August means that the school year somehow - is starting to get finished. It was again a roller-coaster but that we are used to now. The big question now is: What’s next... after high-school. We have our yearly address guide of all TVETs and universities for you. As much as we can, we have verified telephone numbers and website, but some of it might not be there after all. Over to you. We have asked our writers to tell us about how they made their career choices. Interesting stuff. Good Read!

It is time to again look at the big question: ‘What’s next … after Highschool’ This year is again going to be a challenge, but that is beyond our control. We have aired that Open-Day activities are important. They are not necessarily limited to grade 12. As a matter of fact, start finding out your own ‘what next’ and prepare. We have asked our writers what motivated them. Was it money? Interest? Coincidence? It is always different to chart your life well in advance. We have provided our extensive list of tertiary institutions. As much as we have been able to, the websites are confirmed, but … check for yourself. Is choosing the next step in life always easy? Probably not, and that is why we have found some expert advise and experiences. Applying science to a choice is never a bad idea, but we also believe that it all goes with interest. Otherwise we end up as a friend of mine: he became an admin clerk at an airline because that was the only one who offered him a job (200 applications later). He did fall in love with the job and it turned out to be a success-story. But try to apply science to it anyway - lol. Good luck!

Why a career in Agric Science may be an option There are numerous fields one can choose from when considering a career. A career in the very broad Agricultural sector is one that is not only appealing but in fact needed in the world. Let us explore why. Firstly, agriculture-driven growth, poverty reduction, and food security are at risk all because of climate change. Climate change could cut crop yields, especially in the world’s most food-insecure regions resulting in people going hungry. However, this can be mitigated by professionals within the agricultural science sector resulting in guaranteed opportunities for them. To illustrate, agriculture an important world. This much as we climate change in the Agriculis also responsible change. After all, agland use change are respongreenhouse gas emissions.
climate smart is becoming concept in the is because as want to say causes problems ture, the sector for causing climate riculture, forestry and sible for about 25 percent of
Climate smart agriculture addresses how to manage agricultural sys-
tems to meet the nutritional needs of a growing population while both building resiliency to climate change and using agriculture as a solution to our climate crisis. The three main objective of climate smart agriculture are to increase agricultural productivity and incomes, adapt to and build resiliency to climate change; and finally, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Besides guaranteed opportunities in the sector, a career in agriculture might be appealing because most people do not consider agriculture as a modern or advanced business but the technology in this division is actually surprisingly advanced. Millions of farmers use software and even modern apps to boost productivity, to market more effectively, to solve communication problems and for general business management. In other words, the agricultural sector is one of the sectors that increase productivity using technology. Mbali Nwoko, a crop farmer on living land once said that even though technology in the agricultural sector makes some jobs absolute, it creates jobs somewhere else in the value chain. That is why the sector will always advance. As icing on the cake, income or earning potential in the sector is relatively good for the especially in demand careers such as Agricultural Engineers, Veterinary practitioners etc. However, one thing is for sure, the agricultural science field has advanced in so many ways that numerous opportunities have sprouted over time making it more appealing while ensuring that solutions to our biggest problems are provided.

The world i
Vocational and sho There are many things we need to adjust to in South Africa. We are quickly progressing towards the ‘global village’ and that goes for types of education as well. My opinion: The white paper from Blade was the major shift in priorities. The focus became more broad and I think tried to catch up with what else is happening. It is not university or nothing. Let us look at vocational training and short-term courses outside of university I have found an interesting article here: (*) This is the European Union view of education 2020-2030. And let it be said: we need to take into account what is going on in Europe!
VET as work-based/dual initial training – The German model
This is where students are both at a school and employed (and paid!) at a workplace. The goal is to provide the dualism of using what has been taught in a practical sense.
VET as initial vocational training – the Swedish model This is class room training. But the training regime can be broader and is not directly linked to a specific occupation (workplace).
VET as further training – The Irish model
On-the-job training for all ages, really. Goal is to provide the industry with skilled workers
VET as life-long learning As it says on the tin.
is changing
ort-term educations The focus in Europe in the 2020-2030 time frame will be on • Practical skills • Diversification: more age groups and more diverse fields • Access to university level education through vocational skills • Improved perception of vocational education What they surely see is a far heavier integration of trade unions, government policy goals and industry needs. They are not averse to challenges experienced as too narrow a focus may be optimal for industry but not for the individual person in a job-hopping environment. And the other way as well. So what do we do in South Africa? I think we are well underway to have the type of educational offerings that are world-standard – at least aligned with what we see as best practice in other countries. The entire world will then look different after Matric: • TVETs to provide a practical education and a certificate that proves it. This is the new world of getting a job. • SETAs to ensure that skills are maintained in a job-situation • Universities to provide the academic environment that any society needs to go forward • Private colleges have a role in all of this as well: provide both short-terms and long-term courses ensuring that South Africa has the skill set required in this world. The big WHAT NEXT .. after high School This is the big What Next list. It is as comprehensive as we can make it. The university list is OK. all the websites are there, and it is all working. The TVET’s are there, but not all websites are working. Please check it yourself without blaming me. The telephone numbers are listed as per government websites, but alas, not all working. All info is coming from government websites and from our own ‘tests’. A word of advise: This is all the government listed entities. BUT there are a lot of private schools as well, too numerous to list. These are the likes of Damelin, Boston, etc etc. Just make sure that the one you are interested in is çertified’. In essence: if in doubt, phone Department of Higher Education. Not difficult really. GOOD LUCK!

New Exhibitions
We added two new exhibitions to our collection on the floor. The 4IR and Mirror Maze exhibitions
4IR Exhibition The 4IR exhibition currently hosts the Humanoids (two small ones and the big one called Pepper), Virtual reality Station, Augmented Reality and the interactive displays integrated with of a number of TV screens. This concept is through the touch screen located at the entrance to the center. Interactive display section has been created where visitors are encouraged to use traditional touch screens to immerse themselves in games and content around Science Technology Engineering and Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).
Children are provided with the opportunity to play games to train their analytical ability, improve their ability to solve puzzles and chal-
lenges. They are also challenged to explore more traditional content style, such as exploration of subjects including how Artificial Intelligence works, Machine Learning, how data transfers over networks etc. Science Exploration While traditional science teaching has complex challenges around logistics, safety and costs. VR has none of these limitations. Experiments are done as often as needed with no physical costs of materials or safety concerns. Students can learn about physics and chemistry, life science etc. in a safe environment. Within VR learning occurs without any distract but with full immersion. Learning and understanding mathematics becomes easier and more fun inside of VR due to the nature of games and how they are designed. This is designed to make learning and exploration real fun especially for little ones. Wide learning opportunities exist through this exhibition, children have many prospects to learn on, e.g. google earth exploration experience. With Google Earth VR, children can travel to almost any place in the world. They can fly all over the world and explore any city, any monument and landmark anywhere in the world. The exhibition has two different types of humanoids the small one (called Sanbot Max and the Bigger one called Pepper). The Sanbot Max robot was designed to be implemented into numerous kinds of business scenarios, providing customers and staff members with intelligent and efficient services. Pepper is a semi-humanoid robot, which means that a human has to control it. It is designed with the ability to read emotions. Pepper recognizes faces and basic human emotion.
Drones and Mirror Maze Drones Pilots at the Clubhouse Did you know that the Clubhouse has three certified drone pilots? They also have 10 DJI Tell drones that they will used for their drone course. They are currently putting together content for the said course. In addition, the Clubhouse offers programmes such as Teach Fundamentals of drones, real-life applications of drones: namely surveillance using object identification and tracking to videography for commercials and other media use. This includes python programming that covers drone automation.
Mirror Maze Exhibit A mirror is an object that reflects an image. Light that bounces off a mirror will show an image of whatever is in front of it, when focused through the lens of the eye or a camera. Mirrors reverse the direction of the image in an equal yet opposite angle from which the light shines upon it. This allows the viewer to see themselves or objects behind them, or even objects that are at an angle from them but out of their field of view, such as around a corner. Natural mirrors prehistoric times, water, but people turing mirrors out rials for thousands metals, and glass. metals like silver often used due to applied as a thin cause of its natuhard surface.

A maze is a path or collection of paths, typically from an entrance to a goal. The word is used to refer both to branching tour puzzles through which the solver must find a route, and to simpler non-branching patterns that lead unambiguously through a convoluted layout to a goal. The pathways and walls in a maze are typically fixed, but puzzles in which the walls and paths can change during the game are also categorised as mazes or tour puzzles Mirror Maze The mirror maze itself is a pattern, combining several characteristics of geometric patterns: repetition, symmetry and tessellation using repeated equilateral triangles. These triangles fit together without any gaps or overlaps, creating a tessellation. Mirrored surfaces all around reflect the pattern so that it repeats and appears infinite.
Does Climate change have a silver lining? Climate change is a term that is on everybody’s tongue. However, is there some hope or some sort of silver lining with regards to the phenomenon? To understand this, we have to go back in time. Climate change is not new, but it is new that it is now not due to natural causes, but because of human activity. Let us look at one recent change: “A Year Without a Summer”. The year 1816 was literally a year without a summer across much of the Northern Hemisphere, throughout not only North America but also Northern Europe and parts of Asia. The extension of cold weather proved to be detrimental with crippled food production, crop failures and food shortages and looting became prominent in that time. The cause? The massive 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in April in Indonesia which spewed out tons and tons of Sulphur and ash. However, if one looks properly at the year with no summer, we would see that it was not the first time it could have happened. In fact, scientists seem to agree that human-induced climate change began in the early 1800s and is not a new process.
On the other hand, the scientists seem to agree that the earth’s climate has changed naturally over the past 650,000 years, moving in and out of ice ages and warm periods. As it is clear that the climate has been changing for thousands of years, there must have been some adaptations along the way. Interestingly, there are some examples to cite, showing that climate change may not be all doom and gloom. To illustrate, findings by a research study by the Washington University indicate that plants with some types of responses, like making their leaves thicker, will ultimately grow better in tropical forests than their competitors. In other words, thicker-leaved tropical plants may flourish under climate change with rising temperatures, which could be good news for us all. However, scientists within the study agree that there is a lot more research that can be done to show how various plants are responding and adapting to climate change. A Separate research led by Stanford University found how some corals can quickly switch on or off certain genes in order to survive in warmer-than-average tidal waters. The research team discovered corals can adjust their internal functions to tolerate hot water 50 times faster than they would adapt through evolutionary change alone.
Scientist from the University of California studied alpine chipmunks living in Yosemite National Park and found that over 100 years the animals have moved to higher altitudes as the average temperature of the park has risen by 3°C. A 2011 review of data on hundreds of moving species found an average shift to higher altitudes of 36 feet (11 metres) per decade and an average shift to higher latitudes of about 10.5 miles (17 km) per decade. These are but limited examples (in other words the list is not exhaustible) of the adaptation of nature to climate change. Adaptation is possible because climate change is a phenomenon that is occurring at all times. Even a year with no summer shows that animals and plants have been adapting. Therefore, as much as climate change proves to be detrimental, the phenomenon has a silver lining.

Here is for once something new. Inspired from here. People with truckloads of money ‘competing’ in an area where the money-requirement is massive and the reward is … fame? On-up on another billionaire? Or a life-long dream fulfilled? Let us look at the background. NASA is not the only one flying people into space. It is a bit crowded up there with all the state-sponsored institutions doing a lot of things. We of course know about NASA and the Europeans (ESA) and the Russians and the Chinese. But these are all state initiatives. Now we have Sir Richard and Bezoz both going into space on their own space ships. We should really recognise three ‘space barons’: Elon Musk, Sir Richard and Bezoz. However, there are some differences in all of this. Elon Musk and SpaceX are far ahead of the game. SpaceX has developed a variety of heavy-lift rockets, having contracts with NASA and performing crew-missions to ISS. What is the goal of SpaceX? To populate space – first the moon and ultimately Mars. As Musk is saying: “I would like to die on Mars, just not on impact”.
Musk is really driving the space agenda in this regard. Why? He is successfully delivering at a reasonable cost. Sir Richard and his Virgin-named companies are money-spinners. It means that he can turn to another business venture: space tourism. Just like Bezoz from Amazon. Is it then all about a new business? Catering to the super-rich, fulfilling their dream of a trip to space and taking good money in the process? I do (personally) believe it is much more than that. But … Neither Bezoz nor Branson are exactly shy of creating publicity. And neither are averse to making money on a new venture. Where Musk looks a bit ‘jaded’ (as though he has now proven it all), Sir Richard and Bezoz still have a long way to go. They now need to sell tickets to space. And here is the catch: for how long will it be fun for a very rich person to pay $28 million for 11 minutes in space? Is there any entertainment going with it? Or when the Kardashians have done it, it is on to the next thing? A trip to the Mariana Trench with Ballard? Musk will get to mars, no doubt about that, Bezoz has plans on a lunar base. But can we see the Virgin Galactic business plan carry on for another ten years?
The Space Barons Suddenly we also have a lot of critics claiming that it is obscene of the space barons to waste so much money when we are fighting an epidemic, hunger, climate change and a lot more. All of that money could be ploughed into developments for the good of all. Well, yes. Here is my take on it: It is their money. They have earned it. And who says it is wasted efforts? Space tourism is reality. And the reality is also that there are people willing to pay a lot for an adventure. Let us have a look at the spaceships. There are real differences here. Virgin Galactic: SpaceShip Two Here we have a rather traditional airliner look. A winged aircraft with normal seats on-board. A pilot who has full control of the flight. It is heaved up to some 10-15 km as the payload of the launch aircraft
(White Knight) and then released. The spaceship then powers up to some 80-90 km into space before returning to land as any normal business jet. However, the launch platform (White Knight) is a technological marvel. And SpaceShip Two is designed for travellers and tourists. It looks like a business jet. It must feel like something out of this world (‘scuse the punt). The attraction is to be in zero-gravity for a while and that not many people have done this before. The price will probably reflect this, so we are not talking the super-rich, but just plain wealthy people as the potential audience. Blue Origin: What Bezoz has come up with a vastly different. Here we are looking at a real rocket. With a capsule on top – just like SpaceX. The rocket – New Shephard – is one massive thing. It is a one-stage rocket and has as the payload the crew capsule. There are no pilots on board. It is all automated. You walk in, sit down and enjoy the trip. There are technology differences to SpaceX, but in essence the principles are the same. What are the future developments of either base? SpaceShip Two will (in my opinion) stay as a tourism transporter. Blue Origin might evolve into crewed missions to the Moon, but there will be the need for a quantum leap.
Pets and human have a long history together. But how closely have we grown over the last thousands of years? Of course the dog is ‘man’s best friend’ but can a cat not be the same? We have a lot of preconceived ideas regarding our pets; hence this little note. What about having a wolf as a pet? No? I found something intriguing here: Dogs and humans have been around each other for more than 14,000 years, so maybe something has rubbed off? I quote from the above: “A previous study found that young domestic puppies have “early emerging skills to cooperate (and) communicate with humans,” said the current study’s senior author Brian Hare, a professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University in North Carolina. But did dogs develop those traits through evolution or is it a product of thousands of years of domestication? The new study, Hare says, shows the “early emerging skills that seem to be heritable really are a product of domestication, because wolves don’t
have that same development or pattern of development.” So Hare and his team compared 44 dog puppies and 37 wolf puppies -- from the Wildlife Science Center in Minnesota -- that were all between five and 18 weeks old. Ten to 11 days after the wolves’ births, they were raised by intimate, round-the-clock human contact, including being fed by their caregivers’ hands and sleeping in their caregivers’ beds each night. The dog puppies, however, lived with their mothers until weaning at around 6 weeks old, and with their littermates until roughly 8 weeks old before they were sent to live with human families. During their first six to eight weeks of life, the dogs’ only interactions with humans were when humans had to do brief caretaking tasks. “With the dog puppies we worked with, if you walk into their enclosure, they gather around and want to climb on you and lick your face, whereas most of the wolf puppies run to the corner and hide,” Salomons said. And when the researchers presented food in sealed containers, the wolves relied on themselves to figure out how to access the food, whereas the dogs more often looked to humans for help. Dogs typically look to a ‘leader’ to emulate and that is where a lot of the basics of bonding takes place. If a dog sees that this is the way of being a dog, well, there we have your best friend!
I found something funny about the eternal ‘cat or dog’ as a pet question here: Dogs are pack animals. They like to have a ‘leader’ – the alpha dog. The one that in essence shows them what a dog is supposed to be. This is also the reason that they form bonds and are social. They like the pack life. It also means that they depend on the family for food and shelter and a lot of other ‘social’ things. Dogs are like small children in many ways. Now, we all know cats are different (we have a cat – and no, you cannot ‘own’ a cat). Cats are lone hunters (except lions). They can do it all themselves without a ‘pack’. That makes them much more independent. “For domestic cats, these instincts make them much more independent than dogs. This independence may make them seem aloof. They often sleep during the day and like to roam the house at night”
“Cats are capable of developing extremely strong bonds with their people. Cats are also highly intelligent creatures, and while they have a hunter’s mentality encoded in their DNA they also know who feeds them and provides them with play. While cats might not be as affectionate as dogs at first, overtime cats can develop quite the liking to their human parent fully equipped with a snuggling purr machine movie night. “When it comes to cat vs. dog training, dogs are generally the easier of the two to train. A dog’s pack mentality makes him ready to follow a leader and makes him generally more obedient by nature. Typically, dog training is a process of teaching and reinforcing commands that help you communicate your desires to your dog. Dogs are so eager to please that they’re happy to meet those desires. Training a cat? LOL Choosing? Look at yourself- what type of companion do you like? … and all pets are individuals anyway!

Why music, gigs and entertainment? I know this my sound like a cliché but music chose me and - to be honest - it not only chose me, but it also saved my life. We didn’t have a lot in my family when I grew up, but music was one thing that kept us together. Being raised by my Grandparents was amazing because they were both artists. My grandfather was a conductor of a choir and my grandmother was a designer and I believe that the love I have for entertainment came from them. I was always encouraged to in school and with my activities (and plus father was a bit all pushed me to do my best. When I changed and came to for my high years - all the way Polokwane - I was from the other kids: spoke to even how I conwhich opened room for other

I think that is when I developed the love for writing poetry. On top of, at that time, I knew I could sing, but it was so natural that I didn’t even consider it to be something I could make a career out of until I got introduced to hip-hip by some friends.
Because I was already writing poetry it became much easier for me to transition and my poems into becoming songs. From then on I started enjoying music and entertainment fully. This was my life! Though I was a bit shy I got to win a couple of music competitions at school with the choir and as a solo artist. The encouragement from my teachers and fellow students at the time really made me see that this is what my purpose is. This is me! I don’t see myself doing anything else besides entertainment.

August (winter) in SA
Month of August is supposed to be the last winter month. Brrrr. But we do have a few things to warm us up on. International Left Handers Day is an international day observed annually on August 13 to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of left handed individuals. The day was first observed in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, founder of Lefthanders International, Inc. International was created to trality and raise the advantages tages of being predominantly world.
Lefthanders Day celebrate sinisawareness of and disadvanleft-handed in a right-handed
It celebrates left-handed people’s uniqueness and differences, a subset of humanity comprising seven to ten percent of the world’s population.[2] The day also spreads awareness on issues faced by left-handers, e.g. the importance of the special needs for left-handed children, and the likelihood for lefthanders to develop schizophrenia.
Several media outlets and commercial associations have made one-off posts and compilations of accomplish left-handed people in recognition of the holiday. The Awa Dance Festival is held from 12 to 15 August as part of the Obon festival in Japan. Awa Odori is the largest dance festival in Japan, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year. Groups of choreographed dancers and musicians known as ren dance through the streets, typically accompanied by the shamisen lute, taiko drums, shinobue flute and the kane bell. Performers wear traditional obon dance costumes, and chant and sing as they parade through the streets. The earliest origins of the dance style are found in the Japanese Buddhist priestly dances from 1185, and also in kumi-odori, a lively harvest dance that was known to last for several days. In the Meiji period (1868–1912) the festival died down as the Tokushima’s indigo trade, which had financed the festival, collapsed due to imports of cheaper chemical dyes. The festival was revitalised at the start of the Shōwa period (1926) when Tokushima Prefectural authorities first coined the name “Awa Odori” and promoted it as the region’s leading tourist attraction.
