CITY LIKE A DREAM
Trimester XIII-XV, 2012
Academic+Individual Thesis
Marco Polo says the randomness of cities - their absurd and deceitful realities - has an inner meaning, an inner rule, a perspective, a discourse, in the same way as dreams. Cities are desire and fear made concrete, but in deceitful, discourse and displaced ways. Every instant has more than the eye can see and more than the ear can hear. It's a setting or a view waiting to be explored. All of it is always experienced in relation to its surroundings. The sequences of events leading up to this is the memories of the past experiences. Every person has had long associations with some parts of his/her city which is soaked in his memories and meanings(dreams).

CRYSTAL POINT (STAR BAZAAR MALL)
NALA
The site is located at D. N. Nagar, Versova, Andheri (W), Mumbai. It is a very busy junction throughout the day. This junction being the intersection of the proposed monorail lines, is prone to get even more busy and to become a potential site for open spaces. The site consists of a dumping ground, a sewage water pump station and the Indian Oil Nagar residence which are proposed to be demolished for the Monorail Station.

Map of Zaveri Bazzar
The studio was based on a slice of contemporary urban landscape treating the ground as an intelligent adaptive terrain which constantly updates itself to the ever-changing densities of organizations, densities and infrastructures. PLAN : MUMBAI CITY
A series of mapping exercises were conducted to understand the intricacies of the existing ground. Based on the projected patterns of use in terms of enhanced connectivity, ecological awareness, consumer intelligence, economic and functional efficiency and evolving “bazaar”(market) typology, strategies were chartered to reconstruct the terrain. Zaveri(jewellery) bazaar initially a residential area is currently a compact space where various processes of storage, production and retail occur. The bazaar which w as primarily a jewelry market has now been flooded with other commodities like cloth, hardware, metal etc. as well.

BSSA / YEAR FOUR / TERRA FORMATIONS
Academic+Individual Terraformations
Using the site data, the idea was to study Zaveri Bazaar in a form of a 3-dimensional grid by considering a shop as a node. A shop would grow and aggregate into the warehouses, workshops, ofďŹ ces and further into the by lanes, streets and the main street. Hence, due to this aggregation, forming the current fabric of Zaveri Bazaar.

GROWTH AND FORM EXHIBITION
This project deals with layering, which is derived from the study of growth of Stalactites. The growth is observed in different climatic conditions resulting in different types of forms. Even the factors like wind and pressure are taken into consideration. After the study, the concept of layering is taken forward. There is an attempt to create a space and explore the concept of layering in the third dimension. This is a space where in, a person can walk through and experience layering in different ways. The heights also vary at different places within the space created allowing a person to feel the layers.

Space One was a team effort for the design entry of Fentress Global Competition, Future Workplace. The design entry focused on breaking the typical ofďŹ ce cubical environment. The design is a set of seamless loops, free of physical hierarchy. Handheld devices will allow an unprecedented mobility, and ease of functionality for the employee. A sustainable approach to the design will help make the workplace costeffective, while the open form will make it space, and production-effective. Program Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) ofďŹ ce Site Eastern waterfront, Mumbai, India It is adjacent to an upcoming ferry terminal. The Eastern waterfront of Mumbai today houses mostly warehouses for the port, and is, as such a defunct part of the city. The land surrounding the structure is an open-to-public park, which al lows the employees to spill out their activities in the midst of nature as well as provides a much needed recreational open space for the citizens of the city.

This render produced by me, talks about the overall experience of employees with their workplace. The workplace of the future will use technologies that will optimise the employees’ output and make the organization space effective at the same time. Increasing portability and processing power will allow personal tablets and cell phones to be able to perform all the varied tasks required of a desktop computer today.

Cross sections of corrugated sheets interlocked for stability
The furniture was speciďŹ cally designed for the Kalaghoda festival in order to house the exhibits within it. The form is suggestive and leads people onto areas for viewing, sitting and daily interactions. The low undulating surface encourages people to move closer the exhibits and intermingle with each other. The street furniture is made of corrugated sheets, resulting in a structurally sound system of components.

Promenade
Marine drive is a long “C” shaped promenade along the Arabian Sea. This par cular land-water edge condi on is a very rigid edge. The change from land to water is very abrupt. The idea was to blur this edge by adding an intermediate layer that dilutes the sudden change from land to water.

A transparent tube was anchored on two edges of the promenade to allow people to move inside the insert. The rest of the tube would float on water and people inside would experience the feeling of being on water. Depending on the density of the people inside, the tube will expand or contract, which is retained in the final insert. The tube also acts as a wave breaker.
