Gap yer - that big topic that always will be coming up this time of the year. Let it be said: if gap year will only be a holiday, be careful: a year of holiday does not look good on the CV. On the other hand, a year of activity may just be the thing. We have also tried to list some organisations we know of. But again: research it all probably. It is YOUR money and time. Brexit is now in its final phases - we all hope! I am tired, but this is THE month. We have tried to get something substantive from NSFAS for you. There are things we all need to know I think. ... and then the movies and fun! Good read!

o gap year or not to gap year – that is a very good question – Just to paraphrase the bard. here are so many questions arising when the topic of gap year comes up. Is it safe? Where to go? Will I be all alone? What if …?
ll of this is a frightening path. Especially if this would be first time outside South Africa. It does not make it easier if it is say in a non-English speaking country.
W
e have put some pro’s and con’s together. These are not the only things, but at least the most pertinent one’s. We have also spoken to people who have taken a gap year and of course the major organiser of gap years.
L
et there be a warning in all this: gap year ought not to be a year of holiday. As in ‘do nothing at all’. If that is the case, you might find yourselves at a disadvantage. What is your CV saying about a blank spot of 12 month?
A R
gap year can be so enhancing and provide so much, but there is also a flip-side.

Who has done gap year?
We spoke to Ntsiki who took a gap year and went to the US as a camp counselor for three months. Why a gap year? Ntsiki I felt that I was not ready for starting out on an education and I wanted to try something else. What did the organisation do for you? Ntsiki: They fully understood that I had never been overseas before, actually never outside South Africa. They helped and assisted every step of the way. All my stupid questions were taken serious and answered. Things like, will they laugh at me in Washington? Can they see I am from Africa, those silly things really. But also serious stuff. It calmed me down and ensured I had a wonderful trip. What did you learn as camp counselor? Ntsiki: More than I had ever thought. You know, if you have siblings you might know these things, but I don’t. Suddenly having to look after a set of primary school kids 24/7 was a shock and an experience. It gave me so much. Those were nice and impossible, laughing and crying, missing mom and dad and hugging me. I loved it. They were so cute all of them. But I also felt that I had to grow up fast. It was not me anymore. It
Well, Ntsiki did
was a job for which I got a pay. So I had to do it properly. I did understand that I was not the child there. I was the grown-up. Worth recommending? Ntsiki: Yes indeed. But only to youngsters who are just a bit courageous. Never having been outside of South Africa and then waving goodbye to mom and dad and off on the 747 to Washington, finding the suitcase, getting on a bus to somewhere, finding the Greyhound, people expecting you to know all these things, buying my first MacDonals’s in the US – a real one – it was fun and challenging and so new to me. If I had got home sick in the middle of it, well, I couldn’t, could I? Other comments? Ntsiki: I loved every second of it. But it was not inexpensive, so there is a catch to it. Can everybody afford it? I don’t know, but it is worth working for, say, three months to be able to go there for three months. I also feel that the organisation to choose is important. Here my mom and dad were involved every step of the way and I had full confidence in this.

anding over money to someone overseas you have never seen without checking it out is not an idea. It is not saying that the overseas one’s are dodgy. If you google it, you can get a list of some 200 companies doing gap years just like that. But how reliable are they? Website is one thing but ‌

he better advise seems to be to determine what YOU would like to do and to get out of a gap year.
s it short-term stuff? Is it a year away overseas? We have tried to list some organisations. Be aware: we are not recommending any one over another. We are not certifying anything. It is YOU who must do a bit of homework as well.
November month - Wiki There are a few things going on in November. It is not just warmi Culture Day (Bunka no Hi) is a national holiday held annually in Japan on November 3 for the purpose of promoting culture, the arts, and academic endeavor. Festivities typically include art exhibitions, parades, and award ceremonies for distinguished artists and scholars. For example, Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture holds the annual Feudal Lord’s Parade to exhibit Edo period clothing and costumes. It is common for universities to present new research and projects on Culture Day. Primary and secondary schools often have a “culture festival on or near this day. Since 1936, the award ceremony for the prestigious Order of Culture has been held on this day. Given by the Emperor himself to those who have significantly advanced science, the arts or culture, it is one of the highest honours bestowed by the Imperial Family. The prize is not restricted to Japanese citizens, and for instance was awarded to the Apollo 11 astronauts upon their successful return from the moon, as well as literary scholar Donald Keene.
ing up for exams - that dreadful word. Read and enjoy a break! Guy Fawkes Remember, remember, the fifth of November… Was Guy fawkes a villain really? Sure, there was a plot to blow up the parliament at its opening on 5 November 1605. Sure Guy Fawkes was guarding the gun-powder – all 2,5 tons of it. But ?? King James (the one with the Bible) was a Protestant. He tried to ease the laws against Catholics but politically he had the public opinion against him on that account. In 1604 he ordered all Catholic priests to leave the country. This got the English Catholics into a low-key rebellion. The conspirators’ principal aim was to kill King James, but the opening of parliament would also mean all bishops, most nobility, and both houses (Lords and Commons) would have been there – all would succumb to the bomb. The blast would have flattened everything in a huge radius. In essence: a total decapitation of the UK government. Those were not amateurs. Guy Fawkes was a soldier with years of service. And they all believed in changing the laws aimed at Catholics, claiming that Catholics were also loyal citizens. Now judge!
Enjoyed the article about Namibia last month? Well, here is more: What about studying in Namibia? We gave you all the links to the universities in Namibia last. The link to NAMCOL – the Open Learning College of Namibia is here. We have been in contact with Intergate Africa .We believe this is one of the foremost organisations in assisting in getting visas, permits, documents and assistance throughout the entire process. What they have said is: “Below is the pricing and outline Study Permit - Basic and Tertiary Education The Ministry of Home Affairs (Namibia) only accepts study permit applications between December and February of every year. No applications are processed outside of these months. We can only assist you with getting a study permit if you have been accepted into a Namibian educational institution. We will project manage the entire application from South Africa but the actual application is submitted in Namibia by one of the Agents/lawyers we have partnered with in Namibia. An acceptance letter or provisional acceptance will be required for the application. The application must be submitted in December/January as the Home Affairs is closing the study permit section at the end of February 20xxx. No more applica-
tions are processed outside of these Months. Cost: Intergate Service Fee for Tertiary Study Permit: R10,550.00 per applicant (including VAT and government fees” In essence: There are organisations that can assist, but be aware: there are costs associated as well. There are a few general requirements as well (from the Intergate website): • It is not allowed for you to enter Namibia on a tourist visa in the hope of then applying for a Namibia study permit and visa. • In addition, visas and permits are not interchangeable so even if you are already in Namibia on a visa or permit (other than a permanent residency permit) you would still need to make an application for a Namibia study permit and visa • The holder of a Namibia study permit and visa may not enter into any employment unless there is condition on the Namibia study permit and visa which relates to such employment. Application requirements • Letter of admission from the learning institution. • Certified copies of the applicants passport. • if for research purposes a letter from the Institution where she/he is currently studying. • The academic record of the applicant. Additional information: go to the official Namibian website: The website is here

International Year o It is the Year of the Periodic Table. Why is it significant? It is significant because the classification of the basic elements allows us to predict the nature of chemicals surrounding us. Sort of: what goes where and can react with what. And it also predicts new elements and their properties. There is also a lot of history in this of course. Lavoisier had a go at it in 1789. He started out with 33 elements, but the rationale was to try to fit what existed into a classification. Doebereiner observed (in 1829) that by looking at the chemical properties, a pattern would emerge. His attempt got into triads – groups of three. Alexandre-Émile Béguyer de Chancourtois was slowly getting there. In 1862 he published his helix where the pattern of the current periodic table starts to emerge. By looking down the helix it is possible to see the groups forming.
of the Periodic Table But there was still a way to go. Meyer was getting there when in 1864 he published his take on the periodic table. The new thing here was that he predicted that there had to be numerous elements not yet discovered. Based on his predictions of properties it was possible to go find the ‘missing’ elements, Mendeleev published his periodic table in 1869 and is widely credited as the ‘father’ of the periodic table. However, it is really the classic truth: new discoveries are done by people standing on the shoulders of the previous giants. It is from this period and throughout that the periodic table has been refined and adjusted. Atomic weight and charge and so on all leads into physics at the atomic level. That we can read about in the textbooks. Elements found in nature stops with atomic weight 94. The rest are by and large created by smashing atoms together in a reactor (or at CERN) and see what comes out of it. Whether these elements will have any relevance is still to be seen.
Rising Sea Levels What now SA? Rising sea levels is a global occurrence and is by and large triggered by human activity. We hear a lot about the impact in low-laying areas (e.g. Asia), but what about us in South Africa? It is a complex issue. The oceans have absorbed more than 90 percent of the heat from the greenhouse gases and that is the major part of the problem. In fact, 2018 set a new record for ocean heating. Rising sea levels is one of the effect of climate change. Because of this, when sea levels rise rapidly, a small increase can result in devastating effects on coastal habitats farther inland. Moreover, it can cause destructive erosion, wetland flooding, aquifer and agricultural soil contamination with salt, and lost habitat for fish, birds, and plants. Research has also found that higher sea levels are coinciding with hazardous hurricanes and typhoons that move more slowly and drop more rain, contributing to more powerful storm surges that can strip away everything in their path. The question now becomes critical: what can South Africa do about this? Although only the areas around Cape Town are in immediate danger, we cannot ignore the impact.
There are mainly three types of solutions to mitigate the challenges brought by the rising of sea levels. The most widely-discussed are coping solutions. These are focused on ‘protecting’ the areas. For instance, some coastal cities install drainage systems and building up seawalls. In other instances, island populations are moving. In Boston developers are planning ahead. Skanska Commercial Development constructed an elliptical office tower designed to withstand fierce wind storms. The building’s electrical infrastructure is located 40 feet above the 100-year floodplain. It also has a 40,000-gallon water reclamation tank, and a raised ground floor. Cape Town in particular is managing its present and future sea level rise. Over a period of almost 30 years, the rate of residential and commercial developments in Cape Town has doubled. However, as much as possible, it has taken into account the nearness of the oceans.
Rising Sea Levels On the other hand, these ‘coping’ solutions do not address the root cause of global warming. Additionally, these strategies raise concerns regarding the risk associated with infrastructure failure in the future and the maintenance costs once infrastructure is established. For this reason, other countries are focused on the second type of solution, reducing future greenhouse gas emissions. This is done by switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy production. Renewables include solar energy, wind energy, and geothermal energy sources. Additionally, there is implementation of carbon taxes to raise the cost of burning carbon. Carbon emissions trading rewards businesses that adhere to carbon caps. The third solution is the most critical, but less widely discussed. Existing greenhouse gases must be removed from the atmosphere. Carbon sequestration captures and stores CO2 underground. To meet the Paris Agreement goal, 10 billion tons a year must be removed by 2050 and 100 billion tons by 2100. In fact, one of the easiest solutions is to plant trees and other vegetation to halt deforestation. This is because currently the world’s 3 trillion trees store 400 gigatons of carbon. Is it safe to say that there may be a need to go visit some of these coastal cities and its heritage sites before the sea covers it all?

hat is it with this Guy Fawkes mask? (from Wiki)
he Guy Fawkes mask is a stylised depiction of Guy Fawkes, the bestknown member of the Gunpowder Plot.
he mask, designed by illustrator David Lloyd, came to represent broader protest after it was used as a major plot element in V for Vendetta, from 1982, and its 2005 film .
A
fter appearing in Web forums, the mask became a well-known symbol for the online hacktivist group Anonymous, used in Project Chanology, the Occupy movement, Anonymous for the Voiceless, and other anti-government and anti-establishment protests around the world. Notable events: • On 23 May 2009: protest over the issue of British MPs’ expenses • 2011: The Occupy movement, the mask appeared internationally as a symbol of popular rebellion. • In January 2012, Guy Fawkes masks were used by protesters against Poland’s signing of ACTA.
T
he masks were used by anti-government protesters in Thailand in 2012, and by protesters in Turkey in 2013. They were also used in protests in Brazil and Egypt in 2013
T
he mask has been worn to protest anti-mask laws, such as that imposed in early October 2019 during the 2019 Hong Kong protests.
Who is Greta Thunberg? Who is Greta Thunberg ? (wiki)
We sometimes think that as high-school students we cannot have any impact on society. Not so! Greta is a glaring example of what we can do. And remember – we are many! Greta Thunberg FRSGS (born 3 January 2003) is a Swedish teenage environmental activist on climate change whose campaigning has gained international recognition. Thunberg first became known for her activism in August 2018 when, at age 15, she began spending her school days outside the Swedish parliament to call for stronger action on global warming by holding up a sign saying (in Swedish) “School strike for climate. Soon, other students engaged in similar protests in their own communities. Together, they organised a school climate strike movement under the name Fridays for Future. After Thunberg addressed the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, student strikes took place every week somewhere in the world. In 2019, there were at least two coordinated multi-city protests involving over one million students each.
Thunberg is known for her blunt, straightforward speaking manner, both in public and to political leaders and assemblies, in which she urges immediate action to address what she describes as the climate crisis. At home, Thunberg convinced her parents to adopt several lifestyle choices to reduce their own carbon footprint, including giving up air travel and not eating meat. Her sudden rise to world fame has made her a leader and a target. In May 2019, Thunberg was featured on the cover of Time magazine, which named her a “next generation leader” and noted that many see her as a role model. Thunberg and the school strike movement were also featured in a 30-minute Vice documentary titled Make the World Greta Again. Some media have described her impact on the world stage as the “Greta Thunberg effect”. Thunberg has been the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including fellowship of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, has been named as one of the 100 most influential people of 2019 by Time magazine, and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In September 2019, she addressed the UN Climate Action Summit in New York.

Pacific islands
When we look at these paradise islands in the pacific, and we get all keen on visiting on holidays, well, yes. The blue ocean, the white sandy beaches, the palm trees and the soft breeze cooling us all. It is lovely -isn’t it just? But let us look at one of these: Marshall Islands. Highest point – 2 meters. A one meter rise in sea levels will take away 80% of the biggest atoll where 50% of the population live. Frequency of storms is increasing! And the more violent waves are eating into the sandy beaches and washing the island away. … and there is nowhere to go when a storm is hitting. There is no ‘higher ground’ anywhere. This is it. The underwater fresh water supply has been contaminated by sea water. It used to be a growing tourist attraction, but that is threatened as nobody really wants to get stuck on an island that is disappearing underneath you if a storm should hit.

BREXIT - latest ...and nearly last
Is this going to be the last word on Brexit? I have a hope …. But it will probably drag out into next year, and the year after and the year after that and …. So, where are we? It is nearly impossible to figure out, but: UK parliament voted the Benn Act. That one says that Boris the PM must provide a ‘deal’ acceptable to EU by 19 October and which the parliament can vote on. If not done, he must ask EU for an extension until 31 January 2020. They even gave him the text. The ‘deal’ he presented was 99% of what Ms. May had proposed and which parliament voted down three times. The difference being a bit softening up on the Irish Back-stop. According to EU, they are fine with it. If Boris the PM wants to be a big hero EU is OK. Not their problem. 19 October dawns. And everybody is in their seats,
waiting for the big vote to happen. And then… nothing. The vote is postponed as the parliament decides that it cannot be just a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on things that nobody has seen. That means that all the legislation for Brexit must have been passed in parliament before a final vote can be done. Boris had to send the letter to EU, but what letter? What Boris did was to make a photocopy of the parliamentary resolution where the text was specified that he had to send. Sao that got ‘faxed’ off to EU and no signature applied. However, it did get a follow-on letter (signed) by Boris explaining that the ‘fax’ was what parliament wanted him to say, but his personal view was that EU should not grant an extension. Does it defy the Benn act? Maybe not the letter but surely the spirit? So that is now going to court. The catch is that EU (all 27 members) must agree to the extension. If only one does not agree, UK is out next week – with no deal. Boris had wanted another vote for Tuesday 22 October. A ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote, but the speaker ruled that that was already settled (Saturday) and cannot now be introduced again. The precedence? A vote in 1604 settled this (yes, it’z true!) The first batch of legal text have been produced. 110 pages and more to come.
How to make a law Typically the UK government is announcing that a new bill is going to get intorduced. It is really the intention that is important here. In the meantime, the law office will have produced the text – in this example we talk 110 pages and more to come. This is called first reading of the bill – although it is actually not read Now comes the real work: second reading. This is where the bill is explained and debated. This can take a long time – if someone would like to have it to take a long time. It is concluded with a vote. Then it goes into committee work. There are different committees but in essence: this is where the bill is scrutinised and amendments and changes are made. But then it needs to go back to getting voted again. If everybody is happy, we have the third reading, followed by a vote. This is nearly it. It will then move to the House of Lords who have a similar process. The catch is: if the Lords propose changes, it must start all over again. And it all takes time!
If House of Lords also vote for the bill, it goes to the Queen for signature and then it is LAW!. So, let us look at Brexit. We have first reading. Second reading must be followed by a vote. Committees and readings and House of Lords and so on and all this before Thursday 31 October midnight? Time for a miracle. So, my guess is: Brexit is not right now. BUT that is subject to 27 member states saying OK to the extension. Which might not happen. There is a PhD sitting and waiting for someone here!
