Editor’s Letter June is here - and it is winter! June is also Youth Month and this time we try to unravel the mysteries of being an entrepreneur. This is not to discourage anyone, rather to put it into perspective. It is not so easy. It requires dedication and very hard work. But you can succeed. We just had to write about the world cup. No way out of it. But of course we try to look at it differently. The trophy! and the origins of the entire thing. International just had to be Trump-Kim summit. There are a lot of things going on there. Masiziba is continuing her series on university. It is really fascinating to see all these things. Hopefully we all learn and get inspiration from her. Of course we are looking at a few jobs. What about as a chef on the Blue Train? Just about where I would hand in the pen and sign up. ... and an urban myth: Alligators in New York sewers. GOOD READ

Is it important? YES it is. Look what Rofhiwa said: My name is Rofhiwa and I love to write. I think I am rather decent writer too. I took my talent and have used it to express my thoughts on international dealings of the world which have been published in Hola MaHigh-School. It has paid off, not only is my work printed for young people in the country to read, but it also contributed to me gettng a bursary from CNBC-Africa to do my post-graduate studies. Would be a lot harder to get by if I didn’t have platform like Hola MaHigh-School.

Month of June: so many thin I LOVE America! did you know?...... Seersucker Thursday (June 7) is an annual tradition in the United States Congress in which Senators wear clothing made of seersucker on National Seersucker Day. This light, cotton-based material is traditional in the Southern United States. The tradition was started by Republican Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi in 1996 who wanted to “bring a little Southern charm to the Capitol to remind the Senate of how Senators dressed before the advent of air conditioning in the 1950s. Seersucker weave was introduced to the American south, probably through British colonial trade, sometime in the second half of the 19th century. The cotton weave, which originated in western India, became a signature look of the United States in the early 20th century because its light weight and pre-rumpled surface made it ideal for the intense humidity of summer.

ngs! All from Wiki - of course! We Tripantu is the Mapuche New Year fest that takes place on the June solstice which in the Southern Hemisphere is the Winter solstice. We Tripantu (Mapudungun tr: new sunrise) is the conclusion of the Mapuche New Year that takes place between June 21 and June 24 in the Gregorian calendar. It is the Mapuche’s equivalent to the Inti Raymi. The Pachamama (Quechua tr: Mother Earth), Nuke Mapu (uke’ Mapu) begins to bloom fertilized by Sol, from the Andean heights to the southern tip. Antü (mapuche), Inti (Aymara), or Rapa (rapanui) Sol, the sun starts to come back to earth, after the longest night of the year; it’s winter Solstice. Everything starts to bloom again

I want to an e We pride ourselves of being entrepreneurial spirited. But is it really so? Do we do enough for supporting entrepreneurs and start-ups? And especially youth wanting to try their hand at being business owners. Let us try to look at what is needed. This is not to discourage anyone. It is really to help youth to realise what is needed. If you haven’t got all of these things, well, then go get them! It is discouraging to read about the ‘big’ entrepreneurs, like Richard Branson, Alan Sugar, Google, Bill Gates, etc etc. When I just have an idea of providing an app for services in the neighbourhood. With a website and manage follow-ups ad those things. As an example. So instead of trying to get a job, why not do it yourself? But how? Business plan: can you describe what you want to do? In few sentences? If you waffle, think again. And write it again. Until it is clear. Financials: if the start will require some buying of equipment, you may need money from somewhere. The business plan will spell out why you need it, and your financials will justify it all. If you don’t know Excel well

entrepreneur! enough, get to know it or get mom/dad/school to help. The financials should show that your business is viable. The ‘spirit’: Have you got what it takes? Can you work every day for months on end and survive on very little until it starts to take off? If you can, you may have the ‘spirit’. Sell it: … and that is the critical part. You will need to sell it to a bank, sell the solution to a customer, sell … and so on. YOU are the sales force to begin with, and the developer, and … everybody. Skills: this is the hard part. Do we really equip youth to become business owners? We talk about the skills required and knowledge about the legal aspects. SARS, VAT, CIPC, DTI, Bank, insurance, (Pty) Ltd, CC, and a million other things. I foresee that we need a much stronger focus on the practical skills of entrepreneurship in grade 10-12. Maybe it needs to be extra-murals? Maybe it needs to be additional alongside the usual curriculum. If you want it badly enough, you may have to sacrifice hours in the evenings to build the skills. It could be a solution. After all, being an entrepreneur is actually very hard work the first few years. Why not start now in grade 10-12? If you want it.

Booth Schoch Future Succ Ford Resource and E This is a press release emailed to us. All content is the responsibility of the issuer. PRETORIA, South Africa, 6 June 2018 - Ford Motor Company Fund is expanding its community empowerment and upliftment programs in South Africa with the establishment of the Booth Schoch Future Success Fund at the Ford Resource and Engagement Centre (FREC) located in Pretoria, South Africa. The Fund is named in honour of former Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) president (and later chief financial officer of Ford Motor Company) Lewis Booth, and former chief financial officer (and later president of Ford Asia Pacific) Dave Schoch, who were enthusiastic champions of the local Mamelodi Township community. Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, will work with South African partner NGO, Future Families, in managing this program which will launch in early 2019. It will endow the Fund for 10 years with a grant of $100,000 (around R1.25-million), enabling $10,000 (approximately R125 000) to be awarded to deserving FREC students each year. The grant will assist the selected FREC graduates who have completed the Entrepreneurship Program to start in-home businesses, or for nominated students in the Early Childhood Development training and certification program to establish After School Care Centres. “We are proud to extend our local empowerment and upliftment

cess Fund established at Engagement Centre programs by introducing the Booth Schoch Future Success Fund to build on the legacy of the commendable initiatives introduced by Lewis Booth and Dave Schoch during their tenures in South Africa,” said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services. “The Fund will continue the great work being done at the Ford Resource and Engagement Centre by providing grants to local community members who participate in FREC education and training programs,” Vella added. “This will empower them to take the next step in their employment journey, and assist the recipients in achieving their future success as an individual and as a contributing member of the broader community.” It is a fitting tribute to Booth and Schoch who, among other accomplishments, in the early 2000s had the vision to create and launch the original Ford Care Centre on the grounds of Ford’s Silverton Assembly Plant in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic which had devastated the local community. In 2001, the United States Department of State recognized Ford Motor Company with an Award for Corporate Excellence for its South Africa HIV/AIDS workplace program. In 2015, the Ford Care Centre was expanded to become the Ford Resource and Engagement Centre (FREC), adding education, training, and entrepreneurship programs to its community offerings.

“In university, you can fail before writing your semester examinations” is a popular expression used by many senior students when describing the challenging part of university to first years. This is due to a mark, termed as ‘predicate’, that a student needs to obtain in order to participate in a semester examination for a specific module, and it differs from each university in accordance to their policies. Interestingly, there is a day or week (depending on the university) that will be dedicated to the release of the predicate of each module. This is usually towards the end of a semester. During this week or day, preliminary predicates can be released by the specific facilitators of each module.

“In univer you can fa fore writi semester inations”

It is then the responsibility of each student enrolled to check whether all the required marks and/or percentages are correct and accurate or else the predicate will not be accurate.

This has to be the responsibility of the student because in university, numerous people are registered and enrolled for a module, therefore error during the capturing of data is likely possible and tracing error can be difficult. However, a student cannot go to the module facilitators and mere-

ly claim that a predicate is incorrect. A student claiming an error in the predicate is required to have proof. This proof is the actual test and/or assignment paper attributed with a student number and an allocated mark. If it was an online test or assignment, it is important for the student to provide a screenshot or PDF file to show that it is definitely the correct mark. Therefore it becomes very important for every student to safely keep hardcopy tests and assignments after feedback and when completing online assignments and tests, to take a screenshot of the submission and completion. However, with online assignments and tests, error is less likely to happen as the programmes (software packages) that are usually used are rated efficient and accurate compared to the capturing of hardcopy marks. On the other hand, predicate day or week to some students stimulates emotions and anxiety because it could happen that the students have not accumulated the required predicate.

rsity, ail being your r exam

This will then translate to a fail and to some, an extra year of study depending on whether the module is a pre-requisite or major. Use of academic advising at the university can clarify this challenge in detail and in accordance to the rules of the faculty and university. Students who find themselves in this situation can make use of counselling services and other support systems offered by the university.

Predicate Day Additionally, predicate day or week to some students does not mean to merely qualify for the examination but it also confirms whether they have promoted a specific module or not. A student is only permitted to promote a module if a predicate mark of 70% or 75% and more is obtained depending on the requirements of the specific module and the university. Thereafter a student is exempted in writing the examination of the module and the predicate mark is used as the final mark. However, it is important for a student to note whether a module is considered a promotion module or not because not all modules are promotable

THE Summit of them all This is really a lot of info gleaned from a lot of newspapers and website, BBC being the most prominent of them all. However, the analysis is 100% mine alone. We have previously looked at North Korea. Let us quickly recap a few things. The living standard is not high compared to anything in this world. It was probably OK when China was just as poor, but that has changed. With the advent of the internet and easy access to cell phones, North Koreans are starting to see that the world is not on the brink of exterminating them all and only checked by Mr. Kim (himself – all alone that is). With North Korea spending a pile of money (which they really don’t have) on weapons of all kinds, especially the nuclear stuff, there is a big hole in the economy. China used to be very generous and extending credits and so on. After all, 98% of all North Korean trade is with China. But then China started to pull the plug on it.

This is “oneshot” peace

I think they got a bit nervous about North Kore as a nuclear power. And on top of, China is far more interested in trade and good relations with the US. So dropping Mr. Kim is rather easy. But Kim is a good player, we have to acknowledge that. He has managed to turn the nuclear option (which was rapidly becoming a liability) into an asset. So if he should sacrifice his nuclear ambition for a good relationship with the US? Then what? It saves money and it did the trick: put him at the table with the other powers. Now suddenly he is popular with Mr Putin. And Trump does not like that. But hey, he just showed Mr. Trump that the US is not the only game in town. Clever move! But it goes further. When Trump cancelled the meeting, Europe was on its feet and persuading Trump to go ahead with it. So now suddenly Europe was interested in North Korea. That was new. They had not been greatly enthusiastic about anything North before, positive or negative.

s it: -time at e

Mr. Kim could indeed take it easy. No need to push anything around. Europe could do that for him. And that also worked fairly well. What do we expect? Sanctions to go away somehow and the nuclear options being chucked in the bin. Normal trade coming online very fast, also with South Korea.

It can change the world! and to What does Mr. Kim really want?

This is a most horrible thing to answer. Mr. Kim is a semi-god and reve want fame and fortune on the world stage? Is it ego or what do we see

Here is my view – and it might be totally wrong. I believe that Mr. Kim be no mistake, the army could easily dispose of him. So he must keep weapons and keeping them in power. On the other hand, there is a real chance (as popular uprising. It is not possible to suppress is another life (China and South Korea are Could it be that he really wants to unleash nation? To copy the Chinese example? Chuck country, even if it has to be called something My view that is exactly what he is aiming at. probably not more than that, for now at least. The world is still dominated by the US and he needs more trading partners and that can only

Will there be others? Of course. I predict that India will be in on it, and flow and there is an untapped market for loans and credits.

Where will it end? In some very few years we will see that North Korea China will be a partner but far less influential.

The Kim dynasty will still be in place and soon he will have to anoint a close family this time.

The military will be downgraded. There will be no need to spend so mu

o something better - for once

ered and feared and so on. What more can he possible want? Does he e?

m is aiming at reforming North Korea and still stay in power. Let there the generals happy (and that is mostly family as well) by buying them small as it might be) that there could be a information forever. People can see that there great examples). North Korea’s potential as an industrialised communism and go for an open capitalistic else (as it is in China). The glorified unification is a great slogan, but needs the trade. China is big on his radar. He be US and other Asian countries.

d that Singapore will provide financing of new things. Money must

a will compete directly with South Korea and maybe even be bigger.

a successor in the great game. My bet is that it will be outside the

uch money for nothing! It did the trick.

From Russia with love: The World Cup Now we thought football or soccer was recognized throughout history? Well, not so. And the World Cup has had a rough time as well. Wiki says: The world’s first international football match was a challenge match played in Glasgow in 1872 between Scotland and England, which ended in a 0–0 draw. The first international tournament, the inaugural edition of the British Home Championship, took place in 1884. As football grew in popularity in other parts of the world at the turn of the 20th century, it was held as a demonstration sport with no medals awarded at the 1900 and 1904 Summer Olympics and at the 1906 Intercalated Games. After FIFA was founded in 1904, it tried to arrange an international football tournament between nations outside the Olympic framework in Switzerland in 1906. It was a failure.

At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, football became an official competition With the Olympic event continuing to be contested only between amateur teams, Sir Thomas Lipton organised the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin in 1909. The Lipton tournament was a championship between individual clubs from different nations, each one of which represented an entire nation. The competition is sometimes described as The First World Cup, and featured the most prestigious professional club sides from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Fast forward to 1930. National teams. No more amateur sport and Olympics! It is FIFA full throttle. The first two World Cup matches took place simultaneously on 13 July 1930, and were won by France and the USA, who defeated Mexico 4–1 and Belgium 3–0 respectively. The first goal in World Cup history was scored by Lucien Laurent of France. In the final, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people in Montevideo, and in doing so became the first nation to win the World Cup. It got to go fast now: The World Cup is the most prestigious association football tournament in the world as well as the most widely viewed and followed sporting event in the world, exceeding even the Olympic Games; the cumulative audience of all matches of the 2006 World Cup was estimated to be 26.29 billion with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the final match, a ninth of the entire population of the planet

Sunbake: Helping w This is a press release emailed to us. All content for the issuers account The winners of The Sunbake Super Schools Challenge, now in its 5th year, have been announced, and will each be receiving a library container filled with books. On Monday 28 May 2018, Rethabile Primary School in Limpopo was the first of three schools each receiving a container library to the value of R50 000, plus an R10 000 book voucher. From 29 January to 28 March 2018, learners in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West were challenged to collect Sunbake bread bags, complete the entry form on the bag and deposit it in a Sunbake collection bag at their school, and boy did they participate! Each week these bags were collected and spot prizes including PEP vouchers, cool backpacks and umbrellas were handed out. In total 1,9 million bags were collected with Rethabile Primary School in Phalaborwa, Khombindlela Primary School in Tsakane and Lesabe Primary School in Benoni being the three top performers.

where it is needed! The Rethabile Primary School handover event was hosted by local television star, Sandile ‘GQ’ Ntshingila from MTV Base, and was a fun-filled morning with dance-offs and surprise giveaways for the children in attendance. “We are so thrilled to be one of the schools receiving a container library and cannot wait for the children to start making use of the books and enriching their learning experience,” notes Rethabile Primary School Headmaster, Peter Maake. The aim of the Sunbake Super Schools Challenge is to uplift South African communities through cooperation and outreach. “We are committed to uplifting the South African communities we operate in,” says Siyabonga Mhlongo, Brand Manager for Sunbake. “We know that you can’t teach a hungry child and at Sunbake, we aim to enrich learners with the sustenance they need to be productive in the classroom.” Sunbake looks forward to more initiatives to support South African communities and are excited to hand over not only the top three container prizes but also an R5 000 book voucher for each of the top five schools in each participating region.

Science is a lot of things It is easy to always think science in connection with technology. Like science is only related to developing new machines, robots, flying objects and those things. Science is indeed a lot of things. This time we would like to draw the attention to National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences NIHSS. NIHSS charter is (from their website www. nihss.ac.za): The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) was established on 5 December 2013 as an independent statutory body. [‌.] The scope or application of the NIHSS will be to advance and co-ordinate scholarship, research and ethical practice in the fields of Humanities and the Social Sciences (HSS) within and through the existing public universities and those to be established or declared in future as public Universities. In essence: supporting the humanities and social sciences in SA. But what is social sciences? Wiki says: “Social science is a major category of academic disciplines, concerned with society and the relationships among individuals within a society. Social science as a whole has many

branches, each of which is considered a social science. The social sciences include, but are not limited to: anthropology, archaeology, economics, history, human geography, jurisprudence, linguistics, political science, psychology, public health, and sociology” In essence: we are talking people. A history professor is within the ambit of Social Sciences, etc. NIHSS programmes are: The NIHSS has partnered with the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) to develop the African Pathways Doctoral Scholarship Programme. A Doctoral Scholarship Call is opened to suitably qualified non-South African students to study full time towards a doctoral degree in the humanities and social sciences at any public university in South Africa. The NIHSS collaborates annually with the South African Humanities Deans Association (SAHUDA) to extend 150 scholarships per annum to full-time PhD students based at South African universities. The NIHSS Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2020 sets a target of 900 South African students partaking in Doctoral Schools by 2020. NIHSS is actively into the BRICS Think Tank. This might be one of the major innovations and successes of BRICS. This – please – is a big area. Please look at www.nihss.ac.za. Is NIHSS then successful? Judge yourself: “The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences hosted another exciting and energised Annual National Doctoral Conference (ANDC) on 01-02 November 2017. At least 200 NIHSS PhD-supported fellows were on site sharing knowledge and networking. […] The twoday conference saw a red carpet rolled out during a gala dinner on 01 November evening where a first cohort of NIHSS-supported graduates were honoured and celebrated. PS: we were there! And it was huge! PPS: Science is a lot of things!

The Trophies! We stay with the World Cup. Now, the trophy. That one has a different story. Or actually those two. Yes, there were/are two trophies at play here. All from Wiki, btw The first one was commissioned by the first FIFA president, Jules Rimet. It was an imposing thing. It was made of gold plated sterling silver and lapis lazuli and depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. During World War II, the trophy was held by 1938 champion Italy. Ottorino Barassi, the Italian vice-president of FIFA, secretly transported the trophy from a bank in Rome and hid it in a shoe-box under his bed to prevent Adolf Hitler and the Nazis from taking it. On 20 March 1966, four months before the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England, the trophy was stolen during a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall. The trophy was found just seven days later wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a suburban garden hedge on Beulah Hill, Upper Norwood, South London, by a dog named Pickles. How English can this be? The Brazilian team won the tournament for the third time in 1970, allowing them to keep the real trophy in perpetuity, as had been stipulated by Jules Rimet in 1930. It was put on display at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro in a cabinet with a front of bullet-proof glass.

On 19 December 1983, the wooden rear of the cabinet was pried open with a crowbar and the cup was stolen again. Four men were tried and convicted in absentia for the crime. The trophy has never been recovered, and it is widely believed to have been melted down and sold. Only one piece of the Jules Rimet Trophy has been found, the original base which FIFA had kept in a basement of the federation’s Zürich headquarters prior to 2015. The Confederation commissioned a replica of their own, made by Eastman Kodak, using 1.8 kilograms (4.0 lb) of gold. This replica was presented to Brazilian military president João Figueiredo in 1984.

A replacement trophy was commissioned by FIFA for the 1974 World Cup. The trophy is made of 5 kilograms of 18 carat gold, worth approximately US$150,000 in 2017. It has been asserted that the trophy is hollow; if, as is claimed, it were solid, the trophy would weigh 70–80 kilograms and would be too heavy to lift. Now we know!

The Alligator Myth: It is not true, sorry Urban Myth, but I still think it could just be…. It is from https:// www.livescience.com/33322-alligators-crocodiles-new-york-citysewers.html That claim has been around for decades. The myth starts with a young boy who gets a baby alligator for his birthday and flushes it down the toilet, not knowing what else to do about it. Years later, as the story goes, that same boy reaches into a sewer grate for a lost baseball, and his arm is ripped off by his former pet, now monstrous and ravenous for blood. Trumping all myths, however, is the fact that alligators wouldn’t survive long in sewers. In a 1982 interview with The New York Times, sewer bureau spokesman John T. Flaherty said, “I could cite you many cogent, logical reasons why the sewer system is not a fit habitat for an alligator. But suffice it to say that, in the 28 years I have been in the sewer game, neither I nor any of the thousands of men who have worked to build, maintain or repair the sewer system has ever seen one, and a 10-foot, 800-pound alligator would be hard to miss.” … But I am not totally convinced!
