The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!
The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.

welcome
Summer should arrive shortly
I
always have in my mind that July to September is a quiet time for The Ropewalk. Ropery Hall closes its doors over the summer and we have the annual open exhibition in all galleries which lasts for three months. Then as discussions about what to put is this quarter’s Ropewalk Magazine begin - well, there’s the children’s summer activities or how about something on the free open air theatre we programme? Laura has some new craft makers coming up, The Ropewalk is contributing to the Big Sky Festival, there’s September’s films and music to go in…… enough, it’s full! Thank you to everyone who responded to our open meeting at the end of March. We have been flooded with great ideas which we are ticking off one by one. Details of our progress will be fed back
through the Newstrings section of the website. Following the meeting we have also had an upsurge in people becoming members and patrons, again we thank you for that. Let’s hope we get some warmer weather this year and perhaps I will bump into to you at Snake Strings in St. Mary’s Church or Treasure Island in Baysgarth Park. Whatever the weather you are guaranteed a warm welcome at The Ropewalk. Enjoy your summer Liz Managing Director Cover image: Teapot by Kevin De Choisy

lison Read has always been a country girl at heart and after completing her degree at Newcastle University she moved back to Lincolnshire to focus on her printmaking. Having been brought up on a farm, Alison’s has always had a preoccupation with animals and this has translated through to her work. Her prints, which are full of wit and humour, capture the character of the animals. “Although I love all forms of printmaking, my current favourite is the woodcut, and I attack my plates quite brutally at times,” says Alison. “I am always surprised at how simple they are; just a few lines to denote the essentials. I like
the hands-on nature of producing a plate and its immediacy. I don’t keep highly detailed sketchbooks etc as I use the plate rather than paper to work out ideas. I think this is why my images are quirky, if I plan too much I find this is often lost” Also available to buy from the Craft Gallery are Alison’s greetings cards and a range of cotton bags and tea towels all printed with her designs. Alison’s work is on display in the Hall-Mark Room from August 1 - 28

indsay has a passion for history and Scottish culture. While researching her family history she discovered that her ancestors were mostly fishermen from east coast Fife. She’s found many poems and stories about fishing and the fishing way of life and it is these stories that have inspired her collection. She uses a hammer to texture the fish so when they catch the light it gives the impression of shining fish scales. She also likes to use cold enamel on some of her fish pieces to add colour

The Romantic Landscape
T
his Ropewalk exhibition of the paintings, drawings and printmaking by artist Rob Moore precedes the major touring exhibition of his work to Hester Gallery Leeds and Dean Clough Galleries in Halifax. The show mainly includes new work made over the past eighteen months since his transformational show at Duckett and Jeffreys Gallery two years ago. Moore provides us with an insight into his particular approach to landscape and places informed by his Yorkshire Wolds environment and more foreign landscapes. These

reflective images however are about places fashioned in the imagination, landscapes that are not mirrors of what he sees but images that insistently define their own reality and lyrical presence. The artist works fluently in producing highly crafted work that is subtle, sometimes quiet, enticing and hugely rewarding for those prepared to immerse themselves in his creative journey. erbyshire potter and long time Ropewalk exhibiter John Wheeldon is our guest curator of this exhibition of new ceramics with the focus on function.
He explains, “When I was asked to curate this exhibition I felt it was an opportunity to assemble a small group of potters who make pots to be used and enjoyed on a daily basis. Good, honest, well made pots can enhance both the look and enjoyment of food and also be reasonably affordable. The potters are all makers of domestic ware who are using traditional forms and techniques in a modern way for today’s market.” The exhibition will feature the work of: Patia Davis; Nigel Lambert; Kevin De Choisy; John Gibson [Denmark] and John Wheeldon New Domestic Pots Gallery One September 15 – October 13

Saturday Classes
W
ith only a short summer break in August, day workshops continue to tempt our patrons with many workshop places being taken within days of becoming available. So popular have been some of these workshops that we have had to book extra dates to cater for the demand On Saturday July 13 there are two workshops, An Introduction to Silversmithing with Diane HigginsLee and Photo Cubism with Simon Vickers. No experience is needed for Diane’s introduction to basic silversmithing. There will be a choice between making a hammered silver ring or a textured heart pendant. If you have time to make the both, there will be an additional charge of £12 for the extra silver used. Either the ring or pendant will make lovely gifts or why not buy the workshop to give as a present?
Chains will be available for purchase on the day (around £10, depending on the chain) and tools will be provided as well as Diane’s techniques and tips. The same day Simon Vickers will be exploring how to use composition and perspective to create cubist collages, combining multiple perspectives into a single image to create striking, photographic works of art using either a DSLR or an iPhone. The autumn programme gets underway on Saturday, September 7, with Jacqueline Warrington leading a workshop on how to make a simple stone set ring making either a silver and/or a copper ring and setting stones in a simple rub-over setting. Summer Music maybe!
A
s regular audience members will testify Ropery Hall is no place to be on a hot summer’s night so for one night only The Ropewalk is moving to St Mary’s Church. We think the church will have just the right atmosphere for Snake Strings in mid July so we hope to see you all there. The first gig of the autumn is the gig that has been twice cancelled due to snow this year, Eddie and the Hot Rods. Baring a freak show storm in mid September the boys will be in Ropery Hall for their much anticipated gig! Formed in 1976 Eddie and the Hot Rods soon made a name for themselves on the pub and club circuit, their hit “Do anything you want to do” (except perform in Barton) was a popular anthem which sticks in the heads of my generation. Mark from mtm starts his autumn programme off with Kelly Joe Phelps. Since his debut album Snake Davis with strings attached “Lead Me On”, came out in 1994, the Pacific Northwest based singer and songwriter has written and performed some of the most compelling slide guitar based music ever recorded. Playing a lap slide in a style that both evoked the sounds of the ancients and pointed towards new possibilities for the instrument, Kelly Joe’s music seemed to originate in another time as he sang with the voice of an old soul, weary with experience, yet excited with all of the prospects that life brings. September concludes with a weekend of Jazz and Folk. The now annual appearance of the Snake Davis Band. Snake and the band get better every year in this highlight of the Ropery Hall calendar.

The Mad Dog Folk and Ropewalk last Saturday of the month folk session introduces songwriter Huw Williams and multi-instrumentalist Maartin Allcock. They first met on a Fairport Convention tour bus in 1995. Huw went on to conquer the British folk scene with his singing partner Tony Williams (no relation) until calling it a day in 2002, since when Huw has been a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4. Maart went freelance in 1997 after leaving Fairport and moved to Snowdonia in 2000. Since then he has continued his session career which now includes over
200 albums from Robert Plant to Beverley Craven, and made a name for himself as a record producer. Now the two have come together with a performance of stories about life on the road, soundchecks and how and why some of the songs were written. An evening of foot tapping tunes and beautiful songs with anecdotes that will both captivate and make you laugh. They will be supported by Neil McSweeney a songwriter from Sheffield. He has two critically acclaimed albums and a recent EP under his belt and has toured with the likes of Richard Hawley.

The play offers a refreshingly different perspective on the much used saying “It’s grim up North” in the play variously described as a hilarious, moving and honest exploration of female friendship. Set in 1991 and from the rugged outpost of Beacon Hill, Chucker and Mucker survey the place they’re proud to call home – Halifax, the town of a hundred trades which is now the best night out in the North. These eloquent, unruly and unlikely heroines, Chucker and Mucker rampage through back streets, Woolworths and their own adolescence and find there is fragility at the heart of the strongest friendship.
Saturday, September 21 sees the return of the Angus and Ross Theatre Company with Holmes and Watson: The Farewell Tour. Before slipping into retirement, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, embark on a farewell tour of the British Isles. This is your final chance to catch Holmes and Watson as they embark on their Farewell Tour. Don’t miss them. It’s elementary!! Both performances start at 7.30pm and tickets to see The Historians cost £8 in advance or £10 on the door while tickets to see Holmes and Watson: The Farewell Tour cost £10 in advance or £12 on the door.
