Mother Goose is on the loose. Little Bo-Beep has lost her sheep. Barnaby Barnacle is racking the rent and if someone doesn’t do something quickly, the Town of Storyville will surely be ruined and there’ll be none of the romance, the laughter and the seasonal fun for all the family that we all associate year by year with the Bath Drama panto at the Rondo.

DNA & Braver, Stronger, Smarter By Dennis Kelly / Devised Wed 20 Jan • 7.30 • Full £5 Community Theatre - Student City of Bristol Performing Arts Department presents and explosive double bill of Dennis Kelly’s contemporary classic DNA and a new piece of writing Braver, Stronger, Smarter. DNA is about a group of teenagers who have done something bad. Very bad. Panic, cover ups and waffles follow. Lyn Gardner from the Guardian called Dennis Kelly’s play, “a short, sharp shocker… a jet black comedy.” Braver, Stronger, Smarter is a new piece of work devised using transcripts of real life conversations, memories and favourite songs and its title is inspired by the work of AA Milne. The Performing Arts Department of City of Bristol College produces two public performances per year for both years of their BTEC Performing Arts course. This is the first of the academic year and it is directed and produced by Roughhouse Theatre and Rondo Theatre Associate Director Shane Morgan.

Waiting for Guffman Fri 29 Jan • 8pm • Full £8 Concs £5 • Film Join us for a special fundraising screening of this classic comedy, which takes a hugely tongue-in-cheek and yet affectionate swipe at the world of *ahem* small-scale, small-town theatre... The film will be introduced by Bath’s own comedy superstar, Jon Monie. When the town of Blaine, Mo., approaches its sesquicentennial, there’s only one way to celebrate: with a musical revue called “Red, White and Blaine.” Hoping the show will be his ticket back to Broadway, impresario Corky St. Clair (Christopher Guest) rounds up a cast of enthusiastic but untalented locals (Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Catherine O’Hara) to perform his masterwork. But, when Corky reveals that theatre agent Mort Guffman will attend the opening, things really kick into high gear.

MHA Presents

Sean McLoughlin: Whatever It Takes Sat 30 Jan • 8pm • Full £14 Concs £12 • Stand-Up Comedy After finally clawing his career out of the toilet and towards the stars, Sean McLoughlin should be at his happiest, right? Unfortunately, this long-awaited improvement in career has coincided with an astonishing collapse in his personal life (floods, divorce, cats etc.). Sean has beaten the system and yet finds himself at the mercy of it. From these two conflicting circumstances a question has emerged: can a man rise AND fall at the same time? The bastards may be pulling him apart but Sean McLoughlin is back with his sharpest and most hilarious stand-up yet. Hold onto your hats, this one could be spectacular. Following his hit debut, Backbone (named one of the top 5 free shows of 2013 Fringe by The List), Sean’s second show I Will Prevail was met with tremendous underground success at the Edinburgh Festival. Playing to packed houses and gaining critical acclaim, culminating in a nomination by fellow comedians for the ‘Best Performer’ Barry Award, and the show has since been performed throughout London and across the UK. Another calamitous year has led to another hour of blisteringly funny stand-up from Sean, who is heading out on tour fresh from supporting Katherine Ryan and Doc Brown on their national tours, and making a breakthrough appearance on Russell Howard’s Stand-Up Central.

“The best comedian you haven’t heard of yet” - Mark Watson “What a genuinely fresh and powerful voice… it is wonderful” Scotsman

Knives in Hens By David Harrower Wed 17 – Sat 20 Feb • 8pm • Full £10 Concs £8pm • Community Theatre Best known for his play Blackbird, this is David Harrower’s astonishing debut. Set in a God-fearing, pre-industrial rural community, a young woman comes to terms with old grudges and factions, an unexpected betrayal and a growing awareness of her place in the world. It’s about how a young peasant woman meets a miller who offers her the opportunity to awaken and learn. It’s about giving one woman the power of the written word, a power that we take for granted but which, once discovered, endowed humans with the ability to learn, to remember, to teach and to endure.

Lady Connie and the Suffragettes By Ros Connelly Fri 26 Feb • 8pm • Full £14 Concs £12 • Professional Theatre This new play explores Lady Constance Lytton’s unique role in the Suffragette Movement, her privileged background and her development into one of the suffragettes’ heroic icons. The nuances and drama of a life torn between the private and the public, love and duty, family and cause are drawn from Constance Lytton’s own writings in her letters, diaries and her book Prisons and Prisoners. Constance Lytton struggles with the frustrations and constrictions of life as “an upper-class, financially dependent, useless, congenitally shy spinster” and the fluctuations of an achingly sad love affair. Determined to expose the double standards and barbaric treatment committed against the suffragettes, she put herself at immense personal risk with devastating consequences.

Sadly, 1991 saw the surprise departure of the band’s lead singer… Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records. A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston to record his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network. Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as legendary. Dave Sharp has embraced mainstream popular culture whilst at the same time remaining one step away from its grasp – and he likes it that way! Dave Sharp writes it, sings it and lives it.

In this glorified kite they flew from Newfoundland through dense fog, sleet, snow and hail – sometimes upside down – to Ireland and worldwide celebrity. What made them do it? Why have they been forgotten? And how on earth can a couple of actors tell it all with just cardboard, two chairs and some left-over props? So strap yourself in and cry “Chocks away!” for a night of thrills, spills and uproarious comedy.

Otway And Barrett: The Final Straw Tour 2016 Sat 9 Apr • 8pm • Full £14 Concs £12 • Comedy/Music This may be the last Otway and Barrett tour – according to Willy. Otway remains unconvinced. The first place Otway and Barrett did not work together was their first gig - John was heckled off stage during his solo number and both Willy and the audience decided that it would be better if they did not do the rest of the show as a duo. After an appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test - during which John landed on his testicles whilst leaping astride Willy’s amplifier - an amused punk audience bought enough copies of the single “Really Free” to give them their first Hit. When times got tough they did re-unite for short periods of time, but any sustained partnership was usually curtailed by unreasonable behaviour by one of the parties. Barrett writing a song called “Give It Headbutts” which required him to bang John’s head against the microphone in time to the music and Otway recording a solo album called “All Balls and no Willy” are typical examples of this. In the past few years Otway and Barrett have reunited for a few short tours, if only to prove that nothing much has changed. Both John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett remain enigmas to the vast majority of the British public, but for those who know they are amongst the top ten of favourite artists to see live. The show is a wonderful eclectic mix of bizarre humour, superb visual effects, fine guitar playing and the best use of a Theremin anywhere.
