A Great New Tool for Demolition by Mark Clement published June 11, 2010 on DIY Network Blog – Tool Pegboard
Okay, guilty — I love demolition. I think it appeals to most of us who pride ourselves on improving upon something. Demo is always the first step and can be fun, if done smartly. To make progress in demolition you need the right approach. Sorry to buck conventional wisdom here, but a sledge hammer has almost no use in taking a house apart. What does, are tools that enable you to “pierce and pry”, which is how you pull a house apart. A smokin’ new tool for that comes from the world of roofing — a place called Roofers World. Their Little Red Ripper has sharp, rugged teeth that make it the optimal tool for the pierce-andpry method. The Little Red is designed for plucking apart small roof sections where a big tool is too much — places like dormers, around flashing, plumbing and skylights, however, Little Red can be used for way more than that. At 24 inches long, it’s got enough fetch to yank up floor boards and its sharp teeth mean business getting behind plaster. The strike-head loads the deck so cracking up a tile or beating a really stuck-in-there nail takes less effort. Little Red looks like it could work for peeling off trim and prying apart old door openings, though I haven’t gotten to this project yet. I can already tell wire lath held fast with roofing nails doesn’t stand a chance. I love it when I find tools that are versatile enough to go (safely) beyond their original design intentions. Let me know what you use your Little Red for. This only scratches the surface of what I expect are its 1001 uses.
