Exhibitions Workshops Events October - December 2013 The Ropewalk • Barton upon Humber
The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!
The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.
Workshops
The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.
Events
The Craft Gallery continually displays in excess of 200 makers’ work from throughout the country including jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles and a wide selection of artist-made greeting cards. The Hall-Mark Room displays a range of contemporary prints and collectables.

welcome
Time flies by when you’re having fun.
I
t doesn’t seem five minutes since we put our first gig on in Ropery Hall but this is our seventh autumn season. What started as a small programme with a couple of events a month has certainly developed into a rich and diverse menu of quality theatre, music, comedy and film with something for everyone. The folk partnership with Mad Dog Folk is going from strength to strength bringing original gifted musicians to our stage and you will find more than one Radio 4 News Quiz guest in the comedy programme (it’s my ambition to get a full set, other people collect train numbers….) This year we will be working with resident theatre company Duck Egg Theatre to bring two weeks of Peter Pan as a preChristmas show for all the family. Planning permission has just been granted for the extension to Ropery Hall so we are now working to raise the necessary funding to make it a reality. This would mean a huge upgrade in the facilities and the
opportunity to book some acts that have previously eluded us due to our capacity. In the galleries a highlight for me this autumn is the exhibition of ceramics curated by Derbyshire potter John Wheeldon. Running until October 13 New Domestic Pots has more than a few red spots that belong to me, quality work which is difficult to resist. As always there is abundant opportunity for you to get creative with our popular one day classes now being augmented with new evening workshops as well. ST-ART, the children’s art charity that runs out of The Ropewalk, has new classes for young people on in the evening during term times. I look forward to seeing you as the nights draw in and we head to Neverland. Liz Cover image: Lucy Porter

Collection: Christine Cummings
C
hristine Cummings has spent her life surrounded by many and various farm animals and pets so the influences for her work are as obvious as first seems. She has been creating ceramic sculptures for more than 10 years and her unique style and love of the natural world is captured by her beautifully hand crafted pieces. Whether it’s a grazing cow, a scratching chicken or a dog lolloping down the road, inspiration is never far away.
Christine’s portfolio shows her commitment and love for fine art, the finished pieces created using Earthstone hand building clay decorated with porcelain slips or raku fired depending on which it most lends itself to, express her natural ability to realise her research and observation. Christine’s work is on display in the Box Gallery from October 5 - November 3
Sketching is a very important part of her work as Christine studies the subject at great length aiming to capture the creature in simple lines.

jewellery
Featured Jewellers October: Jemma Daniels
Jemma Daniels is an award winning designer maker specialising in the creation of tactile and sculptural, contemporary hollow-ware and tableware using traditional silversmithing techniques as well as a dynamic and interactive range of contemporary jewellery. Her primary jewellery collection, Reflections of Movement, features colourful and elegant gemstones that are allowed to move freely, creating fanciful and playful reflections within each piece.
November: Denise Lawn
Denise Lawn has been designing, making jewellery and teaching for eight years from the Clarise Jewellery School in Leeds West Yorkshire. Her work is mostly inspired by organic material and shapes, preferring natural flowing and twisting lines, creases and folds that have a connection with the natural forms of plants. Working mostly with recycled fine silver, Sterling silver and gold all her pieces are unique, never replicated and truly one of a kind.
December: Elizabeth Terzza
Elizabeth Terzza’s interest and awe for the British countryside are instantly recognisable throughout her collections of handmade, contemporary jewellery. Forever collecting and taking note of her rural surroundings, Elizabeth is drawn to the silhouettes and simplicity in nature, adopting these qualities to create elegant, silver jewellery with an essence of tranquility that rests softly against the skin of the wearer.

Studio artists show their work
S
David Alcock
ince completing his degree David has been employed in cultural learning working with museum and gallery collections. Alongside this he has continued to develop his practice as a painter and now works from his studio at The Ropewalk. His job often informs his artwork through ideas of collecting and memory. David makes playful, chaotic process paintings that emit a tension between the considered and the accidental. They sit on the tipping point between abstraction and representation, influenced by environment and memory. “I’m very interested in collecting accidental and intentional marks which I manipulate and reuse in my paintings. I’m constantly looking for mistakes to happen, an uncontrolled drip, a poorly mixed colour, an unexpected event which can be quoted later. ” This exhibition will feature some of David’s recent paintings made between 2011 and 2013. workshops
ST-ART workshops After a fun-packed month of activities in August, ST-ART turns its attention to more craft-based activities for a series of evening workshops running until December at The Ropewalk and for a limited time at South Ferriby Village Hall. Held on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, the Tuesday craft sessions at The Ropewalk are aimed at young people aged between eight and 12 years old while the Wednesday specialist art sessions are for those aged between 13 and 19 years. Cuckoo clocks, leather plaited bracelets and miniature Christmas trees are just some of the crafts which will be made on Tuesday evenings while Wednesday evenings
see consecutive workshops, each lasting four weeks, dedicated to making clay models, tactile books and printing techniques along with two December workshops with a festive theme. At South Ferriby a four week course beginning on September 10 sees Diane Higgins-Lee leading a specialist art course on jewellery making, for those between 13 and 19 years. The Tuesday craft sessions run between 7pm and 8.30pm while the Tuesday and Wednesday specialist art courses run between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Full details of all these activities, including the prices, can be found on www.st-art.co.uk
Lantern Parade Winter Wonderland is the theme of this year’s Barton Christmas Festival Lantern Parade. The workshops preparing for this magical evening are being held from Monday, October 21 to Friday, October 25, at The Ropewalk and this year organiser Janine Knight promises lanterns depicting amongst other things the March of the Penguins, a winter sleigh and polar bears – all using willow and tissue.
The workshops are suitable for all ages and adults are especially welcome to come along and help with their children’s lantern making. The Christmas Festival takes place this year on Saturday, November 30, with the Lantern Parade leaving The Ropewalk at 5pm.
A full day workshop, costing £5 per day, runs from 10am to 3pm while half-day workshops, costing £2 each, run from 10am to 12 noon or 1pm to 3pm. If those taking part want to make individual lanterns they must commit to attending one and half days but not necessarily consecutive.

Autumn Highlights
D
ay Workshops at The Ropewalk continue to be oversubscribed and it seems to be very much a case of don’t wait too long or you may be disappointed although there are some places left in our autumn programme. On Friday, October 11 Diane Higgins-Lee returns with her basic Introduction to Silversmithing where patrons can make either a hammered silver ring or a textured heart pendant – both if you have the time. Either of these pieces would make a lovely gift!
On Saturday, November 23, Henrietta Corbett leads an Etched Lino and Acetate Drawing workshop. This printmaking course uses a Caustic Soda mixture to etch into lino plate, creating a textured and fairly painterly design. An acetate layer is then scratched and drawn with a spike and printed over the Lino print to add more detail. Full details of these workshops, including the cost and additional charges for materials, can be found on www.the-ropewalk.co.uk
Yara Sekiguchi returns on Saturday, October 26 with her Silk Painting workshop, Outline with Gutta. The workshop will cover the gutta (resist) outline technique using 100% pure silk and specialised French dyes. A design of your choice will be achieved using the Gutta technique. Suitable for beginners, the technique used will be explained step by step in a very relaxed and fun way – and at the end of the day you will take home a unique piece of art.

Shoving a quart into a pint pot!
T
here are so many fantastic musicians lined up to take to the Ropery Hall stage this autumn I cannot possibly do them all justice on these two pages. The full details are on our website www. the-ropewalk.co.uk and they are all listed below but here is a whistle stop tour.
Every year or so world music throws up a new global star in the making and 2013 looks like being Tuerag guitar genius Omara “Bombino” Moctar’s year. Bombino and his band are stunning live, so lovers of guitar and blues music should get in the queue with world music fans for one of the gigs of the season. Also we have welcome returns from John Smith, Glenn Tilbrook and The Suspicions. Please note this year the Suspicions will be performing for two nights, one will be a standing gig and the other, due to many requests, will be a seated concert.

John Smith
I am delighted to have been able to book two of the best new outfits on the jazz scene in some time. Roller Trio and Go Go Penguin are both tipped for great things and this double bill is a real coup. Keeping up the interest in music with a difference The Delta Saxophone Quartet will be playing their latest show – Art Decade – with arrangements of instrumentals from David Bowie’s legendary Berlin albums
and Brian Eno’s Music for Airports Part One alongside film based music by Philip Glass, Michael Nyman and Steven Goss.

Mad Dog Folk Mick Harding has once again sniffed out some top folk talent with a double header in October – that works out at just £5 for young star in the making Blair Dunlop and £5 for the endearing Derbyshire duo David Gibb & Elly Lucas. What a bargain! Scottish folk star Ewan McLennan takes the November folk slot. Mick will be attending the UK folk showcase in Bury in October for us to make sure that Ropery Hall has the best contemporary folk acts on the last Saturday of each month.

retelling of a classic story which revels in the wit of Wilde, while borrowing (rather cheekily) from Wodehouse, to create a wicked black comedy that positively fizzes with fun.
But before that, on October 4, there is An Evening with David Nobbs who looks back on 50 years as a writer. The man behind TV series “The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin has written for many leading comedians as well as writing two series of the hit TV show “A Bit of a Do” starring David Jason.
Last year West End Actor James Hyland appeared at Ropery Hall in A Christmas Carol. Now his theatre company Brother Wolf, in association with Harrogate Theatre, presents Fagin’s Last Hour on November 8.
He takes to the stage for the first time to tell the so far untold stories behind a lifetime of comedy writing. On October 19 Rocket Theatre, a company new to Ropery Hall, presents Oscar Wilde’s Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime. This is a hilarious

latest production, The Lost World. Performed on November 22 and 23, the play has been adapted for the stage by Nobby Dimon from the novel by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle. With zany zoologists on a prehistoric plateau, ape -men, madcap balloon rides and a pterodactyl loose in London you might ask yourself how can it be done on stage? You’ll have to come along and see for yourself. The magical world of pantomime comes to Ropery Hall in December with a fresh, modern, musical retelling of Peter Pan thanks to the Duck Egg Theatre Company.
With words by Haley Cox and music by Phil Collingwood, join stroppy teenager Wendy Darling as she takes us into the timeless story of Peter Pan. Throw in a misunderstood kind of Captain Hook, a hot Peter Pan, a rock star Crocodile and a sprinkle of fairy dust (and an awesome rock/pop soundtrack) and you get a sparkling show guaranteed to get your toes tapping. Peter Pan is on stage between December 2 and 7 and again from December 16 to 21 with matinees on both Saturdays. Comedy at Ropery Hall
N
ew to Ropery Hall are Justin Moorhouse and Lucy Porter. Over the last 12 months Justin Moorhouse has become a household name following numerous appearances on TV and radio. This success has been well earned and he has come a long way since the unforgettable tiger face with car spray in Peter Kay’s Paradise Nights. Lucy Porter is always a delight on whatever platform she graces. Familiar from popular TV and radio panel shows such as Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Mock The Week and The Unbelievable Truth she returns to the UK tour circuit, fresh from The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with her best show yet. Back with a vengeance we have Paul Foot. If you missed his show at Ropery Hall two years ago then you missed an event. Not a dry eye in the house as Paul told probably two jokes in two hours. It’s just the way
he does it, surreal, baffling yet side achingly funny. The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre Company are the darlings of everyone including Ropery Hall staff. So much so we would like to book them to appear every season. Always amusing and most definitely not for children these two chaps are clever, rude and wicked in equal measure. To round off the season is my own personal early Christmas present – an evening with Jeremy Hardy. I’m really not that bothered if anyone else buys a ticket I would be just as happy if it were me and my mother in the audience watching our favourite funny man. Jeremy has it all, a quick wit, intelligence, the ability to rant and a way of seeing modern life that makes you question the norm as well as laugh at it. Liz
