THE ROPEWALK • BARTON UPON HUMBER September - December 017 1
The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!
The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.
The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.
Ropery Hall is a small community venue with a capacity of between 100 - 150 that offers a programme of film, theatre, music and comedy.

Looking Ahead
I
sn’t it a Chinese Curse “may you live in interesting times”? There are many things going on in the wider world but 2017 for The Ropewalk has certainly been interesting. When Richard and I found out that the building owners Ian and Mark Proudfoot planned to sell the quarter of a mile long shed the Waterside Artists Co-operative has called home for the last 18 years it did put the cat among the pigeons. With less than two years remaining on our lease things didn’t look good. The Board kept it quiet so as not to panic staff and behind the scenes looked at every avenue of support with applications poured over into the early hours. It was with relief as much as excitement that the news was received in June that Arts Council England awarded the Waterside Artists Co-operative £300,000 of the required £450,000 to purchase the building. This success was down to our hard work but also the support of North Lincolnshire Council and we owe them a huge debt of thanks for helping us get close to our goal of owning The Ropewalk. With the deadline of 30 November approaching we still have a considerable sum to raise but wheels are in motion – just keep your fingers crossed for us. If The Waterside Artists Co-operative is successful with the purchase it will mean that the building is secure in trust for future generations, a true community asset. If you would like to help us make this happen we are looking for 90 people to loan The Waterside Artists Co-operative £1,000 for 6 weeks to pay the VAT bill on the sale which we can then claim straight back and repay the loans. If you feel able to help us please talk to me about it, sooner rather than later. Here’s to an uninteresting 2018! I am hoping the only excitement will come from looking at the work on the walls in the Galleries, new recipes from the Coffee Shop or a triumph on the Ropery Hall stage! Featured Jewellers
September - Norman Eames Norman loves to experiment with different types of resin and unusual colour blends to achieve unique flow patterns in the material by alternating layers of colours, interrupted by accents of aluminium, which he then cuts in cross sections and polishes to create a beautiful finish. The natural variations in this process mean that no two pieces are ever the same and ensures that no two people will ever find anyone else wearing the same piece.
October - Katy O’Neil Katy’s jewellery, made from black Vulcan clay or high fired porcelain is both strong and durable in order to give two distinct ranges. The clay is impressed before being decorated with oxides, slips and glazes. This way of impressing marks into clay, using man-made objects such as screws and nails, or parts of salvaged circuit boards, is a reflection of her long-held fascination with the concept of future fossils and how the throw away nature of modern life affects the land.
November - Lignum Jewellers Lignum Jewellers consists of husband and wife team Tom and Lydia. They specialise in wood and silver jewellery. A wide selection of both premium British and exotic hardwoods from sustainable sources worldwide are used, as they strongly believe in protecting the environment. Their aim is to produce a piece of jewellery that is appealing, durable and showcases the natural beauty of the wood, complimented by sterling silver.
December - Emma Lumley Emma Lumley is a contemporary jewellery designer, working from her countryside studio in Exmoor. Primarily trained as a silversmith, she was always more inclined towards the delicacy and intricacy of jewellery making. Emma’s work is often described as gentle and feminine with an emphasis on delicate, organic and natural forms. She loves the beauty of simple, organic forms.

Jon and Judy Homer
D
uring September the Box Gallery will be filled with a collection of handmade leather bags, made by Jon and Judy Homer of Lincolnshire. Jon, by trade is a saddle fitter and bridle maker. His passion for making custom bags grew out of having remnants of leather left over in the workshop. Over the last couple of years he has been lucky enough to expand this part of the business to enable Judy to work alongside him full time in this area offering demonstrations in traditional saddle stitching techniques and taking the work to specialist markets and events. Jon and Judy hand cut, dye and finish natural hides, with many designs hand sewn in saddle stitch or by using their 1960’s Adler sewing machine.
Great pride and care is taken in selecting quality leathers and honing the designs to enhance and celebrate the wonderful and very workable qualities of beautiful leather. The bags are created by using repurposed vintage printing plates to permanently emboss the designs into wet unfinished hides. After drying they are then hand painted using acrylic leather dyes before the hide is finished with several layers of their own mixed tannery dye. They are then repainted to highlight areas and sealed with a generous coat of homemade beeswax and carnauba wax. A final few hours for drying and then polishing leaves the leather ready to be cut to shape and stitched up, a process which can take up to three days. Box Gallery: September 5 - October 6

Anthony Housman - Recent Paintings
A
nthony Housman makes paintings that contain motifs and biomorphic shapes which take their cue from a diverse range of starting points, including recreational, re-enacted and domestic sources. His paintings are usually begun with what he calls an “activation of the canvas” – a flurry of diluted, painterly gestures, from which he looks to assimilate apparitions of space, by introducing increasingly systematized forms and Findings - Alice Fox Dynamic Monochrome Design Anthony Housman InPrint A Selection Studio Artists Show Christmas Craft
solid swathes of colour. His approach to painting aims at developing a constant dialogue between the intentional and the incidental. Many of his paintings contain additional collage elements including canvas off-cuts and palette residue, added to further expose the materiality of the painting process. Back for his biennial visit is Jeremy Hardy with a new show and hopefully he will find something worth talking about that has happened since he was last here in 2015! Jeremy is perhaps best remembered as a much younger man, but there is nothing he can do about that now. Still alive and able to speak unaided for lengthy periods, this show will be not so much be a one-man show as an under-staffed cavalcade.

e have three main shows this autumn and the return of the monthly Barnstormers Comedy Club gives us plenty to chuckle about. Barnstormers is a chance to experience three comedians with different material and delivery styles. Several previous acts from the club have returned on national tours and it is great to see how they develop so we are looking forward to seeing what talent the new season brings.

e seem to have over done it a bit with Theatre and Spoken Word this season so we are really hoping you will have the stamina to take it all in. To help we have a discount offer on a fourth show free on some shows. The quality of theatre available for small venues this year is stunning and too good to say no to. Full show details are available on www.roperyhall. co.uk Two brilliant pieces of acting are hugely recommended by us this season. Firstly the touching story of the rise of an awkward stable boy to one of Britain’s greatest stars, Formby is brilliantly portrayed by the multitalented Ewan Wardrop. The other show is a haunting performance by Apphia Campbell inspired by the life of Nina Simone. Black Is The Colour Of My Voice follows a successful jazz singer and civil rights activist seeking redemption after the untimely death of her father.
We take a walk on the dark side with Magic Circle - James Hyland returns with this sinister two-handed mystery play, the first full-length dramatic work for the theatre by renowned novelist Kim Newman, author of the critically acclaimed Anno Dracula novels. Tonight, both men will seek answers to mysteries vast and colossal... On a similar note North Country Theatre bring us Nightmares in Norfolk with Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come To You by M R James and The Signalman by Charles Dickens. Two terrifying tales, from the masters of the ripping yarn, one told tongue in cheek and one….straight down the line! We introduce more chills with The Book of Darkness & Light as we join The Storyteller and The Musician for an evening of spine-tingling tales and haunting live music. Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards
Music
There are some new performers to choose from this season and of course our regulars. On the jazz side Snake Davis has special guests John Ellis and Sumudu joining him on his Sax Sundays and the full band will be with him in September. Rising stars on the circuit Mammal Hands are a trio of like-minded musicians who have carved out a growing following both here and abroad for their hypnotic fusion of jazz, folk and electronica. From across the pond there is some interesting Americana starting with the intriguing 3hattrio, with cultural traditions influencing new work responding to the landscape of Utah. The following month a celebration of American string playing with Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards looks like it will be a lively uplifting night. The Slocan Ramblers are one of the hottest bands on the Canadian circuit and since breaking into America, have been making a big impact there too. Come and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. The monthly folk offerings don’t get much better – we have Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker in September
The way this duo inhabit songs that are sometimes centuries old, making them personal and present again, while also pricking the heart with their own tales of everyday love and loss makes their music a rare and precious thing. In October we have winners of 2014’s BBC Radio Two Folk Award for Best Duo, Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin. And in December a helping of the feasty boys as Paul Hutchinson (accordion) and Paul Sartin bring a seasonal offering of Belshazzar’s Feast mtm promotions has two standing gigs this season with Stevie Nimmo followed by Chantel McGregor – both guaranteed to raise the roof! Blues guitar players both at the top of their game. We stay with guitars as a wellknown name and innovative guitarist Gordon Giltrap brings a show full of classics guaranteed to enthral guitar aficionados, acoustic enthusiasts and music lovers in general. In fact October is full of household names as pop icon, TV presenter, and stage/screen actress (Calamity Jane, Cabaret, Peter Pan,

Her background is in teaching arts and other skills to people of differing ages and abilities but retrained in Horticulture and Garden Design. As a volunteer Tree Warden, she was offered a grant to explore willow varieties and growing and she had a few sessions with a basket maker which opened her eyes to the many possibilities of working with willow.
