Editor’s Letter November - the last issue is here. Oh well, we might just do one more. But let us see. November is a funny month. We have midterm elections in the USA. A bit overlooked perhaps, but they are rather significant. So we have a go at that. Masiziba is having her last tips for this year. Wonder what she will be up to in 2019... Hope she will still write for us. Exam tips.... It is a bit too much also for us to bombard all and sundry. But alas, we did something. But then we got into Christmas mood. And that is Disney. Amazing! and remember to click on the videos. Of course a little urban myth. This one is a great hoax. Made me giggle a bit. So....what more can I say? GOOD READ

We need writers! Our writers are growing up and getting older That is og course good. BUT.... it means they are leaving us Therefore: would you like towrite for us? What is required? That is easy You have to be in grade 10-12 Impeccable in your preferred language-and that might not be English. We try to be more than just English Passionate about your topic of choice no dull articles here
Do you get anything out of it? Well, not money, sorrry. BUT if we publish your articles you will have: Your bio in a commercial magazine A photo of yourself You can put it all on your CV you can use us as a reference ... and it goes in your portfolio
Is it important? YES it is. Look what Rofhiwa said: My name is Rofhiwa and I love to write. I think I am rather decent writer too. I took my talent and have used it to express my thoughts on international dealings of the world which have been published in Hola MaHigh-School. It has paid off, not only is my work printed for young people in the country to read, but it also contributed to me gettng a bursary from CNBC-Africa to do my post-graduate studies. Would be a lot harder to get by if I didn’t have platform like Hola MaHigh-School.

Exam tips – something from us We should probably also provide some exam tips. It feels a bit flat, though. I think every matric student has been overloaded with exam tips. It feels as though there is more reading about exams than actually preparing for exams. Be that as it may, we have collected a few hints. These are tested through personal experiences. It is coming from https:// www.goconqr.com/en/examtime/blog/ study-hacks/ It is only a few we have selected. And a few are based on experience. Speed reading: if you have not already taken a few online courses on speed reading, it is already too late – sorry. However, it is working. And it is a clear necessity if you should aspire to go to any university. Or anywhere in life, really. It is working. I would never have been able to consume the amount of written material at university without it. Reward yourself with a treat: put a treat for yourself if you achieve a set goal. It can be to have read an article in a specified amount of time and the treat can be as simple as a cookie. It is the pacing of one self which is important here. The better one is if the material has simple questions to test the knowledge gained. A mini-exam in your head is just as good as anything else. It creates the spirit of success. Create mental associations: read the Mind Palace article. That is it. And it works. If it worked for Cicero it will work for you. The font: this one is new to me. Times New Roman is the easiest font to read (we use Arial as our standard). Amazing! So if you have to stick something on paper, use Times New Roman.
Get an audience: this works! Explain what you have learned to another person. It can even be to explain it to the cat. Just for you to articulate it will make you see the flaws in your knowledge. In essence: you will know it before anybody else. It is not the person listening to you who is important. It is YOU explaining it. If you can’t explain it, you haven’t got it. Simple. This is one which I use personally in many instances. If anybody is trying to get me convinced about a new business venture, I will let them explain the idea behind the venture. Maybe I cannot spot flaws, but people explaining it can. Therefore: use this trick. Trust me. There are other tricks and tips as well. Read it yourself. These are easy to find. However: this here works!
Mind Palace: A Me Here is something I stumbled across when I was doing research for exam tips: Mind Palaces. I have never heard of that, so obviously getting on to Wiki to see what this is now all about. It is a well-established technique for remembering information. Information in this respect can be anything: deck of cards, decimals of Pi, formula, letters and pronunciation of Russian alphabet, etc. The information can be simple or complex. The technique is to commit to long-term memory the information and an association to a physical object or location (hence it is also called Method of Loci). If you can see the object with your ‘inner eye’ you can recall the associated piece of information. That is simple enough, I should say. So what objects or locations can be used? Walk through your bed room (in your mind) and remember objects. The favourite trophy is a good one. That trophy I can always remember, because it was given to me for an outstanding achievement in grade 1. My very first trophy. The circumference of a circle is 2r * pi. Look at the trophy and repeat the formula. Store it in long-term memory – the brain will do that for you. Next time you need the formulae, you walk through your room, looking at the trophy and bang, there is the formula recalled! I wrote ’31 April 1652’ on my white board. It is a very silly joke and when-
emory Technique ever I look at that I associate it with zebras. Their stripes are individual and no two zebras look the same. And zebras identify each other as they can see the patterns. Are these examples weird? Well, they are real. Here is the next big leap in this: Create your own ‘palace’. An entity entirely in your own mind, populate the rooms with curtains, colours, furniture, anything you like. Associate ‘things’ with the items (and the locations). Even create different palaces for different topics (e.g. palace 1 for maths, palace 2 for history, palace 3 for ..). It is also possible to ‘construct’ in your mind the roads leading to the different palaces and to associate things to these. You get the picture? I think it takes a bit of practice, but I will try it out. Is it new stuff? The roman senators (Cicero the most famous one) used this technique 2,000 years ago. Tried and tested as they say in the classics. Oh yes, is it widely used? Have you ever heard the term ïn the first place .. and in the second place ... Where do you think it is coming from? Just goes to show ... in the first place! Staff

My last tip for university My university series consisted of articles that explained the do’s and don’ts of varsity but moreover they explained the technical terms and lingo of varsity. However, I do need to mention one last immaculate detail: one needs to really enjoy university. In the mist of all the work that needs to be done, the deadlines to be meet and the maintenance of a social life, to enjoy varsity is one important factor to value and stress on. Enjoying varsity for me really lies in finding out stuff about you, linked to your surroundings. Doing what pleases you, be it hiking or taking walks or playing monopoly. It merely lies in the fact of finding time for yourself. Getting enough amounts of sleep. Relaxing and connecting with thyself. For some varsity students, this may sound impractical but let us explore the factor of enjoyment with some random facts linked to this. Firstly, a Harvard study estimated that sleep deprivation costs Ameri-
can companies $63.2 billion a year in lost productivity. In the context of university, sleep deprivation on an individual level may translate to blackouts, missing class or even worse; tests. Not that either of them are not detrimental in effect. Secondly, Stanford researcher Cheri D. Mah found that when she got male basketball players to sleep 10 hours a night, their performances in practice dramatically improved: free-throw and three-point shooting each increased by an average of 9 percent. Additionally, more vacations are similarly beneficial. In 2006, the accounting firm Ernst & Young did an internal study of its employees and found that for each additional 10 hours of vacation employees took, their year-end performance ratings from supervisors (on a scale of one to five) improved by 8 percent. Frequent vacationers were also significantly less likely to leave the firm. The introduction of the enjoyment factor in varsity does allow you to create your own vacation. However, it is safe to say that students must be significantly more likely to leave varsity as it is their aim to graduate after all. Truth be told, as much as I would love the enjoyment factor to pitch up the day before a test or before an assignment due date, it is virtually bad advice. Time management is then crucial; it is after all ‘finding’ time for yourself. Reward yourself on work done and not to be done. Enjoy varsity whilst doing what you are there for. This is definitely advice I would have loved to hear before I got to university.

Water management The global water and food situation is widely debated considering the strong relationship between the two. Thus, water management is a critical input in food production, and farmers all around the world have been cognisant of this. According to reports, agriculture accounts for 70% of water usage. It is used for irrigation of plants, but also for animal consumption (cows, sheep, chicken, etc). Conserving water then means oiptimising the irrigation systems. This is simple mechanical considerations with great savings when done correctly. Other methods of efficient water use in crop production may lie in planting crops that require less water during their growth season. For the first time, scientists have genetically edited plants to use 25% less water without compromising yield. The research, reported in Nature Communications, is part of the international research project Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE). “Making crop plants more water-use efficient is arguably the greatest challenge for current and future plant scientists, said co-first author Johannes Kromdijk, a postdoctoral researcher. However, the heavy water users are animal-source foods which are expected to double by 2050. Therefore water use in livestock production must also be effectively managed. At present, global livestock production demands about 30% of the global agricultural water requirement.
t and Food security Additionally, water is needed to raise livestock, be it cows, chickens, horses, or rabbits. Livestock water use is water associated with livestock watering, feedlots, dairy operations, and other on-farm needs. Other livestock water uses include cooling of facilities for the animals and animal products such as milk, dairy sanitation and wash down of facilities, animal waste-disposal systems, and incidental water losses. This is far more than what the animals actually consume. It starts the debate whether animals will be needed in the future as a food resource. Although several different approaches have been proposed to measure water use in livestock production, there is no clear or consistent method for assessment. This makes it difficult for stakeholders to identify whether there is a direct link between water use and environmental impacts, such as water scarcity and local water quality impacts. Water management in both crop and livestock production needs to be improved in the near future to achieve food security as water is a scarce resource and with the population growth it is only going to get even more scarce.

... A difference Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a public holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after Congress requested a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall/winter holiday season in the U.S. The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted three days, and—as accounted by attendee Edward Winslow—it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims

Unthanksgiving Day also known as The Indigenous Peoples Sunrise Ceremony, is an event held on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay to honor the indigenous peoples of the Americas and promote their rights. It coincides with a similar protest, the National Day of Mourning, held in Massachusetts. Held annually since 1975, the Alcatraz ceremony commemorates the protest event of 1969, where the Alcatraz-Red Power Movement (ARPM) occupied the island. Currently the annual ceremony is organized by the International Indian Treaty Council and American Indian Contemporary Arts. The event is designed to commemorate the survival of Native American peoples following the settlement of Europeans in the Western Hemisphere, which led to enormous economic and cultural losses among the indigenous from disease, warfare and social disruption. Organizers want it to serve in contrast to the traditional American Thanksgiving story in which the Pilgrims supposedly shared a meal with Native Americans
Disney and Christmas: wh Ever wondered why Disney and Christmas are so intertwined? Of course it is also about holidays and (up north) snow and adventure and wishes coming through. Disney is about emotions and tears welling up in the eyes of all viewers. So Christmas would be something to latch on to. … But it does go back a few moons: The ‘real’ one is of course “From all of us to all of you”. The singalong and all the characters. All of them having an appearance and wishing us all a Merry Christmas. That one was first released in 1958. It was 45 minutes to begin with. From 1963 it was a stable feature on American TV (and all over the globe as well). Now it was also used to show snippets of coming releases of Disney films. And 90 minutes was the length of it. The name changed to “A Disney Channel Christmas” and was shown on the Disney Channel. However, in the 1990’s and onwards it was not shown every Christmas. BUT: Denmark, Norway Sweden has kept it as an absolute must every Christmas. Ratings are showing that some 40% of all Swedes are watching it every year. It is right up there with ‘A dinner for one”.
hy so closely associated? Christmas in the US has had a bit of a mixed life.
(From: https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/history-of-christmas/2566272.html) In the first half of the 19th century, Christmas was a very different kind of holiday than it is today. People did not have a set way of celebrating. Christmas was not even an official holiday yet. So, communities around the country honored the day in different ways. Some observed Christmas as an important Christian religious day, honoring the birth of Jesus. Others celebrated the day with parties, music, drinking and eating. And, some communities did not celebrate the day at all. Religion played a big role in how an American might celebrate the holiday. Calvinist Christians banned the celebration of Christmas. But groups such as Episcopalians and Moravians honored the day with religious services and seasonal decorations. As Christmas became more popular, some states declared the day a state holiday. Louisiana was the first state to make the move in 1837. By 1860, 14 other states had followed. It was not until 1870 that President Ulysses Grant made Christmas a federal holiday

Are exams the only w This piece is inspired by several articles and also on personal experiences in school – some moons back in time. The dreaded four hours are starting to dawn on us. We get up in the morning. Breakfast, but not too much. Weet-bix and milk. They taste like my desk in class looks. And fruit. The tips said it is good. And now we stand there. As the doors in the hall slowly open, letting us in. sweaty palms, nervous cough. Others coughing. Chairs being pulled out and the sound like the chalk on the blackboard mom told me about. Brain feels like a primordial soup. Full of life, but not exactly ordered. The whole year crammed in to four hours! Victory or insanity.
Is this really how we should look at it? Is it fair to test a whole year’s learning in four hours? Can it even be done? Admittedly, the evaluation of a student was more than just the exam. It was also taking into account the work done throughout the year. But still!
way to test a student? As far as I remember, certain schools in Denmark dropped exams and relied 100% on evaluations through the year. These were done (I think) every month or every two months – and the student was a part of the evaluation! Did it work? I think the potential employers still liked a final year report. A bit easier to read after all. The other stuff was very verbal. What if a teacher and a student did not go along? Could there be a bit of bias sneaking in? If an exam is there to test a student’s ability to work under pressure, why do we then make the surroundings absolutely terrifying as well? Do I work well if it looks like Dracula’s castle-inside? An exam, evaluated by someone else entirely, would take care of that. However, is an evaluation also context-sensitive? Exams are of course there to standardize evaluations. But if context is important, will all students (and evaluators) read the question the same way? The example on the next page high-lights the problem:
A flawed question!
The exam paper said: “you have a barometer in your hand and with this device you must measure the height of the Leaning Tower in Pisa” One student answered it as follows: “I get to the top of this Leaning Tower, tie a string to the barometer and lower it until it touches the ground. Then I measure the length of the string and there is the height of the tower”. The evaluator failed the student ---- who appealed ----and won. The student later claimed that the obvious answer would be to measure the air pressure at the bottom and then at the top of the tower. Use a bit of maths and there is the answer. However, the student also claimed that in essence there are several answers: “get to the top of the tower. Chuck the barometer over the edge and measure the time it takes before it breaks into a million pieces. A bit of maths and there is the answer. Or even better: “I would go to the souvenir shop next door and tell the owner: I will give you this great barometer if you will tell me the height of this tower” Now you judge context

Mid-term elections
How USA (also) works – Midterm elections We all know about the presidential elections. Every four years, presidency limited to two terms. It is an executive president (meaning he/she can fire and hire and set policies and all great things). But what about congress? Or senate? And the states themselves? There is more to it, so let us look at wiki. Midterm elections in the United States are the general elections held in November every four years, near the midpoint of a president’s fouryear term of office. The next midterm election is November 2018. Federal offices that are up for election during the midterms are members of the United States Congress, including all 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives, and the full terms for 33 or 34 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate. In addition, 34 of the 50 U.S. states elect their governors to four-year terms during midterm elections. Many states also elect officers to their
state legislatures in midterm years. There are also elections held at the municipal level. On the ballot are many mayors, other local public offices, and a wide variety of citizen initiatives. Midterm elections usually see the president’s party lose seats in Congress, and also frequently see the president’s intraparty opponents gain power. OK, that is Wiki. But why are midterm elections important? Obviously because the presidential party might lose the majority in the senate and/or congress. If so, the life of the president is not going to be easy as the congress can block laws, filibuster or any other nasty trick in the book. The most important part is that the voters may turn on a sitting president and vote against the president’s party in droves and showing their unhappiness. Sure, the president may not act on it, but if it is more than the usual loss of votes, it is a serious indication of the country’s mood. THAT is important. A sitting president, with a serious loss of votes, may consider how the re-election will go with only another two years to go. It is not a given that a sitting president will be voted in after the first four years. The mid-term elections will give a clear indication of this and also provide the parties an opportunity to sharpen their messages. Of course the states and the municipalities own elections are important, but that is much more of a local affair (even the little town’s dog catcher is voted on). It may not be perfect, but democracy is as close to the electorate as possible.
How do they do the eVoting in the US
Wiki: Voters casting their ballots in polling places record their votes most commonly with optical scan voting machines or DRE voting machines. Voting machine selection is typically done through a state’s local election jurisdiction including counties, cities, and townships. Many of these local jurisdictions have changed their voting equipment since 2000 due to the passage of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), which allocated funds for the replacement of lever machine and punch card voting equipment. This is from a different source: There are three types of Electronic voting in USA which can be identified as: Paper based E vote system, Direct recording electronic system and Internet Voting. The Paper based E vote system has a touchscreen added for the voters use. This system will print a hardcopy of the ballot once the voter is done. This ballot needs to be passed to the election officer so it can be counted. The Direct recording electronic system has a touchscreen with digital swipe card buttons
e voting over there? which will be used in order to make the choices. All votes are stored in a physical memory device which are sent to a special voting station for their results. Lastly Internet voting is the type of vote that is done in remote locations. This type of voting service is not supervised by governmental representatives. The most common devices used for this type of vote are: Personal computer, Television via Internet also known as i-voting and mobile phone. Nowadays all states in the US use Electronic voting because it provides less cost, improve accessibility for voters with disabilities, faster results, greater accuracy and low risk of mechanical and human errors (source: http://www.bravenewballot.org/electronic-voting-in-usa/). Here is a report – heavy reading – on it all: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/251243313_ The_Current_State_of_Electronic_Voting_in_the_United_ States
We have a way to go, but it will be reality pretty soon!
The Christmas dinner
This is surely not the same across the globe! Look on: (all from Wiki) English/American tradition (and therefore also us!) Turkey – of course. The turkey appeared on Christmas tables in England in the 16th century, and popular history tells of King Henry VIII being the first English monarch to have turkey for Christmas. Up until then it could have been even Swan (yes!) and goose.
Japan – different, always A successful advertising campaign in the 1970s made eating at KFC around Christmas a national custom. Its chicken meals are so popular during the season that stores take reservations months in advance. Sweden – it means fish Lutefisk is dried whitefish like cod treated with lye. The first step is soaking the fish in cold water for five to six days. The saturated fish is then soaked in cold water and lye for an additional two days. The fish swells during this soaking, and its protein content decreases by more than 50 percent, producing a jelly-like consistency. When this treatment is finished, the fish is caustic, with a pH of 11–12. To make the fish edible, a final treatment of yet another four to six days of soaking in cold water is needed. Eventually, the lutefisk is ready to be cooked. I have tasted it! It is an acquired taste. Mexico – a traditional drink Champurrado is a chocolate-based thick Mexican drink, prepared with either masa de maíz (lime-treated-corn dough), masa harina (a dried version of this dough), or corn flour,
panela; water or milk; and occasionally containing cinnamon, anise seed, or vanilla. Ground nuts, orange zest, and egg can also be employed to thicken and enrich the drink. I could do that, I think. Italy – the main dish The secondo is very different in the two areas. In Northern Italy they usually eat poultry, often filled, or roasted or boiled and seasoned with sauces, like mostarda. In Southern Italy they eat the fried capitone eel, which is typical of Christmas Eve, because this is a fasting day. Poland
The meal is meatless, honouring Catholic tradition. Many households also prepare a great variety of special Christmas dishes, typically numbering 12 in honor of the 12 apostles. Dishes include: stuffed carp, fried carp, herring in wine sauce, herring in cream sauce, fruit compote, vegetable salad, soup, boiled potatoes, mushroom cream sauce, sauerkraut, and makowiec (poppy seed rolled cake). Turning water into petrol – a great hoax (from wiki) In the United States, the best known claim to have created a gasoline pill was the work of one Guido Franch, who was active from the 1950s through the 1970s. Franch called the resulting liquid Mota fuel, mota being atom spelled backwards. Guido Franch was a blue collar worker who lived in Livingston, Illinois. His invention was a green powder that was added to water, which he claimed had actually been invented by a fictitious German scientist named Dr. Alexander Kraft. Franch took money from a number of small investors who read about his claims in the National Tattler or a similar publication. In what became a frequent motif, he claimed that the water-into-gasoline powder formula could not be disclosed for fear that the oil industry would have it suppressed. Franch, when pressed into providing samples of his transmutation powder, produced samples of green food coloring. As a result of his activities, Franch was prosecuted several times for fraud. His first trial in 1954 resulted in his acquittal when a prosecution witness admitted that it might be possible that “mota fuel” worked. His second trial in 1979 resulted in his conviction. But it still goes on!
