Welcome to The RONDO – Spring 2015
Fresh, frantic, fruity and fun! Those are the key words for our magnificent Spring season here at The Rondo. We’ve got a dazzling mixture of theatre, comedy, music and magic, featuring many companies and performers new to us, and a few old friends with new things to say for good measure. We’ve got brilliant new comedy from Andrew Lawrence, Jasper Cromwell Jones, Tom Allen and Carly Smallman. There’s amazing music from The Croutons and Bath Chamber Opera. There are some fantastic spoken word shows from Sophia Walker and from The Devil’s Violin, who combine music and storytelling into one of the most atmospheric shows you’ll ever see. There’s also magic, from lovers of Victoriana Morgan & West, and master mentalist Luke Jermay. And, of course, there’s theatre. Miracle Theatre return with their latest hilarious offering, Second Face follow last Halloween’s Ghost Hunt with a contemporary look at The Alchemist, a stunning Macbeth visits fresh from a London run, we meet the Real Maggie Thatcher and take a look inside Victorian... er... facilities with Royal Flush. All this, and some fantastic productions from the cream of local community theatre. Oh yes – there’s the return of the Bath Comedy Festival, too, with some fantastic acts – but don’t take our word for it, have a look! Ian McGlynn, Theatre Director

Last year we experienced the highs and lows of Joe Bor’s buffoonish creation as he recounted his epic mountaineering quest to an audience who were suspended in disbelief…that such a doofus could ever be allowed to do something that dangerous. The consequences were, inevitably, disastrous. But that won’t stop the well-bred bravura of this chap taking hold of him again. When Jasper learns that daddy is in the Outback, off he pops to Australia. However, his mission becomes more about survival than retrieval, and he’s not helped by his laddish cousin Jimmy and his obsessive fan Gemma. Luckily Bear Grylls proves to be much more helpful.

Women on Top and A Viking in Novgorod By Two Comedy-Operas by Malcolm Hill Wed 11 Feb • 7.30pm • Full £12 Concs £7 • Music Women on Top – in ancient Athens, the women take over the government from the men, and pass new laws establishing common ownership and sexual equality. A Viking in Novgorod – a tale of medieval shamans and shapeshifting that reveals how the Vikings got their horns. Altogether, an evening that will live up to Dr Johnson’s definition of opera as ‘exotic and irrational entertainment’.

PLAYING UP
Death and the Maiden By Ariel Dorfman Wed 18 – Sat 21 Feb • 7:30pm • Full £10 Concs £8 Community Theatre This play was famously filmed with Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley and is one of the most thought provoking pieces of theatre ever to be written on the themes of political disappearances, forgiveness and revenge. In an age when people are still regularly snatched off foreign streets, sometimes to reappear broken and sometimes to disappear for ever, this is a play that generates discussion long after it is over. This is a dark political thriller that everyone should see.
