Costello for Communicaitons - Manifesto

Page 1

MEET RONAN Hi, my name is Ronan and I’m a fourth year law student. Originally from Carlow, I’ve come to think of Dublin as a second home. In my four years in Trinity I’ve been heavily involved with the SU and student societies. The common thread through all these activities was a passion for communications and raising awareness for the group I was working with. From my time as Deputy Editor and Opinion Editor of the old University Record, to my current stint as News Editor of The University Times, I’ve seen what a college newspaper should be and what students expect of it. I have ideas for the direction it could take next year and an editorial team lined up and ready to go, with proven experience and passion for the job. I’ve also worked as a sports writer for my local newspaper, The Nationalist. I travelled around the county covering sports matches and interviewing local sports stars for our centrefold features. Last year I was Public Relations Officer for the DU Law Soc and was tasked with publicising all Law Soc events by designing posters and flyers as well as coordinating Facebook promotion. I put together the Law Shock magazine, which went out to all incoming Freshers for the first time in the Law Soc’s history. This helped us to almost double our membership. This year I’m the Law Soc’s debate convenor. I have promotions and marketing experience as well, thanks to my job as Apple Campus Representative. So if you don’t know me personally you might know me as “the Apple guy” with the stand in the Arts Block and Hamilton.

WHY VOTE COSTELLO FOR COMMUNICATIONS? Vote Costello for the best editorial team in college journalism

Vote Costello to professionalise the Deal of the Week

This year The University Times has broken stories on the national stage. Under my editorship of our News section, we have uncovered academic dissatisfaction with restructuring, dodgy government appointments to the College Board and how students got screwed in the financing of the Student Centre. Next year we’ll continue to work on your behalf to uncover injustices and to keep you informed about developments that affect you directly.

The Deal of the Week is not just about cheap lunches - we’re all broke students, and having an inexpensive, high quality lunch option every day will help us make ends meet. At the moment, the Deal of the Week is organised on the hoof, with several different people organising it. I want to take charge of the Deal of the Week, expanding it and squeezing every last bit of value out of the SU’s Deal of the Week partners.

Vote Costello for SU GMB “Town Hall” Meetings The SU will hold public meetings in the GMB chamber, open to all students. At the meetings, issues that impact on students will be discussed by high-profile guest and student speakers. Comments and questions will be taken from the floor in the spirit of an open discussion. Every candidate for Communications Officer says that they want to bring the SU closer to students, yet most of them fail to do this when they get elected. Students feel divorced from the decision-making process of the SU. I want to involve ordinary students in the discussion, and I think an SU Town Hall meeting is the way to do it.

Vote Costello for help kick-starting your career Right now students are justifiably anxious about their prospects after college with a majority of students thinking that the only option open to them after graduation is emigration. Under my watch the SU will have a careers section in every e-mail as well as regular updates of new graduate opportunities on Facebook. The University Times will have an Appointments page, with new graduate opportunities featured as well as details of any summer or other internship schemes that may be of interest to students.

VOTE COSTELLO IF YOU WANT: * A better University Times * SU Town Hall meetings * A better Deal of the Week * A job when you finish college

The University Times

I view The University Times as a service provided by the SU to students rather than a propaganda tool. Having an editorially independent, trustworthy news source keeps students informed about the issues that affect us. It’s no coincidence that The University Times’s success came when it established its editorial independence. Free from SU influence, The University Times has become the college’s newspaper of record and a voice that students trust. I will maintain this independence.

The University Times magazine: Incorporating UTculture.

News that matters to you:

Leathanch Gaeilge sa University Times Magazine

This year The University Times has broken stories that have been picked up by the national media. Our coverage of the issues that effect students has been unrivalled. As News Editor, I have overseen the work of dedicated and enthusiastic students who have held College, the government and the SU to account. As Editor I will continue to unearth the stories that matter to you.

UTculture has been a great addition to the newspaper. Next year I want to take it a step further by creating The University Times Magazine. This will incorporate a culture section, but also include extended features on a wide variety of topics, from lifestyle issues to political analysis. The centrefold will feature a selection of the best photos from Trinity’s most talented photographers.

Le cúpla bhliain anuas ní raibh morán Gaeilge sa pháipear. Mar Eagarthoir, bheinn ag iarraidh leathanch iomlán sa University Times Magazine a thabhairt don chomhluadar Gailge sa Tríonoide. Bheidh deis ann do scríbhneoiri Gaeilge a thuairimi a thabhairt ar saol an dalta i gcolaiste na Tríonoide.

Currently the SU does most of its communicating through Facebook updates and the weekly e-mail. Written material like e-mails is good, but video is better. If I’m elected the video output of the SU will increase hugely. We’ll have professional standard videos of Council, videos of your Sabbatical Officers, and interviews with politicians and high profile figures. Good videos will spread, and so too will our message.
