WELCOME Hello from the Rooftop! Rooftop Films has been showing movies outdoors since 1997, and over the years we have seen some extraordinary events and experienced some seismic shifts in film, culture, politics and media. But as we began preparing for the 2017 Summer Series amidst the turbulence of last fall’s election, we realized that some soul-searching was in order. How should our organization respond to such wild and unpredictable circumstances? When the duest settled, we realized that Rooftop Films’ mission is as vital now as ever. Culture is just as important in times of turmoil. Community matters just as much in these times. Films still make a difference. We at Rooftop have dedicated ourselves to supporting independent filmmakers, introducing audiences to fascinating corners of the city that they may not otherwise experience, and creating exhilarating, immersive experiences that enliven and enrich communities. And in 2017, we are set to do all of those things once again, and with more exceptional new films and more spectacular venues than ever before. This summer we will screen new indepedent films directed by a diverse group of filmmakers from all over the world. Many films will address some of the most important issues facing our time, including Sabaa Folayan and Damon Davis’ powerful Ferguson film, Whose Streets?, Jairus McLeary and Gethin Aldous’ SXSW-winning The Work, and the US premiere of Maple J. Rasza and Milton Guillen’s one-of-a-kind immersive experience, The Maribor Uprisings: A Live Participatory Film. We will also be presenting works by some of the most exciting visionary young filmmakers in the U.S.. On June 21st, we will welcome back Rooftop grantee Ana Lily Amirpour with an exclusive screening of her hallucinogenic new film, The Bad Batch. A week later we will share one of the most innovative comedies in recent memory when we show Dave McCary’s unpredictably hilarious Brigsby Bear; and 8 | www.rooftopfilms.com
we'll close the summer with Brooklyn auteur Eliza Hittman's follow up to her spellbinding feature It Felt Like Love with her equally powerful Brooklyn coming of age story, Beach Rats. Rooftop champions the expressive power of artful documentaries. This summer, some of the most brilliant and daring non-fiction films of the year will be making their way to the roof: Yuri Ancarani ventures deep into the desert to capture Qatari sheiks as they compete in their decadent falconry competitions in The Challenge; Dan Sickle and Antonio Santini bring out the melancholy beauty of Philadelphia in their Sundancewinner Dina; and Jonathan Olshefski captures the perseverance of a brave family in his masterful doc, Quest. Nothing is more important to us than nurturing the careers of up-and-coming filmmakers, and we will do just that with the U.S. premiere of Vanessa Stockley’s The Genius and the Opera Singer, a fascinating protrait of an eccentric mother and daughter who have been living a Grey Gardens-like existence in a West Village apartment since the 1960’s; and Jeff Unay establishes himself as a lyrical emerging artist as he humanizes the rough and tumble world of a semi-pro MMA fighter in The Cage Fighter. Each year, Rooftop Films seeks to make the Summer Series more spectacular and farreaching, each season bigger and better than the last. The last several months have had their dispiriting moments, but looking at this year’s batch of films and musicians, the future of culture looks bright and bold. Join us at any of our more than 45 outdoor screenings and become a part of one of the most exciting and innovative cultural communities in the world. We go all summer long, so come on up to the roof and check out what’s going on. Dan Nuxoll, Artistic Director and Genevieve DeLaurier, Managing Director
ABOUT US WHO WE ARE Rooftop Films was born in 1997 when filmmaker Mark Elijah Rosenberg got out his 16MM projector and a big white sheet and invited everyone he could find to the roof above his tiny East Village apartment to watch new short films. Over the last 20 years, Rooftop has become one of the premier venues in the country for new independent short and feature films. But Rooftop Films events are more than just film screenings. We’ve refreshed the old traditions: turning the drive-in of yesteryear into an urban phenomenon; turning the old concept of a film festival into a vibrant, thrilling event; bringing independent film to new audiences that wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to them.
ROOFTOP FILMMAKERS’ FUND
Rooftop Films not only exhibits films from around the world, we also support our alumni filmmakers by helping them produce their next film. In addition to providing service grants from our partner organizations, we commit $1 of every ticket sold and every film submission fee to the fund. Every filmmaker who has ever shown a film with Rooftop Films is eligible to apply for a grant, and in 2016 Rooftop Films awarded more than $250,000 worth of cash and service grants to filmmakers. Past grantees have included Menashe, The Bad Batch, The Fits, Blue Ruin and Beasts of the Southern Wild.
ROOFTOP COMMUNITY FUND
At Rooftop Films we believe film, music, art and culture are meant to be shared; that lasting memories are those that occur communally, in an environment that encourages interaction, discussion, and vibrant, emotionally rich experiences.
In an effort to support truly independent screenings, Rooftop makes all its film/video exhibition equipment, as well as our event production expertise, available to the public through low-cost or free rentals. In 2016 we donated and discounted over $175,000 worth of equipment and services to artists, nonprofits and community groups.

The Bad Batch
Band Aid
Director Ana Lily Amirpour, U.S.A., 118'
Director Zoe Lister-Jones, U.S.A., 94'
The Bad Batch follows Arlen (Suki Waterhouse) after she's left in a Texas wasteland fenced off from civilization. While trying to navigate the unforgiving landscape, Arlen is captured by a savage band of cannibals led by the mysterious Miami Man (Jason Momoa). With her life on the line, she makes her way to The Dream (Keanu Reeves). As she adjusts to life in 'the bad batch' Arlen discovers that being good or bad mostly depends on who's standing next to you.
Band Aid, the refreshingly raw, real, and hilarious feature debut from Zoe ListerJones, is the story of a couple, Anna (Zoe Lister-Jones) and Ben (Adam Pally), who can't stop fighting. Advised by their therapist to try and work through their grief unconventionally, they are reminded of their shared love of music. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, they decide to turn all their fights into song, and with the help of their neighbor Dave (Fred Armisen), they start a band. A story of love, loss, and rock and roll, Band Aid is a witty and perceptive view of modern romance, with some seriously catchy pop hooks to boot.
Being good or bad mostly depends on who's standing next to you.

Beach Rats
A Brooklyn teen spends his summer scoring weed, flirting with girls & cruising for older men online.
The Big Sick
Pakistan-born comedian Kumail and American grad student Emily fall in love but struggle as cultures clash.
Director Michael Showalter, USA, 119'
Eliza Hittman follows up her acclaimed debut It Felt Like Love with this sensitive chronicle of sexual becoming. Frankie (a breakout Harris Dickinson), a bored teenager living in South Brooklyn, regularly haunts the Coney Island boardwalk with his boys— trying to score weed, flirting with girls, killing time. But he spends his late nights dipping his toes into the world of online cruising, connecting with older men and exploring the desires he harbors but doesn’t yet fully understand. Sensuously lensed on 16mm by cinematographer Hélène Louvart, Beach Rats presents a colorful and textured world roiling with secret appetites and youthful self-discovery.
Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. To their suprise, their one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of war between his family and his heart. The Big Sick is directed by Michael Showalter (Hello My Name Is Doris) and produced by Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, This Is 40) and Barry Mendel (Trainwreck, The Royal Tenenbaums).

Casting JonBenet
Local actors offer perspectives on her murder while vying for roles in a film about the case.
Director Kitty Green, U.S.A., 81' Casting JonBenet is a sly and stylized exploration of the world's most sensationalized child-murder case: the still unresolved death of six-year-old American beauty queen, JonBenet Ramsey. Have a Nice Day (Hao ji le)
The Incredible Jessica James
Director Liu Jian, China, 75'
Director Jim Strouse, U.S.A., 85'
A bag full of Yuan falls into the hands of two mobster delivery guys, setting off a string of betrayals, twists and turns dragging us deep inside the unpredictable underworld of Southern China. The first animated Chinese feature film to ever compete at the Berlin Film Festival, Have a Nice Day is a laconically witty thriller that introduces western audiences to a bold new pop stylist. Featuring aging hitmen, philosopher gangsters, a motley crew of wanna-be criminals, and an irresistible soundtrack, Jian’s film is much more than a crafty animated neo-noir—it’s also an examination of Chinese culture and of the social conditions pushing desperate individuals to the brink.
Jessica Williams (“The Daily Show”) stars as a young, aspiring playwright in New York City who is struggling to get over a recent breakup. When she is forced to go on a date with the recently divorced Boone, played by Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), the unlikely duo discover how to make it through the tough times in a social media obsessed post-relationship universe. Lakeith Stanfield (FX’s “Atlanta”, Straight Outta Compton) and Noël Wells (Netflix’s “Master of None”) co-star. The film was written and directed by Jim Strouse and produced by Michael B. Clark and Alex Turtletaub of Beachside. Jessica Williams and Kerri Hundley serve as executive producers.

Annette (Michelle Morgan) and Elliot (Jorma Taccone) are a mostly happy, moderately neurotic LA couple. Annette doesn't enjoy game nights or taco stands quite as much as Elliot does, but no relationship is perfect, right? Directors Maple Rasza, Milton Guillén, U.S.A., Slovenia, 90' In the once prosperous industrial city of Maribor, Slovenia, anger over political corruption became unruly revolt. In The Maribor Uprisings —part film, part conversation and part interactive experiment —you are invited to participate in the protests. Drawing on the dramatic frontline footage from a video activist collective embedded within the uprisings, you begin in Maribor as crowds surround and ransack City Hall under a hailstorm of tear gas canisters. As a group, you must choose which cameras you will follow and therefore how the events will unfold. Like those who joined the actual uprisings, you will decide between joining non-violent protests or following rowdy crowds towards City Hall and greater conflict. These events stand as an example for any number of ideological stand-offs today. What sparks outrage? How are participants swept up in—and changed by— confrontations with police? Menashe
A loving Hasidic father struggles to maintain custody of his son after his wife passes away.
Monkey Business: The Adventures of Curious George's Creators
Discover the extraordinary life of the Reys, creators of the beloved Curious George books.
Director Joshua Z Weinstein, U.S.A., 81' Set within the New York Hasidic community in Borough Park, Brooklyn, Menashe follows a kind but hapless grocery store clerk trying to maintain custody of his son Rieven after his wife, Lea, passes away. Since they live in a tradition-bound culture that requires a mother present in every home, Rieven is supposed to be adopted by the boy’s strict, married uncle, but Menashe’s Rabbi decides to grant him one week to spend with Rieven prior to Lea’s memorial. Their time together offers Menashe a final chance to prove to his skeptical community that he can be a capable parent. Based largely on the real life of its Hasidic star Menashe Lustig, shot in secret entirely within the Hasidic neighborhood depicted in the film, and one of the only movies to be performed in Yiddish in nearly 70 years, Menashe is a warm, life affirming look at the universal bonds between father and son that also sheds unusual light on a notoriously private community. An A24 release Winner of the Rooftop Films Brigade Festival Publicity Grant.
Director Ema Ryan Yamazaki, U.S.A., 76' Featuring a narrow escape from the Nazis on makeshift bicycles, Monkey Business explores the extraordinary lives of Hans and Margret Rey, the authors of the beloved Curious George children’s books. An Orchard release.

Rat Film
The Road Movie
Director Theo Anthony, U.S.A., 84'
Director Dmitrii Kalashnikov, Russia, 67'
Living within our walls, traversing our alleyways, and penetrating our fences, rats not only expose our boundaries of separation but make homes within them. Rat Film is a feature-length documentary that uses the pretext of the rat—as well as the humans that love them, live with them, and kill them —to explore the history of Baltimore. In the words of one Baltimore rat expert, "There's never been a rat problem in Baltimore, it's always been a people problem".
A fascinating mosaic of asphalt adventures, landscape photography, and some of the craziest shit you’ve ever seen, Kalashnikov’s The Road Movie is a stunning compilation of video footage shot exclusively via dashboard cameras in Russian automobiles. Due to lax regulations, the dash-cam is ubiquitous in Russia automobiles. Tens of millions of videos are created each day, capturing a vivid range of spectacles through the windshield, including comets crashing down to Earth, forest fires raging along the highway, and no shortage of motorists escalating road rage to new and unexpected levels. The video footage featured in Kalashnikov’s hilarious and bizarre film is often shocking, but no more so than the stoic commentary coming from the jaded Russian passengers.

Whose Streets?
An unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising told by the activists and leaders who were there.
The Work
A raw and revealing look into a Folsom Prison therapy retreat.
Directors Jairus McLeary, Gethin Aldous, U.S.A., 87'
When unarmed teenager Michael Brown is killed by police and left lying in the street for hours, it marks a breaking point for the residents of St. Louis, Missouri. Grief, long-standing racial tensions and renewed anger bring residents together to hold vigil and protest this latest tragedy. Empowered parents, artists, and teachers from around the country come together as freedom fighters. As the National Guard descends on Ferguson with military grade weaponry, these young community members become the torchbearers of a new resistance. Told by the activists and leaders who live and breathe this movement for justice, Whose Streets? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising.
Set inside a single room in Folsom Prison, The Work follows three men from outside as they participate in a four-day group therapy retreat with level-four convicts. Over the four days, each man in the room takes his turn at delving deep into his past. The raw and revealing process that the incarcerated men undertake exceeds the expectations of the free men, ripping them out of their comfort zones and forcing them to see themselves and the prisoners in unexpected ways. Named the Best Feature Documentary at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, The Work offers a powerful and rare look past the cinder block walls, steel doors and the dehumanizing tropes in our culture to reveal a movement of change and redemption that transcends what we think of as rehabilitation.

Dark Toons
A labyrinth of bold animations from places mysterious, clandestine and just plain unlit.
These toons are chock full of furry animals and imaginative creatures but they are not for Sunday morning. The twisted and perverse landscapes of our annual Dark Toons program provide a unique backdrop for stories of life askew. From a true story of forced labor at communist-era prison that kept megastores in the West fully-stocked, to a beautifully-animated and probably-alcoholic badger who has a run-in with the law, to a woman who can’t stop growing fingers, these tales remind us that animation is the ideal medium to glimpse the darker side of life.

The New American Paradise New York Nonfiction Postcards from the United States of WTF.
It's your city. Take a look.
Pop your New York bubble on a journey to the more peculiar corners of the modern U.S of A. In the land of drive-in churches, carnival boardwalks, border walls, and get-rich-quick schemes, any one of us could end up on the downside of the American dream: another desperado with a mask melted onto our face, searching for a nugget at the bottom of a dirty tin can.
You see them everyday. They’re on the train with you. They’re in your bodega. They’re your neighbors. But after this program of short films, we guarantee you’ll see them in a new light. Ours is a city full of recordholding record holders, spousal adoptions, trash havens, civil rights pioneers, lapsed goth kids, sexting teens, rambles full of leathermen, and unending change; and we like it that way... for the most part.
