The first evidence of the usage of fish nets by humans date back to 8300 BC. These fish nets, referred to as the nets of Antrea, discovered in the Karelian town of Antrea, were made from the branches of the willow tree. Many other archaeological expeditions have revealed the usage of fish nets in the ancient world. For example, Native American Indians used Red tackle box woven from the fibres of spruce roots or wild grass and tied stones to the net to use it as a weight. The Nile River in Egypt was a rich source of fish and ancient Egyptians carried out fishing extensively in the waters of the Nile using fish nets. The mention of fish nets occurs in Egypt, Greek and Roman art and literature. In Egyptian tombs, paintings of early forms of fish nets are clearly depicted. Ancient Greek author Ovid mentions the use of fish nets in Greece in his writing, Halieutica. Roman mosaics also exhibit pictures of fish nets used by the ancient Roman civilization.

There are various types of fish nets available for personal or commercial uses. The landing nets are basic fish nets used for scooping up fish near the water surface. These nets are best for personal recreational fishing purposes and small scale commercial fishing by farmers. Cast nets are round fish nets, attached to weights on the edges. These nets sink when thrown into the water and after a while they are hauled back with the fish trapped within. These fish nets are used for larger catches than the landing nets and are often used to catch bait fish for deep sea fishing purposes.
