September 21 & 22, 28 & 29 Insight is an open studio event celebrating the artistic talents of North and North East Lincolnshire. Over two weekends in September artists will open their doors to the public, making themselves available to explain and demonstrate the processes involved in developing their work. There will be opportunity to view and perhaps purchase or commission original paintings, prints, textiles, sculpture, jewellery and glass. This is the 13th year that Insight has run promoting Northern
Insight 2013 would not be possible without the generous support of::
Lincolnshire’s visual arts and craft practitioners. Inside this booklet are the details of 46 artists and 11 galleries www.insightopenstudios.org.uk and arts organisations that are taking part. Clay is a uniquely tactile and malleable material and my lifelong fascination with it lies primarily in its versatile properties and its universal functions. I have over the years acquired a multitude of diverse artistic skills, gaining recognition internationally as an accomplished Potter, Ceramic Artist and Sculptor. I am also a Qualified Teacher, Web Designer, Flash Digital Artist. I have a keen interest in CAD, am level 3 qualified in 3D solid modelling. I
love it - especially Cinema 4D. But, my passion working in clay will never leave me. I produce a variety of unique pottery figurines and collectables, both functional and decorative, serving customers both here in the UK and abroad, mainly USA and Canada, and as far away as Japan. My hand made ceramics have been featured in many publications and magazines such as ‘Collect It’, ‘Art and Antiques’, ‘The Journal’, ‘Piebirds Unlimited’ and more recently The Bonsai Potters Book printed in 6 different languages. My current work incorporates both architectural forms and the androgynous human body. Subject matter which, in the main, stems from a long term interest in life study. Work that is often themed, painted or drawn within a narrative context. Large mixed media drawings that relate to the manufacturing of both the physical and the structural – how it relates to now, particularly in times of conflict when people are often left disabled or injured through no fault of their own.

I have recently been inspired by family and relationships; how people we know effect and influence our lives and the paths we take, making connections with previous generations. There are often stories, poems and personal fragments of things that accompany my work. Painting on unusual surfaces raises its own challenges particularly when painting realistically but it also gives us an opportunity to view the subject matter differently and give us time for our own reflections.

I am working in preparation for a solo show to be held at the Caistor Arts Centre in Feb 2014. The works are based on a visit there, working from recollection and recorded images of haunting derelict premises once housing what were believed to be the “mad or insane� of the area. The paintings all worked in oil are ambiguous yet retain a tension which I believe directly relates to the subject matter.

Each piece is individual and crafted by hand in my workshop. My aims are to produce pieces which are practical and elegantly proportioned whilst maintaining an honesty in the manner of their construction. The pieces are finished with a hand blended polish of Beeswax, Linseed and Tung oil in order to bring out the true colour of the materials used.

The exhibition will run from 21st – 29th September at Grimsby Minster.
Vestiges of Spirituality is a multimedia installation created by film-maker (Annabel McCourt), two composers (David Power and David Lancaster) and a visual artist (Linda Ingham). It is designed to be displayed in churches and is conceived so that it “works with” the churches as opposed to just happening to be in them. One might say that the church itself is the fifth artist in the installation. Its starting point for doing this is that churches tend to contain large and beautiful open spaces that are designed for contemplation. They also contain small, separate spaces

I like to paint traditional landscape views as well as contemporary subjects including figure drawing, portraits, flowers and still life. I paint in pastel, acrylic, oil, ink, charcoal and watercolour. Watercolour, with its brilliant pigment and translucent washes glowing on fresh white paper is the most appealing medium to work in; however, it is the most difficult
medium to master. Nevertheless, I am hooked and get lots of enjoyment trying to catch the scene in front of me in watercolour.

The Print Room at the Ropewalk and the encouragement of tutor Tim Needham have been the starting point for many experiments and successes in printmaking and while many of us now have our own presses and studios we still see The Ropewalk as our centre.

However, there is a common thread running through much of my work: nature, a constant source of inspiration. “Informed by the organic� is a body of abstract work that was produced to exhibit for my degree show. It is an installation of ripped paper, and sculptures made from wire and fleece reminiscent of living forms: from single cells, viruses, DNA, systems of the human body, to living creatures and
plants; from the simple building blocks of life to complex structures. Work from this will be displayed alongside earlier and later pieces. New to Insight My creations involve working with metals/ceramics / fuse glass/ water colour/acrylic paintings. My inspiration in all I do is taken from the flora and fauna of the British Isles. Metal Sculptures are designed for the garden and are of birds and flowers. I am at this present time experimenting with Kinetic pieces in stainless steel.
