Black Face Never Looked So Good
Orson Welles’s Othello Back in the day (pre-90’s) when black people didn’t exist so white folk had to black face up to play black people such as Othello. ! For some reason this was the only film of Othello in the Library and I am too uncomfortable with white actors thinking boot polish = being a black person to watch this. Luckily the Library got the Lawrence Fishburne Version of Othello.
•
Shows the importance of using a black actor for a black role
•
Feels deeper and truer in Othello's conflicting emotions and issues over his race and self worth
•
I can relate to Othello's character better than most other Shakespearian characters which is both a advantage and a hindrance when creating work
