Team WhichCraft Term I - Module III, 2013
Academic+Team FlinQ
Initial Brief To showcase the commercial benefits of the new technology at Wales Centre for Printing and Coating (WCPC) Swansea by designing and developing new applications/products/solutions using/showcasing their printed electronic technologies.
Need for New Design To the majority, the smartphone is an integral part of us. It has manifested itself into many aspects of our lives; from daily activities, through to the ways in which we communicate with friends and loved ones. We at team WhichCraft can relate with this, as do many of our family, friends and collegues. So, fundamentally, there is a need for a new design that will help disconnect users from having to constantly glare at their smart phones, but at the same time, allowing the desired level of connectivity, engagement and security in knowing; that your phone is still always within reach.
Refined Brief To design a wearable device using printed electronics to connect to a portable communication device. The new device must be able to relay notifications from the connected device back to the user, without the user having to reach into their bag, pocket etc. It must be a premium quality device, which will have a simple user interface, and have an inventive twist to it. It will have either a flexible or foldable display, and will take a practical and innovative approach to design.
What is FlinQ? Flinq is a device that we like to call:
“Socially Perceptible” It removes the awkwardness of checking your phone in a social situation, only to find out John liked the picture of your dog on Facebook. Is it an important call or message? FlinQ will let you know.
Induction Charging
Just curl Flin Q up and pop it on the ‘node’ to charge it. It’s as simple as that.
Smart Clasp Magnetically attaches in most comfortable position. Fabric tag for easy attachment and removal
‘FlinQ’ is branched from three words:
Flexible // Link // Think As well as being physically flexible, it’s flexible with you. You control how the device reacts when connected to your phone or tablet – That’s the link. It’s a clever thinker too, as it will dodge annoying calls, texts and e-mails automatically. Yes, even if John texts you about the dog.
Printed Electroluminescent ‘Veins’ Cleverly relays information to the user. Has user customizable notification patterns
Digital EL Clock Display For those times where you just want to check the time. Squeeze the sides to have a peek
Major Project - The Next Generation Bike Rack Term II - 2014
Academic+Individual Bike Shelter
Introduction The type 9 Bike Rack is one of Odoni-Elwell's bestselling products. It is also one of their oldest products. The type 9 is showing its age in terms of its dated aesthetics. The product itself and the auxiliary items such as shelters and provision for security and inclusivity have become crude in appearance and therefore there is a need for a fresh take on the best selling product.
The Brief To design a suite of products based around the dated Type 9 Bike Rack. The solution is to design a shelter/canopy to house the racking system and to modify the locking hoop allowing greater inclusivity and cost effective manufacture. The final design is galvanized mild steel construction with optional polyester powder coating and polycarbonate roof or red cedar wood cladding with a green roof.
1 – 45mm x 5mm galvanized flat steel section bolted to the ground to tie the individual bike spaces. 2 – 5mm thick laser cut galvanized solid steel plate welded to the main trough and the flat steel section at the bottom. 3 – Main trough. 4 – Locking Hoop – 5mm thick laser cut galvanized solid steel plate welded onto the main trough. 5 – Longer and extended customized form of the main trough extended to support the roofing. 6 – Polycarbonate sheet for roofing or optional red cedar wood cladding with green roof. 7 – 4(45mm x 5mm) galvanized flat steel section bolted to the troughs to hold the roofing and tie each trough together.
Aston Martin - TEAM 007.5 Term I - Module II, 2013
Academic+Individual Gaming Controller
Aston Martin - Team 007.5 The aim of this module was understand brand focus and brand appreciation. We were to select a brand as a group of 3-4. My group(Team 007.5) selected Aston Martin as a brand. We conducted focus groups and questionnaires to come up with adjectives(Sleek, Elegant, Movement and Hericonic - heritage+iconic) describing Aston Martin. This also gave us an idea of what is the image of the brand according to various ages of people.
Gaming Controller The next step was to select a product that the brand is not involved with. This part was an individual assignment. As per our group research we had created a persona as James Bond. I chose to design a gaming controller. It targeted the age group of 18-30(those who aspire to own an Aston Martin in the future). The design was to be sleek, elegant, should show some movement and should relate, in some way or the other, to the heritage of Aston Martin. Since we created persona as James Bond, my design also aimed at achieving the experience of a high-tech gadget.
