Exhibitions Workshops Events October - December 2012 The Ropewalk • Barton upon Humber

The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!

The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.

Workshops

The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.

Events

The Craft Gallery continually displays in excess of 200 makers’ work from throughout the country including jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles and a wide selection of artist-made greeting cards. The Hall-Mark Room displays a range of contemporary prints and collectables.

Ropery Hall is a small community venue with a capacity of around 120 that offers a programme of film, theatre, music and comedy.

New Autumn Season

H

ello there, here’s hoping you have spent the summer wisely, recharging your batteries and getting a few early nights. If you haven’t you could regret it as like our 2012 golden athletes we need Ropewalk audiences to be at peak fitness for a cultural marathon this autumn. There are so many exhibitions, workshops, films and performances we have had to slot an additional four pages into this edition of Ropewalk Magazine. One of my favorite exhibitions returns - the International Mini Print Show with many original pieces under £50, a great way to start your own collection. On stage in Ropery Hall will be comedy from circuit stalwart Fred MacAulay, poetry from the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan and music of all genres including a special performance from Kiki Dee. At The Ropewalk we believe in starting audience development early so we have arranged for some of our

visiting musicians to drop in to local schools to give a mini concert prior to their evening performance at Ropery Hall. Snake Davis will start this new initiative at John Harrison Primary in Barrow upon Humber which we hope to build upon in the future. Whether you are a fan of film, music, comedy, visual art, craft, and theatre or just like our coffee I hope you will be tempted by something within this supersized programme. After you have browsed all we have to offer and made your choices why not call up a few friends and invite them to join you? We are always delighted to see new faces and you get the kudos of introducing them to this little place you know. So on your marks, get set……go! Liz PS have you tried Cooks Pudding Club yet? - That’s an event I would certainly win a medal at!

Admission Free Galleries Open: Monday - Saturday 10am - 5pm Sundays and Bank Holidays 10am - 4pm The Ropewalk is on one level with good wheelchair access; we are a 5 minute walk from the Barton Transport Interchange with half-hourly buses to Hull and Scunthorpe and a 2-hourly rail service to Grimsby and the wider rail network.

The 8th British International MiniPrint Exhibition is a touring exhibition of about 200 small prints selected by open competition from over 1000 international entries, accompanied by 10 larger invited prints from distinguished artists. Organised by the Printmakers Council, the show attracted entries from 39 different counties. A mini-print offers an ideal introduction to contemporary print collecting: their size (no larger than 8cm x 10 cm) makes them affordable and the breadth of subject matter and technique provide something for everyone. It is also challenging

for the printmakers – selector Gill Saunders, Senior Print Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, commented that “Working on a small scale demands control and focus, to produce something which invites an intimacy between artist and audience, or something which has a visual impact out of proportion to its size”. In addition to the mini-prints a number of well known national and international artists are showing larger prints, including Morgan Doyle, Wuon Gean Ho, Michael Goro and Maggi Hambling. enrietta Corbett’s innovative print workshops are always a popular draw at The Ropewalk and in October she returns with her first solo show.

Henrietta studied sculpture and print at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, where she was taught by the artist Anish Kapoor, and has been exhibiting successfully throughout the UK and beyond ever since and maintains a high profile within the contemporary art world today. She has just completed an artist in residency at Loughborough University and has two further residencies planned for next year in Ireland, and Spain. Henrietta is a regular exhibitor at the UK’s well known printmaking fair ‘Printfest’ held annually in the town of Ulverston, Cumbria, where she won the “Printmakers Award” in 2011. This solo show is the culmination of new works made whilst in residence at the University of Loughborough and some previously unshown works made whilst in South West Ireland last year. workshops

This autumn, the day workshops at The Ropewalk offer a wide range of crafts in a programme beginning in October and ending in December. Jewellery making, print making in various forms, a weekend workshop focussing on etching and two workshops with a Christmas theme are all part of an exciting programme being offered this autumn at The Ropewalk. And let’s not forget the ever-popular Glass Lightcatchers workshop with Gill Hobson which, if previous workshops are anything to go by, is sure to be over-subscribed once again. The programme begins on October 6 and continues on a weekly basis

until mid-November with a short break until the two Christmasthemed workshops on December 8. Not surprisingly, print-making features heavily this autumn as The Ropewalk prepares to welcome the 8th British International Mini Print Exhibition between 20th October to 18th November 2012. Martin Maywood, Christopher Roantree, Henrietta Corbett, Angela Lindsley and Tim Needham will all be leading print workshops but if print-making in all its different guises isn’t your thing then why not try Gill Hobson’s Glass Lightcatchers workshop or Jewellery Making with Diane Higgins-Lee, make miniature shoes with Nicky Dillerstone or Christmas Wreaths with Alison Walling? Her contemporary porcelain is now sold in an impressive host of galleries and shops both in the UK and overseas, including New York. Her work mirrors the seasons and she finds winter a particularly inspiring time of the year and her latest work tends towards a more abstract nature and draws heavily on the themes of ice and rock. Jill is also an enthusiastic champion of craft, lending her support to nationwide initiatives to raise its profile in the UK as well as teaching ceramics workshops to children and those with special needs. Jill will be running a workshop at The Ropewalk in December.

Autumn Comedy

W

e have three opportunities to raise a smile this autumn. I am delighted to welcome one of my all time favourites Mr. Fred MacAulay to Ropery Hall. His PR bills him as a stand up comedy legend and I would have to agree. This very clever, quietly spoken Scot can make an audience cry with laughter without breaking into a sweat. Before Fred takes to the stage at the end of November we have two other comedians well worth a ticket. Ava Vidal is a young comedian who has made a name for herself quickly – her original take on everyday life has gained her many fans. Kevin Precious will not be appropriate in November with a performance about the reality comedy show which is the daily life of a teacher. A must for those who teach in secondary education but there’s also plenty in there for those of us who work outside schools. Liz

Songs From The Shipyards

R

opery Hall is proud to host a special event on October 18 as we welcome The Unthanks with a brand new project. Songs from the Shipyards is a beautiful and powerful audiovisual work that traces the history of the shipyards of the north-east through a 60 minute film by award winning film maker Richard Fenwick which is accompanied by a new live score by Mercury nominated folk band The Unthanks. This unique, extraordinary and moving event tells the story of the rise and fall of the shipbuilding industry and its impact on the lives of so many people in the 20th century. Commissioned by and first performed at Tyneside Cinema in 2011, Songs from the Shipyards is

currently touring towns and cities with links to shipyards and shipbuilding. Inspired by amazing footage of the North East between 1900 and present day held in the BFI National Archive and Northern Region Film & Television Archive and using the songbook of shipyard songs written over the past 100 years as a starting point, this promises to be an unforgettable event. Do not miss it. ‘They are like the morning dew that hasn’t steamed off yet, they are fresh and new and I really don’t think they know how good they are’ - Robert Wyatt Songs from the Shipyards Live will be screened on Thursday, October 18 at 7pm and again at 9pm. Tickets are £12 in advance and £14 on the door.
