The Benefits of Counselling

Counselling, sometimes called Talking Therapy, involves talking with a trained therapist to explore thoughts and feelings that you may have buried or ignored. Many of us can find it difficult to voice our innermost thoughts and feelings, but bottling up our emotions can lead to depression, anxiety, stress and illness. Talking to a therapist gives you a safe space to open up about things you may be struggling with and find ways to move forward.

Counselling can help you recognise unhelpful patterns of behaviour and explore ways to change them. It can help you learn new skills for building healthier relationships. A trained counsellor will listen without any judgement and help you explore your problems and issues practically, and at your own pace - whether you are feeling anger, guilt, sadness, grief, resentment or any other difficult emotion. • Let go of emotions that you’ve bottled up for a long time

• See your issues from a new and different perspective

• Build healthier relationships

• Learn how to cope when you feel anxious or depressed

• Feel less alone or isolated

• Build confidence and self esteem

• Cope better with everyday life, feeling like a weight has been lifted

Sometimes it is difficult to talk to friends or family, you don’t want to upset them, or they may be part of the problem. Perhaps it feels embarrassing to talk to people close to you. Talking to a counsellor who is trained to listen and who won’t judge you, gives you the freedom to talk about things you may have kept inside, perhaps for a long time. This helps you to feel less alone and isolated.

I believe that it is important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor, and most offer a free initial consultation so you can meet and talk about how they can help you. Once you feel comfortable with your therapist, counselling can help you feel understood, valued and appreciated for who you are. Finally, and most importantly, counselling helps you find your sense of self and some inner peace.
