The Ropewalk • Barton upon Humber May - August 2017
The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!
The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.
The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.
Ropery Hall is a small community venue with a capacity of around 120 that offers a programme of film, theatre, music and comedy.

E
verything is greening up and the days are drawing out as I write heralding the start of spring. As the seasons change so does the focus of The Ropewalk. Evenings in Ropery Hall run down as we look forward to the 20th Barton Arts Festival, performances in Baysgarth Park and new exhibitions and workshops. After many customer requests Caroline and her team have agreed to extend the hours of the Ropery Coffee Shop on Fridays. From 2nd June you will be able to order food from 11.30am until 7.15pm. The daytime menu will be available with a few added specials so if you are out for a walk and want an early tea or a very late lunch pop in and see us. We are also importing sunshine in 2017 as an exhibition of the work of eight printmakers from Honolulu opens in June. The exhibition will bring the beach to Barton, although on the downside, it may give Richard and Tim the notion that they should be wearing shorts; let’s hope they stop at Hawaiian shirts for the preview on June 17! Ropewalk gardener and cartoonist Twink Addison continues to delight us with her monthly view of The Ropewalk in cartoon form. If you haven’t discovered it yet, have a look on the button tin section of www.the-ropewalk. co.uk where the full archive of cartoons is kept. I will see you in The Ropewalk galleries, listening to Clare Teal at Joseph Wright Hall or having a picnic in the park watching open air theatre no doubt. I hope you have a summer full of culture; there’s plenty of it about you know! Liz Cover image: Tom Allen

Featured Jewellers
May – John Moore Winner of The Goldsmiths’ Company Award 2016, artist John Moore is known for his distinctive designs, fluid movement and use of colour. Materials are chosen for their unique properties and engineered into new forms that pay homage to the beauty he sees in nature. With a broad approach his creations vary from smaller, every-day collections to larger sculptural pieces made for special exhibitions or commissioned for private/public collections.
June - Justine Nettleton Justine has specialised in painting for the past 30 years but has only recently started experimenting with her jewellery. She enjoys using the enamelling process as it allows her to explore colour and mark making. She uses texturing tools on the copper shapes and then applies vitreous enamel, as well as enamel paints and simple pencil markings to create her current collection.
July - Janet Yeun Yau Janet Yeun Yau is a British maker producing jewellery under her brand name Yeun Jewellery. She creates distinctive contemporary designs from her home studio in Harrogate. Her pieces are both feminine and timeless and are crafted from precious metals enhanced with freshwater pearls or rich colourful gemstones. The Pollen and Bee Wing designs are inspired to help raise the awareness of their decline and its importance to our environment.
August - Lisa Rothwell Young Lisa’s work is about precision, attention to detail, fine textures, gemstones and deceptively simple finishes. She enjoys the alchemy, age old techniques, processes, stone setting and “construction in miniature”. The lichen collection is inspired by the patterns created by lichen growth and reproduction, on stone and timber. The collection features etching, oxidation, faceted stones and keum bo, in both silver and gold.

Sarah Jenkins Sarah Jenkins has been making ceramics for more than 30 years and is based in a north Essex village where her direct connection to the landscape is very important to her work. “I feel I am on a search, my quarry is elusive, intuition is more helpful in this territory than analysis. A key influence is the land around where I live, where I was born, to which I feel attached. However, although everpresent, sometimes this aspect can be more subliminal or oblique.” Her ceramic work is always hand built and fired several times. She’s currently using simple slips and oxides with scant use of glaze. Box Gallery: Sarah Jenkins -5 August – 3 September
James and Tilla Waters James and Tilla met each other during their apprenticeships to the potter Rupert Spira in Shropshire in the late 1990s and in 2002 they set up their workshop in Carmarthenshire. They both have degrees in Painting (James from The Slade and Tilla from Bath) and value that background for the greater understanding of form, colour and materials it has given them in making pots. They believe passionately in the importance of functionality; simply being hand-made is not enough but when an object is well made and a joy to use it can become a cherished possession and make an enriching contribution to daily life. Alice Fox Alice Fox presents a collection of Findings; objects that respond to places and landscapes where she has walked. The objects, both altered found items and constructed forms, incorporate hand stitch, weave, natural staining and gathered materials. The title Findings refers to two different definitions: the action of finding someone or something; and information discovered as the result of an inquiry or investigation. Alice’s practice brings together recording, collecting and interaction with the landscape. She is fascinated by the detail of organic things and her thoughtful work celebrates and carries an essence of what she experiences in the natural world. Her background in physical geography and nature conservation underpins her artistic practice.
“Ka Piko” This exhibition features a group of 8 printmakers from Hawaii. “Though “piko” in Hawaiian means belly button or navel, it also has many other connotations. It can refer to the centre/balance or the creative source. It would imply that Hawaii is the creative source or centre of the Pacific… a gathering place, a mix of cultures from many other island nations. This is reflected in our imagery and approach to art.” David Smith.

John D Petty “After more than thirty years working in the graphics and the design-teaching businesses, I returned to Hull where I re-discovered the East Riding and, more particularly, the River Humber; my attachment to the area is, it seems, much stronger than I had realised. Since then I have occupied myself in rediscovering and revitalising my drawing skills, especially drawing in the Holderness area and along the banks of the Humber. That these small Holderness villages should have churches of such antiquity has long fascinated me. The Holderness Churches drawings are the result of this fascination. These drawings are an attempt to symbolise and represent some of the stories that are held within the stones, the bricks and the cobbles of these buildings.”
Now and Then Spurn Point provides the inspiration for a body of work by husband and wife team Madeline and Martin Pick. The couple have worked on the project over the past few years exploring the evocative mystery of Spurn and witnessing dramatic changes at the sand spit as time and tide continue to erode and reshape its landscape. Madeline, working primarily with paint and mixed media on canvas, has approached the subject by working and building layers of texture and meaning into her pieces. “You respond at many levels to Spurn. It arouses emotions as you consider the lives lived and the events witnessed and it stimulates memories as you enter the time capsules represented by the prefab buildings and consider the paths of your own life.” Photographer Martin sees Spurn Point as a unique and fascinating landscape. “We are both impressed by its remote beauty and ability to stir memories, bringing them to the surface. We have tried to represent and record our response to place and the interaction of successive generations of people with it.”

Profile: Heather Gatt We welcome artist Heather Gatt back to The Ropewalk on June 3 for her Batik workshop. Heather’s batik wax-resist paintings explore the effects of light, especially on water. She begins by sketching onto finest quality cotton fabric; she then uses brushes and Indonesian wax pens to paint on hot, molten wax, before applying a wash of cold dye, or immersing the batik in cold dye bath. The wax acts as a resist, repelling the dye and, after successively layering the wax and dye, sometimes up to 20 times, the whole cloth is covered and stiff with wax. The last stage is to remove the wax with boiling water to reveal the image beneath. The results can be surprising, where the dye has seeped into fissures and created interesting patterns and colour blends, or where the wax has cracked to leave marbling effects. Heather was originally self-taught, but has since taken part in workshops and masterclasses with many international
batik artists over the years. She has exhibited in Belgium and the USA, and was awarded The Batik Guild of Great Britain prize in 2005. She now works from her home studio on the East Yorkshire coast near Spurn Head and is a member of East Riding Artists. Her batiks can be seen throughout the year at Coast Gallery, Burniston, Scarborough.

his new series of Sunday night shows featuring Snake Davis and a guest musician has been a runaway success since Sax on Sunday started in January. Chris Parkinson is a Whitby based musician who provides those melodic extras to tunes, helping to give them that magical touch. He’ll be playing concertina, melodeon and piano accordion and he can sing too! He’s worked with Ralph McTell, Steve Tilston, Alistair Russell, Martin Carthy, Mike Harding and many more. We never quite know what to expect from Snakey collaborations but this show will certainly include English, Scottish, and Irish traditional tunes, May 7 May 27 June 4
Tex-Mex, Cajun, jazz and a bit of Bob Dylan. Snake will be on flutes, saxes, whistles and vocals. Johnny Thirkell is one of Britain’s top trumpet and flugelhorn players. Since the 1980s, he has played on literally hundreds of pop, rock, and jazz recordings and has also appeared on 22 No.1 records. He was on at least one album in the UK charts continuously, without a break, for more than 13 years and in 2009 he had two consecutive UK No.1 singles with Pixie Lott. John left school at 16 and worked in a coal mine before heading off to uni then to Leeds College of Music where he and Snake met. They have played together as often as possible ever since.

Henning Wehn: Westphalia is not an Option Join German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn for an evening of Teutonic jolliness at its best. After his last show tackled those wellknown staples of light entertainment that are the British obsession with home ownership and the self-serving nature of most fundraising efforts, this time Henning’s having an unbiased look at immigration. He also wonders, if, generally speaking, people are competent. Luckily in his case this doesn’t matter as either he’s funny or he lives up to a national stereotype. It’s a win-win situation. he Ropewalk team are delighted every year to be involved in the Barton Tourism Partnership project, Performance in the Park. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Baysgarth Park the family theatre performances are supported by Barton Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council and Barton Lions. This year there are four shows on offer. In early July, an adaptation of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy tells the story of Joe who has a lot of reasons to be happy. About a billion of them, in fact as he’s rich, really, really rich with his own bowling alley, his own cinema, even his own butler who is also an orangutan. He’s the wealthiest 12 year old in the land. Yes, Joe has absolutely everything he could possibly want but there’s just one thing he really needs - a friend. Later in July Bash Street Theatre returns to Barton. Bash Street are arguably one of the best physical open air-theatre companies in the UK who tour extensively in Europe and beyond. In August we welcome the ever popular Illyria Theatre with The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen. Beneath the fancy clothes of the tale lies something more meaningful. There are larger-than-life characters, lots and lots to join in with – and an ending that will leave you helpless with laughter! [NB - there is NO nudity in the production. Although one of the actors may be a little chilly…] Finally, at the end of August let the Storytellers Theatre take you on a journey down the yellow brick road. The Wizard of Oz is suitable for young children and their families. All of the shows are free and refreshments will be available at Baysgarth House Museum raising funds for the museum. All you need to do is turn up for 2pm with a chair or rug, a picnic and a friend!
