Exhibitions Workshops Events January - April 2018 The Ropewalk • Barton upon Humber January - April 2018
The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!
The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.
The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.
Ropery Hall is a small community venue with a capacity of between 100 - 150 that offers a programme of film, theatre, music and comedy.

welcome
Thank You! As I write this in November we are still full steam ahead ready to complete for the purchase of The Ropewalk on December 15, with grants in place from North Lincolnshire Council and Arts Council England. Please keep your fingers crossed, if all goes to plan I will have a good night’s sleep that night for the first time in a while!! We have all been very touched by the level of support from customers over the VAT loans after my appeal in September’s Ropewalk Magazine. All I can say is Thank You. You are all brilliant and we definitely couldn’t make this transition work without you. The Coffee Shop late night opening on Fridays has proved very popular and has a lovely atmosphere with many regulars popping in for a meal every week. If you haven’t tried it yet I can heartily recommend it. Chefs Caroline and Chris are always happy to accept requests for your favourite dishes if you let them know in plenty of time. So have a think and set them a challenge! Service carries on from lunch with no gap until 7.15pm last orders so there is always chance to grab a bite before a Friday night show. Right, back to the arts and we have another great year ahead of us with exhibitions, workshops, films, performances, events and of course cake, don’t forget the cake! I hope that you find something to intrigue, entertain or challenge you in the 2018 programme. I hope to see you soon. Best wishes, Liz

Featured Jewellers
January - Jess Withington Jess is a jewellery designer, working mostly in silver and enamel. Living on the banks of the River Humber Jess draws her inspiration from her rural surroundings, transcribing her love of the outdoors into beautifully delicate pieces of jewellery. Focusing predominantly upon pieces inspired by the river, Jess captures its essence by depicting the flora and fauna of the area in minute detail.
February - Pamela Worthington Pamela Worthington is a mixed media jeweller crafting necklaces, bracelets, earrings and brooches. Combining different hammered sheet metals with other mixed media, she creates her quirky designs. Worthington lives off-grid with a nomadic lifestyle and the work that she creates is in direct response to this. The jewellery she creates is one of a kind.
March - Alys Power Alys Power is a contemporary jeweller working from her Nottingham studio. Her jewellery is made using reclaimed, reused, reinvented and recycled materials with these objects mixed with sterling silver and semi-precious stones, to create unique jewellery and accessories. The theme of the works is as eclectic and varied as the materials that Alys uses.
April - Amanda Ray Amanda creates stunning Art Deco style, raku fired jewellery from her St Ives studio. Her jewellery is inspired by the designs of the ‘60s and the Art Deco period, combining silver and ceramic. Using the Japanese firing technique, raku, glazed pieces are fired, quickly taken from the kiln and put into wood chippings and paper where they immediately self-ignite, creating lustrous surfaces and leaving unglazed areas carbonised by the smoke.

Sacred and Profane Sally Beaumont trained at Hornsea College of Art under Michael Rothenstein, and Bartholomew Dos Santos at the Slade School. Her expertise and repertoire as a printmaker has expanded over time generating deep layers of imagery in her work. Sally’s etchings and lithographs can be described both as decorative and chaotic. Her subject matter is eclectic, ranging from medieval Christian symbolism, acid-etched metal armour, to fashion and horsemanship in Renaissance Europe. These influences combine to create a series of collaged prints that are both personal and distinct. Sally Beaumont Sacred and Profane

Under East Wind
Harriet Tarlo and Judith Tucker | Linda Ingham and David Power Artspace 10 March - 22 April Under East Wind brings together visual art, poetry, film and music in this interdisciplinary exhibition which shows work by artists deeply engaged with the Lincolnshire landscape and how personal, industrial and recreational memories linger in place. In Outfalls Harriet Tarlo and Judith Tucker present poems and drawings from their collaboration on the Louth Navigation in North East Lincolnshire. Through juxtaposing open-form poems and monochrome drawings they explore the relationship between the River Lud and the canal itself as its industrial past becomes absorbed into semi-wilderness, creating niches for local flora and fauna in its culverts, bridges and locks. In Far & Near and Kinds of White, Linda Ingham and David Power bring their collaborative work mixing painting and print with installation and music, which explores the nature of the secular memorial and how we use recreational space, in particular the coastal paths of North East Lincolnshire.

Graham Fellows
here are four great shows this season in addition to the monthly Barnstormers Comedy Club. There is the possibility of a few more in the wings so if you are a fan of all things funny please keep an eye on our newsletter and website over the coming months.
Alfie Moore
Graham Fellows the man behind John Shuttleworth steps forward with his show Completely out of Character in February. Graham will naturally talk about Shuttleworth as well as his other comic characters, plus his pivotal acting role on Coronation Street, and becoming a teenage pop star as Jilted John. Hear the tale of the night jazz legend George Melly broke into Graham’s bedsit, and of the time he bought a packet of bread sauce with a famous Hollywood actor, poignantly recalled in the ballad, Mark Rylance Was My Lodger.
Dave Johns
Returning with his new show in March, Alfie Moore will be giving away trade secrets in How to Get Away with Murder. Alfie is an original and distinctive comedian with his niche area as a former police sergeant. He came slightly later to comedy and brings a wealth of insights and comedy moments from his 18 years on the beat, where a keen sense of humour has been the key to his success and survival! Jane Eyre: An Autobiography
A
firm Ropery Hall favourite Rebecca Vaughan from Dyad Productions returns this season. Previous performances on our stage such as Austen’s Women, I, Elizabeth, Female Gothic and Christmas Gothic have really shown off Rebecca’s talents as an impressive performer. Rebecca’s ability to inhabit a character takes the audience and their imagination to a different place and time with ease. Struggling to think, live and love beyond the stifling expectations of duty, class and convention, governess Jane Eyre and Master Edward Rochester take a dark journey towards sensual and intellectual liberation. Told through Jane’s eyes, English literature’s most celebrated autobiographical novel shocked the Victorians, and Charlotte Bronte’s gothic subversion of fairy-tale romance is now distilled for the stage – under its full title – by writer/director Elton Townend Jones. Performer Rebecca Vaughan embodies everywoman Jane – and several other characters – in this intimate study of love’s realities.

creative writing/theatre
Get set. Ready? …. Write! Thanks to Fathom Writers we have four opportunities at the start of the year for you to share and enhance your writing skills. There’s a chance to enter a short story as Tale Spinners 2 holds a showcase at Ropery Hall. Other Lives Productions in conjunction with the East Riding Theatre invite local writers to spin a tale, fact or fiction. For more details on how to submit a piece contact Neil at otherlivesproductions@yahoo.co.uk. Sue Wilsea is also offering two Saturday classes. Sparkly Saturday will give your writing “Colour and Sparkle”. This Day School looks at what makes a piece of writing jump off the page and will, through a series of exercises and triggers, explore the devices that can help make this happen. The second class Blue Sky Saturday asks how creative are you? In all probability, much more so than you thought! Explore creative writing in terms of everyday resources, looking at barriers to creative thinking and how to overcome writer’s block. Both Saturdays are suitable for beginners and all levels of experience. Super Sonnet Saturday in March allows you to explore some brilliant modern and traditional sonnets before setting out to write your very own with the support of James Nash and Trevor Millum. There will be small prizes for 14 lines, bigger prizes for 14 and a rhymescheme, and if you manage the full Shakespeare, much adulation. Expect fun, creativity and great writing from everyone! Music
W
Mick Harding from Mad Dog Folk has put a lively programme together with the now traditional January folk showcase featuring for 2018 Jack Harris, Kelly Oliver and Paul Mosley. In February Mawkin described as the “modern day Fairport”, bring a host of rebel rousing folk songs and instrumentals as the band modernise traditional folk material with their own touch. There is no show in the normal slot at the end of March but I am sure you will forgive us as we have secured a performance from The Young ‘uns of their new project The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff early in April. Also in April from the heart of Northumberland, Alistair Anderson & Northlands conjures the spirit of the landscape with music that is rooted in both the hills and the tradition. Alistair’s own tunes rub shoulders with those of the Northumbrian shepherds who inspired him, alongside old tunes passed through many generations. Mixed in with the folk programme is a bit of Americana as Lindsey Lou and the Flatbellys return to the UK. They created a real buzz at their show last year and liked the Ropery Hall audience so much they wanted to return – you must have been on your best behaviour that night!! Roger Davis has shared the stage with Fairport Convention and is making a name for himself on the folk circuit. With his band he brings a night of original music from deepest darkest Yorkshire! Finally for folk in April we have Connla, crowned Best New

Group in the Live Ireland 2016 Awards. The band ended 2017 on a high when Song Lines magazine placed their River Waiting CD in the Number One position when it published its Top Ten Essential Irish Albums – a list that contained many of the big names of the genre. Snake Davis will be with us monthly with an invited guest on the last Sunday of the month. Most of the 2017 shows sold out so book early to avoid disappointment as they say! Snake is joined by Jess Gillam in April for her Ropery Hall debut. Jess found the sax at seven years and now, while still a student at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music, she is fast becoming established as one of the UK’s leading saxophonists. Also in the jazz genre Gwyneth Herbert will bring her new show Letters I Haven’t Written in February. This talented singer-songwriter is a must live, and it will be a show you will certainly remember. Later in the month thanks to the Jazz North Northern Line programme we have Tiptoe, an intimate
