Soon we were high up and engulfed by fog. The visibility dropped to about 20m – an extra challenge while navigating single-laned bendy roads! So for the next 30 minutes, I took a more cautious approach, but also enjoyed the challenge and the eery scene, keeping well clear of any cyclist we came across (I was glad to be driving not riding up here today).
The fog cleared as we descended out of Kinglake and headed towards Hurstbridge, which gave me the opening to test the bends – one of the most impressive aspects of my car. And this part of the route gave ample opportunity with numerous tight curves hugging cliff drops, but I relished accelerating on the small stretches in between.
Lunch was waiting for us at the finish line at Bridges Restaurant. Its carpark was taken over by Porsches of all models and colours, but mostly, black, silver and white. And I think we only saw one Holden in the mix. (How did that get there?)
We took some time to pause as the paparazzi clicked away, before entering the restaurant, where we were gifted a glass of champagne for this celebratory occasion. Angelo, a long-time club member and classic Porsche enthusiast invited us to join him at his table with his paisans – friendships he had formed through the Club – to enjoy the three-course meal in their lively company.
The buzz of chatter mimicked the hum of Porsches and the one I was feeling inside. Which is to say, my accomplice and I were moved by the club’s warmth and hospitality on our first Social Run. And my only disappointment was that I didn’t get a chance to meet many of the other members or spend time checking out the cars more. But this left just me wanting to attend another run. So as Arnie says in The Terminator, ‘I’ll be back!’
