Pierre Bergian – Nuages Oil on canvas, 59 x 50 cm

2

Pierre Bergian Personal: Belgian artist -‐ 1965, born in Bruges Worked as archaeologist, writer and publisher on design, antiques and architecture. His articles appeared in numerous international magazines.

Inspired by: His combined fascination for architectural components, space and structure. Rooms and spaces that are m ostly empty, bar a small selection of furnishings and objects. Empty and dark, without artificial light, these buildings were shrouded in an air of the mysterious, further inspiring the interest of the artist. Through his work, he aims to discover more about the atmosphere of similar environments. These vacant rooms take on an almost surreal form. The absence of visual distraction causes us to look closer and also highlights what is to be seen. The works have one thing in common; they are unanimously devoid of people. But Bergian is playing with his audience. Is the inhabitant just left or long gone, will he return, … Al we know is that for now – we are given a view into their habitat. All tough desolate the interior seems in no need for people. The interior or landscape is the focus, both as space and as an object. Again, the inspiration partly comes from his background as an art historian. His works could be described as “still lives”. Based on the 17th century Dutch and Flemish painters how were known for their use of natural light and it’s effect on the room and pieces that are carefully placed in it. 1 -‐ Versailles, oil on panel, 52 x 62 cm 2 -‐ Palazzo Mori in Venice, oil on panel, 80 x 98 cm 3 – L’echaffaudage à Versailles, oil on panel, 78 x 92cm

Inspired by:

He developed an original and personal style. Starting from photographs and video stills he creates his own adaptation by transforming the overall feeling and focus. The abstract touch that he gives his work opens up a window of opportunity for his public, to make their own version of the story. Although painted rather vaguely, the subjects stay strong, sharp and outspoken. 1 – KV Blauwvoet, mixed media 6 0x 90cm 2 – Girl & Cat N01 -‐ mixed media 100 x 150 cm 3 – Bergen Belsen, m ixed media, 40 x 50 cm

Pierre Imhof – Grand W arp & Weft Mixed media on canvas 175 x 175xm

12

Pierre Imhof Personal: Pierre Imhof was born in 1956, in Fribourg, Switzerland. At the age of twenty-two he moved briefly to Zurich before leaving for London in 1979. In 1983 he began his studies in painting and sculpture at Middlesex University, graduating in 1986.

Inspiration: After selling most of the paintings in his graduation show, he has managed since then to work more or less full-time in the studio. He had his first solo exhibition in Zurich, 6 months after leaving college. In the first few years after college, Imhof produced figurative works in oils, though even in those days an interest in repetitive patterns was evident in checkerboards and tiled floors that figured prominently in them. In January 1990, Imhof moved resolutely away from figurative work. In 1996 came a series called Present, large acrylics on canvas, abstract and highly colored, which were then covered with tissue paper and thin white paint to leave the fragmentary ghost of an image showing through.
