Congratulations on taking part in this Model United Nations. This exercise will give you a full taste of the complexity of international relations - the intricacies of negotiating among diverse peoples and perspectives, the challenges of achieving consensus, the patience required to win progress. These skills will help you in whatever course you choose in life. I trust you have all heard the saying, “united we stand, divided we fall. That adage captures this moment in international affairs. No single country or group, no matter how powerful, can take on the major issues of the day alone. In an era when challenges spill over borders and have global reach, our future depends on how well we work together. Ban Ki Moon message to RomeMUN 2011

www.romemun.org Over the next five days you will hear from experts working to reduce poverty and increase food production. You will learn about what rural poverty looks like today and about the state of the world’s food security. You will learn about the role of young people in the United Nations and have the opportunity to participate in a simulation of the UN General Assembly Plenary and you will learn more about how you can make the future sustainable for yourselves, your families, and for all those who will come after you. I have no doubt that we will learn as much from you as you will learn from us. I would like to conclude by issuing a challenge to all of you who have travelled from near and far, who simply by the act of showing up here today, have proven that you are already committed to making the world a better place in which to live. Listen. Learn. Share your thoughts, your ideas, your aspirations. And then go out into the world and act. We are counting on you. We believe in you. Our planet’s future is in your very capable hands. Thank you. IFAD President Kanayo F. Nwanze Opening Speech at RomeMUN 2011
