The third annual Scottish Export Awards 2016 sponsored by HSBC and held in association with Scottish Enterprise takes place on Wednesday 23 March at the Glasgow Hilton. The event brings together businesses from across Scotland to celebrate their entrepreneurial exporting achievements as well as encourage others to increase their export potential. Exporting and international trade remain central to Scotland’s economic growth agenda and these awards are about recognising the excellence in those emerging, wealth creating companies that are selling their products, services and expertise in scores of overseas markets. It is vital that we appreciate and recognise the emerging Scottish companies who have made the transition from being great local companies to potentially world class exporting businesses based in Scotland. Exporting continues to present an opportunity for Scotland to bring immediate and sustainable growth to its economy and with this in mind we need to lay down the baton to SME’s across Scotland to consider exporting as a realistic opportunity for growth. The team at BQ would personally like to thank all 101 exporters who entered this year, 45 of which were shortlisted across 8 categories representing export turnover of almost £300m. We look forward to hearing some of their stories throughout the evening. We would also like to thank our judging panel - Neil Francis, Director, International Trade and Investment Operations at Scottish Enterprise; Peter Ranscombe, editor at BQ Scotland; David Scott, deputy head of corporate banking Scotland at HSBC and Jonathan Golby, sales and marketing director at Peak Scientific. As well as agreeing on 8 category winners, the judges also had the difficult task of awarding one of these companies the overall title of Scottish Exporter of the Year 2016. BQ continues to celebrate and inspire entrepreneurship and to recognise the achievements of entrepreneurs across the UK. The keynote address of the evening will be delivered by Paul Grant, Chairman of Mackays on how he has turned around the fortunes of the heritage preserve brand whilst also achieving exceptional export growth. We are also joined by Mark Easton, BBC Home Editor, who as host for the evening will be sharing our export success stories.

HSBC SCOTTISH EXPORT AWARDS 2016
A welcome from our partners HSBC
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am delighted to be with you here tonight at the prestigious Scottish Export Awards. I would like to start by congratulating those of you here today that have been successfully shortlisted for this year’s awards and wish you the best of luck.
You have all demonstrated your courage and desire to build and develop successful businesses both here in the UK and now overseas. Celebrating last year our 150th anniversary, international trade is at the heart of HSBC. A bank formed to facilitate international trade between Hong Kong and the rest of the world it is built into our heritage and it remains a key part of our ethos today. I am therefore delighted that HSBC is sponsoring the Exporter of the Year Award. The team here in Scotland continues to see a strong flow of enquiries from customers looking to expand into overseas markets. As one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisations with a geographic network – which covers over 90% of world trade and Foreign Direct Investment that spans
the world’s high growth markets HSBC are well placed to guide businesses as they seek to take full advantage of the opportunities that expanding into new markets presents. I am also passionate about how we work with in partnership with organisations such as Scottish Enterprise, SCDI and UK Export Finance to support and help aspirant and growing exporters. Tonight’s awards provide us with an opportunity to recognise and celebrate those forward-thinking businesses, who play such a big part in boosting Scotland’s economy by taking their products and services all over the world. Good luck to you all.
And with that level of innovative, entrepreneurial thinking it’s no surprise that these companies are having great success in international markets. Research has shown us that companies which export are more likely to be productive, innovative and resilient during times of economic downturn. Scottish Development International, the international arm of Scotland’s Enterprise Agencies, is currently helping over 2,500 businesses to develop their export capacity and ‘go global’. The challenge is to continue to increase the number of Scottish firms with global ambitions. Inspiring and supporting our first time exporters to trade overseas while also helping existing exporters to diversify into new markets or export more frequently is vital. And that’s something Scotland’s enterprise agencies, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, are committed to enhancing further. Inspiring
and supporting our first time exporters to trade overseas while also helping existing exporters to diversify into new markets or export more frequently is vital. As part of that process, I’d urge you to make full use of all the tools at your disposal, whether that’s exploiting social media channels, accessing global networks or taking advantage of the one-to-one expert support available. We have a tremendous amount to be proud of when it comes to Scotland’s global profile and we’ll see compelling evidence of that from the companies represented here tonight. We know that in order to maximise the opportunities we must continue to work alongside our private sector partners to drive forward your international ambitions.

A decision for Heathrow is a decision for exports. Expanding Heathrow will open up more direct routes to more global markets. It’ll help more British companies to get trading abroad. In fact, expanding Heathrow could boost Britain’s economy by a total of up to £211bn. It’s a new and ambitious vision, backed by the Airports Commission. Peak is already the second-largest player in its sector, with around 15% market share. One of the factors that sets it apart from its competitors is the servicing and on-site customer support that it can offer using its own engineers. Instead of taking a gas generator away to a factory for repair in the event of a breakdown, Peak’s engineers can fix 95% of problems on the spot. Having its own global team of field service engineers instead of relying on third parties has been a key part of the company’s success and rapid growth, with the first boots on the ground in a new country often those of an engineer rather than a sales or business development person.
