When he was off duty, Roscoe enjoyed being lazy, eating cheese and sleeping inside o n his oversize dog bed.
Bu t Roscoe, a 3-year-old German shepherd, had a job. And for it, he gave his life.
He was nationally certified for his abilities to track and apprehend people and to find narcotics. He was so good those things that, earlier this week, he was r ecognized as the Anderson County Sheriff's Office's canine officer of the month. Rosc oe, a police dog with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office in South Caroli na, was wounded in the line of duty Tuesday night and died Wednesday.
Less than three days after receiving that recognition, Roscoe was mortally wounded in a shooting that involved deputies, a man and a teenage girl.
Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride said Tuesday night that two people were shot after deputies were “ambushed” from a hill near the Lowe’s on Clemson Boulevard in Anderson. They had been "driving erratically" on Clemson Boulevard, then smashed into a taxi before jumping out of their car and running up the hill, McBride said.
Roscoe's job was to find them, and he did.
The dog was wounded by friendly fire during a shooting that involved the people on the hill and Anderson County Sheriff's Office deputies. It is with heavy hearts that we announce one of our beloved K9s has passed away," the agency wrote. "K9 Roscoe was shot last n ight while tracking fleeing suspects. ... End Of Watch 8-12-2 020."
