Holidays That is it for this year. A year that has been marked by the last Covid things. Still not so easy, but we made it. We have plenty of things for you in this last issue for the year. Holidays are here now, and we have suggested a lot of activities.
Not a full list of things, but a selection. Read on and see these as examples. Be active and investigate what is cooking in your area - or even overseas. On the international front we have a look at the US Mid-term elections. It is going to impact us, so we can just as well get to know the elements in this. COP 27 has finished. Hope and not so much action. Was it then a waste? not really, but the outcome was disappointing. Next time will be COP 28 in Dubai and it is time to act now. ... and we look at fashion for 2023. This is the one i love! go see what the colour for 2023 is and how different designers predict what we will be wearing for summer. Remember one thing: boots for winter - fine - but please not brown. Good read!

I am ‘outta’ here Enjoy the break! holidays This is it for this year! Holidays are here – finally! But then what to do? Holidays can be full of activities that we otherwise never get around to. Visit the zoo? Getting involved in feeding schemes at the zoo can be something completely different. We have tried to list some suggestions. It is not a full list of everything, but more examples of things that are out there. Of course it can be ‘educational’ but look at it more like ‘edutainment’. Learn while having fun. Going on holiday is an option. It does involve money and that is hard to get hold on in today’s environment. We have suggested a few things that might be worth looking at. The absolute top scoring thing is the European railway pass. Traveling throughout Europe is an experience and needs to be done while still youth. USA is another option. That might be a bit expensive but worth it. Even if it entails saving up for a whole year and planning a trip in 2023. The other option is to work during holidays. It might be more fun than work as it is again something completely different from school. Enjoy it all – whatever you choose to do!
School holidays - and don’t get bored. Plenty of things out there We start with Cape Town. Just because it is there – lol. Ever visited the Two Oceans Aquarium? That is an experience. Not only is it a giant ‘fish tank’ it is also possible to scuba-dive with sharks and stingrays and other fish. No experience is required! Just to be underneath the tank is amazing. Nothing like it to be found anywhere really! It is a bit on the expensive side, but if you can afford it, it is an experience! Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome This is an ‘old friend’ which has been shined up. The digital dome projects more than just the stars. This is something out of this world – literally. Having a guided tour in the universe is both exciting and meaningful. And the best part? Not terrible expensive!
Something else: fancy skateboarding? Like the professionals? Here it is: V&A skate park: Skate and scooter park It is the first skate park of this quality built within the city to world class skate park standards using lightweight construction. Includes combination of various skate and scooter elements including a bowl with spine and pump hump, quarter pipes, layback bank, gaps, a small plaza with hubba’s and rails, a frame set and a long ledge and rail. It was designed by California Skateparks in the USA with local input from local talent Marc Baker at CA Skateparks Africa. Northern Cape: I found something: The Augrabies Falls National Park covers an area of 820km² and stretches along the Orange River. The name Augrabies was derived from Ankoerebis (literally the “place of big noises”), the Khoikhoi people’s original name for the waterfall. Go on a day hike, a night drive or a canoe safari. Take your mountain bike out for spin or spend an afternoon birdwatching. Ever done horse riding? Like the wild west? Here is the opportunity in Mpumalanga. Kaapsehoop Horse Trails is a well-known and peaceful retreat on the Drakensberg escarpment, 35km from Nelspruit, Mpumalanga in South Africa. With 30 years of trail riding experience Christo works on a natural horsemanship basis. Here you can enjoy comfortable and safe horse riding whether a beginner or an experienced rider, on the well-trained cross-bred horses
More things to do And JoBurg? Jozix: Situated in Bryanston, this outdoor adventure park offers unique and exhilarating experiences for young and old (ages 5 – 75), with a large variety of action packed activities, including the harness-free inflatable action world, zorb, mountain boarding, the big air krush cushion jump, big wheel tike drifting and much more. I only mention a few (that I could enjoy): Zorbing: Hydro Zorbing Hydro Zorbing (or Water Zorbing) is an invigorating mix between a water chute and a rollercoaster which allows participants to sail, unharnessed, down the 200m hill accompanied by 40L of water. Harness Zorbing But, if your prefer the drier adventure then we’d suggest Harness Zorbing would be more your thing as it allows participants to enjoy the comfort and security of being safe (and dry, i.e. without the water) strapped into the Zorbing ball as you make your way at high-speed to the bottom of the hill! ... and a lot more Dirty riders. I tried to find an overview of what they offer. No luck! But here are some examples from their website.
Quad biking: Our experienced guides will take you out of your comfort zone for a one or two-hour trail through bush trees and occasionally through mud and puddles, dependent on rainfall. This is a truly picturesque, adrenaline pumping fun activity to be tried by all. If Fear is not a Factor and you think you have what it takes, then this is a MUST experience! Your team edges you on as you face some unpredictable challenges that are guaranteed to be loads of fun. Hints of what’s instore for you: Blindfold water/mud walk, Mopani eating, Ooze, Guess the taste, Conquer the heights, Take the pain, Dodge ball, Trust (Blindfold Quads) Contestants are judged and winners declared. White water: Tackle a fun filled 4km river trip to our exit points. Meet for admin and issue of equipment for the excursion. Once kitted we take a leisurely road trip to the launch site 4km’s upriver from exit point. The rafting trips include grade 1 and 2 rapids with weirs that can become grade 3 or 4. The river is abundant with birds and wildlife. Have fun!
Travel Europe – by rail First things first. European rail network is luxurious. It is not old dirty coaches or something. This is air travel standard. Secondly: it is fast and on time – speeds vary but is 300 km/h or more. Imagine going to Polokwane in less than an hour! European rail networks are cooperating and are offering youth an opportunity to see Europe – the rail-pass is the thing. How does it work? For a small fee, you can travel unlimited in Europe on the entire rail network for a month. Simple! Of course you can book into a hotel, but the youth hostels in Europe are safe, clean and it is meeting a youth culture we otherwise never see. Here is a typical situation: entering the train
(during summer – yes, I know about the north and south summers, but try anyway). Typically the train will have a massive influx of youth as the Eurail is popular. In minutes you will meet other youth and get to know where they come from. Now you may be on your way to Berlin but your new friends are going to Madrid. So you change plans and now there is a group of you. Some from Norway, some from Bulgaria, Some from France. And all languages are used – to great confusion. Friendships are formed across borders and the inspiration of learning other cultures will be an experience forever. Is it cheap? Well, it is not expensive. Hostels are not expensive either. There is a catch though: travelling on a South African passport might require visas in advance. It somehow means the flexibility can go out the window. The solution is of course to apply for a ton of visas, but that is both costly and time consuming. There is no real solution on this. Maybe the planning can at least provide something. It is possible to plan a trip from UK, through France to Germany. Then go to Austria and finishing off in Italy. Such a trip can be planned and visas can be obtained. Although Eurail can be used in 33 countries, it will otherwise be a total mission. Good luck!
Situated on the picturesque Salvokop, the 52-hectar site currently features five individual function venues. With its award-winning architecture, breath-taking views of Pretoria and unsurpassed atmosphere, Freedom Park offers the ideal venue for all corporate events. Freedom Park was conceptualised so we remember our history and what we went through as a nation.
December Activities Reconciliation Walk Honouring Nelson Mandela Nine years ago, the world fell into instant mourning following the death of former President Nelson Mandela. On this ninth anniversary of the late Nelson Mandela, many continue pay tribute to his life, his legacy, and the contribution he made, not only to South Africa, but to mankind. As our former Patron-In-Chief; Freedom Park will honour our former President with a Reconciliation Walk. As we walk, we are reminded to continue to strive to emulate the ideals that Madiba stood for; build our national unity by wiping away the tears and covering the
wounds of a painful past. The intended Reconciliation Walk will pay homage to Madiba by asking all South Africans from all walks of life to pledge to increase their efforts to reach out towards one another in peace, understanding and tolerance. UBUNTU FESTIVAL – 16 December 2022 The festival is intended to commemorate Reconciliation month and to create an awareness on the benefits of a free nation. Music as an artform has the capacity to draw from and incorporate other artforms like dance, graphic arts, poetry, talks, painting, drama and film to name but a few. This will allow us to grow the festival into an interactive landscape that opens our people to a dialogue that uses different mediums to communicate their aspirations of Nation Building and citizenry.
The event will feature artists with a national and international footprint. There will also be performances from young artists who are in band formations that are from different racial groups and ethnic backgrounds. This encourages tolerance and allows for a cultural identity that draws from all of us, giving us a unique voice. An audience composed of different racial groups and ethnic backgrounds is expected to attend.

This can be cheap or it can be expensive, but one thing is for sure: it is an experience that will never fade. Let us first kill a few myths: just because US is (mostly) English speaking does not mean it is similar to UK or South Africa. It is a world apart – literally. US is vast! We may think there is sort of one culture. Not so – there are many, as many as we have peoples in the world. Remember, US is based on immigrants from the entire world. You will meet old ladies in New York who can only speak Italian, because that is where they come from – and there was never a need to speak anything else! True! I know. Go to Boston and you are in Ireland. Go to New Orleans and you are in Spain or France. … and all of it mixed with a unique American flavour. Then how to travel? It is possible to go there by yourself and enjoy, but I will recommend planned tours. Those can be expensive. Starting at some R35,000 for say 9 days. Is it worth it? Yes, it is as the guide will know much more about what to do and see. Here we are talking (typically) of guides who have been working with non-Americans for years. They know!
I have provided a few links for you to consider, (here and here) but do your own research. Travelling in US is like being in a movie in many ways. Going to a baseball match is like being in the movie. The American football game is special. Walking in New York, seeing the Golden Gate bridge, white-water rafting down the gorge (the Colorado river – and that is SCARY – I have done it!) Go to Denver and be absorbed into First Nation cultures. And Disney and ….. USA is in many ways a land of pleasure. It is geared towards a tourist experience. Never mind that a lot of the tourists are all Americans. The general rule is: American are friendly and will always help you out… but not all, so just be street-smart anyway. Good luck!
Activities to stay mentally fit Schooling comprises of not just sitting in class and learning but a constant pressure to pass examinations and chase deadlines. The workload increases as we move to higher education and that ultimately affects our mental health. However, that can’t be the call to quit; instead, there are activities that one can practise in order to stay mentally fit. Giving your brain a break is as important as spending enough time on your academic work as the two result in a good academic record. ‘Brain breaks’ include sitting quietly for some time (it can be for few minutes then increased as the skill is mastered). During this break, one can do breathing exercises, yoga or meditate. This allows the mind to rest and reduces the pressure caused by academic work as well as one’s daily hassles. For people that struggle with staying focused, there are activities that help with inducing one’s happy mood while also relaxing the mind. Dance-meditation is one of the activities that can be done by people who struggle to focus. Although it is
usually done in a group, it can also be done alone. Dance-meditation can include quiet exercises with eyes closed on the mat or active dancing with eyes closed. Exercises or active dancing helps the mind to focus on movements, thereby reducing pressure. Moreover, hobbies reduce stress and improve mood, so one can make time for activities that he or she enjoys. It is always a shock to many people when I share that I became an A student only in university, which could be deemed as peculiar because the workload increased.
I learned that I was supposed to allocate leisure and quiet time as much as I was devoted to my studies. This reduced stress; thus, enabling me to grasp information at a faster pace and not feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes the issue is not with the content or the teacher, but with mental fitness.
Lerato Pitso
Our newest writer! Lerato Pitso Please welcome Lerato who will be writing for us. Again a remarkable person who is willing to share her views with us. Here is her story and who she is My name is Lerato Violet Pitso, a final year student at the University of the Free State (UFS) studying Bachelor of Social Sciences (majoring in Criminology and Sociology), a model, Miss Supranational Lesotho 2023 and a writing enthusiast. My passion for modelling, writing and a chosen career path all stem from the lessons I learned in the three years that I spent trying to discover myself after matriculating. In 2017, which is the year right after I completed high school, a stranger told me on Instagram that I had the potential to be a model then introduced me to a modelling agency in Maseru, Lesotho. As an amateur in the modelling industry, my path was challenging because I had to learn the modelling etiquette as well as personalizing the lessons, which is highly recommended in modelling – to do the same activity with all other models but exude your uniqueness. This was mostly challenging because I didn’t know myself. That is when I
began expressing my feelings on paper and have continued to this day. When I read my pieces later on, I realized how they became therapeutic and helped me discover myself; and decided to share my thoughts with other people who may need help. I do this by sometimes shooting videos of myself where I talk about what I have written and share them on Instagram. Some of my writings made me realize that I am passionate about social development and strongly against unfair treatment of any person. Additionally, modelling exposed me to charity initiatives that influenced me to want to study a course that can allow me to work directly with people and help those who cannot help themselves. Criminology is scientifically studying crime and criminal behaviour with the aim of understanding why certain crimes happen and preventative measures that can be put in place. Sociology focuses on the society’s social behaviour, as well as social interactions in the everyday life. My ultimate goal is to impart skills on how to sustain oneself in fundamental aspects of life such as economically, socially and mentally. Pageantry has taught me that education alone is not enough to succeed as it teaches self-confidence and eagerness to take up space and be involved in one’s society. As Miss Supranational Lesotho 2023, I am expected to engage in social issues and contribute to their alleviation. Knowledge without the courage to use it is futile.
Lerato Pitso
My perspective on COP27 The recent Conference Of Parties (COP) 27 was held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, for two weeks. In this conference, more than 100 Heads of State and Governments were in attendance all with the aim of addressing climate change; a topic that has gone from being perceived as an abstract phenomenon to a global priority. So, what is my opinion on the conference itself? In all honesty, climate change is real and is affecting many livelihoods. That is evident and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report established that the climate is changing, and human activity is at the core of causing climate change. Therefore, human beings are supposed to find ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change. COP is seen as one of the mechanisms to achieve this mitigation and adaptation to climate change, which looks different for every nation, country and continent. However, the conference itself is somehow a very singular way of mitigating climate change. Why do I say this?
To give you a back story, the IPCC report stated that human activity warmed the climate at a rate that is unprecedented in at least the last 2000 years. When this fact is mentioned, you think of the start of the Industrial Revolution, in about 1750, where human activities such as burning fossil fuels, including coal and oil, have increased greenhouse gas concentrations in our atmosphere. This industrial revolution gave birth to the highest rates of energy consumption which are now commonly associated with developed countries, and this is a major cause of global greenhouse gases.
Developed nations become well off nations due to exploring and utilising more energy in their industrial activities that is also higher than developing nations. Therefore, the developed nations and their contribution to climate change has been a widely discussed topic in COP and it is always highlighted that the non-developed nations are the ones taking the brunt, because climate change affects everyone. PS: Cows are responsible for 14,5% of greenhouse gas (Methane). Methane is 30 times more potent than CO2; hence there are calls for getting rid of beef on the menu
Even though this is true, the conference tends to be about highlighting this point and finding ways for the ‘big sister/brother’ who is allegedly responsible for the damages to pay ‘little sister/brother’ for the damages incurred; this is a common thread as fund after fund is established. However, these funds (the processes and core architect) are often unclear or not established. That is where COP needs to improve on. Focus on the groundwork, the funds that are in place, how are they customised (both in adapting and mitigating) to fit the target. Feasible solutions already exist (especially in relation to climate change adaptation), but how do we ensure that these solutions reach vulnerable communities. The practical knowledge and mechanisms that come out of the conference must be executed by every human being.

Sell tickets for your event Final exam: Selling Tickets As an event planner it’s up to you to make an event a success and driving ticket sales is one of the most important aspects. Let me share a few pointers on this subject matter When to start selling tickets As soon as you announce the event date, tickets need to be available immediately. To put it in simple terms: make sure that tickets are available three months prior to the event as this will give your target audience time to budget and to also plan accordingly so that then can come to your event. Sell tickets on mobile Make sure your tickets are available online as this will make it is easy for your target audience to purchase tickets.
Share event details on social media Ccurrently social media is one of the best platforms to promote an event. We are all using social media to communicate and also to find places of entertainment. You will be able to attract people who are a bit further from you but who are also willing to attend your event Have a good lineup of entertainment for the day Having a good line up of entertainers is very important in order to drive ticket sales so you need to have performers or deejays that have an impact so that people will be drawn towards your event and would want to attend and hence that will drive tickets sales Share testimonial from the last event Once people hear about your previous events and how successful they were it makes others also interested in attending the next one so sharing testimonials is very important. Last but not least have posters in and around your area so that people know where the event will take place and where the tickets are available Other ways of driving your sales would be by creating video content that advertises your event. Make sure that the video is attractive and it gets straight to the point. Of course this will be on social media! These are some of the few steps you can follow in order for you to drive your ticket sales and have a successful and lucrative event

New Exhibitions
We added two new exhibitions to our collection on the floor. The 4IR and Mirror Maze exhibitions
4IR Exhibition The 4IR exhibition currently hosts the Humanoids (two small ones and the big one called Pepper), Virtual reality Station, Augmented Reality and the interactive displays integrated with of a number of TV screens. This concept is through the touch screen located at the entrance to the center. Interactive display section has been created where visitors are encouraged to use traditional touch screens to immerse themselves in games and content around Science Technology Engineering and Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).
Children are provided with the opportunity to play games to train their analytical ability, improve their ability to solve puzzles and chal-
lenges. They are also challenged to explore more traditional content style, such as exploration of subjects including how Artificial Intelligence works, Machine Learning, how data transfers over networks etc. Science Exploration While traditional science teaching has complex challenges around logistics, safety and costs. VR has none of these limitations. Experiments are done as often as needed with no physical costs of materials or safety concerns. Students can learn about physics and chemistry, life science etc. in a safe environment. Within VR learning occurs without any distract but with full immersion. Learning and understanding mathematics becomes easier and more fun inside of VR due to the nature of games and how they are designed. This is designed to make learning and exploration real fun especially for little ones. Wide learning opportunities exist through this exhibition, children have many prospects to learn on, e.g. google earth exploration experience. With Google Earth VR, children can travel to almost any place in the world. They can fly all over the world and explore any city, any monument and landmark anywhere in the world. The exhibition has two different types of humanoids the small one (called Sanbot Max and the Bigger one called Pepper). The Sanbot Max robot was designed to be implemented into numerous kinds of business scenarios, providing customers and staff members with intelligent and efficient services. Pepper is a semi-humanoid robot, which means that a human has to control it. It is designed with the ability to read emotions. Pepper recognizes faces and basic human emotion.
Drones and Mirror Maze Drones Pilots at the Clubhouse Did you know that the Clubhouse has three certified drone pilots? They also have 10 DJI Tell drones that they will used for their drone course. They are currently putting together content for the said course. In addition, the Clubhouse offers programmes such as Teach Fundamentals of drones, real-life applications of drones: namely surveillance using object identification and tracking to videography for commercials and other media use. This includes python programming that covers drone automation.
Mirror Maze Exhibit A mirror is an object that reflects an image. Light that bounces off a mirror will show an image of whatever is in front of it, when focused through the lens of the eye or a camera. Mirrors reverse the direction of the image in an equal yet opposite angle from which the light shines upon it. This allows the viewer to see themselves or objects behind them, or even objects that are at an angle from them but out of their field of view, such as around a corner. Natural mirrors prehistoric times, water, but people turing mirrors out rials for thousands metals, and glass. metals like silver often used due to applied as a thin cause of its natuhard surface.

A maze is a path or collection of paths, typically from an entrance to a goal. The word is used to refer both to branching tour puzzles through which the solver must find a route, and to simpler non-branching patterns that lead unambiguously through a convoluted layout to a goal. The pathways and walls in a maze are typically fixed, but puzzles in which the walls and paths can change during the game are also categorised as mazes or tour puzzles Mirror Maze The mirror maze itself is a pattern, combining several characteristics of geometric patterns: repetition, symmetry and tessellation using repeated equilateral triangles. These triangles fit together without any gaps or overlaps, creating a tessellation. Mirrored surfaces all around reflect the pattern so that it repeats and appears infinite.
The value of a holistic education where nurturing EQ is equally as important to personal growth as developing learners’ IQ
Students at the Maharishi Invincibility Institute explain the value of a consciousness-based education in today’s education practices Gone are the days when it’s enough to simply provide a teacher and syllabus to learners, hoping they will take in information and perform well. Today, learning is about the holistic development of young people, improving not only their academic skills but also their emotional intelligence to make a meaningful difference in society. The success of this consciousness-based approach is exemplified by South Africa’s Maharishi Invincibility Institute (MI), which has helped almost 20 000 graduates to launch careers in finance, banking, advertising, technology, management consulting and more. The non-profit private education and training provider is unique in that it offers transcendental meditation, yoga and nature excursions to develop the full potential of every student. “I can honestly say my full human potential is advancing,” says 23-year-old Masego Phaloane, a fourth-year student who grew up in Soweto. “I have developed academically, and my physical and mental wellbeing is much improved.”
This experience has strengthened his ambition to enter the political sphere upon completion of his studies. Limpopo’s Charlotte Marema, 24, followed in the footsteps of a relative who also attended MI. “The Insurance Academy has given me the opportunity to explore the insurance field, and obviously, this will require me to communicate with customers” says Marema. Marema was particularly grateful to MI during the height of Covid-19 when it provided students with data so they could continue learning at home. According to Soweto resident Charisse Lupafya, MI makes every student feel like they are part of a family. “Each lecturer is devoted to holding your hand throughout your studies to get the best results. I also love how they incorporate consciousness-based education to help students release stress and obtain high marks,” she says. So great has the impact been on students that Lupafya considers the institute a “blessing” to all who thought their lives would amount to nothing after finishing high school. “We were given that second chance and shown that you will not always be rejected in life”. The institute attributes a lot of its success to the backing of strategic partners, notably the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation, which has contributed more than R2-million to implementing programmes and projects. Crypto currencies took a tumble. A really bad one. This is all inspired by CNN. What happened? It is complicated, but let us look at the obvious. FTX was one of the biggest crypto-exchanges. Says CNN: “Sam Bankman-Fried, the 30-year-old crypto titan and chief executive of FTX, watched billions of his fortune evaporate in a bankruptcy filing that shook the trillion-dollar industry to its core”. FTX was valued at $32 bn. Let us look at a few facts about currencies in general. What determines the value (or desirability) of a currency? As a currency is issued by a nation-state it is the underlying factors. These are typically a countries ability to repay loans, inflation, balance of payments, political stability etc. No surprise here. What determines the value of a crypto currency? Well, you still need a typical currency to buy crypto.
A crypto is therefore an asset that can be traded like stocks on the stock market. The value is determined by the amount of ‘wallets’ out there together with the market capitalization. In essence: how much money has the issuer got. A crypto is typically traded in dollars. You can pay with crypto, but it is like paying with say, 25% of stocks in IBM, 50% in car parts and the rest in the future. The value of a crypto can move and up down depending on how much there is mined and who is buying. Crypto is attractive as the buying and selling and holdings are all in the open thanks to block-chain (read on that during the holidays). FTX (according to newspaper articles) tokens were held by Friedman’s hedge fund named Alameda. As Alameda had a disproportionate amount of tokens, the foundation might be shaky. And it was! A slight wobble would cause the fund to collapse. In comes Binance (a bigger rival) that then dumps $580 million of FTX. FTX can’t pay it up and then other investors go for the kill. Binance then announced that they might buy or at least bail FTX. That did not happen either. FTX is short of $8 bn and Friedman’s own fortune (valued at $15 bn) is down to $1 bn or even less. In essence, no money there. The saga exposed one thing: Deposits in a bank are protected, but not so with cryptos. Investors might have lost it all!
Here to stay All of this also had a negative impact on the more ‘established’ crypto in the likes of Bitcoin and Ether. Bitcoin just lost 75% of its value. Now we may ask ourselves: was this all caused because of reckless business by one individual? Sounds impossible! And it is! After all, the global financial markets have seen disasters before. Trading in futures and so on have also caused epic fails in the past. So cryptos can fail and that proves one thing only: Trade at your own risk. Says CNN: “In addition to hiking interest rates, the Federal Reserve has been shrinking its balance sheet since June, removing money from financial markets to cool the economy in its fight against inflation”. In essence: no money for risky investments as in cryptos. Cryptos used to be sponges for excess money for investments, but with less money in circulation, investors are now very risk-averse. That means that they are getting out of cryptos. What is the future for cryptos? Was it all a fad? We have to look at cryptos as any other new thing to trade in. True that cryptos are digital
and there is a lot of new technology involved in it, but the basic is the same as trading in pork bellies. Is it then still possible to pay in cryptos? Buying a new Tesla? Yes, it probably is. Here is the trick: The price of a Tesla is listed in US dollars. You pay with the equivalent in cryptos (Bitcoin). Tesla has to evaluate if the value of Bitcoin is going up or down and make a decision to either hold on to the crypto (if they think it is going up) or get rid of it (if they think it is going down). It is the same as if you want to buy a Tesla with say Russian currency. Cryptos will probably stay because of the new technology applied. Block-chain is a neat way of ensuring transparency, the way a ‘wallet’ is handled is neat and pointing into the future and so on. What we have to understand is that a crypto is just another instrument in financial trading. Look at how futures are handled. The difference is the same. Crypto currencies are not real currencies. They are deriviatives! A typical currency (our rand) is linked to the national economy. There is a reserve bank somewhere out there that will regulate inflation and monetary policies. That is not how crytos work. Get confused at your own peril. Trade if you want to, but don’t cry if you lose it all.
The real risky thing: Futures It is something very simple. For once not complicated. You buy or sell a commodity at a certain price for delivery at a set date into the future. What can it be? In reality it can be anything. Gold, silver, interest rate swaps, anything. We have a Futures Exchanges. These are organisations providing standardized contracts, terms and conditions, etc, etc. And now we have clearing houses. Wiki says: “Futures exchanges provide access to clearing houses that stand in the middle of every trade. Suppose trader A purchases US$145,000 of gold futures contracts from trader B. Trader A really bought a futures contract to buy US$145,000 of gold from the clearing house at a future time, and trader B really has a contract to sell US$145,000 to the clearing house at that same time. Since the clearing house took on the obligation of both sides of that
trade, trader A does not have to worry about trader B becoming unable or unwilling to settle the contract – they do not have to worry about trader B’s credit risk. Trader A only has to worry about the ability of the clearing house to fulfill their contracts. Do we see where this goes? The clearing house can be a crypto exchange, like FTX and Binance. Trading in cryptos is like trading in futures. It is just another derivative. You bet on which way the crypto will go. However, there are no real underlying asset base. It is not backed by any physical means. It is based on perception. “I think Bitcoin is safe because there are so many people on it. Therefore I buy bitcoin and will keep it for one month and then sell because I think the price goes up”. Is this how it goes? So what makes Futures so risky? Because it is hard to predict what will happen, even tomorrow. And this is not a game. Some of the Futures are sensible (price of pork bellies can be predicted with a reasonable certainty), but what about gold price? Interest rate in EU next year? Municipal bonds in US? bank stocks? Crypto prices in December – based on trust? Futures can be anything – and they are. Maybe rather go to the casino.
US Mid-term: full of surprises US Mid-term elections rolled around. It was full of surprises – and that was not surprising. All of this is inspired by CNN and other sources. What were the predictions or the hopes? That is a question which has got no clear answer. Surprisingly. The republicans had hoped for a ‘red wave’ (the colour of the republican party is red. The democrats are blue). That wave was not like a tsunami. It was not a wave, it was hardly a ripple. That was surprising. The typical mid-term will see the ruling party losing support. That did not really happen. The typical picture is that republicans carry the senate and the Democrats carry the house. This time the Democrats took the senate with a ‘clear’ lead that might just be cemented by the run-off elections in Georgia. The republicans took the house with just as ‘clear’ a lead (219 seats with 218 needed for parity). This was surprising.
What does it all mean? The vice president (Harris) still has the tie-breaking vote at the senate. The republicans can block a lot of legislation and also introduce new measures. The first one is already on its way: Let trump off the hook! Although the American constitution is a master piece in terms of having thought through a lot of possibilities and ‘what-if’s’, the founding fathers might not have anticipated the militancy of what we have seen. Political intolerance is at its highest and somehow the political temperature needs to be taken down before it gets into civil-war territory. We also see a more ‘aligned’ political reality. There seems to be far less dissent within the parties. Admittedly, the democratic representatives in the house have always been more independent. It feels like herding cats is the best example. Less so in the Republican camp. However, the republicans seems to be focused on creating a ‘block’ mentality. That was never anticipated. The blame-game has started in the Republican party. Was it all Trump’s fault or did he avert a disaster? One thing did come through loud and clear: ‘support trump’s lies about the 2020 election or else…’ That split the party but also had side-effects: republican voters got painted with the same brush, whether they were trump supporters or not. And not all Republicans are ‘crazy’.
Where did it go wrong? Biden’s popularity was not great going into the mid-terms. The presidential factor cannot be overlooked, but may have counted for some of the losses in the house. It is my opinion that the red tsunami became a ripple in the pond because of the negative with the Trump factor (there are also positives) and the militancy of the Republican right-wing. The mid-term elections are very much focused on the individual states and not necessarily on the federal policies and the global picture. De Santis’ campaign in Florida is a good example. Focus on what is close to the voters (Florida) and prove that you are the best for the state (Florida). Trump’s obsession with supporting candidates that endorsed his ‘big lie’ about the 2020 election did have consequences. The voters did not want to fight the 2020 election again, and that meant that his handpicked candidates lost. That was the bigger picture and that was not surprising.
Candidates (like De Santis) who ran a campaign focused on the future and local issues did far better. Is it a rejection of Trump? Not necessarily. Some candidates avoided the 2020 election but still endorsed the positives of Trump’s presidency. They did better. The big question is now. Trump’s base. As one put it: “Trump is very popular .. among his supporters”. Meaning: his popularity is now in question in the broader sense. If the Republicans cannot get a common policy together, Trump will split the party before the presidential election in 2024. As it is stands right now, we see two years of trench warfare which might paralyse the US in governing the country. The budget debacles and the automatic caps on expenditure may be the norm and that will have dramatic effects on everything. We might see a house that is more interested in pursuing ‘drama’ instead of governing. All of that will be the lead-in to the presidential elections in 2024. In many ways, the mid-terms are indications of what will be on the menu for the next presidential election. The test for the Republicans will be to seriously look at the Trump factor: is it a hindrance or a blessing? Does the trump base really swing the vote? Trump has declared he will run in 2024. However, he still needs to be nominated and that might be a hurdle and not a given after all.
High hopes and few expectations There was a hope that this would be a continuation of Paris. That was not to be. This is al inspired by articles from mainly BBC and other sources. COP27 ran over several days and had world leaders in attendance. Scientists in abundance also graced this occasion. And the fossil fuel lobby was out in full force. 636 attended as delegates or as country representatives. So what were the two main things that came out of it all? There is now a fund for loss and damage due to climate change impact. It is going to be funded with $100 bn. It is huge and about time. Put this in the context of the Pakistani floods which requires some $30 bn for rebuilding. The Pacific Islands which are
disappearing due to rising water levels? Is it even enough? The harsh reality is probably: it is not enough, but where must more come from?
supposed to finish Friday.
This agreement was hammered out in the early hours of Sunday as workers were busy dismantling the venue. After all, COP27 was
The positive side is that there was a sense of ‘we are in it together’. The reality is sinking in that climate change will impact everybody. The dykes in Netherlands might not be enough, the wildfires in California will be even more out of control. The Thames will kill London. The monsoons will be more violent. Now we are not talking remote places and polar bears disappearing. We are talking industrial nations where their entire countries will be hit hard. Is it then enough? We may just see national budgets coming together, but the real culprit was not attacked head-on: rising temperatures. Global warming is directly linked to our burning of fossil fuels and the increase in greenhouse gasses. The 1,5 degrees is the absolute minimum we can get away with but we are already at an increase of 1,1 degrees. This is where the commitment comes in. US, EU and other ‘rich’ countries were adamant that fossil fuels had to go. But the final text was way too weak on this point.
The dilemma of fossil fuels. The industrial revolution demanded energy and it was readily available. COAL. The entire infra-structure got geared towards coal and later oil as well. We have laws regulating CO2 emissions from cars, and the central heating per house in US and Europe is less focused on oil. But the electricity grid is coal and oil. Renewable energy sources (typically wind and solar) are not necessarily built close to industries (more out in the open landscape), so a whole new effort is needed to extend the grid out to remote places. Maybe money is not the problem, but engineering efforts require time. It is easy to put up a windmill, but pulling the cables out there is still a task. China really only got on the heavy industrialization from the 1950s with an accelerated effort from the 1980s. This meant coal. True that China is the absolute leader in solar technology, but they have a huge backlog in providing industry and citizens with the blessings of consumer goods. Hard to deny its citizens an improved living standard now!
India will be the country with the biggest population within the next few years. And they also want a comparable living standard and that means energy. COP27 also had to balance the need for a developing world with global warming. … and that is perhaps where the weak text on fossil fuel came in. The final text spoke about ‘phasedown of unabated coal power’. That is neither here nor there. The coal lobby also promoted ‘low-emissions energy’. There is no definition on that. The curve ball at COP27 was the war in Ukraine and the Russian energy export to Western Europe. Europe is going to face a bleak winter and a slow-down of their economies. There will not be energy to power their countries unless something happens. There ar talks about re-starting coal-fired power plants in Europe. That will take us years back but maybe a better option that the world economies collapsing – which can happen! Let us finish on a better note (before we meet at COP28 in Dubai): the ozone layer is recovering due to the interventions by all countries, starting in the 1980s. The world can – if we want to

Fashion – my favourite There are a few trends worth mentioning – first of all the colour scheme. Purple or lilac. That thing. And it can be on anything really. Combine this with other bold colours and we have something that is a statement. Tassel and fringing are a great way of celebrating summer. The more the better. That is one thing that cannot be overdone. Is it only for party dresses? Oh no – select the right dress or skirt and there it is. Fashionable even in the office. Tassles can be combined with lace. It gives just that difference. Look at adding something retro next time Yellow is hot in summer – it dazzles the eyes and sets the tone. Yellow can be combined with so many other things (but not black – we are not wasps). Floral prints are great – it will suit anyone. But be careful – it has to match what else we are putting on.
A nice shawl can be fun, but beware of the colour settings. A jacket is ok, but then it has to be light colours. I recommend something simple: stick to the dress! Don’t plaster it with other things Stripes? Don’t do it. It is complicated. It can make you taller or shorter or just different. Stick to what will be a great look. Not a pole advert Enjoy summer!
December = holidays December is of course Christmas. However, there are a lot of other things going on in December. Zamenhof Day is celebrated on 15 December, the birthday of Esperanto creator L. L. Zamenhof. It is the most widely celebrated day in Esperanto culture.[3] On this day, Esperantists hold information sessions and cultural gatherings to promote literature in Esperanto. The history of celebrating Esperanto on Zamenhof’s birthday can be traced back to 17 December 1878, when at a birthday party for his 19th birthday he presented to his friends his Lingwe uniwersala, the first version of his international language. By 1887, this language had evolved into what is now recognized as Esperanto when he published the Unua Libro. What is Esperanto? Esperanto is the world’s most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. Created by Warsaw-based ophthalmologist L. L. Zamenhof in 1887, it was intended to be a universal second language for international communication, or “the international language” (la
lingvo internacia). Usage estimates are difficult, but two estimates put the number of people who know how to speak Esperanto at around 100,000
tions on other Frisian Islands.
Klozum is a holiday feast celebrated every 5 December on the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog. The name literally means “Uncle Claus”. Despite the name and date, the tradition is not directly related to Sinterklaas, which is also celebrated on 5 December in the Netherlands. Rather, it is related to similar tradi-
During the feast, the islanders disguise themselves as “klozums” and visit homes on the island. The disguises are often as prominent locals, national and international celebrities, and fantasy and fairy-tale characters. The klozums visit homes on the island in groups. Once inside, the klozums put on a performance, acting out various characters or situations, often satirizing important events or decisions that have taken place on the island in the past year. After the klozums have departed, the inhabitants must guess who had been hiding behind the disguises. Klozum culminates in a demasking at midnight, when all the kl ozums drop their masks and disguises to reveal who they really are. The demasking is followed by celebrations lasting into the night. The children on the island have their own Klozum feast on 3 and 4 December. The lytje klozums (“little klozums”) visit homes during the afternoon, shouting “Klozum, Klozum”, and put on an act or sing a song, earning them a reward of candy or cookies.

Next Time... Next time we see each other will be January 2023. We all deserve a break, I think. What will be happening in 2023? We hope we will have more high-school writers joining us. Please come forward. It can be rather inspiring to write something ‘serious’ that can go on the CV. The app needs to be developed. Alas, it is a matter of funding and that is hard to find. But we have not given up. The focus will still be edutainment and we expect to see more on the ‘ligher’ side of life. Fashion, tech, movies, music, trends and so on. ... and a conspiracy from time to time - if I can find a good one! Until next time - next year!
