Editor’s report CONTRIBUTORS FOR NEXT ISSUE WANTED (Articles and Photos) Work on the third and last issue for the year has already started. We are looking for members to contribute either articles or photos (hopefully both). It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a member, a great way to meet new people and share your passion for all things Porsche, is to write at least one article for the magazine. Welcome to the second issue of Porsche West for 2018. The last four months have seen a number of very enjoyable and sold out social events and drives, as well as three more rounds of our fiercely contested Sports Series.
It doesn’t have to be a long article. And it certainly doesn’t need to be a Pulitzer winning one either. Feel free to get in touch if you need help with ideas, finetuning or proofreading. I’m here to assist.
Remember, the magazine is our way to share these experiences with all our members. For those who attended any of these events, it is a nice souvenir of the day. For those who couldn’t, hopefully it is a way to stay in touch with all of the club’s activities and maybe serve as an enticement to participate in the future.
The reality is that writing an article is a lot easier than you think. The secret is to just start writing and to let your personality, interest and passion dictate your article. It might take a few go’s. But you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Just try it!
CONTRIBUTORS & ADVERTISERS On behalf of all Club members, I would like to thank all our contributors (articles and photos) and advertisers for this issue. Without your articles and photos, the magazine would not be what it is today… a magazine many car clubs in Australia can only dream of! And without our advertisers, we wouldn’t be able to produce a high-quality magazine three times a year. Thank you for your support of the Club and the Magazine. And remember, as an advertiser you are welcome to write an article about your business. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS WITH YOUR BUSINESS Enjoy the read. I know you will.
Daniel (and Jackie) Eigenmann – Magazine Editor
And, let me tell you, the satisfaction (and pride) of seeing your very own article and photos published in a high-quality magazine is absolutely priceless!
Treasurer’s report
G’Hi everyone, and happy New Financial Year to you all. Thought I’d throw in a bit of accounting style humour…..Didn’t go down well at home either. On a more positive note, the Club is financially tracking along very well towards fiscal responsibility. Some of last year’s key areas of expense to the club have been looked at by the committee, with a view to either reducing that for this year, or making sure more members benefit from that outlay. Plans are now well underway for the Club’s Christmas Party, and Concours d’Elegance, both of which are not only the social highlights of the year for the Club, but also the most expensive events for the Club. This year, we are trying a slightly different format for the Christmas Party, which I am sure you will all enjoy. All will be revealed in the coming months. The bank balances are at $73,551.24 at the time of writing this, which is in line with where we were last year. There are still several advertising in Magazine invoices that have not been paid, but I expect these to be cleared up in the coming month. 4
PORSCHE WEST
In the next issue of the magazine, I will provide you all with a clear understanding of where your membership dollars are spent. I will wait until that issue to get a clearer picture for this calendar year. If any of you are making a deposit into the Club’s bank account, for any reason, be it payment for an event, membership dues, or even an advertising invoice, could you please include your surname? This is at least a starting point to helping me reconcile the bank account. On a personal note, I’d like to thank all those members from both our Club, the Porsche Club of Victoria, and the Porsche Club of Queensland, who contacted me directly to let me know how pleased they were with the 4-Cam article I wrote in the last issue. It makes the long hours of research a little more worthwhile to know that the articles do get read, and appreciated. So on that note, if you read an article you enjoy, from any other member, let them know. Few of us are writers for a living, so it means a lot.
If you have any ideas for an article that you’d like to put together, other than the social events that are regularly covered, but not sure how to go about it, drop me a line, and I’ll be happy to assist getting you under way. Daniel, our esteemed editor, I am sure will also be happy to help you where he can. Looking forward to catching up with every one of you in the future. Keep the Faith (It’s a 356 thing) Marc Sherriff - Treasurer
President’s report with drives throughout the Perth hills to dine at Will Goose Winery and the Cider House.
BUSY TIMES BUT TIME WITH PCWA FRIENDS SO WORTH IT Have you heard that saying – we are all busy? Well it is especially true for PCWA members, as from my experience we are fully engaged people, so time out is precious. I tend to write most of my PCWA articles on a plane, as this is my time to gather thoughts on our club and where it is going. Statistically we are continuing to grow with 277 members, 5 more year on year as of June, similar cash at bank to 2017 and a similar number of events in the rear vision mirror. But evolution for a club is not about statistics, it is more about how club members interact and enjoy their time together – whether competing against each other or chatting at lunch. I am noticing club members now naturally reach out to new members and welcome them, catch up for dinner with kindred spirits and even go on DIY drives with similar model cars or driving styles. I was chatting to Raymond, who for 25 years has managed the racing timing for PCWA races. He quietly said to me, “the Porsche club members are some of the most down-toearth people I have worked with”. Not a bad compliment from a man who works with just about every sporting car club in WA. As we often say; “we are the Porsche club not the posh club”. The past few months have seen members attend a number of 50-60 member runs including “Lunch With an Old Friend” run where we caught up with Robyn Coleman who supported PCWA with Driving for Dreams, along
At each event you are likely to find Peter and Yvonne Ogden who take great photos for our Facebook page and this wonderful Porsche West Magazine, Andy and Kathy Stack directing or managing traffic and taking great pics, Brad Bradshaw who is virtually always the first one to sign up and Ian Rowson who with his amazing past as UK police driver trainer and a member of Her Majesty’s driving escorts gives us convoy driving tips at the beginning of many drives. Coming up in the second half of 2018 we have our big tour of the year; a 3 night 4 day weekend away to Margaret River in early November. Like all PCWA tours this will include a lovely hotel stay, some very special dinning experiences and convoys on some of the most beautiful roads in WA. If you have not toured with PCWA members before this could be your chance. Numbers will be limited so when we advise our final date by email, I suggest you jump in and book quickly. Finally, the Sporting Series is going well with fun competition between PCWA, HSV and TSOA competitors. Believe it or not Porsches do not always dominate the top 5 slots against these determined competitors. New drivers within PCWA often means existing Porsche drivers need to lift their game (and their eyes) if they are going to stay up the pointy end of the pack. David Blainey, our very capable Sporting Director, will have more to say in the Sporting section. Remember, it is your club. The committee is there to set philosophy and guide it, so please talk to your committee members about new ideas and importantly where you may be able to help create something that will build the club and create fun and joy for the members. May your roads be clear and have great corners.

Vice President’s report The new venue for the Wednesday evening club meetings proved a success. Meetings have been well attended with good food provided, as usual, by Kathy and Andy. Guest speakers were sourced and proved enjoyable. Several enjoyable weekend runs were organized with one recently joined by the Mercedes Club where a coffee stop and cheese tasting was organized before lunching in Harvey after some enjoyable scenic driving. The sports director runs an excellent busy programme with plenty of participants.
The committee continues to work enthusiastically and energetically.
The Club’s affairs are managed by a Committee of volunteers elected each year at our annual general meeting.
In summary the club is very active with a committee that continues to work enthusiastically and energetically for the members.
As all Committee Members are volunteers, email is our preferred method of communication. Private phone numbers are not listed on this website for privacy reasons. Refer to the name of the committee member above to send them an email.

Several additional tyre barriers are needed to be installed prior to CAMS approval of the extension. Current advice has the extension being ready for September so our SSR8 should be on the new extended track which I drove around after SSR3 – it looks good and challenging. Story & Photos: Porsche Cars Australia
World premiere for the ‘70 years Porsche sportscar’ celebrations The Porsche 911 Speedster Concept: open-top, pure and with over 500 hp. Porsche will be giving itself an excellent present for the 70th anniversary of its sports cars: the 911 Speedster Concept is a road-ready study of an open-top and particularly exciting sports car. It forges a link between the very first Porsche 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster, which received its operating permit on June 8, 1948, and the Porsche cars of today. With its pure concept and historically accurate execution, the 911 Speedster concept reflects the brand essence of the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer with precise clarity. A pure driving experience is the main emphasis of the car. The drive technology under the two-tone shell of the concept study is derived from the current GT models. It was developed at the Porsche Motorsport Centre, which is the birth place of the 911 GT2 RS and, most recently, the GT3 RS. The 911 Speedster Concept celebrated its world premiere as part of the official ‘70 years Porsche sportscar’ anniversary celebrations in Zuffenhausen. The concept study offers a glimpse of a potential series-production version, although this model may not be presented until 2019. A decision on whether to move ahead will be made in the coming months. The characteristics of the 911 Speedster Concept include the shorter window frame with a more inclined windscreen and correspondingly shortened side windows. These features give the sports car study an even stockier profile with a very low fly line, which is reminiscent of its predecessors such as the Porsche 356 1500 Speedster. A special rear cover made of carbon fibre connects behind the front seats, covering a roll-over protection structure and featuring
a ‘double bubble’, a traditional element of this sports car design since the 911 Speedster from 1988. Two contrasting black slats between the ‘humps’ add an aerodynamic touch, and a transparent Plexiglas wind deflector features an engraved ‘70 years of Porsche’ logo. As dictated by the historic original, the 911 Speedster Concept also features a lightweight tonneau cover instead of a convertible top. This cover protects the car interior from rain when parked, and is attached using eight Tenax fasteners. The lightweight principles of the Speedster philosophy continue through into the interior, where the navigation, radio and air conditioning systems have all been eliminated. The full bucket seats are made of carbon, and the light brown Aniline leather covers in Cognac 356 pick up on features from the car’s classic predecessors. The broad body of the concept car has been borrowed from the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, although the wings, front bonnet and rear cover of the concept are made of lightweight carbonfibre composite material. The paintwork in the traditional colours of GT Silver and White harks back to Porsche’s early racing cars – as do many of the other carefully crafted details, such as the 50s-style central fuel tank cap positioned in the middle of the front bonnet, the classic Talbot shape of the exterior mirrors or the unique design of the main headlights. Transparent and opaque surfaces on the headlight covers produce a cross-like effect and are nod to a practice prevalent in Porsche’s early years in motorsport. At the time, the original headlights were taped before races to protect them against stone chipping and to prevent the glass from shattering. The wide B-pillars and the rear are decorated with milled, gold-plated Speedster lettering.
Below the bodywork, the 911 Speedster Concept relies on state-of-the-art components. The chassis essentially comes from the 911 GT3, with contrasting high gloss polished clover-leaf details on the imposing 21-inch rims in Fuchs design. It is the first time that these wheels are presented with centre locks. The GT developers also contributed the exhaust system with titanium tailpipes and the powertrain, which includes a sixspeed manual transmission. The six-cylinder flat engine in this minimalist concept study delivers over 500 hp and reaches speeds of up to 9,000 rpm. The history of Porsche Speedster models begins in the USA Speedster variants of sports car models, which combine open-top driving pleasure with incredibly distinctive driving dynamics, have been part of the Porsche company history since 1952. The forefather of Porsche Speedster models, the 356 1500 America Roadster, had an aluminium body manufactured entirely by hand. It weighed 60 kilograms less than the 356 Coupé and its top speed of 175 km/h with its 70-hp four-cylinder flat engine was an impressive feat at the time. Featuring slot-in windows for the doors, a folding rain-cover top and lightweight bucket seats, this car developed exclusively for the US market was built just 16 times and already embodied several key elements of the Speedster design. By 2010, eight different series and special models had been created with the ‘Speedster’ byname. The 356 A 1500 GS Carrera GT Speedster represented a highlight in 1957, and the first 911 Speedster followed in 1988. The 356 units of the 911 Speedster produced for the 997 series in 2010 saw a temporary end to the production of Speedster variants.

Drive for Drive Sake - Destination York Motor Cycle Festival 15th April, 2018

DID I SAY SOMETHING WRONG – LIKE “MOTORCYCLES”? There are so many destinations and events happening just outside Perth environs and at the PCWA we know the longest ways to get to them! This Drive for Drive Sake was no exception but this time there was just 8 cars and 12 members, not our normal 40-50. Why? Motorcycles! Yes, the destination was York Motorcycle Festival and my guess is that a few chickened out when they realized the destination wasn’t our normal splash of luxury. There is a dark “Live-to-Ride” side to me as the proud owner of a 2009 Harley Davidson Nightrod Special. I mentioned the model as every inch of the bike is designed by Porsche. In fact, an identical one sits in the Porsche museum. I have tried to put it in concours but to no avail. Oh well. Our drive started at Tony’s Kitchen at Fairbrossen, a great destination for breakfast or lunch on the weekends. So worth going as it feels like Margaret River but it is 30 minutes from Perth. Try it. The roads – oh wow. After a 50km stint on the lovely but orderly Brookton Highway we had the joy and freedom of the wonderful wheatbelt roads of Wesdale Road, York Williams Road and our favourite West Talbot Road. The map is attached if one day you wake up and decide to escape for 2 hours of driving joy. Not to let down the PCWA reputation David and Jenny Blainey took us for an extra 5km drive to a very pretty dead-end causing all of us to laugh at ourselves for blindly following. It was great to see new members Jenny Whitely and Mark Albers along with Ian Rowson, Peter and Yvonne Ogden, Ray and Janet Galbraith and me by myself with no Grace Tan - and she likes motorbikes – well I thought she did?

On Sunday 6 May, 52 PCWA members escaped to the hills on a classic autumn day. We met at the Caltex Starmart on Abernethy Rd for a chat and a 9:30am start. The weather was cool with the promise of a light drizzle. John Wilding offered to lead our group through his local hills roads to the Core Cider House in Pickering Brook. PCWA members are well known for scattering en route, but John did a great job of keeping us all together on the run. The drive through Helena Valley, Ridge Hill, Gooseberry Hill, Mundaring Weir Road and Pickering Brook Roads took in the hills and valleys displaying gorgeous colours of autumn and more or-

chards than I knew existed in the Perth hills. In keeping with the “slightly twisted” theme, John led us on his own slightly twisted version of the route which included a colourful section of roads around Pickering Brook. At one corner the sign to Core Cider House pointed right but obediently all the Porsche cars turned left. On arrival at Core Cider House our new social director Julie organised the Porsche cars into our own parking area as we admired the picturesque views over the apple orchards. Lunch began with a tasting paddle of artisan ciders including the popular ginger and apple cider, lemony Pith’d and the intriguingly named sweet Coregasm cider. We enjoyed generous
servings of beetroot arancini and bruschetta for entrée and then your choice of grilled barramundi, pork belly burger, sirloin steak sandwich or pan-fried gnocchi with pumpkin and sage for main course. An occasional light drizzle of rain only added to the perfect autumn view over the apple orchards heavily laden with ripe fruit. One of my favourite ways to unwind on a Sunday afternoon includes a long table lunch with good food, wine (cider!), good friends and a view of the countryside – and this PCWA outing delivered it all.

Clubs are not dissimilar to people; they have personalities, they have interests and passions and they can be invited out to lunch – well our club can be. Robyn Coleman, who helped PCWA put on the large Driving for Dreams events in 2007 to 2009 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation has always been a friend of the club and visa versa. When Robyn called and invited us to lunch at her lovely colonial home in Harvey, I knew the club would turn out en mass but I did wonder about the size of her dining room table? Like kids invited to a party the first thing we did was invite some friends, so along came 26 members of the Mercedes Benz Club of WA to join our 55 partiers. We set off on a stormy wet wet wet day – it was perfect and no one grumbled once! Starting at our favourite Mundijong meeting location we headed to Jarrahdale to enjoy the Jarrahdale, Mundaring Weir, Buddhist Monastery run along Kingsbury Drive. It is a loop that

leaves South West highway and 30 minutes later returns just near Keysbrook. I do many sneaky drives there. Next journey was to Dwellingup through roads familiar and fun. For our first stop and morning tea the Blue Wren Café put on an amazing spread of scones, breakfast quiche, sausage roles AND all baked on site. We will be going back again! The next leg I think is one of the best drives nearby to Perth. Dwellingup, Nanga and Nanga Brook Road to Waroona. OMG it is wonderful! And the local service is fantastic! Service? Yes, with some 45 cars all in convoy we arrived at a massive fallen tree which 2 minutes later was magically being removed in front of us by an equally massive dozer. Rockstar service!
Final stop was lunch and Robyn had her home looking lovely. In classic Robyn style she had engaged the Harvey community with the local Italian ladies cooking the quiche, a team of retired gents parking the cars and cleaning up and a team of great locals cooking up a storm. We were all spoilt. The table – well there were many both undercover at the back of the home AND in the triple car garage which is her husband Steve’s brilliant Ford man-cave. Robyn if we were well mannered I wonder if we can come for lunch again? Ever want to do this drive yourself? You can find this and other drives on our PCWA website under club records / weekend drives.
Harvey Cheese was fantastic and the Cheese maker (Blessed are the Cheese Makers) introduced the members to some cheesy comestibles that were, OMG as their label says.

Round 2 of the 2018 Sports Series was a twilight super sprint on Friday 2 March 2018 on the long track at Barbagallo Raceway, Neerabup. The event was organised and run by PCWA with the Holden Special Vehicle Owners Club of WA (HSVOCWA) joining us at the event. Of the 27 cars that entered the event 11 were Porsches (plus Michael Broughton in his AMG Merc) and the remaining cars HSVOCWA and Associates cars. The weather was fine and warm with a cool breeze after rundown. The event ran smoothly thanks to the following PCWA volunteers: Barry Nash – Steward, Colin Strickland – Chief Scrutineer, Laurie Parmenter – Time keeper and David Blainey Clerk of Course / Secretary. Fastest car on the day was Barry Baltinas in his GT3RS, Daniel Devries in his 996 Cup Car was 2nd quickest and Jeffrey Foster 3rd in his 911S. Sports Series Round 3 – Collie Motorplex 21st April, 2018
Issue 2 - 2018
33
Round 3 of the 2018 Sports Series was a super sprint on Saturday 21 April 2018 at the Collie Motorplex. The event was run on the existing short track. The surface of the extended track has been completed but will not be open for racing until additional tyre barriers are installed. The event was organised and run by PCWA with the Holden Special Vehicle Owners Club of WA (HSVOCWA) joining us at the event. 51 cars registered for the event with 46 racing on the day. Of the 46 cars that entered the event 25 were Porsches (plus Michael Broughton in his AMG Merc) and the remaining cars HSVOCWA and Associates cars. There were 5 cars that pulled out due to the weather forecast predicting rain. The weather forecast was 100% correct. The weather was cool with the first 2 runs dry and all remaining runs were wet. The quickest times were in the first runs with times getting slower once the rain set in. The majority of drivers called it quits around lunchtime. Targa South West (TSW) and Targa West (TW) competitors continued driving in the wet conditions to gain experience for TSW and TW. Interestingly the 2018 TSW was totally dry. Thanks go to the PCWA volunteers who made the event possible: Barry Nash – Steward, Colin Strickland – Chief Scrutineer and David Blainey Clerk of Course / Secretary. Fastest cars on the day wre Blaise Paris in his 964 3.8 RSR, Barry Baltinas in his GT3RS was 2nd quickest and Sam Wolfe 4th fastest in a 996 GT3. Story: Deryck Graham and “Too”
Your Car’s History is in Surprising Places
Porsches Sourced Globally at Duttons So much importance is put on providence and history of our cars and for very good reason. This is how you see if the car has been well maintained, been in an accident maybe or owned by Californian Governor Sonny Bono … like one 1974 911 Targa in Queensland.
On that same tour, I found my 997 Turbo, the car I had been hunting for over 6 months. This cobalt blue manual 997 is also an addition to our little gene pool having first been delivered to Croydon just outside London in 2007 to the MD of a Jet leasing and sales company - clearly he likes to go fast!
We are becoming a lot more aware of how small our Australian market place is and, at last, we are seeing some fantastic cars being shared in Australia from all around the world. This is so important when you realize that at any given day there are 120,000 2-door Porsches for sale on the top 30 global car sites and just 650 for sale in Australia.
It was then sold to a printer who sold his business, moved to Australia and brought his car with him. Smart move on all sides! But this is where the fun starts because the car has the full PCM pack, which includes onboard navigation.
Like Sonny Bono’s car, smart collectors are seeking cars in all countries as can be seen when 38 PCWA members visited Dutton’s in Melbourne during our Tour of Tasmania. Most of the classic collectable cars in their amazing showroom were bought internationally to enhance our small Porsche gene pool.
Guess what – his journeys across the UK, throughout Europe to New Zealand and then down the east coast of Australia are all recorded! Despite only travelling 41,000km by the time “Too” was in my possession she had driven on some magnificent roads on the way to Australia including through the French Riviera, visiting Paris and Le Mans, Switzerland and Austria. Some of these roads I had even driven on in Sabine – I wonder if we passed each other? Anyway, suddenly the PCM tells us “Too” appeared in Tauranga and drove to Rotorua to see the famous Pohutu Geyser in New Zealand. After some sightseeing in NZ “Too” suddenly appeared in Palm Beach Gold Coast QLD before driving the Kamilaroi Hwy to Burke NSW on its way to Melbourne.
Tour to Le Mans Fancy a car cruising the Champs-Elysées in Paris then not long later driving though Burke in the outback of Australia! Clearly most of her miles were touring. Story & Photos: Porsche Cars Australia
70 Years of Porsche The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born. The Type 356 turned Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car into a reality. “His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the brand to this day”, said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “We plan to uphold the standard of technical excellence set by Ferry Porsche well into the future. Intelligent dynamic mobility has a great future ahead of it. And we have the solid technological expertise, creative employees and unique team spirit to be involved. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate – even in another 70 years.” The history of the Porsche brand begins in 1948. Yet the foundation of the sports car manufacturer is built upon the life’s work of Professor Ferdinand Porsche – work which his son Ferry then continued. Ferdinand Porsche had already designed pioneering innovations for the automotive industry as early as the start of the last century. In 1900, he built an electric car with a wheel hub drive known as the Lohner-Porsche, a
42

vehicle on which he would then base the world’s first all-wheel-drive passenger car. In the same year, he created a template for hybrid vehicles with the development of a mixed petrol-electric powertrain. In 1931, Ferdinand Porsche founded his own engineering office. The “BerlinRome Car” showcased in 1939 was the beginning of his idea for a sports car bearing the Porsche name, although this dream was only realised by his son Ferry in 1948 with the Type 356. The successor model to the 356, the Porsche 911 designed by Ferry Porsche’s son Ferdinand Alexander, finally gave the company its breakthrough as one of the leading manufacturers of sports cars in the world, both from a technical and a design perspective. The Porsche 911, presented to the global public for the first time in 1963, has now been built over a million times. “Although the 911 has been consistently developed in the intervening decades and enhanced many times over with new, innovative technologies, no other vehicle has managed to retain its original essence in the same way as the 911”, says Blume. “All Porsche models to be developed now and in the future are based on this sports
car. As the centrepiece of the brand, the 911 has become the sports car of dreams, winning the collective heart of enthusiasts all over the world.” The future of Porsche sports cars is already coming up to the starting line in the form of the Mission E, the first purely electrically driven technology champion from Zuffenhausen. This concept vehicle combines the distinctive emotional design of a Porsche, exceptional driving performance and forward-thinking everyday functionality. The four-door model with four individual seats delivers a system performance of over 440 kW (600 hp) and a range of more than 500 km, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and a charging time of around 15 minutes for 80 per cent of the electrical energy required. Porsche has invested around one billion euro in this futuristic project, creating more than 1,200 additional jobs just at the headquarters in StuttgartZuffenhausen, where the Mission E will be built. “Porsche will always be Porsche – the leading brand for exclusive, sporty mobility”, reinforces Blume.
Porsche is celebrating this year’s anniversary with numerous activities around the world. On February 3 “The Porsche Effect” opened at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. In Germany, the first “70 years of the Porsche sports car” exhibition will be open from March 20–31, at “DRIVE, the Volkswagen Group Forum” in Berlin. The Porsche Museum will also be holding its own anniversary celebrations with a comprehensive special exhibition opening on June 9. On the same day, Porsche will be inviting sports car fans to its “Sports Car Together Day” at all of its sites around the world. The “Festival of Speed” held from July 12–15, at the Goodwood race track in the UK, will also celebrate the anniversary, as will the “Rennsport Reunion” in California from September 27–30. The celebrations will conclude with the “Sound Night” event to be held for the first time in the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart on October 13. Our Porsche Story
Donna & I attending the Movie Premier of “The Man & LeMans” hosted by Chad McQueen in Houston Texas in 2015 The first step into Porsche ownership was in Dubai in 2001. After moving from Singapore to the U.A.E. to manage an Oil and Gas equipment manufacturing and services company Middle East division we ordered a new 996 Carrera. However, just before delivery, I was informed by the company HR Department that they would not pay a car allowance for a 2-door sports car. The order was cancelled and I purchased a BMW M5 instead. It was not until 2013, having moved to Houston, Texas that we finally made the move into Porsche ownership with a 991.1 4S. There had been many cars prior to the first Porsche, including a couple of 1960’s VW Beetles, a Saab, Audi, BMW 3 series, BMW M5 and a BMW X5. All great cars but the driving experience and engineering of the Porsche was a step above all of the prior cars we had owned. Driving in Houston was reasonably sedate on the small streets and slip roads but on the freeways it was not dissimilar to NASCAR and there were significant advantages driving a Porsche 911 when surrounded by numerous large fast pick-up trucks. The 911 was the only car we had and it was used as a daily driver and weekend trips up to Austin.
purchase was made on the spot. Our daughter Carly in Perth drives a Macan S and son Jake in Auckland New Zealand drives a 997 Turbo. Porsche has become the family brand. The Porsche 911 design, engineering and evolution from the 1960’s to today has always been on my radar. Having had a career in the oil and gas industry which included 20 years working for the services company Schlumberger, surrounded by innovative technology that had been impeccably manufactured and engineered, there had always been a fascination and appreciation with the Porsche 911. I have attended a track day at Barbagallo Raceway and we have been on a couple of PCWA drives around the W.A. hill country. The first introduction to PCWA was the 2017 Concours d’Elegance at Perry Lakes. We thought we would be there for a couple of hours but stayed for the day. It was a beautiful day, a great venue and we were made very welcome by the PCWA members.
In 2015, we traded in the BMW X5 we had in Perth for a new Cayenne V8 Diesel, a car that has been tagged in our family as “The Beast” due to its torque and power. Another great piece of engineering, blending luxury with practicality. We returned to Perth in 2017 and looked at numerous pre-owned Porsche 911’s around Australia. A couple of manual 993’s in the eastern states looked tempting but one Saturday I stopped by the Porsche Centre in Perth and they had a new 991.2 GTS on the floor. It looked amazing and the decision to 44

Porsche Targa Tasmania Tour (14th – 21st April, 2018)
I’m somewhat reluctant to divulge too much about our fantastic week in Tasmania in case too many of you will want to go and we’ll miss out next time! Together with Roderic and Lilian, Bev and I collected our cars from Porsche Centre Melbourne then joined the PCA team members and 80 or so participants at a nearby Restaurant for our ‘welcome’ dinner. We were also given individual ‘gift packs’ of jackets, caps, tags, programme and course notes. Then, off in loose convoy, to board the Spirit of Tasmania for a 9pm departure. After a rough overnight crossing to Devonport, 39 Porsches from all States set off in convoy to Symmons Plains Track for briefings, a relaxed lunch and some loose laps. Later, having checked into the Launceston Country Club, cars were scrutinised (one needing tyres), RallySafe Units installed, documentation completed, stickers and plates attached. Our group was divided into 6 sections and we were to be the first off each day. This meant we were usually having breakfast at dawn, breathalysed, and on the road to the first stage by 7am then ‘flat chat’ til late afternoon. We were lucky with the weather as a large High Pressure sat over Tasmania all week. Our ‘Tour’ got underway early on Monday the 16th with 3 short stages averaging about 7 kilometres each. The highlight of the day was a blast through the streets of George Town. 46
PORSCHE WEST
Nothing like doing 130kph in a 50 zone with the crowds applauding! One of our GT3RS kissed a kerb. Then with a cold beer it was time to watch the main competitors. A coach ride to dinner in Launceston at Cataract on Patterson Restaurant. On Tuesday we headed to the North Coast for 6 stages totaling 75km, with 277km travelling to and from the High Plains and Latrobe district. The Moriarty Stage was deceptive. A Lamborghini, Ferrari, and McLaren came off. Lunch at Red Feather Inn and dinner for 100 plus at Joseph Chromy Winery in Launceston. We headed to the East Coast on Wednesday for 6 fantastic stages averaging about 10km each through spectacular scenery. Sideling and Elephant Pass Stages were sensational. All told, some 317 km to and from St Helens. Dinner at Pierre’s Restaurant. On Thursday the 19th, we left Launceston for Burnie in the NorthWest and finished exhausted in Strahan. 6 Stages of 145km with an additional 295km touring. Cethana Stage was 38km, Hellyer Gorge and the Rosebery Original similar length. One of our 997s came off. A long day by the time we refueled and arrived at Strahan Hilltop Harbour.
That night at dinner interviews with Jim Richards, Barry Oliver and Matt Close (who unfortunately crashed the GT3 RS on the last day.) Starting in fog the next morning we left Strahan headed for Hobart via Queenstown and the Central Highlands. The fog cleared to beautiful blue sky by the time we reached the top of the Queenstown stage. A GT4 and a Cayman had an ‘Off’.
Paintwork and windscreens were chipped. Previous competitors had prepared their cars with lashings of tape in addition to wrapping. A word of warning, otherwise your precious car will bear the scars. In conclusion, we had a fantastic week of enjoying the countryside, closed roads and unadulterated fun letting our 911 have its head. The thoroughness of preparation by Pamela Ward and the friendly, helpful Porsche Cars Australia staff was exceptional, a truly first class adventure.
The Arrowsmith Stage was 53km of fantastic driving. Late in the day we refueled and checked into the Hobart Casino Hotel. That night Targa Fest at Princes Wharf showcased all the competitors’ cars. We had coaches to the amazing Mona Gallery for a ‘formal’ dinner. Early on the last day Saturday 21st , it was out through the Huon Valley for 6 memorable stages averaging 10km each. The Longley Stage in beautiful forest was the last but deceptive with damp patches. On arrival back in Hobart we were greeted by large crowds, crossing the finish line to be presented with well-earned medals! On to Frogmore Creek Winery for farewell lunch and good humoured presentations and speeches. Then it was the 260km stretch North to Devonport, arriving exhausted at the ship by 8pm. Thankfully, after a few beers with new friends, it was smooth sailing overnight to Melbourne. In total, we enjoyed 487 km of 33 closed road Stages and had travelled 2,436km on returning to Porsche Centre Melbourne.
SOME MEMORIES Beautiful weather with a large High Pressure sitting over Tasmania all week. Breakfast at dawn, breathalyser before chilly start. Green countryside with splashes of Autumn colours. Spectators everywhere and anywhere. Road Kill, Road Rash, Road Works! The thrill of spanking a Porsche on closed roads. ‘Spirited’ touring between Stages. Roadside splash before the Stage dash. CAUTION, Road goes hard right over crest narrow bridge culvert on left. End of day bragging and laughter. Who got lost getting to the first Stage? Who left their Stage Notes in their hotel luggage? ………. Exhausted! Nearly every day we were confronted by kilometres of freshly resurfaced tarmac covered in sharp loose gravel, apparently common in past events.

Issue 2 - 2018

Luftgekühlt is the brainchild of cofounders, two-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long (only US Porsche factory driver) and noted Southern California creative director, Howie Idelson.
(Luft-gek-cult) – a gathering of Porsche purists for vintage cars with air-cooled engines. (By the time I learned how to say the word correctly; I finally could spell it accurately as well!) When we attended a Cars and Coffee event in late March, we were introduced to SDPCA member, Adrian Silva and showed him a picture of our brilliant blue 1970 914-6. He complimented us on the car and said, “Your car should be in Luftgekühlt.” We said, “in what te ku hut?” and tried to pronounce the word. Adrian said the word again and stated that the word is German for “air cooled”, told us more about the event and how to contact the organizers. We checked out the previous events online and immediately knew we wanted to be there! We contacted Shane Mahoney at Luftgekühlt and later spoke to Patrick Long on the phone. He explained how the entry procedure worked and to make sure that we got our registration in as the event usually flls up within the frst 2-3 days of registration opening. So, as soon as we were notifed that registration was open, we immediately registered and were confrmed… we’re in!
The event started with just a few Los Angeles-area friends at an intimate morning get-together at Deus Ex Machina, a coffee shop and apparel store in Venice. Since then, there has been a successful Luftgekühlt 2, and 3 and the event has grown each year as the “word” gets out. Luftgekühlt covers everything from the pre-A series 356 to the 993, where production ended in 1998 and represents the last air-cooled car. Patrick himself is the proud owner of two air-cooled Porsches, a 1973 ivory Porsche 911 E and a 1966 Irish green 912. This year’s Luftgekühlt 4 event was held at the Warehouse No. 10 at the Port of Los Angeles on 112 E. 22nd Street in San Pedro. The official event took place on Sunday, May 7 from 7 am – 2 pm. The organizers allowed for some cars to be staged the day prior and they notifed us that we could come up on Saturday morning, which we were happy to do. As we drove the 914-6 carefully through the pouring rain, seeing a few fender benders along the way, we fnally came over the arching Vincent Thomas Bridge from Long Beach towards the San Pedro warehouse. We were excited to see where this year’s event would take place and how it would be “transformed” into another spectacular Luftgekühlt display of air-cooled Porsches. When we pulled up, we were greeted by Shane Mahoney. Then Patrick Long walked up and introduced himself and complimented our 1970 914-6. What a pleasure to meet this talented, creative man. They then escorted our brilliant blue car into the large parking lot area around several warehouses. Transporters were unloading and sets of cars were being directed into different areas, some into the large main warehouse. Several people were coordinating the precision parking of the Porsches. As we watched the choreography of the variety of different Porsche models moving into place, it was obvious that a lot of thought and planning went into their placement, the precision of the positioning and coordination of the spacing of the numerous styles and
colors of cars on the loading docks, in the parking lots and inside the warehouse. We loved the sound of their throaty engines as they went by. Everywhere you looked, there was a continuous flow of colorful eye candy beaconing you to browse and explore. The wide array of beautiful colors was amazing… orange, green, yellow, raspberry, blue, red, brown and more. And many more cars would be coming very early Sunday! We met Ken Vaugan from New York who brought his silver 914 that was parked behind us. This was his frst time at Luftgekühlt. He had his car transported across the country for the event. We really hit it off and enjoyed chatting with him at lunch at the microbrewery located on site. He too was a Porsche collector and had about 10 Porsches… all silver! It started to rain before we left so we both covered our cars. Many of the 356s were being completely wrapped in plastic. The forecast was for heavy showers and wind that evening. We returned early Sunday morning just as the rain was easing up, took the cover off our car and wiped it down. We were delighted to talk to spectators to answer questions and tell them stories about our authentic 914-6. The water puddles around the many cars made for some very interesting reflections for photographers. Cars came from all over the country, some transported and many driven from New York, Florida, Arizona, North Carolina and more. Many enthusiasts fly in from all over the US, Asia, Russia, Australia and Europe. The lines were forming and the sea of spectators flowed into the colorful arena of vintage Porsches. The weather didn’t have much affect on the turnout. We heard that there were about 600 air-cooled Porsches in Luftgekühlt 4 and estimated over 2000 spectators. The air cooled outside parking lot alone had about 200-300 cars. The thought and detail that went into the event was amazing. In one warehouse area, cars were positioned with a backdrop of

old historic Pirelli tyre posters, the work of Riccardo Manzi (1960)…really cool stuff. What a great relaxing place to just hang out, browse, chat about the cars and appreciate Porsche’s past while listening to the groovy music of the vintage 70’s and 80’s eras being played by a popular DJ. As we were viewing the cars by the Pirelli posters, I was surprised and received a big hug from Manny Alban, past National PCA President who had flown in from the east coast. That was a highlight for sure! We were totally “gobsmacked” when we went into the main room of the huge warehouse to view the Porsches. One of the beautifully orchestrated highlights of the show in this rustic industrial building was the fve silver Porsche gems that shoned under the three sparkling chandeliers draped across the woodraftered high ceiling with tentacles of small lights radiating out across the warehouse. It was magical and so well planned. A large grey box elevated the center-featured car up on its pedestal. This beauty was the 1949 Gmund 356SL that brought Porsche its frst class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951 (restored by 356 guru Rod Emory). WOW! Fanning out to each side were the 904 Carrera GTS, 550 Spyder, #44 1952 PorscheGlockler 356 Weidenhausen Roadster, and a 1959 silver 356 RSK/1960 RS60. Inside the other room of the warehouse, there was a very impressive perfectly spaced row of white cars: 1967 Porsche 911R, 2.7 RS, SC RS, 964 RS and 933 RS.
great conversation with David and Helmi Churcher. David is the editor of the North Country Region’s newsletter, the “Northlander” in New Hampshire. We have emailed and spoken since. In fact, he helped me with a few facts as well as supplying some photos for this article. What a super guy! True dedication to these cars was obvious all over this event. Each car had its own story and interesting background. Some had competed in events and still wore their original livery. One enthusiastic entrant sadly experienced a crash that damaged the nose of his Black SC or Carrera 3.2 and STILL had his car towed and positioned in place in the outer parking lot…after all, the show must go on! In addition to the unique indoor displays, there were also some unusual settings outside: a patinaed vintage 356 appeared to be abandoned, sitting under a tree snuggled in some bush. This car is owned by Matt Hurrel and is his daily driver. The car had its own personality and everyone loved it! It was one of the “Patina Porsches – the non- restored, non-shiny Porsche.
Each car at Luftgekühlt had its own “story” and that added to the appeal of this event… viewing and appreciating some of the fnest air-cooled cars of Porsche’s past, meeting people, talking about their cars and sharing stories in a very casual, low-key setting. Congratulations to Patrick Long, Howie Idelson and their entire staff and helpers for planning and putting on such unique, amazing events that allow enthusiasts to share this wonderful experience together…that’s what it’s all about! We anxiously await and look forward to attending Luftgekühlt 5!
(Photo credits: Margie Smith-Haas. Also, thank you to David Churcher, editor North Country Region-PCA for providing some of the photos and information for this article.)
Just across from it on a shiny diamond plate platformed ramp was the powerful Le Mans winning 1979 Kremer Porsche 935 K3.
Beautiful floor to ceiling backdrops hung behind the Rothman’s 959 Rally Car in one corner of the room which was just raced by Jeff Zwart at Mexico Rally and arrived complete with dirt still attached! The brilliant orange 1971 914-6 Monte Carlo Rally Race car was in another corner (also one of Jeff’s cars).
The display of both shiny and patinaed 356s was amazing and attracted many spectators. I read one journalist’s statement that was very appropriate: Many of these Porsches wore their patina and dustcoats like a “badge of honor.”
Many well-known collectors brought their vintage gems to the event. Some of those included Bruce Canepa, Singer Vehicle Design, Jeff Zwart, Jerry Seinfeld, Patrick Dempsey, Magnus Walker, the R Gruppe and others.
Another collection of models included 8-10 outstanding 914-6s and 914s (4 cylinder) lined up along the fence. There was also another long line of 912s. Periodically, we saw Magnus Walker with his cool dreadlocks strolling around checking out the cars.
Some of the other spectacular cars displayed included: Gulf’s 917 flat-12 – won Le Mans in 1970 and 1971 Sunoco 917 30 – driven by Mark Donohue, Can-Am Series 959 (Canepa) deep metallic green “Generation III”, 763hp. While seated in an open lounge setting enjoying a cup of coffee, we watched artist Mark Morgan working on a long wall of drawings displaying portraits of Ferry and Ferdinand Porsche, Steve McQueen, various Porsche air- cooled models, and special events. We met and struck up a
and grew up appreciating these air-cooled gems, feasted on the visual stimulation and absorbed all of the fun and energy of the event. We own two air-cooled Porsches, a 1970 914-6 and a 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo.
As the event was coming to a close, we personally congratulated and thanked Patrick. We hated to see all of the Porsche gems start to leave the lot. What a great time we had! Since then, we enjoy watching the many excellent videos and reading articles about Luftgekuhlt 4 to relive the experience. Being long time Porsche collectors and Porsche Club members since 1973, this event was right up our alley. Paul and I identifed Issue 2 - 2018

My Porsche Story (continued): The Second Porsche 944 Turbo 1987
My friend Tony (Owner of Carrera Motorsport and Engineering in the UK) had purchased a 1987 944 220BHP Turbo in Zermatt Silver from a guy in Glasgow, Scotland and as soon as I saw it I asked for first refusal on it if he sold it. And after some years, a knock at the door saw Tony and the 944 sitting outside with the question… do you still want it? The car was his main driver and had been repainted in the main traffic areas and it was looking good as well as being well maintained. The deal was done over a cup of coffee and the car complete with refurbed wheels and new MOT was mine a week later. Now I had 2 Porsches, a 911SC and the 944 Turbo! It was supposed to be a winter car, not Concours. But old habits die hard, so the car got the treatment and won a few show and shines in its time with me over 2 years. I spent a few long days just making the car even better. One day it wouldn’t start. So I checked all the normal items. It had fuel. I could hear the pump working but no spark so first thing to change was the DME relay for an updated one. It worked, but the non starting came back. Still no spark. So the next thing to change, after checking all the ignition parts, was the two sensors. My local Porsche dealer wanted £189 for each (damn expensive), so I went 52

on the internet for a Bosch agent and (luckily) found one just up the road from me. I took the old ones with me and they said no problem sir that will be £190 for the two! Xmas came early. They came in a Bosch box but all with the correct Porsche part number on each one so lesson learnt - Porsche profit and boxes cost. These fitted it started then stopped
again! The immobiliser was disconnected but still nothing. I gave up after many weeks got it to an independent Porsche garage I knew and it took some four weeks, for them to find it. A dodgy ECU. They could start and stop the car just by moving the unit around or shaking it!!! They tried another one from another car and it worked first time.
We managed to get a second hand unit from a Porsche breaker which worked right away so that problem solved. Apart from a cracked flange on the exhaust manifold, removed and welded, a change of cam belt and rollers plus a few other maintenance items such as front brake discs and pads, that was about it
I loved the car as a second one, used it frequently and drew some envious glances wherever it went. It was really fun to drive a real cruiser.
sills started to show signs of the dreaded tin rot in the sills at the back and there were a number of other niggles. So a decision was on the horizon as to what to do sell or repair?
It went to France, Germany and Luxemburg and back the long way! After a couple of year’s ownership it needed money spent on it. The
After much thought, the car was sold on to a new Porsche mad owner.

Story: Marc Sherriff
A conversation with Erwin
Erwin Komenda
Erwin Komenda, as many of you will be aware, penned the body design, and evolutions of the 356 we know and love. After some research on Erwin, and reading about his relationships with both the Porsche’s and Piechs, I would love to sit down with him, and discuss how he came about his design concepts. But first a bit of an outline. Born in Austria in 1904, this man designed, along with our beloved 356, some of the most prolific cars of the last century. His two obsessions being aerodynamics, and low weight, led to the inevitable designs that have outlasted his name. He was responsible either personally, or as part of a team, for the famous 1930’s Auto Union GP cars, the VW Beetle, the Cisitalia GP car, the prolific 550 Spyder, and was integral in the Porsche 901 design, which he saw through to production. His final project before passing away in 1966, was the famous 904 race car. This car alone is viewed by many Porsche purists as the ultimate road and track car. These last two, working with the prodigal (grand)son Ferdinand Porsche III, also known as “Butzi”, but more on him in another article. Add to this, when working with Daimler-Benz in the 30’s, he pretty much developed the monocoque construction technique that would allow him to get the car’s weight down, and more aerodynamic. These are incredible achievements in the motoring world, yet, he has somehow slipped under the radar, when motoring enthusiasts wax lyrical about the great automotive designers of the last century. I think it is fair to say, his initial sports car design, the 1939 VW Type 64 60K10 sports car, is clearly the beginning of what the Porsche brand was to become. Even his designs for the never built Cisitalia sports car, a sort 54
PORSCHE WEST
of 4-door version of a 356 Pre A, shows he had some fixed ideas on what a sports car should look like. Which, as it turns out, is exactly what they would end up looking like. You do not even have to squint hard at the 60K10 to see this was the amoeba that was to become a 2017 GT2 RS. Still using the same concepts of agile handling, lightest weight possible, and the right size motor for the chassis, not the biggest. So with all this in mind, this man’s little known achievements outside the Porsche and VW communities, I had to have a good think about what would I talk to him about in conversation? The fact he is one of my idols will always make the discussion awkward. Could I be “Cool” enough to avoid all the cliché’s he would expect? “What went through your mind when penning the 356?” This would not cut it. He was clearly into pure designs that he liked to see through to production, the fact all the 356’s were delivered to dealers without external mirrors, shows he liked uncluttered smooth lines, (or he thought the truck drivers lacked the attention needed to not accidently knock them off, during loading and unloading). Would this also mean his thought processes were also uncluttered? Did he travel everywhere with a pen and notepad, and draw shapes that appealed to him? I get the impression from his consistently aero design, he would have to have had some inspiration from nature, or the elements. Does this mean that Erwin painted, or sketched land or seascapes? The second one unlikely, as he lived so far inland, if regularly by large lakes. Maybe I am romanticizing this too much, and he just drew what popped into his head, and designed cars because it paid the bills, and being a newspaper cartoonist, which he may
have aspired to be, during the reign of the Third Reich, did not lend itself to longevity? So, I am no closer to the questions I would ask him. Would just reading him my thoughts, I am penning for you, be enough to open him up? I would be curious as to how that would go, along with wondering where he learnt English (or my version of it). I have not found anywhere that writes about the type of person he was. Was he an insular arty/engineering type? Was he outgoing, and bought the steins on a Friday night down at the local in Gmund? This would help me frame my questions. I guess if I did get a sit down
Erwin Komenda
Porsche type 64 from 1939 (photo from Errenzimmer) with him, this would be obvious off the get go. I would definitely ask what it was about the development of the 901 car that caused his near dismissal, near the end of his, too short life. Was it because the car was heavier than the 356? Less aerodynamic than the 356? Was it because the engine was far more complex, yet only mildly more powerful? This clearly went against his design ideas. These issues combined, very nearly caused a delay in the model release. They had to make it faster than the car it superceded. Especially as it was going to be a lot more expensive. As to actual design questions... I want to know what he drew for his kids. Everyone draws for their kids, his were probably just timeless designs, destined to be scribbled over with coloured crayons, before being placed on the fridge (or ice box). Or is that just at my kitchen table? I have had little joy in finding a Biography of Erwin, still in publication, that was written prior to his death. There are many holes in his story, I would love to read about.
Designer of the day - Erwin Komenda
Erwin, a (short) lifelong smoker died of lung cancer. His career at Porsche spanned some 37ish years, and was there from the start. Outside of the Porsche & Piech families, he really is the brand, and we should all acknowledge as such.

Book Review: The Small Silver Speedster – a Father/daughter/ car story (By Dwight Knowlton)
A page from the start of a race at Laguna Seca The Small Silver Speedster is a children’s illustrated book. It is beautifully illustrated by the author, who does a great job, showing the era of the story. It is about a father from California, who is ready to trade his old MG in for a more competitive race car. After flying with his daughter to New York, he purchases a new Porsche Speedster, from Max Hoffman himself. The pair then drive home via Route 66. The story then follows their trials and tribulations to getting their car to competitively by racing in the west coast SCCA events, at the famous race tracks of the era.
enthusiast. He also has other children’s illustrated story books that are car themed. This guy tries hard, and we should all reward him for his efforts. In the past, he has donated illustrated calendars to PCWA for giveaways at a member’s meeting. Overall this book is a great tool to lay the foundations for a future Porsche fan, or appreciative inheritee. That, in itself, is reason enough to buy a copy, in my opinion. Only available through Dwight’s website: www.carpegear.com
I will not divulge the outcome, but am sure you will not be surprised by it. The book is an easy bedtime read for youngsters, and will particularly appeal to young girls. My daughter loves it. It is not too long, and in its large format, is a great picture story book in its own right. The author, Dwight Knowlton, self publishes his books, and also prints a range of apparel for the car, and particularly the Porsche 56
