green at home If you‘re in the market for new furniture, a remodel or a new home, it pays to get the scoop on the latest green advances. In honor of this month‘s Earth Day, we summarized current green trends for home.

If you‘re heading northeast this summer, consider a side trip to Fallingwater; a one-with-nature home Frank Lloyd Wright built in the 1930s, just outside Pittsburgh. Surely, this is Wright at his finest! Or you can duplicate (or just admire!) Wright‘s favorite organic colors by checking out Pittsburg® Paints‘ Fallingwater palette. The Pennsylvania-based paint company developed the color palette after working with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to repaint the home in 2006.

remembering elizabeth

Rare beauty, humanitarian, Hollywood royalty... Elizabeth Taylor will be remembered for many things, not the least of which was her remarkable style, on and off the silver screen.

A COLORFUL LIFE Taylor left us more than pretty pictures. Her approach to color was especially distinctive, shifting between rich classic and softly elegant palettes. Elizabeth Taylor: A Color-filled legacy http://blog.roomplanners.com/blog/home-design-furniture-and-color-tips/elizabeth-taylor-a-lady-who-knew-something-about-color

QUEEN OF THE CLASSIC Her stunning beauty made Taylor the perfect pick to play Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. But her most epic movie also reveals the colors, design motifs, furnishings and lifestyle that still inspires classic interiors today. royals to move into Welsh farmhouse Following a lavish wedding on April 29th, Prince William and Kate will settle into a more rustic setting near Will‘s Royal Air Force base in Anglesey, North Wales. The couple has hired Beverley Hills designer Kenneth Bordewick to help them with the makeover. The designer-to-the-stars flew to London last month to meet with William and Kate to begin work on their first home. ―They want it to be causal and contemporary; it won‘t be classical or old-fashioned at all,‖ Bordewick revealed. ―They know that the rest of their lives is going to be very traditional and want to let their hair down now with a typical young, newlywed house, This is really a stretch from what William has grown up with and they‘re excited to have a change.‖ ―Kate loves to cook so we‘re focusing on the kitchen and fitting it with large American-style appliances.‖ Bordewick also wants the master suite to be lovely for Kate. ―I like to make a woman‘s boudoir her sanctuary. It needs to be feminine, young and sexy.‖ Read the full story at: http://bit.ly/g4WCGx http://blog.roomplanners.com/blog/home-design-furniture-and-color-tips/prince-william-and-kate-hire-beverly-hills-designer-to-renovate-welsh-farmhouse

bohemian chic Townhouse meets rock ‗n roll chic in the recent renovation of the Redbury Hotel in Los Angeles. The hotel‘s owner wanted a romantic, soulful and funky look and brand director, Matthew Rolston came through with more than a few bohemian touches. ―There‘s a vaguely Victorian-era English quality to many of the materials and finishes,‖ Holston says, adding that the guest room décor channels an eccentric aunt‘s boudoir. 10 comforts

creature

for the way we really live... They cave to our creature habits, embrace technology, ignore room labels and make the most of space. Today’s creature comforts have little to do with how we should live, and everything to do with how we do live!

So here’s to those of us who don’t always eat at the kitchen table, don’t just watch TV in the living room and rarely use a desk for work. 6

adjustable mattresses

Once the domain of the elderly and the back-problem-prone, adjustable mattresses have gone from not-so-cool to red hot. According to research by TempurPedic and StrategyOne, 38% of us want to incline or recline our head or feet at the touch of a button. Adjustable mattresses offer a serious return on their investment, including more comfort while watching TV, working or reading in bed... and less snoring or acid reflux. The mattress shown here features independently operated sides and four programmable memory positions.

Once just a place for feet, ottomans have morphed into plush places to stretch out or sit for a bit. Over-sized ottomans are even an alternative to coffee tables, offering a luxurious place to perch a tray or stretch our legs.

gathering tables Known by many names, pub tables, counter-height tables and gathering tables are a symbol of our casual lifestyles, where socializing is on par with good style and great food. Born of bars and pubs, higher-height tables are a party magnet: standing people are at the same height as sitting people, encouraging people to gather round! Perched on a bar chair, we also feel like we‘re eating out… not a bad thing with waning restaurant budgets! PHOTO: Kincaid Furniture, Highland Park

Ok. Show of hands. Who doesn’t sit in bed with their lap-top computer, iPod or cell phone? And who doesn’t need to recharge their myriad of portable electronics at night? So it just made sense for the nightstand to become grand central for electronics and an easy way to stay powered up. STORAGE BEDS Say good-bye to dust bunnies, monsters and plastic pull-out bins under your bed! Under-bed drawers on one or both sides offer a streamlined look and eliminate the need for a bed skirt. First inspired by ships and boats where storage was packed into every nook and cranny, storage beds have been a long-standing favorite in kid‘s rooms. With homes trending smaller, storage beds are fast becoming a smart way to utilize unused space in any bedroom. PHOTO: American Drew, Tribecca

MEDIA CHESTs

No more precariously placing your TV on your bedroom dresser ‌ or on a cheap TV cart in the living room! At a good height for TVwatching, a media chest features lower storage drawers and a flipopen top drawer to store audiovisual players. Plus it coordinates with other room pieces. Some chests, like the one shown here, include a power bar and optional top-drawer glass inserts for remote control use. PHOTO: Universal Furniture, Paula Deen Home.

savannah style SHE’S BELOVED FOR HER COMFORT FOOD. But this southern belle knows a thing or two about creating a comfortable home, too. We sat down with Paula Deen to discuss her home in Savannah and a new line of furniture it inspired! www.roomplanners.com APR 2011 13

RP: We know you’ve got a knack for cooking. But you seem to have a love of home décor, too. What inspired you to launch your own furniture line? Paula: My kitchen has always been therapeutic for me. But so has my whole home. If you‘ve heard my story, you know that I went on a 20 year ride with agoraphobia. My whole life was whatever was taking place in my home. I loved to decorate and make things pretty around me while I was stirring my pot. When the opportunity came along to create a home collection, I immediately said yes. It was a natural progression. What inspired the designs for the line? And are some of the pieces similar to pieces in your home? Definitely, Oh, definitely. The designs are inspired by favorite pieces I‘d collected over the years; a lot of them I‘d picked up from yard sales and junk shops! So when Universal Furniture and Craftmaster‘s designers came to my house, we just had a wonderful three days together! They went back to their

drawing board and when they came back to me it was unbelievable. Pieces I‘d paid a lot for, they duplicated, even the finishes! It‘s exquisite. They hit my mark. How would you describe that mark… or your approach to putting your name behind a product? When my children and I started our restaurant, my thought philosophy was… Ok, sons, we want to serve the very best meals that we‘re capable of preparing for a fair price. I‘ve carried that same thought process through other legs of my business. If my friends or fans or family see anything I have, I want them to be able to have it too… and I want it be affordable. And this collection is affordable; that‘s the beauty. The styling suggests a mix of country, cottage and even classic influences. Is an eclectic style your way of creating a home that feels comfortable? I just love pieces like that that are one-ofa-kind. But I like a feeling of subtleness, too, and furniture that doesn‘t get all in your face. I wanted the styling of my furniture line to be comfortable and warm, so you‘d know immediately that it‘s not something you‘re not supposed to walk around, but you‘re supposed to use. I‘ve always wanted my home - whether I had money or whether I didn‘t, to feel like arms around you, drawing you in when you walk in the door. I think that‘s what this collection does. It makes you immediately feel comfortable. Of course, we’d assume your kitchen is your favorite room in the house? You know, when we built our new house, I said to myself... I want to show women who are building or remodeling this room that I have. It‘s my dish pantry. I want them to think about the importance of this room. It‘s as important as the laundry room. I can hardly get on my knees anymore. www.roomplanners.com APR 2011 17

PREVIOUS PAGE. “My favorite colors are an extension of God‘s colors,‖ Deen admits. Green walls, botanical prints and nature-inspired drapes and hanging pendant make the point. The base of the round pedestal table was inspired by a turned vase. ABOVE. Storing pots and pans in the open and mixing light and dark wood finishes create a casual look. So does a counter-height eating table with shelf and baskets that Deen recommends for ―potatoes, onions, salt, pepper or whatever‖.

Settees offer a way to add comfort and mix things up a bit. Mixed with accent chairs, the look is casual, personal and slightly eclectic.

“I just love furniture pieces that look one-of-a-kind. Also pieces you can drag from one room to another!”

My knees are shot from my cheerleading days! I had things that I wanted to use, but I was not going to get down on my hands and knees and pull everything out of my cabinet to get to them! All of my dishes, everything that I love, is displayed in this dish pantry and I just walk in and get things off the shelf. Do you have a favorite piece in your furniture collection? One of my favorite pieces is the Bag Lady cabinet – my goodness, with all those little drawers. The grand thing is that it can go from foyer to dining room to kitchen to living room to bedroom to bathroom. I love furniture that‘s utilitarian. I like to be to able to drag it from one room to another! Another of my favorite, favorite pieces is the big square coffee table that turns into an eating table. Here in Savannah we have a lot of carriage houses. For students living in these smaller places – it can serve as a dining room table or even a computer desk.

The Savannah poster bed with scalloped headboard and twisted posts adds elegance to a bedroom. The bed comes with low post options for the headboard or footboard. With turned legs and stretchers, a bench at the end of the bed adds more sophistication.

There‘s another table I love, love, love, too - the taller, square one with a shelf underneath. You can slip your flower arrangement under there when you‘re eating, or store your napkins, salt, pepper or sacks of potatoes and onions. I don‘t refrigerate my potatoes or my onions; they turn sweet on you. So I always need an extra place to throw a basket! What would you say is similar about your cooking style and your home style? My food is very, very unpretentious; it‘s just honest, cooking like momma did. You know, I‘m not a chef. I‘ve never been to school. I graduated Summa Cum Later from Granny‘s Paula‘s kitchen it‘s the only education I have. You know... it‘s funny, some women come to me and say I cook like you but I’m a better cook than you. I say, honey, I don‘t doubt that at all! I just happen to make my living off of my grandma‘s

A beach-inspired stripe looks sophisticated with a mix of deep brown and off-white hues. Bolster cushions feature an elegant script fabric with an Old World script. A sisal rug complements a casual coffee table with slat base, the round end table adds a mix-and-match flavor.

“The designs are inspired by favorite pieces I collected over the years; some of them from yard sales and junk shops!” cooking! You know, wonderful memories are made in the kitchen. We all remember the time we lived in this totally safe and secure world. Our feet were under our grandmother‘s table and we knew nothing could hurt us. With my food and my furniture, I hope to bring people back to that place. This isn‘t squirly whirly, twirly furniture. It‘s honest and uncomplicated – just like my cooking. How important is a formal dining room to you? Some new homes are doing away with them. I‘ve tangled with that. Michael and I designed this huge living room – it

looks like a basketball court. I don‘t know what we were thinking! There are fireplaces at each end. On one end, I have two round tables; that‘s my dining room end. In my kitchen, I have my farmhouse table, but it was going to be my workspace, not for eating. Do you know we have not had a meal in our dining room yet! When I cooked our first meal, Michael and I said, ok, well, we‘ll just drag two chairs in here and we ate in our kitchen. A few nights later, Barry, my agent was here. I said ok, well, we‘ll just bring in one more chair. I now have eight chairs around my kitchen table! I‘ve had bankers here from New York and you know, every time I feed them around the table in my little old kitchen! I like the fact that the dining room is there, for showers and parties and things like that. But for eating, give me that kitchen.

With large louvered doors and handy drawers and shelves, this utility cabinet is designed to for any room in the house.

APR 2011

Do you think the role of our homes is changing in these tough economic times? I think people are nesting more. Families are reconnecting with each other and figuring out ways to have fun without leaving the house. Of course, that‘s always been my style. When I was raising my children, we didn‘t have money to go out to eat. We‘d have

friends over and we‘d have the best times. My goodness, we didn‘t know we were as poor as that church mouse. Is there something we all can do to improve our homes without spending a lot of money? I‘d say give thought to the color palette for your home. If you have a good palette, your can buy yourself four pillows and give your whole house a fresh, new look. You can mix and match and drag from one room to another to give your house a facelift without spending a lot.

entertaining is the graciousness of the host. Do you have a favorite season to cook? Michael has this grand outdoor kitchen, but my favorite time to cook is in the fall – when it‘s crisp out there. Nothing makes me happier than to put on a pot of collards and stink up the neighborhood. Since you like to collect your favorite things over time, we just have to ask— what’s the most recent thing you added to home? I just hung engravings of two crows in my bedroom. They‘re magnificent. But my designer, Carolyn Hultman, she slipped in here and got my cheerleading uniform from 1965 and she framed it – that‘s my most favorite piece.

Speaking of color palettes, how would you describe yours? If people came into my house, they‘d say oh gosh, girl, your favorite color is green. I refer to my favorite colors as God‘s colors - the blues, the greens. And your favorite way to entertain? Very casually. Ours is a blended family and it has grown, so in my dining room, we built a big banquette that separates our living and dining room. It has drawers, a refrigerator and freezer so I can set up a buffet. But you know, you can have a grand party without spending a lot of money. Some of my most beautiful flower arrangements; every drop came from my yard! We have an abundance of oyster shells here and for my class reunion here recently, we painted the backs of them gold and served hot nuts in them. The most important thing about

A laid-back, louvered day bed (with storage drawers invites a lazy afternoon nap.
