. This is something I have been big on over the years. Last year, I was interested in learning mandarin and I was able to learn a lot. I also hope to travel within the country. I also want to be kinder to myself and improve daily where I can. Now, the question becomes: How to achieve the goals set? Set a plan out. For instance, if you want to travel, you would need the money. Some people save or travel using ‘workaways’. If you want to be kinder to yourself: in order to achieve that some people do daily affirmations or go to therapy. What remains clear is that setting goals is a personal practice and I believe it works. I believe people need to be patient with themselves when setting out to achieve the goals while understanding that the time it takes to achieve them may not be exactly when expected.

Masiziba Hadebe

Those new year resolutions are surely not the same as long-term goals (or short-term goals). Who do they fail so often? I found something here. There are many reasons, but I have tried to find the most interesting ones. First of all, we need to look at the timing. Somehow, we all seem to accept that we will in all likelihood fail. That is a bad start on it. The next one is why only at new year? Is it induced by all the festivities and now we believe it is time to get a ‘better’ life? What does the article say? Treating a marathon as a sprint We decide on a BIG thing. And fail. Because BIG things should be broken into manageable pieces which we can do – and succeed. The BIG thing is a simply too big to handle in one go.

You don’t believe in it This is a classic. We have had other of these resolutions. It never worked. And now we set out on another set of it. And we know we are going to fail anyway. But it feels good – the first few days. No support It is another one. If your surroundings treat your resolutions as just another fad this year, as all the other years, well, you may fail, again. It is a horrible one to try to explain to your surroundings that this year you are surely serious. To see how they snigger and know you will fail simply just makes it certain. Repeated failures break your confidence It is again one of those things where past experience will work against you. How many times have you failed in the past? This year will be different, for sure…. But… and that is where the problem comes in. Is there hope? Of course. First of all figure out why you want to achieve XYZ. Is it just something we all decide on or is it a real desire? (lose weight, etc). The next one is to break any serious resolution into bites we can handle. Now comes the tough part. Get it operational by having a time table for when what must be achieved – and be realistic. Changing habits could be a year-long process (or more). But it can be done. Happy 2022

The sports calendar gets crowded! We have just finished the summer Olympics (in Beijing) and now we have the winter Olympics. Well, yes. The 2020 summer got moved to last year. Now we are back at it. So, yes – it kicks off on 4 February and closes on 20 February. Despite Covid and despite all other problems and political interference. We can of course expect a fantastic show again. And I think we wish all participants a great experience. Remember: these people have trained for years and have focused their lives on this event. Let it all come together for them. Let it all be OK. There are specifics for this event: All arrival will be quarantine for 21 days before being moved inside the ‘bubble. Only Chinese can attend as spectators. No foreign visitors.

But it is going forward – somehow. It shows one or two things: we are gritting our teeth and facing down Covid. We choose to get normal and have a life! Surely, we adapt but we want to do things again. Is this important? I think it is more important than the actual competition. It is now a collective effort to show the world (and ou8rselves) the spirit of mankind. Never give up! 86 countries will be there and that is the world commitment to normality. We can and we will! We will see the usual disciplines represented. Skiing, slalom, cross-country, ice skating, speed skating, ice hockey and so on. New events have been proposed, but nothing is really cast in stone. One event which could be great fun is synchronized skating. That should be rather elegant and also something new in this world of ice. Let us just hope it all comes off in good style.

We have said ‘bye’ to the year 2021. Out with the old and in with the new! so before I go any further I would like to say ‘Happy New Year’ to all of you and welcome to 2022. As we all know, the past 2 years were very hectic and we got affected in a major way. However, like the saying goes “this too shall pass” and indeed it is passing. Though we are not fully out of the cold we are gradually getting there and a lot of people are putting back pieces of their lives and I’m happy to say that as artists we are also getting back what we missed out on in the past 2 years. Yes, everything is opening now and although we are still fighting the pandemic. we are slowly winning the battle and 2022 looks very promising. Towards the end of 2021 a lot of artists were getting bookings and for some of us it was a good way to end the year because it gave us an

opportunity to start planning for 2022 and get our ducks in a row. With that said it is go time and there is a lot that we are looking forward to when it comes to entertainment. Production houses are now open and are in search of new faces. Black brain and Ferguson films have online auditions, the South African music awards are open for 2022 submissions and a lot of artists are also in the studio in preparation for 2022. We just hope and pray that this year brings us more opportunities, good music and entertainment and a lots of gigs. But will the music change? What could be a trend for 2022 and beyond? My opinion is that we will see music and raps inspired by how we have handled Covid. It is inevitable. Covid has had too big an impact on our lives to be ignored. … and now it is going to be interesting to see if it is ‘doom and gloom’ or life-inspiring things we will get to listen to. Let me venture a guess. It will be about life! We are tired of ‘doom and gloom’. Your guess?

Lezy de Yong

Will the trends of book writing change in this new era? “Every writer dreams of writing a book that will touch people” says Bruce Feiler. Trends, most of the time, are things that are popular at that moment. If you follow them business-wise you can make a lot of money, even as a writer. Before business-minded people decides to come up with an idea, they look at trends which then will boost their sales. Although authors are creative thinkers and writers, we are also categorized in the list of businesspeople because – after all – we also benefit from our intellectual properties.

The end of 2019 to 2021 has brought us so much change in our lives, from a lockdown, loss of relatives, businesses, jobs and so forth. Looking at this from a writer’s view these are latest trends that one could write a book about since people can relate to these tragic events very well. To some it might even bring healing from their traumas. My take about books that will trend from now to months or even years to come are trends about novels based on doom and gloom more than life-confirming things. Doom and gloom are sad and tragic events, and this topic can be very broad and used to help a lot of people to see the problems and maybe also see solutions. Even though life-confirming things can be written about, I think we will see much more doom and gloom because it is the latest trend. Above all I would also like to state that as much as writing is an art and a gift, proper research needs to be done before one could decide what to write about. This is called the purpose of the book which will be based on the message you want to deliver, so as the doom and gloom still trends, dear writer, please grab that pen and start writing.

New Exhibitions

We added two new exhibitions to our collection on the floor. The 4IR and Mirror Maze exhibitions

4IR Exhibition The 4IR exhibition currently hosts the Humanoids (two small ones and the big one called Pepper), Virtual reality Station, Augmented Reality and the interactive displays integrated with of a number of TV screens. This concept is through the touch screen located at the entrance to the center. Interactive display section has been created where visitors are encouraged to use traditional touch screens to immerse themselves in games and content around Science Technology Engineering and Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Children are provided with the opportunity to play games to train their analytical ability, improve their ability to solve puzzles and chal-

lenges. They are also challenged to explore more traditional content style, such as exploration of subjects including how Artificial Intelligence works, Machine Learning, how data transfers over networks etc. Science Exploration While traditional science teaching has complex challenges around logistics, safety and costs. VR has none of these limitations. Experiments are done as often as needed with no physical costs of materials or safety concerns. Students can learn about physics and chemistry, life science etc. in a safe environment. Within VR learning occurs without any distract but with full immersion. Learning and understanding mathematics becomes easier and more fun inside of VR due to the nature of games and how they are designed. This is designed to make learning and exploration real fun especially for little ones. Wide learning opportunities exist through this exhibition, children have many prospects to learn on, e.g. google earth exploration experience. With Google Earth VR, children can travel to almost any place in the world. They can fly all over the world and explore any city, any monument and landmark anywhere in the world. The exhibition has two different types of humanoids the small one (called Sanbot Max and the Bigger one called Pepper). The Sanbot Max robot was designed to be implemented into numerous kinds of business scenarios, providing customers and staff members with intelligent and efficient services. Pepper is a semi-humanoid robot, which means that a human has to control it. It is designed with the ability to read emotions. Pepper recognizes faces and basic human emotion.

Drones and Mirror Maze Drones Pilots at the Clubhouse Did you know that the Clubhouse has three certified drone pilots? They also have 10 DJI Tell drones that they will used for their drone course. They are currently putting together content for the said course. In addition, the Clubhouse offers programmes such as Teach Fundamentals of drones, real-life applications of drones: namely surveillance using object identification and tracking to videography for commercials and other media use. This includes python programming that covers drone automation.

Mirror Maze Exhibit A mirror is an object that reflects an image. Light that bounces off a mirror will show an image of whatever is in front of it, when focused through the lens of the eye or a camera. Mirrors reverse the direction of the image in an equal yet opposite angle from which the light shines upon it. This allows the viewer to see themselves or objects behind them, or even objects that are at an angle from them but out of their field of view, such as around a corner. Natural mirrors prehistoric times, water, but people turing mirrors out rials for thousands metals, and glass. metals like silver often used due to applied as a thin cause of its natuhard surface.

A maze is a path or collection of paths, typically from an entrance to a goal. The word is used to refer both to branching tour puzzles through which the solver must find a route, and to simpler non-branching patterns that lead unambiguously through a convoluted layout to a goal. The pathways and walls in a maze are typically fixed, but puzzles in which the walls and paths can change during the game are also categorised as mazes or tour puzzles Mirror Maze The mirror maze itself is a pattern, combining several characteristics of geometric patterns: repetition, symmetry and tessellation using repeated equilateral triangles. These triangles fit together without any gaps or overlaps, creating a tessellation. Mirrored surfaces all around reflect the pattern so that it repeats and appears infinite.

The relationship between milk and humans! Milk is considered a very important food source for human beings. This important relationship dates to at least 6000 years ago. Although there are various types of ‘milk’ in existence, this article focuses on cow milk. So how did ancient human beings adapt to drinking milk? In order to understand the adaptation. I would like to first start by explaining what the main difference between ingestion and digestion is. Ingestion is the taking of food into the body whereas digestion is the breakdown of food that can then be absorbed by the body. This article focuses on the digestion of milk by the Ancients. The key word then becomes lactose tolerance which has become a popular theme when discussing milk as a food source. But before we get there, there is a need to understand why humans drank milk in the first place m. The ‘why’ has left some contradicting perspectives, especially about the timeline and place of origin.

To illustrate, some people believe that ancients drank milk as a source of nutrients. However, opposing views say that this cannot be the case as ancient humans had vast sources of nutrients. The other interesting view is that at some point (in the iron age) , milk was a matter of life and death, especially if the water available was not clean. Even though the why is somehow ‘foggy’ the when seems to be clearer. For instance, scientific evidence has emerged that links people from modern Kenya and Sudan to the earliest ingestion of milk products, beginning at least 6000 years ago. Now that we know the ‘why’ and the ‘when’ regarding the relationship between Milk and Humans, the next part is the digestion. Was it easy for ancient humans to digest the milk? Especially if you look at milk as a substance. Milk as substance contains a type of sugar called lactose. This is distinct from other sugars found in fruit for instance. Humans, as infants or babies, produce a special enzyme called lactase that enables the digestion of the mother’s milk. But after some time (in development), the production ceases, deeming the human without lactase, to not being able digest the lactose in milk.

The ability to digest milk as an adult developed fairly recently, likely in the past 6000 years. A handful of mutations allows adults to produce the enzyme lactase, which can break down the milk sugar lactose. Genes that enable what is called lactase persistence are widespread in modern Africa, according to a report titled: “Humans were drinking milk before they could digest it” by Andrew Curry. The report further mentions the role by-products like cheese played in digestion. “The proteins could have come from milk, cheese, or fermented milk products like yogurt, which are common in Africa today. Fermentation is a strategy some cultures use to break down milk sugars before consuming them, which may make it easier for people without the adaptation to consume milk products without drinking raw milk” the report further states. In other words, by turning the milk into a secondary product like cheese or yogurt coupled with increasing consumption of the products results in better digestion of milk generally.

In addition, archaeologists have found fragments of pottery in what is now Croatia. They carried fatty acids, suggesting that the pottery had been used to separate curds from whey: a crucial step in making cheese. If that is correct (and the interpretation has been questioned), people were making cheese in southern Europe 7,200 years ago which could even suggest an earlier date for the ingestion of milk. It remains clear that the milk relationship with humans is an in depth relationship that requires more research and understanding. Especially if (at some point in history), it meant life and death in conditions of unclean water and famine. This particular aspect, when investigated further, could be a solution to similar problems today, like water insecurity or even be an alternative to water itself for the human body.

What is Forensic Auditing? Auditing is the inspection of a company’s record books followed by a physical count of stock recorded in these books to ensure all information is recorded accurately and is complete. This is to ensure that all accounting practices and legal aspects have been adhered to. So then, what is Forensic auditing? Perhaps the first thing that pops up in mind after hearing the word Forensic, is a crime scene populated by individuals – Forensic scientists – wearing white jumpsuits, gloves, and face masks; like in CSI. But with regards to Forensic auditing, protective clothing is not necessary as the forensic auditors will now be dealing with financial crimes such as corruption, bribery, fraud, and money laundering. These individuals investigate legal and financial documents to check suspicions of fraudulent acts within a company. A forensic auditor may sometimes be hired by a company to prevent any fraudulent activities from occurring.

In cases where embezzlement has occurred within a company, forensic auditors are employed to uncover and collect any evidence that proves the fraudster’s identity, reveal the details of the fraud, the type of financial damages suffered, and the parties affected by the fraud. They then present their findings to the company, and also to the court should the case go on trial. The YouTube link here demonstrates how the forensic accountant, similar to the forensic auditor, performs in court. Ths is the trial of Pete Beck in the US What does it take to become a forensic auditor? To be able to register for the postgraduate diploma in forensic auditing offered at the University of South Africa (UNISA), you need to have a bachelor’s degree with majors in Financial Accounting or Accounting and external auditing or internal auditing. A Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) can also qualify you to register for the forensic auditing qualification. This will then qualify you to write the Certified Fraud Examiners’ (CFE) examinations and also do special work training to obtain professional licensure in the forensic auditing field. The role of the forensic auditor is highly valuable to companies concerning the detection and prevention of fraud, as fraud prevention increases confidence and reduces financial loss within a company. Is forensic auditing for you?

It is a yearly exercise to predict what the year ahead will bring. A lot of it is probably not ‘predictions’ but more knowledge about the world. Of course we can use tea leaves and Tarok cards and (Nostradamus), but that is theatre. Let us try and look at what ‘clever’ people are saying abut 2022. I found something here: Economic growth: We can expect that the economy is bouncing back. There is so much demand for services that we even now have problems supplying. This trend will surely continue in 2022. The international trucking world is groaning under the pressure and the container ports are full. As the supply side is easing up, we should see a world growth of anything between 4-10% pa. It might spark inflation as well, but that will be a lesser price to pay. Geopolitical tension. There are flash points: Iran and Israel are on some sort of collision course. The international community must somehow get POA to work again as the first thing. From there Iran might be welcomed back into society.

Eastern Europe has its ow dynamic. Ukraine vs Russia and Russia vs Belarus and anything else does not bode well. It is probably true that Ukraine’s income will get reduced via Nordstream 2 gas pipeline to Germany, but sufficient compensation has been offered. How will it pan out: Ukraine will have to understand that the days of holding anyone to ransom are over and that their internal problems cannot be solved by others. EU might have to ‘guide’ them into a far more democratic and participating world. China is another flashpoint. China may have to realise that they cannot both be ‘big’ and dominate. The markets are important, but China is only one player. Online shopping is here to stay. We may see that a high percentage of our shopping wil be online. It is just a way of shopping, even down to groceries. It also means that we will now be paying for delivery services and other value-add services. It will not be just buying groceries. We demand more and we will pay for it. With the growing salaries our world will be more ‘worker’ influenced. Electric cars: This is the year. The commitments have been made.

Nostradamus anyone? I found this: Nostradamus can be used to predict anything from JFK to ingrown toenails. The asteroid is coming! “Fire do I see that from the sky shall fall” Now that is clear! So we are going to get hit by one. Except: the next close encounter with anything asteroid is in 2029, but hey, a few years between friends? War in France: “The invasion of France by a threat from the east is a recurring theme throughout Nostradamus’ predictions, but the following prediction is speculated to be referring to the spring of 2022: “Blue-head shall white-head harm in such degree As France’s good to both shall e’er amount.” Maybe it is the world cup in 2022? On the other hand, Nostradamus was very interested in France and its downfall (or upfall?).

Nobody has really figured this one out yet, but there is hope.. Inflation and things: “Another stark possibility that Nostradamus warns against is the rising prices in a failing economy. Nostradamus stated: “No abbots, monks, no novices to learn; Honey shall cost far more than candle-wax” “So high the price of wheat, That man is stirred His fellow man to eat in his despair” Except … the economy is growing. And the salaries are rising. And Omicron might be the end of Covid. Of course we could see a few cannibals here and there, but doubtful if it will ever be a popular dish in general. Global warming: “Perhaps not a surprise, given the climate over the past few years, but rising sea temperatures were something that Nostradamus predicted in 1555. “Like the sun the head shall sear the shining sea: The Black Sea’s living fish shall all but boil. When Rhodes and Genoa Half-starved shall be The local folk to cut them up shall toil.” There is something here. But it is not exactly hard to predict is it? Artificial intelligence: “The Moon in the full of night over the high mountain, The new sage with a lone brain sees it: By his disciples invited to be immortal, Eyes to the south. Hands in bosoms, bodies in the fire.” OK, so he predicted the rise of the robot and artificial intelligence.. Man, he was clever.

Webb space telescope We have all heard of the Hubble telescope I think. The one with the most fantastic pics of the galaxies and space in general. We may also have heard of the successor to Hubble: The James Webb telescope. This new one is going to be even more fantastic in its aim, but it has had a rather turbulent development cycle. How did it all begin? (a lot of this is inspired by Wiki and other sources too numerous to name). Let us cast our memory back to the launch of Hubble. It was proclaimed as the most significant event in space telescopes. Hubble launched in 1990, but there was a problem: Hubble was ‘near-sighted’! There was a slight flaw in the mirror. However, it got corrected three years later and Hubble became the darling of space telescopes. The consequence was, however, that a committee started to look at ‘what

after Hubble’’ scenarios. 1997 saw the first design goals being specified and finally 1999 saw the development contracts being awarded. Launch was planned for 2007. Cost was estimated at $500 million. However, nothing goes according to plan. 2005 saw a re-planning and re-design study and now the cost went to $4,5 bn and launch in 2013. Slowly it crawled along its path. 2011 saw the engineering phases being finalized. But there were a few hiccups. The review pointed out that the project had some 344 potential ‘single-point-of-failure’. These are tasks that must be successful as there is no alternative in space. If any one should fail, the entire project might fail. It could be a simple valve must open and if it does not, the solar panel cannot deploy and there will be no power!. Finally, $9,8 bn later it has finally launched! Everybody is holding their breath and will do so for the next many months as Webb is spreading its wings (or panels), unfolding itself, travelling to its final orbit, calibrating and ready for action. Latest is that the mirrors are unfolding according to design and that (so far) no problems encountered. The little thing about this is that whereas Hubble was sitting in low-earth orbit and could be reached by the shuttle, Webb is sitting at one of the Le Grange points. 1,5 million km away! And cannot be reached No chance of a repair trip. It just has to work.

Webb has some impressive features. We could name a lot of it, but let us focus on what Webb is supposed to be doing. OK, a little bit to ‘dazzle’ us: Webb is going to work at a temperature of some 50k or less. Reason? Otherwise ‘heat’ can interfere’. It is sitting at Le Grange point L2 to ensure no interference from gravity and so on. It is all very scientific and calculated. What will Webb do: The James Webb Space Telescope has four key goals: • to search for light from the first stars and galaxies that formed in the Universe after the Big Bang • to study the formation and evolution of galaxies • to understand the formation of stars and planetary systems • to study planetary systems and the origins of life. Does it sound boring? Webb gives us the chance to ‘see’ to the very beginning of time.

To see where it all started. It is not just about squinting at a new star. It is about where ‘life’ comes from. A lot of ‘new’ theories will have to be relooked. As much as Hubble shocked the world when he proved that the universe is expanding at an accelerating pace, Webb, might start to ‘rock the boat’ when we look at the prevalent theory of the universe at 13,6 billion years old and started in the ‘big bang’. One of the inherent ‘problems’ with the big ban theory is the notion of ‘inflation’. At time = 0, the theory says that the laws of physics could not exists (Plank time). And then suddenly – bang! And now out of nothing the universe ‘inflates’ and gets populated with matter. And the laws of physics are there. Webb, might look back to the time of t = 0,00 (something) and prove new things? Maybe we can get to grips with dark energy and dark matter as well? It must come from somewhere and that could easily be that E=mc2 does not distinguish between dark energy and ‘our’ energy. Fascinating new world we embark on.

February = Wiki says: Valentine’s Day, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14. It originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country. We all know the story: Saint Valentine of Rome was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, Saint Valentine healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, and before his execution, he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. It does bring tears to my eyes as well. However, it is not actually the truth. But it is a good story anyway. Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. Many parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day, albeit on July 6 and July 30, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna. So, it is not just….

Valentine’s But hey, there are other traditions as well: In Norfolk, a character called ‘Jack’ Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. Although he was leaving treats, many children were scared of this mystical person. In Slovenia, Saint Valentine or Zdravko was one of the saints of spring, the saint of good health and the patron of beekeepers and pilgrims. A proverb says that “Saint Valentine brings the keys of roots”. Plants and flowers start to grow on this day. It has been celebrated as the day when the first work in the vineyards and in the fields commences.

I know it is Valentine month. But we always do that. Let us try something new (ab)normal: Valentine will be next year, so what is February otherwise all about? February has always been an odd month. It has been used to ‘re-align’ the calendars to the seasons. But it really did not have a separate life. Of course it all goes back to roman times (wiki!): “January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period.

when it became the second month.

They were added by Numa Pompilius about 713 BC. February remained the last month of the calendar year until the time of the decemvirs (c. 450 BC),

At certain times February was truncated to 23 or 24 days, and a 27-day intercalary month, Intercalaris, was occasionally inserted immediately after February to realign the year with the seasons In essence: it was used to compensate. But February was never popular, at least not if we look at the different names (and meanings) February has had. There were several Roman festive days in February, but the best part does not correspond to anything anymore.

February was known as ‘mud month’ in old English (how quant!) or Kale-Monath, meaning cabbage month. Even better. True that winter cabbage is very delicious (not!), but even so? Who would like to be born in the month of the cabbage? A good one is “In Finnish, the month is called helmikuu, meaning “month of the pearl”; when snow melts on tree branches, it forms droplets, and as these freeze again, they are like pearls of ice. That is poetry. There are a few notable events:

Autism Sunday (2nd Sunday) was first held in 2002 during Autism Awareness Year in the United Kingdom.

International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. Enjoy February!
