Exhibitions Workshops Events September - December 2014 The Ropewalk • Barton upon Humber
The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!
The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.
Workshops
The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.
Events
The Craft Gallery continually displays in excess of 200 makers’ work from throughout the country including jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles and a wide selection of artist-made greeting cards. The Hall-Mark Room displays a range of contemporary prints and collectables.
Ropery Hall is a small community venue with a capacity of around 120 that offers a programme of film, theatre, music and comedy.

Fresh local produce is used to create a wide variety of mainly vegetarian snacks and light lunches. A large selection of delicious freshly made cakes, coffees and organic juices are also available.
The building also houses a small Museum, Artist Studios, meeting rooms for hire and bespoke picture framing service.

Featured Jewellers
September Elin Mair Based in her garden shed, designer-maker Elin creates contemporary jewellery made from Precious Metal Clay. Established since 2011 her work is now sold in selected independent shops and galleries throughout the country.
October Angela Ibbs Originally from the north-west of England, Angela now lives in South Lincolnshire where she set up her studio. Her original hand cut mosaic jewellery is created from vintage china, iridescent glass and Italian millefiori set into cast pewter.
November Jacqueline Warrington After working for a renowned jewellery designer before going onto college and Sheffield School of Art, Jacqueline set up in business designing and making her own range of jewellery.
December Rebecca Halstead Rebecca combines sterling silver with high quality semi-precious stones and pearls creating elegant, often flamboyant pieces of jewellery which are comfortable to wear yet have a strong contemporary feel.

Box Gallery: Mazekoze
Makiko Hastings – Mazekoze “Mazekoze” is a series of tableware, suggesting mixing up different sizes, shapes and colours to create your own patterns on the table, hinting a sense of joy with everyday food that is strongly based on Makiko’s cultural background. Following her philosophy of hand-made, Makiko uses a traditional method of glaze making utilising only natural materials without any commercial colorants. A number of tests and experiments developed the unique chalky colours and textures that soften the user’s eyes and hands. Born in Japan, Makiko has lived in England since 1997. Although Makiko first studied ceramics in 2000, she took a totally different career path up until 2009 when she returned to clay. She gained First Class Honours Degree in Applied Creative Design at Harrogate College in 2012 and currently works from her home studio, as well as running a workshop at her local art centre for people with special needs. You can see Makiko’s work in the Box Gallery from October 4 – November 2.

In cultures both ancient and modern around the globe, rivers and seas can be symbols for: rites of passage, crossing over, carrier of messengers, site of ritual, a life giver and taker, divider of worlds and home to a multitude of gods, demons and fantastic creatures.”

atersmeet is a series of abstract works linked by the theme of water’s movement and passage from rain to river to estuary and sea, reflecting on the ultimate fragility of our relationship with water - always in flux, a constant process of renewal and erosion.

his selling exhibition of selected work by members of the Northern Potters Association represents the very best of studio ceramics from the North of England. It will feature around 25 different potters and include both functional and sculptural pieces with a mix of decorative and fine art pottery.

Fusion
his exhibition brings together a collection of contemporary artists with bespoke, handmade lighting at the heart of their practice. Curated by Craft Gallery Coordinator Laura McNair it features six artists who make a range of designer lighting from handmade shades in textile and ceramic, to turned wooden lamp bases and sculptural floor lights.

Colin Chetwell
ichael Thacker ARBS is a stone mason who works full time at Lincoln Cathedral and is also a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors. The professional skills that he has acquired over the years have given him a deep knowledge and affinity of the technical side of the stone that he works so beautifully with. The architectural influence of his working environment is apparent in his beautiful geometric sculptures, the principles of devices such as pediments and archways shine through. Michael also uses natural forms as one of his primary references, seedpods, shells, fossils and plant buds. The idea that a form develops and grows from within a hard casing to burst forth and reveal a new appearance is paramount to his thought process. Unbalancing the original and juxtaposing taut polished geometric forms against roughly textured organic shapes that emerge from within.

Needle Felting Fiona Frances will be leading her first workshop at The Ropewalk on Saturday, October 18. Fiona, who works under the name of Fi Oberon, will be exploring the craft of needle felting for beginners and intermediates covering the basics with a wealth of hints and tips to expand skills and showing how to create a charming animal friend leading to armatures techniques and facial details to add character and wit. Fiona is noted for her needle felted Fables Collection celebrating Yorkshire’s proud textile history which she weaves through with narratives from Aesop’s Fables creating larger than life characters including Fox, Hare, Crow, Lamb, Owl, Hen and Mouse, positioning them in situations which explore the connections between these characters and the history of Yorkshire. The day long workshop, which runs from 10.30am until 4.30pm, costs September October November

Lantern making Monday 27th October – Friday 31st October 10 – 3pm Make your lantern for the annual Barton Lantern Parade as part of Barton Christmas Festival, sponsored by Barton Town Council. All lanterns this year will have a horror theme so bring your ideas
and some old clothes as it can get messy. You will need one and a half days to make your own lantern, or stay and help the artists on some much larger horror lanterns. All lanterns must remain at The Ropewalk until the parade on Saturday 29th November; we meet at 4pm and set off at 5pm. Suitable for families full day £5 (bring a packed lunch) £3 half day (10 – 12pm) It is free to join the parade, so please bring family and friends. Lempen Puppet Theatre Company presents Little Frankenstein Thursday 30th October 2pm A little horror for little horrors! Semi famous puppeteer Frank Stein has had enough with his badly made puppets. They stop him from achieving his great potential as a performer. Taking inspiration from the scientist Dr Frankenstein, and with the help of the audience he creates a new real live puppet that is destined to change this life forever! Suitable for children age 5+ and their families £4 adults £3 children.

Getting in tune
T
here is no reason to stay in this season, live music a plenty is on offer. There are lots of old favourites to choose from with three helpings of Snake Davis in his different guises of the Snake Davis Band, Snake Strings and The Suspicions. In September we welcome the return of Beverley Craven and the music institution that is John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett who come to Ropery Hall armed with a surreal sense of humour and a bucket-load of top songs.

In October we’re delighted that acoustic duo China Crisis will be here at Ropery Hall. The same month we welcome, in association with Root Music and Band on the Wall, the Grammy Award winning pianist Bill Laurance with the Bill Laurance Project and Strings. This rare date, in a very short tour, supports the release of Laurance’s acclaimed debut solo album, Flint. November sees a performance by outstanding guitarists John Etheridge and special guest Kit Holmes which promises an uplifting evening of: blues, folk, jazz, African grooves and much more. The Ropewalk and Mad Dog Folk continue with folk nights on the last Saturday of the month with Sam Sweeney’s tale of his violin, Made in the Great War, in September, the Lucy Ward Band in October and Blackbeard’s Tea Party in November. These are coupled with a performance by Belshazzar’s Feast as a seasonal treat in December. mtm promotions offers return gigs from the Cambridge based duo

Oct 10 Ian McMillan and Ian Beesley Magic Lantern Tales 8pm £13/£15otd Using a real magic lantern projector, poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan and documentary photographer Ian Beesley tell a story of the First World War from the point of view of men who survived it and lived on to old age and a changing world. Here too are the tales of women who worked in the factories that oiled the wheels of war. We often view war as a series of huge historical sweeps and this show reminds us that war is made by people who each have their own narrative of what happened. The two Ians also explore the culture of magic lantern shows - from the natural world to engineering and from small disasters to Empire.
Sat 15 Northern Accent, a new series of literature events, presents The100 Years’ War - A Poetry in Performance Show 7.30pm £10£12otd The chaos and cruelty of war has inspired wonderful poetry. The Hundred Years’ War is a new poetrytheatre piece that uses forty poems composed around war from 1914 to 2013 as the basis for a deeply moving portrayal of our lives under fire. Three performers, live and recorded music and striking images are all combined to create a heartwrenching drama whose every word is charged with poetry. This piece is a partnership between Bloodaxe Books, Midland Creative Projects and the Belgrade Theatre Coventry and follows their acclaimed show Being Human, described as “Pioneering work… an amazing theatrical experience.”

ovember sees the welcome return of North Country Theatre, performing J L Carr’s A Month in the Country. North Country Theatre created the first stage adaptation in 2002 and are touring the production, which sees two men, an artist and an archaeologist, recently released from the horrors of the trenches find themselves working side by side in a North Yorkshire village. What they slowly uncover is an ancient village mystery, hidden passions and the healing power of a month in the country. Away from World War One, October sees Ropery Hall continuing its love affair with Oscar Wilde with
Gareth Logan’s dramatization of De Profundis. Spend an hour with a chastened – but still hilarious – Oscar Wilde in his prison cell and see into his astonishingly brilliant mind and beautiful, bruised soul with his exquisitely-beautiful letter, written from Reading gaol while serving two years hard labour for gross indecency, to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. James Hyland returns in November with The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde which combines edgeof-your-seat thrills with stunning physical theatre as Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “bogey tale” is brought chillingly to life in this award-winning one-man show.

Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle: Made in the Great War In September Sam Sweeney returns to the venue with the poignant story of the fiddle he acquired in 2009 but which had been made, but never finished , by a Leeds luthier who was killed during the battle of Messines Ridge in 1917. The violin was finally finished in 2007 and bought by Sam two years later. Discovery of the history behind the fiddle has inspired Sam to create a multi-media performance telling the incredible story of the fiddle. Collaborating with award-winning story-teller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band mate Paul Sartin and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron, as well as Bellowhead lighting designer Emma Thompson who has developed set, projections and lighting for the show.
Drifters: with live score by Jason Singh Originally commissioned by Manchester’s Cornerhouse, this special event features vocal sculpture, beatboxer and sound artist Jason Singh performing a live score to John Grierson’s acclaimed 1929 silent film Drifters. Using techniques of pre-recorded vocal sequences, live vocal processing and sampling, Jason will create a sonic backdrop of ambient textures, experimental atmospheres and rhythms created solely by the use of the voice to accompany the film. John Grierson was an influential Scottish documentary filmmaker, often considered the father of British documentary. Premiering in London alongside Battleship Potemkin in 1929, Drifters follows North Sea herring fisherman through their dramatic daily routines.

Comedy at Ropery Hall Writing this in the heat of a July afternoon it is hard to think about cold nights drawing in but here I am looking at the Ropery Hall autumn comedy programme. Every year I think it’s the strongest line up yet and looking at this year’s offer I get the same feeling. Henning Wehn now fills much larger venues than ours but he is starting his tour with a warm up show here which predictably has sold out before going to print. If you missed out on Henning’s appearance this year make sure you follow our Facebook page or join our email mailing list to be the first to know what’s on. So what should you choose to buy tickets for? My personal recommendation is that you cannot miss Marcus Brigstocke - live he is a real treat. Robin Ince is an unpredicatable genius who can certainly stimulate your grey matter while Hardeep Singh Kohli is a familiar face on TV and radio but a first for Ropery Hall. But if you can only afford one ticket make sure it is to see Ian D Montfort. I first heard Ian on a Radio 2 show as I was driving back late one night from a meeting and I made a point of going to see him live and instantly became a fan. The only warning I would give is that if you believe in psychics this show is not for you. If you don’t and you fancy a hilarious night out – get it booked! In addition to being a regular voice on BBC Radio 4, Hardeep has also been seen on television shows ranging from Question Time and This Week to The One Show and Celebrity Masterchef. Join Hardeep as he offers his take on life, love and finding romance in middle age.

the ropewalk Ropery Hall
The Venue is a small community venue with a capacity of around 120. For small music nights seating is cabaret-style; for all other performances it is theatre-style and seating is not numbered. Please ensure that you arrive in good time if you wish to be seated together. There is a fully licenced bar at all performances. Doors open an hour before the start of performances.

Tickets are available: In Person at The Ropewalk. Open 7 days a week 10am - 5pm (4pm Sundays). By Telephone. Reserve your tickets for 5 days before collection or pay by credit or debit card. (An additional charge of £2 is applied) Online at www.roperyhall.co.uk
Directions
We are well signposted from the A15. Just follow the brown signs... Exit the A15 at J.3 and take the A1077 into Barton (Ferriby Road). Turn left at mini roundabout at the bottom of the hill and follow the road round to the next mini roundabout and turn left again. Follow the one-way system through Castledyke West and get in the left-hand lane. Turn left at the junction opposite the railway station, then take the first right off Waterside Road onto Maltkiln Road. For The Ropewalk Galleries turn left into Tesco’s car park where you will find us in the far left corner. There is ample free car parking adjacent to the building. For Ropery Hall, follow the road round to the Waters’ Edge park gates and then left into the car park. Please park at the end of the car park nearest Ropery Hall then walk to the first set of doors at the side of the building. For Sat Nav users please input DN18 5JR which will lead you straight to Waters’ Edge Car Park.
