Editors Letter May - the last month of Autumn. It is alreeady cold and it feels like winter. Just to warm us all up, we have focused on languages. Again, some would say. But languages are so important and are so much a part of us. We have a great article about Dr. Kunju who wrote his PhD in isiXhosa. We tend to believe we are OK in a mother-tongue until we have to write ‘serious’ stuff. OK, let this speak out! We are getting into the preparations for next year and will look at the big question ‘What next .. after high-school’. There is a list of universities and TVETs. TVETs are important and we do plan to write more about this sector. International? China again. There are many things happening here, and I love China. Wish I could go there one day. What else? just to say: GOOD READ

We need writers! Our writers are growing up and getting older That is og course good. BUT.... it means they are leaving us Therefore: would you like towrite for us? What is required? That is easy You have to be in grade 10-12 Impeccable in your preferred language-and that might not be English. We try to be more than just English Passionate about your topic of choice no dull articles here

Do you get anything out of it? Well, not money, sorrry. BUT if we publish your articles you will have: Your bio in a commercial magazine A photo of yourself You can put it all on your CV you can use us as a reference ... and it goes in your portfolio

Is it important? YES it is. Look what Rofhiwa said: My name is Rofhiwa and I love to write. I think I am rather decent writer too. I took my talent and have used it to express my thoughts on international dealings of the world which have been published in Hola MaHigh-School. It has paid off, not only is my work printed for young people in the country to read, but it also contributed to me gettng a bursary from CNBC-Africa to do my post-graduate studies. Would be a lot harder to get by if I didn’t have platform like Hola MaHigh-School.

Sunday of May of every year . The first celebration was on January 10, 1998, in Mumbai, India, and was arranged by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement. Dr. Kataria was inspired to start the Laughter Yoga movement in part by the facial feedback hypothesis, which postulates that a person’s facial expressions can have an effect on their emotions.

It is most often celebrated by gatherings of people in public places with the sole purpose of laughing. Its popularity has grown exponentially with that of the Laughter Yoga movement now counting thousands of Laughter Clubs in more than 105 countries

old but not boring Star Wars Day, May 4, celebrates Star Wars

created by George Lucas. It is observed by fans of the movies. Observance of the holiday spread quickly through media and grassroots celebrations.

The date was chosen for the pun on the catchphrase “May the Force be with you” as “May the Fourth be with you”. Even though the holiday was not actually created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday. In 2008, the first Facebook groups appeared, celebrating Luke Skywalker Day, with the same catchphrase. While the initial group never received widespread acclaim, the phenomenon spread to college campuses a few years later, and Star Wars Day was born. Since 2013, The Walt Disney Company has officially observed the holiday with several Star Wars events and festivities at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. On Star Wars Day 2015, astronauts in the International Space Sta tion watched Star Wars

PhD written in isiXhos This is an extract of an article published on the IOL website 23 April 2017. The author is Theto Mahlakoana. We have marked the quotations from the article in “”. All credits to Theto Mahlakoana and IOL. “A chance encounter between a South African music teacher and Xhosa-speaking students in Zimbabwe has led to the production of Rhodes University’s first PhD thesis in isiXhosa. Although the study unveiled little-known linkages between AmaXhosa in the Eastern Cape and a community of over 200,000 others living in Mbembesi, about 45km outside Bulawayo, it was mostly celebrated for putting the language on par with English among others used in academic inquiry”.

“I wan show th hosa ca what the languag others c

This is really the crux of the matter! And our focus today. Putting our mother-tongue (whatever it is) on par with English sounds so easy. But there is a distinct difference between the spoken (and casual) usage of mother-tongue around family and then putting it into proper grammar and proper choice of words. Just listen to ourselves sometimes and see how ‘polluted’ any language in South Africa is. Dr. Kunju has mastered this little trick Quoted from the article: “When Rhodes University drafted its new language policy allowing students to use their mother tongue for learning, 31-year-old Kunju said he knew this would give him an opportunity to conduct work in his vernacular language.

sa hailed as milestone This was an easy sell, he explained, because like many other students he had struggled with English during his undergraduate studies. “I’d write (in English) and think this is it.

“But it would come back marked in red and they (lecturers) would ask what are you trying to say, and I eventually put it in a way nted to that made sense to them”.

hat isiXan do e English ge and can do”

“I wanted to show that isiXhosa can do what the English language and others can do. “As a language activist, I always try to elevate isiXhosa, but many people think to elevate isiXhosa is to suppress everything else and we might be getting it wrong that way.

“We should be saying, look, this is what English can do and also what isiXhosa can do.” Kunju was among seven other PhD graduates who conducted their thesis in African languages at the university. “”” end of quote. It also raises one good question. We should not as much preserve a language as develop it. Preserve is standing still. Developing is going forward and that is perhaps where we sometimes get it wrong.

Really Silly ... Co Ok, this one is really silly. Nations should be like South Africa, USA, China and those things. So, how can they be silly? Read on and be amazed! All from Wikipedia

The Principality of Sealand

The Principality of Sealand is an unrecognised micronation that claims Roughs Tower, an offshore platform located in the North Sea approximately 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) off the coast of Suffolk, England, as its territory. Roughs Tower is a disused Maunsell Sea Fort, originally called HM Fort Roughs, built as an anti-aircraft defensive gun platform by the British during World War II.

Since 1967, the decommissioned HM Fort Roughs has been occupied by family and associates of Paddy Roy Bates, who claim that it is an independent sovereign state. He attempted to establish Sealand as a nation-state in 1975 with the writing of a national constitution and establishment of other national symbols.

The Kingdom of Lovely

How To Start Your Own Country was a six-part BBC Television documentary comedy series aired between August and September 2005. The show was presented by British writer/comedian Danny Wallace and followed his quest to start his own country in his flat in Bow, London. The micronation he created was eventually named “Lovely”.

The Kingdom of Lovely is a partly Internet-based micronation that claims as its territory an East London flat owned—and once lived in—by its creator and ruler, the comic writer Danny Wallace. Lovely has 58,165 citizens registered on its website (citizensrequired.com, no longer active). The official territory of Lovely was Wallace’s flat in Bow, East London, but citizens of Lovely are invited to declare a room, or some other building or land belonging to them, to be an embassy for the country by taking a photograph displaying Lovely’s flag there.

ountries Republic of Molossia

Molossia, also known as the self-proclaimed Republic of Molossia, is a micronation, founded by Kevin Baugh (b. 30 July 1962) and headquartered at his home in Dayton, Nevada. The Republic of Molossia has claimed itself a nation but it is not officially recognized as a country by the United Nations or any country. It consists of Baugh’s house (known as the Government House), about 0.01 acres (40 m2) in size, as well as 1.3 acres (5,000 m2) of surrounding property, enclaved by Nevada. Originally established as a childhood project in 1977, Molossia subsequently evolved into a territorial entity in the late 1990s. It is the Baugh family’s primary place of residence, and the site of Molossia’s designated capital, Baughston. Baughston was renamed from Espera on 30 July 2013 to commemorate President Baugh’s 51st birthday. The United States of America’s street address for Kevin Baugh’s house is 226 Mary Lane Road, Dayton, NV 89403. Vesperia is the name of Molossia’s claim of 49,881 square miles (130,000 km2) on the planet of Venus. Additionally, Molossia claims a spot named Neptune Deep in the North Pacific Ocean, about 750 kilometres (470 mi) southwest of Mexico

Should we have a Republic of Hola? That would be a new!

Energy Poverty Imagine a life without TV, not cooking on a stove, not boiling that cup of coffee on a cold winter day; it must be a frightening! Unfortunately, there are people who do not have access to energy that fulfils those desires. Energy poverty is defined as the absence of modern energy services to an enormous number of people in developing countries and several people in developed countries. In fact, 17% of the world population (1.2 billion people) lack access to electricity. This translates to the fact that some people have no access to fridges, or adequate energy services to meet many of their basic needs. Hence, their standard of living is greatly reduced. 90 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa go to primary schools that lack electricity. In Burundi and Guinea only 2% of schools are electrified, while in DR Congo there are only 8% school electrification for a population of 75.5 million. So how do they survive without modern energy services? Well, they resort to biomass energy, which is the usage of firewood and charcoal. This traditional energy source is physically tormenting to a human being and to the environment. Sustainable Energy for All, an initiative launched in 2011 by UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon and co-led by World Bank President

reality for many Jim Kim, plans to avert energy poverty. In September 2015, the world’s leaders came together to agree on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) based on this. One of those goals, SDG 7, calls for Sustainable Energy for All initiative to secure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030. Moreover, energy poverty is tackled by personalities within the entertainment industry. Renowned Eritrean model, Grace Mahary, kick-started her own non-profit organization, Project Tseigh, to help her country overcome energy poverty. She recalls, in an interview with OkayAfrica, how she left Eritrea at age 14 to venture into modelling. However, when she returned to Eritrea as an adult, she did not even know whether there were toilets or electricity. This was in addition to the fact that during her modelling career, she had travelled to regions where energy poverty was a serious issue, and felt that was a pivotal moment for her to start this project to fight energy poverty. If you are a human being who has access to toilets, the ability to watch TV or the opportunity to go to an electrified school while a portion of the world population does not, you should be thankful, because energy poverty is reality.

Scuderia South Africa an Program for young, dyna This is editorial we have received from Scuderia SA. All opinions etc are for their account and necessarily representing Romele. Johannesburg, 19 May 2017Scuderia South Africa, the official Ferrari dealer proudly announces their 2017 Internship Program. The exhilarating new project was launched officially on Scuderia South Africa’s social media pages last week. “This program promises to be the start of the greater things to come” says Jan Ungerer, COO of Scuderia South Africa. Gauteng based applicants aged between 18-25 years were given the opportunity to apply for the anticipated six month internship through South Africa’s official social media pages. To apply, users were requested to post a recent photo of themsleves next to their favourite Ferrari explaining why they felt they were the ideal perfect candidate in 200 words or less. Aspirants from across the province applied online using the hashtag #ThePursuitOfExcellence in the hope of qualifying to the next level. Ten of the top applicants were then selected to commence to the interview process. The official Ferrari dealer in South Africa will afford a

The project is set to kick start in Johannesburg, but will eventually expand to the branches in Cape Town and Durban. “The project was launched to afford young, ambitious and passionate individuals the opportunity to learn and engage with the brand at an operational level. The program offers a valuable opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of the holistic business model and contribute to assisting the relevant departments on various different tasks adds Ungerer. Interns also provide raw talent that can be shaped into targeted and focused employees who can make a long term contribution to the development of the company. These interns can jump-start their careers through such programs and have the opportunity to gain greater responsibility, whilst also building a firm base of contacts and experience and gain specialized training. The 2017 Internship program is scheduled to commence at Scuderia Johannesburg on the 3 July 2017 to ultimately fulfill the program objective- the pursuit of excellence.

Varsity life is not ju there but making th I remember my teacher back in high school while taking attendance and looking at our sad, emotionless faces in class, and he would simply say “you know, in varsity, you don’t have to attend class” while ticking off our names with a smile. Although there are few modules taking attendance, going to class in varsity is actually a choice. What is even worse is that life gets difficult and varsity choices dictate whether you make it there or not. A test arrives, with a multiple choice and written section. You sit next to this student, whose pen moves so fast, you cannot understand how they do it; The invigilator then suddenly shouts”10 minutes left”. After the test, you hear students (who attend class) mention how the lecturer did a similar problem. Then everyone realises how important this is. Is it a trend to skip classes? Very bad idea. To succeed, you certainly need to put in all the work, including attending all classes and tutorials. In fact, research shows that an A student only skips one class on average per semester (usually from February to June) compared to other students. In addition, students who study with

ust about making it hings happen there! the added information from lectures and tutorials are more likely to pass. However, there are students who face problems and really cannot attend class. Some have too little transport money to attend classes since they live far away. Despite the difficulties, all students still have the responsibility to ask for lecture notes from fellow students, and make use of educational facilities such as lecturer consultation hours for a module Q&A with the lecturer in their office, and pushing to study hard enough not to experience any surprises during tests. Some do not go to class even during predicate day, the day where marks are published. The students will not know whether they qualify for an exam or not, and that is silly. It is one thing to attend classes but not put in the good effort to ensure a pass is something else. University is all about what you put in, and it is not easy.

The big WHAT NEXT .. after high School This is the big What Next list. It is as comprehensive as we can make it.

The university list is OK. all the websites are there, and it is all working. The TVET’s are there, but not all websites are working. Please check it yourself without blaming me.

The telephone numbers are listed as per government websites, but alas, not all working. All info is coming from government websites and from our own ‘tests’.

A word of advise: This is all the government listed entities. BUT there are a lot of private schools as well, too numerous to list. These are the likes of Damelin, Boston, etc etc. Just make sure that the one you are interested in is çertified’. In essence: if in doubt, phone Department of Higher Education. Not difficult really. GOOD LUCK!

China and the What now? Did we all see the little piece of news regarding China’s roll-out of their new passenger liner, the C919? Was it even significant? Good question. Let us try to look at the facts behind this. The best part of this is gleaned from Wikipedia. There is no doubt that the aero industry is big. The manufacture of passenger liners and their engines will count in many billions of dollars per year. Contracts are significant. Insofar as air travel can only get bigger, it is a growing market (despite set-backs from time to time). There are two major manufacturers: Boeing (USA) and Airbus (Europe). There are others as well, but let us just stay with these as these dominate the aero industry. What are the biggest airlines? Here are some graphs: Airline Revenue ($bn) American Airlines 40.99 Delta 40.5 United 37.5 Lufthansa 35.5 Airfrance-KLM 28.9 IAG 25.3 South West Airlines 20.2 China Southern 17.7 China Eastern 14.9 Al Nippon 14.7 Here is another view: Airline Fleet American Airlines 939 Delta 856 United 738 Southwest Airlines 727 Fedex 659 China Southern 523 China Eastern 453 Air China 393 Ryanair 384 Lufthansa 280

aero industry OK, the top five are US-based. But 6, 7 and 8 are from China? And where do we find British Airways? Air France? Thai? Emirates? Etihad? Singapore airlines? See what I mean? OK, then. But what type of aircraft do they operate? Airbus and Boeing - all of them! And here comes a Chinese aircraft, smack into the most lucrative end of the market: the medium haul, max 200 passenger market. This is where we see the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. There are now orders for 570 aircraft by November 2016. That is a lot! The projection is 2,000 units over 20 years. This is about 20% of that market segment. But who is buying the thing? Mostly Chinese airlines, but the market is mostly in Asia. Now it becomes very interesting! Where would we expect the market growth? US cannot grow much more. Europe the same. Air travel is an integrated part of living in US or Europe. But that is not the case in Asia! Where do we see the most people in the world? Asia! Where wold we expect the growth in living standard? Asia! (look at China as an example). Where would logic tell us that the growth in air travel will happen? Asia! And now there is a cheaper option for those growing airlines! C919.

Aero industry: othe C919 - Does it really mean a paradigm shift? Yes it does! It will be a major competitor to sit in a market that is growing and it will be competing with the traditional market’s new acquisitions. Up to 20% of the market. It is also a break-up of the perception of European or US-manufactures as ‘the best’. Let us look a little bit further now: Russia: United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is a merger of the traditional Russian aircraft manufacturer (Ilyushin, Irkut, Sukhoi, Tupolev, and Yakovlev). They are also exactly into the profitable end of the market. New types are: Irkut MC-21, Sukhoi Superjet 100, Sukhoi Superjet 130, Sukhoi Su-80, Tupolev Tu-204. These are all new things and competing with the best. Customers: Mainly Russian airlines, but of course they are selling all over the glove. Price and quality beats reputation! India: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Now this is an interesting one. They do a lot of license production (Russian fighter jets) but the aim is to have a fully functional civilian aero industry. That means? More competition. And a lot of it. Let us look at populations: China – 1,373 bn, India 1,326 bn. Asia in total: 4,164 bn. World: 7,500 bn. Asia is then nearly 60%

er entrants as well of the world population. Europe 742 million, USA 324 million. USA+Europe only some 15% of the world population. Wealth? Obviously US and Europe. Wealth in the coming years? Asia! Where would you go to invest in Aero industry? Asia. Where would you buy from? Asia. And that means China and India. Do we see any similarities in other markets? Oh yes. Let us look at the car market. The market after World War II was dominated by Europe and USA. Ford, Citroen, Leyland, Sab, Volvo, etc etc. But then something happened. Japan came into the market. Cheap and not very good to begin with. ‘Made in Japan’ was not something to strive for. And now? Nissan, Toyota, Datsun, Izuzu, … you name them. High-quality and dominant in the market. And now? China: Chery, Geely and Great Wall are surely on the march. And Chinese car manufacturing has been the largest in the world since 2008! Like that! India: Mahindra and Tata are just two names. Again the same picture. Massive market, massive industry. So we will see a new world emerging, and the herald is the C919.

Goodyear Unveils the Ea cept Tyre Powered by A tyre is not just a tyre, at least not from now on - This is from a rticle we were sent by Goodyear. Geneva, March 7th - Goodyear has revealed its long-term vision for future smart, connected tyres. In an evolving mobility ecosystem defined by the transition to driverless vehicles and shared mobility in urban centers, Goodyear aims to revolutionize the interaction between tyres, vehicles and their surroundings. Goodyear unveiled the Eagle 360 Urban, its latest concept tyre, at the Geneva International Motor Show. This 3-D printed sphere is the first concept tyre to be powered by Artificial Intelligence and able to sense, decide, transform and interact. “A revolution will take place at the intersection of autonomy, mobility and connectivity. As this unfolds, tyre technology will be even more important than it is today. To safely navigate their surroundings, the autonomous vehicles of the future will need to learn to cope with the millions of possible unknowns we face in every day driving scenarios. To do so they will need access to data and the ability to learn and adapt,” said Jean-Claude Kihn, president of Goodyear Europe, Middle East and Africa. This year, with the Eagle 360 Urban, Goodyear is pushing the boundaries again, aiming to illustrate a vision of how the future could look. Powered by Artificial Intelligence, Goodyear is giving the concept tyre a ‘brain’. Combined with a bionic skin and morphing tread, the Eagle 360 Urban has the ability to put knowledge into practice. The tyre will be-

agle 360 Urban, a ConArtificial Intelligence come part of the vehicle’s ‘nervous system’ and the connected world of the Internet of Things. That way, it is ready to rapidly adapt to changing circumstances, as well as the evolving needs of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) for fleets and their users. Goodyear’s Eagle 360 Urban features bionic skin with a sensor network that allows the concept tyre to check on its own status and gather information on its environment, including the road surface. Via connectivity with other vehicles as well as infrastructure, traffic and mobility management systems, the Eagle 360 Urban also captures information on its surroundings in real-time. By combining these sources of information and processing them instantaneously using neural networks trained with deep learning algorithms, the Eagle 360 Urban decides the most appropriate course of action. And, powered by Artificial Intelligence, the Eagle 360 Urban learns from previous actions how to optimize future responses. Made of super-elastic polymer, the tyre’s bionic skin has a flexibility similar to that of human skin, allowing it to expand and contract. This outer layer covers a foam-like material that is strong enough to remain flexible despite the weight of a vehicle. Thanks to this flexibility, actuator elements beneath the tyre’s surface, which are components that change shape with an electrical input, working like human muscles, can re-shape the individual sections of the tyre’s tread design, adding ‘dimples’ for wet conditions or smoothing the tread for dry conditions. A new tread with a safer contact patch is thus deployed.

Goodyear 360 - more so Using this morphing tread, the Eagle 360 Urban transforms and adapts to changing road and weather conditions. The concept tyre can then interact to share the information it has captured, the related action and its success with other vehicles and all of the elements making up the Internet of Things. When the tyre’s bionic skin is damaged, the sensors in the tread can locate the puncture. The tyre then rotates to create a different contact patch. This reduces pressure on the puncture and allows the self-healing process to start. The self-healing works thanks to materials which are specifically designed to be able to flow towards the puncture. They react physically and chemically with each other to form new molecular bonds, closing the puncture. KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS The Artificial Intelligence unit serves as the ‘brain’ of the tyre and enables the tyre to: • Continuously sense the road condition and the surrounding environment in real-time and check on its own status in real-time. • Process the information it captures using neural networks trained with deep

ophisticated than a tyre learning algorithms to decide what to do and learn for the future. • Transform using its own morphing tread and tyre/vehicle interface. • Interactwith other vehicles and all of the elements making up the Internet of Things to share the information it has captured and lessons learned. The bionic skin’s high-sensory capacity tread, with its sensor network, captures information on road and weather conditions and transmits this input to: • The tyre to optimize the morphing of the tread. • the vehicle’s ‘nervous system’ to improve the car’s braking, handling and efficiency. • all of the elements making up the Internet of Things to inform other tyres and vehicles expected to take the same road. The intelligent morphing tread prepares the vehicle for the unexpected by proactively providing safety under all conditions. Depending on the road and weather conditions, the most appropriate tread pattern appears autonomously with the help of the bionic skin of the tyre. The bionic skin allows self-healing repair. And, in combination with the Artificial Intelligence unit, it measures current and predicts future tyre wear to allow automated tyre management, enabling predictive and proactive maintenance. The spherical shape moves in all directions and contributes to comfort, safety and maneuverability to match the demands of autonomous mobility and mobility as a service.

Robotics in 2017 We have written about robotics before. Let us this time just turn to something less ‘glamorous’ – industrial robots. We go to the factory floor. What Wiki says: “An industrial robot is a robot system used for manufacturing. Industrial robots are automated, programmable and capable of movement on two or more axes. Typical applications of robots include welding, painting, assembly, pick and place for printed circuit boards, packaging and labeling, palletizing, product inspection, and testing; all accomplished with high endurance, speed, and precision”. And also: “Some robots are programmed to faithfully carry out specific actions over and over again (repetitive actions) without variation and with a high degree of accuracy. These actions are determined by programmed routines that specify the direction, acceleration, velocity, deceleration, and distance of a series of coordinated motions”. There are other types, but this is the ‘bread and butter’ of robots. Let us look at some key words: ‘repetitive action, accuracy’. We can also add dangerous (painting is a bit hazardous) and so on. So, we can do more and more different processes, which we otherwise would not be able to do. Does it remove a job? Maybe. But it might create a job to program all of this, to test it and do

7 - where are we? the high-level stuff. It also points to one additional element: education. Whereas the Luddites saw the machine as degrading the jobs, maybe the opposite is now true. To work with robots require far more skills. The workforce must be far better educated – and that typically goes with higher salaries. Do we see any examples? I think we can look at the European car manufacturing plants. Of course highly automated. Wiki: “The automotive industry in Germany is one of the largest employers in the country, with a labour force of over 747,000 (2009) working in the industry”. I found this from ‘https://www.ixpos.de/IXPOS’: “DUAL EDUCATION SYSTEM Germany provides direct access to a highly qualified and flexible labor pool. The country’s dual education system – unique in combining the benefits of classroom-based and onthe-job training over a period of two to three years – is specifically geared to meet industry needs. In close cooperation with industry and the government, the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs) and the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) ensure that exacting standards are adhered to, guaranteeing the quality of training provided across Germany” So maybe we see that the boring stuff goes and a job will have more meaning but also require more skills.

Urban Myth: Never sail off on a Friday PS: Titanic did!

Here is an excellent litle myth: HMS Friday! All from Wiki. HMS Friday is an urban myth concerning a disastrous attempt by the Royal Navy to dispel the superstition against sailing on a Friday. While widely circulated, the story is in fact untrue; moreover, there was never even a ship named HMS Friday. The details of the story vary, but it usually follows this form: Sometime in the 19th century, the Royal Navy attempted to finally dispel the old superstition among sailors that beginning a voyage on a Friday was certain to bring bad luck. To demonstrate the falseness of this belief, they decided to commission a ship named HMS Friday. Her keel was laid on a Friday, she was launched on a Friday, and she set sail on her maiden voyage on Friday the 13th, under the command of a Captain James Friday. She was never seen or heard from again. This story, in numerous variations, is frequently recounted, often as fact. It also appeared as a small “filler” item in the magazine “Reader’s Digest”, its format giving the impression of having been historically researched. In fact, there has never been any Royal Navy ship of that name
