Exhibitions Workshops Events January - March 2013 The Ropewalk • Barton upon Humber

The Ropewalk was built in 1801 and as Hall’s Barton Ropery manufactured ropes for the world. It closed as a working factory in 1989 and was brought back to life as an arts centre in April 2000 by an artists’ co-operative who still manage the site today. The Grade II listed building is a cultural quarter of a mile long!

The Ropewalk has 3 temporary exhibition spaces with a rolling exhibition programme that ensures there is always something new to see.

Workshops

The Ropewalk offers a stimulating programme of art and craft workshops that run throughout the year, including regular classes in printmaking and life drawing and day classes in a range of activities.

welcome

In with the new

T

he first Ropewalk Magazine of 2013 has everything you have come to expect: great exhibitions, opportunities to flex your creative muscle and a veritable smögȁsbord of music, comedy, film and theatre. The publication provides the information which I hope you will act upon, joining us to celebrate the arts. In this issue I would like to do more than just pass on information but to ask for you to get involved in your local arts centre. There are three issues that I am currently grappling with and feel that if it is true that two heads are better than one then the readers of the 5,000 Ropewalk magazines distributed surely could help to come up with some additional ideas. Firstly we live in an ever changing world where information is key and there are so many ways in which it can be accessed. At The Ropewalk we try many different methods of getting people’s attention, could we do more, if so what?

Secondly as a building we try to be as green as possible, by buying local produce, recycling, using low energy alternatives but could we do more? Finally as part of our agreement with Arts Council England we have a target of increasing income from corporate giving. Times are tough but someone reading this may know of a firm or work for one that may want to get involved with The Ropewalk. I will be producing a series of blogs in January to open debates on these subjects and others relating to the arts locally along with a discussion evening. I hope you feel able to join me and to contribute to future development at The Ropewalk Liz Bennet Managing Director Cover image: Old Dance School appearing at Ropery Hall March 22..

New Year – New Ceramics Welcome in 2013 with some wonderful new craft at The Ropewalk.

J

ennie Gilbert originally trained in Swansea and then undertook a short apprenticeship in the village of La Borne in France, where she started making Reduction Fired Stoneware. In 1993, she set up her own workshop in Surrey, developing her “Domestic Range” of Tin Glazed blue and white chequered work and her distinctive “Mishima Range”. Jennie moved to Project Workshops in Hampshire in 2001, exhibits extensively and has work in public and private collections throughout Britain and abroad.

K

en Eardley, based in Brighton creates distinctive ceramics which are all individually handmade. With a background in textiles, Ken now creates a fun and graphic range of functional ceramics. His handmade earthenware is made using press moulds which are then fired three times. Ken’s artwork is very striking and popular.

Own Art Scheme The Ropewalk is one of 300 selected galleries and art organisations throughout the country to offer the Own Art scheme. Own Art is available to UK residents to buy any kind of contemporary art or craft from paintings and drawings to sculpture and ceramics. It allows you to borrow as little as £100 or up to £2,000 and you can pay back in 10 monthly instalments by direct debit completely interest free. It can be used as a part payment towards work costing more than £2,000 “Easy to use, all we need from the customer is two forms of identification and a few minutes of their time and they could be the proud owner of a new piece of original art from The Ropewalk,” says Craft Gallery Co-ordinator Laura McNair. “I use the Own Art scheme. The application is quick and spreads the cost over 10 payments making it easy to budget for. Owning original art is good for everyone involved and makes a real difference to me and my home. I would recommend it to everyone.” Colleen Shaw, customer of the Craft Gallery.

Textures of Spurn

T

extile artist Alice Fox has just completed a residency at the remote East Riding peninsula of Spurn Point. Using its unique landscape as a starting point, Alice has created a series of works with the natural elements at their core. Alice’s practice brings together observation, recording and interaction with the landscape, celebrating the beauty of natural systems through her work. She uses textiles processes and printmaking techniques, combining the two together through the use of stitch as texture and printed marks. Using rust prints from found objects on the beach and making collagraph prints with collected items, Alice makes marks on cloth and paper that are directly of the place. This project is supported by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and by the National Lottery, through Arts Council England. Gallery One Jan 19– Feb 24

THE PASSAGE OF TIME The slow passage of time is the theme of a new set of installations by Hull artist Martin Waters. Focussing on precise moments viewed over long periods Martin documents, using photographic images, collections and found object assemblages, ‘how our experiences change and move within our lifetime’. nown best for her intricate pieces in glass and metal, Gill combines techniques and materials, constructing many separate elements to create cohesive wholes. The colours, textures and arrangements which characterise her work have led to pieces being exhibited nationally and internationally, and widely commissioned for a range of public and private spaces. Glass has fascinated Gill since early childhood and it’s no surprise that as an artist she continually explores the challenges of this medium. Constantly seeking new arrangements and forms which capture its particular qualities, she creates pieces that are both evocative and inspiring Gill Hobson: Box Gallery March 2 - 31

The Kings of Cloth of Gold This witty new historical play written as part of Leeds’ Royal Armouries’ Inspired by… project tells the story of the Field of Cloth of Gold and explores the timeless issues of manhood, competition, celebrity and chivalry in a fastpaced, multi-character production for all the family. The year is 1520 and Henry VIII of England meets Frances I of France at the most magnificent tournament ever held, the Field of Cloth of Gold, so named because so many pavilions were made of costly gold cloth that it became the byword for extravagance.

Not just for old Folk!

N

ew for 2013 Mad Dog Folk has joined with Ropery Hall to present a regular folk night. The aim is to bring you the best in contemporary folk on the last Saturday of every month. (We didn’t quite make it in March!) Below are the details of the first three events which are followed in April with Faustus supported by Odi and in May Sam Carter who finishes the first season. So all you need to do is block out your diary and enjoy.

Young Folk Showcase An evening dedicated to tomorrow’s stars of the circuit. Already well on their way to becoming a main act heading up the bill for the night are BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award nominees Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts. They combine astounding lap-tapping guitar, fiery fiddle and their trademark harmonies with considerable song-writing talent to make a truly distinctive sound. Also performing will be Jessica Lawson. Over the past two years Jessica has performed a number of high profile and exciting shows, supporting Eddi Reader and Barbara Dickson as well as appearing as a special guest at a Christmas Concert alongside the author Michael Morpurgo and Coope, Boyes and Simpson at Beverley Minster. 2011 also saw the release of her debut EP Molly of the Tyne. 2012 was another great year for Jessica, as she appeared at many gigs and festivals across the country and also received a prestigious invitation to the BBC Introducing Masterclass at Abbey Road Studios.

Ollie King is a young traditional singer, melodeon player and guitarist from Cambridge, whose music is steeped in the traditions and customs of England. He has already developed into a mature, well-rounded musician with a unique style and approach to traditional music. Drawing influence from such icons as Nic Jones and Peter Bellamy, his repertoire consists of both traditional and in the tradition songs, as well as tunes from all over the world. He was also a finalist in the 2011 New Roots Competition. 8pm Saturday 26 January: Young Folk Showcase Tickets: £3 adv £5 otd

New Year music at Ropery Hall

T

here are some old favourites to start off the year and some great performers new to Ropery Hall. I am excited to present a New Orleans marching band, HOT 8 to Barton. Playing only a handful of gigs in the UK I am delighted that we were able to secure a date. Expect high energy brass with the soul of the American south. Their renditions of Ghost Town and Sexual Healing will make you move and smile. Try a bit of New Orleans sunshine and spirit to get ready for spring. The first gig of the year is the annual performance from Paul Jones and Dave Kelly followed by Eddie and the Hot Rods. Formed in 1976 Eddie and the Hot Rods soon made a name for themselves on the pub and club circuit, their hit ‘Do anything you want to do’ was a popular anthem which sticks in the heads of my generation. The Budapest Café Orchestra play traditional folk and gypsy music from across the Balkans and Russia to kick off February. In a wide-ranging programme of music evoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires - with a few surprises along the way - it’s good enough to make you want to book a holiday along the Danube! Boo Hewerdine and Brooks Williams play as State of the Union followed by the much awaited return to Barton of Jeffrey Focault. Jeffrey has never played at Ropery Hall but appeared several times at The Carnival. His beautifully crafted songs

transport you to another place and time, true Americana. (Buy tickets for Sat & Sun for £20) Our Jazz element for this programme sees the first performance of awardwinning vocalist Sarah Ellen Hughes. Sarah has established herself as a notable presence on the London jazz scene and beyond. Sarah began her career with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), with whom she was lead vocalist from 2005-2008. Since then she has earned many accolades including winning the 2010 International Jazz Singing Competition, “Jazz Voices,” held in Lithuania. Mark from mtm brings back the familiar faces of Patsy & Bex and Nick Harper and at the end of March he has booked Brooklyn native Rebecca Pronsky, one of New York City’s finest singers and songwriters who plays twangy folk that shifts between and blends elements of country, blues, rock, folk and vintage jazz.
