The Ropewalk • Barton upon Humber May - August 2018

The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!

The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.

The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.

Ropery Hall is a small community venue with a capacity of between 100 - 150 that offers a programme of film, theatre, music and comedy.

welcome

Welcome

It seems like old news now but the deed hadn’t been done last time I wrote the introduction to the January Ropewalk Magazine. For anyone who hasn’t picked up on our good news, at the end of 2017 the Waterside Artists’ Co-operative that runs The Ropewalk now owns the building, following completion in December after 17 years of leasing it from Ian and Mark Proudfoot. It really is “business as usual” as we have no grand plans to change what we do but over time there may be some noticeable tweaks. If you have time on your hands and you would like to donate a couple of hours to support us we are currently looking for volunteers for occasional work parties (no, not that kind of party, there will be no photocopiers involved!). The plan is to get a group of people together on an arranged date to tackle some of our maintenance jobs both inside and outside the building. Any DIY skills would be gratefully accepted but mainly we just need people with enthusiasm. To sign up please email Janine@the-ropewalk.co.uk for details of the next date. A new venture for us this year is the promotion of a Grand Gardening day on Sunday May 20. With speakers in Ropery Hall including Nick Hamilton from Barnsdale and a number of plant stalls, art and crafts for the garden and gardening-related information we are sure there will be something for everyone with green fingers. We have booked good weather, we just need some visitors which is where you come in! This year is the summer of our Open Art Exhibition Humber to the Wash. I hope that all the creative people out there who have been thinking about doing something can now spring into action. The application forms will be on the website soon and handing in and selection is not far away at the end of May. Here’s hoping for some warm weather this year. Best Wishes Liz

May - Marg Dier Marg Dier studied at the Royal School of Needlework where she learnt all forms of embroidery and after completing three years apprenticeship became a tutor there. She wants embroidery to be seen and worn. Inspired by nature she works from still life transcribing flowers and each piece is unique, stitched on tiny pieces of luxury silks and incorporates antique glass beads and sequins to add dimension.

June - Petrichoralia Esther Reil is a designer maker who began crafting as a creative outlet. While experimenting with different mediums to create jewellery, she discovered concrete and was drawn to its versatility as can it be used not only to create heavy industrial structures but also light and elegant jewellery. Her business, Petrichoralia is inspired by the word Petrichor - the earthy smell after a period of rain – her work is inspired by architecture, geometry and nature.

July - Denise Lawn Retrained as a silversmith and jewellery designer, Denise Lawn set up her own business Clarise Designer Jewellery in Leeds. She uses metal clay paste to create her jewellery range taking inspiration from the flowers, birds and insects in her garden. She creates replicas using the metal clay which, once fired, is solid silver often embellishing certain pieces with Cubic Zirconia, Swarovski Crystals or even gold. Every piece of her work is unique, just like the subject matter.

August - Ellymental Jewellery Elly Englefield is a Cardiff-based artist and jewellery designer who graduated with a degree in Contemporary Textile Practice in 2005. Her illustrations are transformed into meticulously handcrafted pieces of jewellery with designs based on her own fervent interest in kitsch nostalgia, Victoriana and animals. Her drawings are incorporated with found ephemera such as 1950s books, Victorian newspapers and delicate home-made papers and items are multi-layered to create a strong and robust piece of jewellery.

Maria Connolly Ceramics

G

lasgow born Maria graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1987 and works with flat sheets of earthenware clay where she uses the clay as a building tool to explore form. The shapes that Maria builds act as a blank canvas to build texture and pattern. Her work has a utilitarian engagement with the suggestion of storytelling and a reference to childhood memories. Influenced by the natural environment that surrounds her home in the form of colour and tone Maria also takes inspiration from found objects, industrial artefacts and architecture as well as personal

memory. She is interested in making objects that provide a canvas for her exploration of colour, pattern and texture. Her work was included at the Hunt Museum exhibition celebrating forty years of ceramics in LSAD ‘Culture of Clay’ in 2014. She lives in rural Donegal where she has her studio alongside her home. George Hainsworth

G

eorge Hainsworth was born in Leeds in 1937. He studied at Leeds College of Art (1955-60) followed by the Slade School of Fine Art (1960-62) where he was taught by, amongst others, Sir William Coldstream. There followed a 40-year career in teaching, initially at Leeds College of Art then Leeds Polytechnic (now Leeds Beckett). He retired from his professorship in 2002 and now lives in East Yorkshire with his wife, artist and printmaker, Lucy Hainsworth (nee Rogers). This exhibition of recent work sees George remain with the themes that have for a long time been the subject of his work, including ships and the sea and still life paintings.

George states: “Although I am strongly concerned with abstract composition and formal engagement, my work is at all times figurative in the broadest understanding of that term. Painting and sculpture have been my prime forms of expression throughout my career, with drawing as a constant autonomous and influential activity. Besides this, I was a teacher, which was integral to the development of my work and its underlying philosophy. Over the course of my career I have explored themes that have interested me at the time and this flexibility has allowed me to rediscover paths I had forgotten.“

Pete Moss and Clive Redshaw - Surfaces

P

ete Moss’s work forms the centre piece of the show. Pete, a widely respected and collected artist, has developed a vocabulary of carefully constructed ceramic forms, whose surfaces become canvasses. These are worked with the application of rich glazes and marks that develop harmony and balance in the interaction of colour, pattern and form. Surfaces bring new works that seek to extend that language. Pete Moss

Clive Redshaw’s work, that moves out onto the walls of the gallery, is based on an intuitive Clive Redshaw

response to the colour and texture of the natural world. The work in Surfaces is drawn from contrasting periods in his practice and includes both painting and tapestry. Their colour and flamboyance is very different from the considered elegance of the ceramic pieces but both share a search for a finish that resonates for the viewer.

HUMBER TO THE WASH 2018 Open Exhibition This June both Ropewalk galleries will be once again devoted to our open art competition, Humber to The Wash. The biennial show draws artists from the region including the counties of East Yorkshire (together with Hull), North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk.

There are a number of prizes on offer including the Selectors’ Prize of £400 and others to be announced. The show runs throughout the summer from June 16 to September 2.

Artists wishing to exhibit can download The two guest selectors who have the unenviable entry details from our website: task of deciding which works to include are www.the-ropewalk.co.uk George and Lucy Hainsworth, both practicing artists with a wealth of experience behind them. Barton Arts 2018

R

opery Hall is again hosting some great theatre, music and comedy as part of the 2018 Festival. It is a pleasure to take part in the Festival and it gives us a chance to try some new work and bring back old favourites. We have squeezed in the Fathom Writers showcase just before the Festival starts. A free relaxed night in the bar showcases what great creative writing talents we have locally.

Rhodri Miles as Dylan Thomas

We are thrilled to welcome back the delightful Rhodri Miles, who last year delighted the audience with his acclaimed portrayal of actor Richard Burton. This year, on Friday, June 22, he will be portraying the tortured Welsh poet Dylan Thomas in CLOWN IN THE MOON, a dramatic portrait of the poet’s chaotic, frequently hilarious, and all too brief life. Located in a BBC studio, it sets some of Dylan’s famous broadcasts and iconic works alongside vivid reminiscences of his clownish antics in pubs, bars and parties, and his encounters with a host of eccentric and volatile women.

The Time Machine

The ever-popular Monday Night at the Movies will be followed on Thursday, June 28, with another favourite theatre company Dyad Productions bringing its radical interpretation of the H.G Wells’ classic, The Time Machine when a Victorian time traveller transcends across the ages from 1900 to our own far future – from the fall of man to the end of the world – discovering the fate of our endeavours and uncovering our darkest fears. This promises to be a philosophical journey, a nightmare adventure, a cautionary tale – this is the story of us all.

A

s we wind down for the summer break we still have some great shows on offer and of course Ropery Hall’s contribution to the Barton Arts Festival. For those of you who just can’t get enough of Snake Davis, I count myself in that number. We have two more Sax on Sunday shows except one of them is on a Wednesday! At the end of May Snake is joined by Gareth Moulton, Manchester born singer-guitarist, Snake’s long-time friend and collaborator in the Classic Sax Solos project and Heather Small Band. Gareth also sings and plays for Cutting Crew and Wang Chung. His illustrious CV includes recordings and tours with Go West, Nik Kershaw, Jim Diamond, Paul Young, Chaka Khan and more. June sees the welcome return of John Ellis on stage with Snake. Pianist, singer, composer and producer, John has worked with Tom Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lily Allen, John Squire (Stone Roses) and others as well as being a founder member of The Cinematic Orchestra and the original pianist of The Snake Davis Band. In November 2007 an unassuming young man walked into Ropery Hall, took his coat off, sat on stage and picked up his guitar. What followed was one of the most mesmerising evenings of voice and guitar I have ever heard and the pleasure of experiencing. John Smith returns with his rumbling fingerstyle sometimes with a slide, sometimes playing the guitar on his lap, sometimes he detunes mid-song. His guitar work and honey-on-gravel vocals are simply spellbinding. Fancy something a bit upbeat and lively? Our last Saturday of the

month folk slot in May is the much requested Blackbeard’s Tea Party and we have a treat from Roots Music hotshots Woody Pines who have wowed the crowds on both sides of the Atlantic. Last time they toured the UK, reviewers unanimously declared them to be one of the most entertaining acts on the Americana circuit. We don’t normally programme into June but something caught my attention which I didn’t want to miss. PicaPica features the vocal interplay of Josienne Clarke and Samantha Whates, dual front women who create powerful harmonies atop layers of texture created by Adam Beattie and Sonny Johns - a tiding of magpies picking shiny moments of tone and timbre from ‘60s West Coast, sunshine pop and indie folk.
